Rate this book
Edited by Robert Gonzales Jr.

A growing number of Baptist churches today are rediscovering their confessional heritage. The contributors to this book welcome this rediscovery. Indeed, they hope it continues! With that end in view, they have written and compiled these essays to celebrate and commend the use of creeds and confessions in Baptist faith and life. The primary audiences they have in view are local church leaders and members because sound theology is not just the province of the academy but is essential to the health and ministry of the local church.

“When believers read the Bible alongside creeds and confessions, they read the Bible in community with the church of all ages.”

Several of the essays in the beginning include a lot of the very same information. I don’t know that I’d recommend reading this book and yet I think the content of it is worth knowing. It was helpful to me to try to get my mind around what our Christian forefathers were up to in developing the various confessions of faith that we have- especially the Westminster and 2nd London Confession.

The Confessing Baptist, Edited by Robert Gonzales, Jr., is successful in what it set out to accomplish. This book serves as a great resource regarding baptist creeds and confessions. The book is a compilation of articles by a variety of baptist pastors and theologians, which gives each article a different voice, and keeps the chapters fresh and interesting. The most beneficial aspect of the book, in my view, is the historical information included throughout the different articles. Understanding baptist creeds and confessions requires understanding the history behind the confessions. This book serves as a great resource for this history. In addition, the book provides helpful explanation of the most distinctive articles of the Second London Baptist Confession of Faith (1689). Again the book can be used as a reference for years to come. Finally, Robert Gonzales' articles regarding why to subscribe to a confession of faith and to what level one should subscribe is helpful and worth the price of the book. I highly recommend The Confessing Baptist to pastors, seminary students, and christians who want to understand the history and purpose of baptist creeds and confessions.

Essays on the importance and use of confessions of Faith. Simple and instructive, Biblical and logical, great insight and historical sound. I would encourage those who are creedal Baptist to read this book to sharpen their understanding of how and why we use a confession. Great summation of Baptist covenant theology! A fair and praiseworthy exposition of the 1689 LBCF. A challenging reminder of the historical roots of the Baptist faith and message that is quite contrary to many modern Baptist denominations.

Excellent book! Helped me to understand the need for confessions and creeds. And the history of the 1689 and its uses.

This collection of essays offers insights into the legitimacy and value of confessions of faith, the history of confessions of faith in the Baptist tradition, the use of confessions for today, and a close look into some important topics addressed by the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith. What sets this book apart from others is its focus on Baptist confessions as opposed to confessions in general. Additionally, it highlights the points of the 1689 that distinguish it from the Westminster Confession of Faith. I highly recommend this book for any church member or leader who is looking to implement a confession of faith into his church.
