Hunter by Zom Lee
Wow, what can I say about this book?
I loved it! I purchased this book after reading a review on Instagram, highlighting a readers view that mentioned Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
The story line crept into my mind and had me hooked. I enjoyed the characters and their journey, plus references to local places. I am from Portsmouth, so when I read about it in the book I felt happy.
The book has many twists and turns, that had me gripped. A real page turner and a great, entertaining story line. The story has loss, mystery, romance and a touch of gore. I thought I would like this book yet I actually loved it and I can’t wait for the next book. Some of the intense relationships and cloak and dagger feeling really did remind me of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The pace was good and really enjoyed this book.

Did I give myself a review? I absolutely did. This is my debut novel and I adore my characters. If you are looking for a good old zombie apocalypse, you won't get that here. My characters spend their time attempting to keep zombie outbreaks to a minimum.
Give it a go!

The shuffle, step, stumble of an unsteady gate disturbs the quiet peace of a carefully manicured English garden. Flowers bend and break under the reckless weight of a body driven by instinct, savage and unfeeling. The perfume of delicate roses does little to mask the stench of rotting flesh. This is the hidden world, the filth upon which romance dares to blossom.

Destiny draws the main characters together, binding them to each other and their fate. The bulk of the plot for this first book in the Hunters series is a will-they/won’t they turned when-will-they/what-happens-now attraction. This focus on the relationship is a slow burn fuse that ignites the dormant connection needed for these characters to truly bond, and continue to kick a** in the books to come.

Lee’s strength lies in her attention to detail. Whether it’s compelling a desire for sweets with her descriptions of cakes, cookies, and confections, or eliciting a cringe by accounting the gory elements of a DROM kill, Lee has it in hand.

Hunter (by Name, by Nature), is a solid set up with a thrilling cliff hanger conclusion in what is sure to be an exciting monster hunter series.

Note to non-British readers: There are quite a few colloquialisms, idioms, and bits of slang that may not be familiar. These shouldn’t slow down your reading as they are used in clear context. However, it may not hurt to have a search engine on standby.

Ever see the movie Pride and Prejudice and Zombies? That's the first thought that jumped into my mind as I read the first few chapters of Hunter by Zom Lee. Effortlessly blending romance, mystery, action, and zombies in a contemporary setting kept me reading page after page.

The first stages of dating between Ellie and Julian were refreshingly realistic with insecurities, second guesses, and cute texts. And what woman wouldn't be a little frustrated with a guy who vaguely hints about their past lives? Oh, hello, women like answers, Julian, don't leave us hanging. But that's one of the things I loved most about the book was the all-too-real dialogue between the characters. It's not all witty and cute banter ... life is hard (especially in their world).

While I'm usually not a big fan of cliffhangers, I thought the story ended perfectly but left me wanting a little bit more.

This book was a nice surprise. Who doesn’t like a good romance with complicated characters that make us root for them to find a way to get together? Now throw some zombies as the background and I am sold.

I loved the conversations and chemistry between Ellie and Julian. They were fun to hang around with in the pages. The author has obviously a good grasp at describing realistic and relatable interiority in the face of a tumultuous relationship.

The book also has a good amount of zombie-hunting action to keep you turning the pages, and memorable support characters that round out an interesting plot.

Go check it out.

DNF 13%. The language is robotic, the grammar & punctuation are shocking, and the characters don't act like real people.
