Claws and Fangs #4

Hint of Her Blood

Rate this book
When Aleks looks at me, he sees his past. I see a future that I just can’t have…

For most of my life, being Luna-touched was a blessing. Then I met Jack “Wicked Wolf” Walker and it wasn’t long before it became a curse.

I thought I’d be trapped in my gilded cage forever—until his long-lost daughter returned to the Wolf District, handing him his first defeat in more than twenty-five years. She spared his life, but our laws are clear: an Alpha who loses a challenge is no Alpha. Our pack was forced to disband, and I finally was free.

Which… isn’t as great as it sounds. I have no family. No real friends. No money. And a vampire who looks at me like he's desperate for a bite.

Aleksander Filan thinks I’m someone that I’m not. And while it would be too easy to let this handsome, sexy, magnetic vampire take care of me, I reject him if only because I’m terrified of what the Luna whispers to me at night.

I mean, he can’t be my fated mate, right?

I’m a wolf. He’s a bloodsucker. I’m damaged goods, and he’s… well, he has his own baggage, doesn’t he?

He promises that he wants me. That he sees me. And when the Wicked Wolf follows me to Muncie, Aleks will have the chance to prove he means it.

After all, for a hint of my blood, he vows he’ll do anything.

**

Hint of Her Blood is the next arc in the Claws and Fangs series. Aleks might have been convinced that Gem was his long lost love reborn, but that all changes when he meets Elizabeth and he realizes that it wasn't an alpha female he was searching for, but one that's Luna-touched. But after years of gilded captivity, Elizabeth isn't ready to take any mate--especially when she's sure she's just another wolf's replacement...

This book was good but a bit of a slog, I don’t normally mind a drawn out romance but here the female MC avoiding the love interest just made no sense really from the way it was written. The ending was probably most interesting part which makes me think next book holds more promise

There's many things to like about this book. For the most part I do like all the characters, the author did add in some decent female side characters (in the first book of the series, every female side character was stupid or evil), the world building seems interesting, and I'm very happy that at least one shifter-romance novel doesn't overuse non-con, which I come across far too often in shifter-romance stories. The FMC (in this book and the previous one, with Gemma's character) is very entuned with her sexuality, knows what she wants (at least sexually) and is not afraid to go for it, which I appreciate.

With that said, this still felt like a I'm Not Like Other Girls type of book. She dropped it after a while but if I had to read the FMC refer to herself as (italicized) other one more time I was going to mentally punt the novel into the stratosphere. And I don't mind a more subservient MC, but there's a way to make someone subservient without making them a doormat. And if she isn't physically strong like the first FMC, for the love of everything, at least make her intelligent! I let it go with Gemma because it seemed in character for her, she was pretty isolated growing up so when obvious things went over her head, it was fine. But Elizabeth has lived on her own for years, she survived off of grifting tourists, because of everything she's been through she should be wary and always on alert. The miscommunication trope isn't as bad as in Gemma's arc, but it's still pretty unbearable and they continue to dance around any and all important subjects, then when it is finally discussed I am wholly disappointed by it.

Spoilers ahead!

I don't understand the logistics of Elizabeth's abilities. She can sever bonds with a single touch, but that touch doesn't have to be skin to skin contact, so technically she can sever them by brushing someones shoulder? Knocking into someone on a crowded bus? She states that she can see the bonds, but she severed the one of her first pack Alpha without seeing it or realizing what she was doing? But she knew instantly, except with her ex-Kyle, then she had no idea she had severed the bond? She can sever any bond if they have fractures in their relationship, or doubts, except when it's her own even though it's been an entire book of doubts.

Having the same main bad guy in this book as in Gemma's made me want to stop reading immediately. I don't understand why Gemma didn't kill him except for the sole reason of providing a big baddie for this book, which just feels lazy. Also what felt lazy is his entire death scene? And the fact that Elizabeth played no part in it, she just kept getting in the way but insisting she needed to come along even though she herself admitted that she's not a fighter. I thought the whole "Wicked Wolf" was a title other people gave him, but he refers to himself as that? Sorry buddy but you sound like me when I was 11 and made my first account called DarkOne101. Also, the fact that everytime someone referred to him they said his full title? Cringe.

Romans death was absolutely pointless and felt very added on for... for what, I'm not sure, I'm still trying to figure it out. The guy is 900 years old but thinks him saying "Hey if I let you kill me, you'll stop trying to start a war, right?" and then believed them when they said yes! Here's an idea, stop playing matchmaker and figure out who in your group/team/cult is letting in all these shifters! It's stated that Roman grew his tooth back in 2 days, so round up your people and start looking at their mouths because there was a total of at least 3 shifters in this book that had fangs. Romans death solved nothing, it left the vampires without a leader, the town even more defenseless than it had been, and the rebels are just going to still try to take charge.

Last thing in this very long review. Can we talk about Julie? No please, can we talk about her because we really just danced around the subject and then let it go. Elizabeth was like, "Am I a replacement for her?" and Aleks was all, "No of course not, don't bring up the fact that I literally just called you her name two days ago and keep a little painted portrait in a locker on my person, and also, please don't talk about the fact that I have a history of love at first sight, and wow, lets not talk about the fact that I (for some reason???) didn't allow you to work at Charlies and was angry when you wanted to continue to work for Roman, and please for the love of everything don't bring up the fact that I also had an adorable little Polish nickname for Gemma, and we can assume probably Julie too. If we could not talk about how I ignored you for months for no actual good reason and the fact that I most likely stalked you while you struggled to survive after your pack disbanded I would appreciate it. Oh and if we could not discuss that I CONTINUALLY BRING UP MY DEAD EX GIRLFRIEND THAT WOULD BE GREAT" and Elizabeth was like, "That sounds perfectly reasonable, let's go with that."

I love that Polish vamp so hard!

A great installment to the universe of fang city, Muncie. A city run by vampires. We were introduced to this universe of characters in the initial book in this series, Never His Mate. The first three books were dedicated to Gemma and Ryker’s story. Aleksandr played a pretty big role in that trilogy, but here he gets his very own story. And I’m all in. I loved him in those books and I love him here.

Our heroine, Elizabeth, isn’t as strong a character as Gemma, but she has her own inner strength. I admit to being a bit irritated with her for fighting their bond for the bulk of the book. But I definitely prefer that to an insipid, bitchy FMC. One criticism I have is when an epic confrontation is presented and one of the main characters is either injured or for whatever reason blacks out and comes to after everything is over. C’mon, that’s an easy way out. And that device is employed here not once, but twice! Hence my 2 star rating rather than 4.

I would still recommend this book, and the series as a whole. This book doesn’t end on a cliffhanger per se, the story does continue in the next book, Taste of his Skin. And while you don’t have to read the first three books in the series before reading this book, I don’t think it’s a strong stand alone. While you won’t be completely lost if you don’t read the first three books, you’ll definitely understand more if you do.

I finally got to finish this book! So many things got in the way; getting sick, alot, my moods, and other things that had to be completed first. You all know how adulting can be. Now, to the good stuff!! I promise no spoilers of course as always.

This book was FANTASTIC! I loved getting more insight on The Elizabeth. She is absolutely precious and strong in her own way. We have to keep in mind, the poor dear went through alot. She’s learning how to move forward and I think Aleks is helping with that in a way.

This book showed some self healing for both Elizabeth and Aleks. Acceptance on a few things for Elizabeth herself, but also her acknowledgment of another struggle she has. Julia.

I got a much needed vengeance accomplished 😈 SUPER happy about that. Read it to find out, I’m not telling you. 😉 I did up crying…it made me cry. You also have to read it for this answer too. So much changing.

I can’t wait to start Taste of His Skin, see how Elizabeth and Aleks continue to grow together or if something happens. I’m so nervous. But in a good way!

Unfortunately, the further I go in this series, the less I enjoy it. Last time, Luna-blessed Elizabeth had been Wild Wolf Walker’s ace in the hole to controlling Gemma but that plan failed spectacularly; Luna was free but packless. Now, she’s refused to be part of Gemma’s pack but went as far as Muncie while denying it’s because of Aleks. Elizabeth’s known Aleks was her mate seconds after their eyes met in Wild Wolf’s territory. And he is just as aware.

When Elizabeth doesn’t get the bartender job she expected, she’s more than surprised, willing and thrilled to accept Roman’s offer to work exclusively for him sensing/breaking bonds and acting as a receptionist, he even gives her a fang to wear for protection. A move neither Gemma nor Aleks is happy about.

Aleks is pretty easy to like. He doesn’t force himself on those he’s attracted to but lets them follow their own heart. Gem just wanted to stay friends with no romance. Elizabeth is an entirely different matter. She’s blessed/cursed by Luna. Both Luna and her inner wolf insist that Aleks is her fated mate or as he refers to her, his beloved. Her human brain resists the attraction.

Wolfman Jack is still out there trying to repossess her. He’s aligned with some rebel vamps to get into Fang City aka Muncie. Is no place safe?

I can’t recall Roman’s reasoning to do what he did. Guess I’ll have to go back and re-read that part as it’s vital to what will happen next.

I enjoyed Aleks and Elizabeth's story more than Gem and Rykers. They felt more developed and their actions felts more consistent with their characterizations, though I think this author has a pattern of struggling with continuity because the story contradicts itself in places again.

The events of the previous 3 books for Gem and Ryker were summed up well enough you could start with the series here if you don't care to experience the events first hand. It's recapped well and basically reads like the backstory you'd get when you start a new book anyway.

what a great read

I really enjoyed this book…
I had read the first book in the series a while ago, then this one - which can totally be read on its own, but I suspect would have been better if I had read the two books in between the first and this on….
They’re on my ‘to read’ list…the rest of the series….
A really great read with great characters and storyline….
I could barely put it down….

hated the ending

The ending was absolutely bad.
Overall story was interesting, but the ending was terrible and really poor.

What happened to it one of the secondary characters near the end was so bad that I don’t want to read the rest of the series.

All that character did was cause more strife for the people he claims to want to protect

In case you didn’t know ending was bad.

LOVE the book…Annoyed by the character lol

Loved the book but so annoyed by Elizabeth. To just stand there and do nothing has me so stressed and upset. But that goes to show how AMAZING Sarah writes her character. To feeling sorry to loving to wishing she do something other than be weak lol can’t wait for the next book!!

Hint of Her Blood, the fourth book of the Claws and Fangs series, is an ebook I downloaded from Kindle Unlimited.Since the first few books of this series, I've loved Aleks and was sad he was sidelined. I was so happy to see this story available so I could explore his character more. Another great spin-off

Hint of Her Blood

What a great romantic story! Started slow and I kept waiting for the story to have something happen. But then finally it did and finally all became a welcoming love story! Can’t wait for the next book to see how it all goes down!

When Elizabeth first meets Aleks, she can't believe when the Luna tells her they are true mates. One a shifter and one a vampire ! Will they be able to stay together or will they set off another shifter/vampire war ?

This book was a bit slow for me in the begging. I knew I wanted to ready the se one book in their story so I kept going. I wish there would have been a bit more development in both the storyline and characters. The ending felt very thrown together and rushed, but I did really enjoy the story.

Elizabeth

Elizabeth's journey is not easy and poor Rowan don't want to give spoilers so all I say is really he gives his word but the evil people don't keep to theirs it seemed pointless to me I think he was just fed up with it all he is 900 years old.

I didn't like the MMC and he seemed still pretty attached to his former love Julia. FMC didn't seem bothered that he called her Julia by accident, keeps a locket with her photo and avoids having a real discussion about his relationship with Julia. Not really mate material in my book. Another DNF.

Like Romeo and Juliet, shifter and vampire style. Except they don't die in the end...

Different pacing than the previous three, but I loved it!
