I began reading Be Held by Him and The Companion Guidebook when I was ill and held up at home for several weeks. It was perfect timing for me to dig in deep and to connect with Karen Brough as she candidly revealed aspects of her chronic and debilitating illness. It’s a blend of a devotional, memoir, and workbook.

There were times I had to put the book aside when it became too much, though. I was touched by her circumstances and the reminders of God’s presence and faithfulness. Held By Him—what a beautiful reminder. I know He holds me, but it’s refreshening and inspiring to be reminded of it, especially during trying times.

Through her struggles, the author encourages and inspires others. Personal stories, applications, Scripture, and prayers reveal principles to encourage and restore our faith during the hardest of times.

The first thing I was struck by while reading this book, is the author's God given gentleness. It flows through every page. I don't know her but I feel her. It's like she is sitting becide me telling me her story, paying over me. I have never read a book with quite this touch before.

Each chapter starts with a personal story by the author, her writing style is gentle and personable. Then it brakes to a message from God, like a poem crafted by him for us. Each chapter is finished with a payer. Often helping the reader release burdens to Christ, and thanking him.

I didn't know how badly I needed the release reading this book has given to me. I know it was a God thing that I was connected with it. He has given me permission to rest and heal. I don't have to feel bad about not being able to run around in a hurry like the rest of the Mom's I know. It's okay to sit and be quiet.

I recomend to everyone who is tired, searching, overwhelmed, in pain, or anxious.

From the beginning of the book I was drawn in. From the thoughtful intro pages you already are given such a delightful and relatable view of the author. She immediately feels like a friend, even before hitting chapter 1. You can immediately tell the Holy Spirit was speaking through her through the little details that are sprinkled through the book. One being the sweet picture of the visual map and the way the concept is displayed. This book was remarkable, and I am thankful she listened to God and let Him speak through her. As someone who has had a very rough couple years, and experienced some unexpected trauma, this book was extremely comforting. I have not had a sickness like her, but so many of the things she said I related to immensely. I think trauma overall brings such a depth to struggles that many do not see. And she put light to some of the aspects that those who haven’t gone through trauma don’t understand. This book was like a warm encouraging hug. And doing the workbook with it helped point out things in my own life. I am thankful for this book.

For anyone going through a tough diagnosis or illness, this book is for you! The author gives us an intimate look at what she experienced with process of her diagnosis and her journaling with God as He spoke with her. This is the first in a series of three: I will definitely go back and read the other two. There is something profound in her writings that everyone needs to hear; such as taking time to slow down.

Thank you to BooksGoSocial for the copy of the book as well as to the author, Karen Brough. Mrs Brough we all have something to learn from your story!

Not exactly what I was expecting. Not sure how to describe what was missing, I guess more of the personal application versus her experiences, which had a lack of giving information on what she was really facing.

I did like the Father's Heart sections at the end of each chapter.

Insightful read

Not the main target reader of this book, but I was curious since I received a "mixed" education, from my parents and the outside word. I recommend it for everyone curious like me, or those believers in difficulties

Powerful story

I saw the face of Karen a the end of the book, but honestly, I wanted to see her since I started to read the book where the doctor is talking about her condition. I found this story amazing, inspirational, calming, and more.
One thing that is going to stay with me is the fact that we are sharing moments, and connecting with a few. We live in an ample range of moments and situations, but still, we don't stop enjoying the moment.
On the other side, I would like to highlight from Karen's story, that we need to pay attention to the signs our body is giving us.
I feel that she found out purpose in her grieving, and her message is for everyone, she is very respectful about her feelings, spirituality, and our view as readers and spiritual beings. Honestly, there is a lot of beauty inside this book, the message, the writer's utterances, and an inspirational story.

What a beautifully written book that encourages us and shows that the Maker of the universe cares for us in all things and when we need Him the most.

Each chapter has a scripture and then it goes into the author sharing a personal story about her life after a serious illness developed. Her writing style is connectable and personable to the reader in a gentle style. Then the next part of the chapter gives encouragement from the scriptures and the personal story. Each chapter has several scripture passages and quotes. Other things like Questions to Ponder, recommended playlists, and more. The chapter ends with a prayer.

The Companion workbook mirrors the book but goes into a workbook style to answer the questions. A great tool for journaling with the book.

The book is encouraging and someone who is struggling with pain or being overwhelmed. I don’t usually read this style of book. This was a good encourager. I wouldn’t call it a study book.

This book is the author’s story about her life and her journey through an illness that developed suddenly. I really liked the “Father’s Heart” and the prayer at the end of each chapter. I think this book would be an inspiration read for all readers.
There is also a workbook that is mostly a repeat of the book( at least what part I did read) but there is more and there are questions to answer. I think the workbook would be a great start to start a journey with journaling.
I received a compliment copy of both the novel and workbook from the author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are my own.

Have you ever found yourself basically knocked flat by some circumstance in your life? Karen Brough experienced a life event that did just that. She conveys her story in Be Held by Him and its Companion Guidebook. I found myself connecting with her story and her writing style. While you could readjust the book and get a lot from it, the guidebook allows you to go deeper and gain more from the author. It also allows you to personalize this journey to your life and your own experiences.

I found this author shared her heart, beliefs, and journey throughout the pages. Even the title, Be Held by Him, demonstrates our need to let go when life knocks us off our feet and learn to rely on God. We need to let go of the wheel, let God hold us in His hands, and trust Him to take care of this.

Regardless of how life has knocked you down, this book illustrates how trusting in God can lift us up and love us. Whether you read this book on your own or read it in a group, I feel Karen Brough has created a book and companion guide that go beautifully hand in hand.

So check out Be Held by Him and Be Held by Him Companion Guidebook for yourself.I definitely recommend them.

In this very personal and vulnerable book, the author shares her heart and her life experience with a debilitating illness. Even if we don’t suffer to that extent or deal with illness, we can identify with her feelings of despair and desperation and her longing to be healthy and whole. I love the way she turned to God and how she heard from him personally. She shares her story in an accessible manner, which draws readers in and carries them along with her on her journey as if you are a friend coming alongside. The memoir-style text could also serve as a devotional since she includes spiritual lessons and prayers. The text is easy to read and understand. The sixteen chapters explore her process and how God walked with her through this difficult trial. The accompanying workbook will help readers better personalize the teaching in their own lives. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.

Karen Brough’s Be Held By Him: Finding God When Life Knocks You Off Your Feet is a wonderful book to read. I found her honesty, strength, and faith to be inspiring. I was encouraged by reading this book. It is broken down into sixteen chapters that are full of Biblical scripture, prayer, and a story from the author of an event associated to each chapter that showed her God’s presence.
Be Held By Him: Finding God When Life Knocks You Off Your Feet, also, has a companion guidebook. It includes, Biblical passages, inspiring quotes, Questions to Ponder, a recommended playlist, and Activations. It was a perfect addition to the book and one that continues to encourage me when reading the two books together.
I am giving both Be Held By Him: Finding God When Life Knocks You Off Your Feet and the Companion Guidebook will be getting five stars from me. I highly recommend them for readers who are seeking or continue to seek God’s presence. I would love to find more books them again from Karen Brough in the future.
I received paperback copies of both Be Held By Him: Finding God When Life Knocks You Off Your Feet and Be Held By Him Companion Guidebook - Finding God When Life Knocks You Off Your Feet from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

I enjoyed the book and companion guidebook. It walks us through a journey with the author as she seeks to find answers. We all struggle in different areas and this book gives us tools of how to grow closer to God. The author went through a period of illness where she felt at times that there was no answers for her. I liked how friends came along side her and encouraged her with God’s Word.

As I read her story I saw how vulnerable she was at times. I know that we all at one point try to hide our weaknesses but God is there to give us strength. She does continue to talk about her illness quite a bit that at times for me was a little too much. I understand her struggles but sometimes she confused me with her back and forth of healing and then not believing everything was all right.

The book is worth reading to get clarity in parts of our life that we struggle with. I did not always agree with everything she said but did find nuggets of wisdom in the book. I appreciate her openness and heart to share with others.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Beautiful

Karen Brough is a gifted writer.  Starkly honest and able to get to the heart of a situation or emotion, some of the chapters in this book brought tears to my eyes as her words resonated. Those who struggle with chronic illness, difficult situations which are hard to understand, or grief – including grief for the person you used to be, or the abilities you used to have-  will find a “friend” in this author, someone who understands.  Most importantly, I love how Karen always brings Jesus, and His love for us, to the forefront of the conversation.

I will add that near the end of the book this statement is made- "Understand that most churches differ in terms of worship styles and some beliefs. It’s good to find one which fits how God has designed you to connect with Him." I understand the loving intent of this suggestion, keeping in mind that it’s wise to seek a church or fellowship of believers who seek and follow the word of God, not deviating from the message of repentance as well as love and grace.

Thank you, Karen, for sharing your experiences and your hope in Jesus with a world that needs to hear it.

As someone in a similar situation as the author (minus the spouse and kids), I completely related to this book! Her story of the grief she experienced upon suddenly becoming chronically ill and not receiving a miracle healing was told so beautifully. She didn't try to glamorize her struggle or fake her faith, but opened up in such a raw, impactful way. I absolutely loved how the book was broken up between her story and Father God speaking directly to her with words of gentle encouragement and unconditional love. I feel so inspired in my own chronic illness journey, and this book has helped renew my faith that, even when we aren't healed, there can still be miracles and a fulfilling life!

I should mention that I listened to the audiobook, because that's an important detail. The narrators were exquisite!! I highly recommend this book! Thank you, Karen Brough!

There are no coincidences with God. Everything we go through, good and bad, is divinely appointed. I believe the same is true for the timing of me reading Karen Brough’s Be Held by Him. I signed up to review this book months ago because I’m always looking for inspirational reads. I thought this was a Bible study, and had I truly looked at the description, I probably wouldn’t have chosen to review it.

But I didn’t, so here I am reviewing it today.

Around the time I started reading Be Held by Him, I had just wrenched my back. I am usually very active and sitting still for long is a challenge for me. But here I was laid up and reading about Ms. Brough’s debilitating illness, and the lessons the Lord taught her in her (very long) season of pain. Maybe if I hadn’t been on my own spiritual journey to begin with, I wouldn’t have been so impacted. However, it’s for readers in just such a place in their lives that she wrote it.

Be Held by Him is broken up into short chapters that walk the reader through Ms. Brough’s journey. Each chapter starts with scripture that coordinates with what she was hearing from God as she sought Him at the deepest level. The end of the chapter has another piece of scripture and a section titled Father’s Heart, followed by a Prayer section.

The Father’s Heart is filled with profound reminders of who our Father is, and how much He truly loves us. Beautifully written, the words drew me in and tended to my own heart in every area throughout the book. A reminder of how the Lord desires to draw us into His rest, or the struggle we have to be still in His presence (this is a hard one for me) or reminding us that we are never alone in our circumstances, but that He is right there with us. If we’re a follower of Jesus Christ and we spend any time in the Word, we know this. But these are eloquent reminders that touched a very deep part of me.

Ms. Brough’s Prayer section after each chapter was just as beautifully written. Reminders of all we have to be thankful for regardless of our circumstances.

I didn’t do a thorough reading of the Companion Guidebook, but from what I read, it follows the same format. And it adds something else that I love—an action plan and a worship playlist for each chapter. So many people are more easily able to praise the Lord when enthralled in a beautiful worship song.

I wasn’t without struggles with this book, however. I cannot imagine how difficult it was for Ms. Brough to suffer as she did through long, frustrating, painful years. But the sections of each chapter that walked the reader through all of this was hard to read. It wasn’t just the emotional component that was difficult, but the overly repetitive nature of her ailments. It seemed as if two people wrote this book—one with clarity and precision for the Father’s Heart and Prayer, and another for the rest of it that was not nearly as well written. Still, if you or someone you know is going through a difficult season, you will be encouraged by Be Held by Him and the Companion Guidebook.

Be Held By Him
Finding God When Life Knocks You Off Your Feet
By Karen Brough

All I can say is, “Wow”! I was facing a painful and difficult time in my life when I read this book. Although Ms. Brough’s experience and suffering is very intense, even heart breaking, her book is filled with hope and peace.
I found encouragement in her faith, her focus on God and sharing the very private moments where He spoke to her. Page after page I was inspired and encouraged. Her testimony of letting go and turning to God with each new challenge she faced is very special.
I was reminded anew of how He IS there for us even in the worst of times. If we will only draw close to Him and allow Him to comfort and guide us in ways we can never imagine and how much He loves me! I saw I often focus on the trials rather than Him and I am missing out on so much He has to carry me through. Not to mention learn what He is trying to teach me and spiritual growth.
This book was written out of pure love and praise for her Lord but also for her readers. She was so open and transparent in her deepest thoughts, feelings and even in her failures, doubts and spiritual conflicts. I cannot even imagine the courage it took to write her story.
Every chapter has a scripture focus that goes with an area where God was working in her life. At the end of the chapter is two parts, one entitled “Father’s Heart”. I especially liked “Father’s Heart” as she shares thoughts and words the Lord spoke to her. I found so many of these spoke to me in a deeply special way. The last part is a personal prayer. All of them very inspiring and uplifting.
I will read it and keep it as a reference. I have to keep myself from highlighting most of the chapters! Whether you are facing a major crisis or small difficulty, you will want to read this book and keep it in your library. There is also a Companion to help you study and personalize your unique journey.
I received a copy of this book from the author through Eblast in exchange for an honest review. The opinions stated are my own.

Christian Inspirational Books are a wonderful genre to read as they are encouraging. Be Held By Him: Finding God When Life Knocks You Off Your Feet by Karen Brough is the latest book from this genre that I have read.

Chronic Illness usually is a hard diagnosis to handle. I know many who have Chronic Illness and their days are filled with discouragement, aches, and pains. Karen Brough was diagnosed with a Chronic Illness over 10yrs ago and she has written this book as her story of her challenges and her victories since her diagnosis. Karen didn't let the discouragement keep her down, she relied on God to help her through the challenges. Chronic Illness doesn't have to be a life-changing and debilitating situation when God is on your side.

I was very encouraged by this book. The book is very encouraging with the personal stories of Struggles during Illness being overcome. I LOVE the layout of the Book which has 16 chapters about how Karen trusted God through this and each chapter is filled with Scripture and a Prayer. The Companion Workbook also has a wonderful layout with Questions to Ponder, many Scripture quotes, Biblical Encouragement and so much more. Karen's story will resonate with many, especially those with Chronic Illness. I HIGHLY recommend the book and Companion Workbook! WONDERFUL Book!
