World-renowned cardiologist Race Stiner did the unthinkable – he quit.
What else is a man supposed to do when God clearly shows him his life's calling is no longer healing physical hearts, but spiritual?
It would have been easy to tell God no, and to ignore the call back to a tiny town in the Ozarks to begin a ministry in a small church that was about to close its doors. But at fifty-three, Race walked away from his prestigious and successful career and agreed to follow the Lord – under one condition. He told God He wanted a wife to labor alongside of him.
Penny Liston had spent more than two and a half decades delivering other ladies' babies. Despite the fervent desire of her heart, two failed marriages, and years of infertility treatments, she'd never had any of her own.
Slowing down and moving to the small town in the Ozarks might have been the best decision of her life. Answering the ad in the paper for a female companion to help start a church, the only requirement being that she was good with children, might have been the craziest.

Will things work out? Only you will find out in the end. At the end of the story they adopted 6 siblings from another family where the parents were in an accident.
I read the start of the next series and the oldest daughter became a surgeon and on her wedding day she is confronted with the groom and another young lady in a compermising situation. Now this is why the low stars, I don’t like situations like this. I have read many of this authors stories and haven’t ever encountered this.
Start a new series with this story. Penny moves to Mistletoe so she can live and do the job she loves. Working in a big city hospital didn’t have a casual atmosphere or foster life outside a career. Someone from her past also moves there, but Penny is unaware. Until she finds out. Even in this short book Jessie reminds me God has a plan for each of us. He’s not afraid to use time and space apart to weave us back together.
The start of another series and it's off to a great start. With Race quitting his medical profession to become a spiritual leader is a big step for him. When he realizes that his ex wife lives in the same small town. Could their second chance of Faith bring them back together.

Race Steiner gave up a very successful career as a heart surgeon for a second chance to serve the Lord as a minister in a very small town. Looking for a someone to be at his side as a partner in life. Penny has been in Mistletoe, AR for about 3 years. A midwife at the small hospital, she still longs for children of her own, but after 2 failed marriages, she doesn't see a family in her future. Answering an ad looking for help by the new preacher in town, they are both dumbfounded when they meet. They had been married to each other 20 years ago. What does God have planned for their future?? Is there a chance they will become parents for the first time or did they miss their chance?? Overall a very good short story. This is the first book in this series. I had just finished reading the other books in series before I realized I also had this book. I recommend reading this book before the other stories.
What a lovely second-chance romance! It a novella and the people in it are slightly older, late 40’s, which is a nice change. They had been married before, but slowly rediscover the good in one another and, through a series of events, obviously the hand of God, they start to consider remarriage and adopting 6 children who lost their parents.
Sweet story and causes some introspection about what’s important in life and in marriage. I do wish it had been longer, I was just starting to connect with the main characters.
Best quote: “Children take your brain cells and eat them for dessert.”
I love this series and the prequel just adds depth to the rest of the stories!
*poor, **ok, ***good, ****very good, *****something special
I enjoyed this short read and I am looking forward to reading this series at some time.
For Penny Liston, seeing a new life come into the world never gets old. She delivers babies for a living and has fostered many of them along the way. But things are about to change for her which has to do with her first husband Race Steiner.
For Race, he is about to hang up the scalpel but giving his heart in an all-new way. He knelt at the front of the little church, his arms on the pew, his forehead in his hands. He'd spent a lot of time in that position since he arrived in Mistletoe a week before.
"But if it be your will, I would really appreciate you sending me a woman to be my helper and soulmate."
Find out what happens in this 0.5, 95 pages with a lot of 'dreaming' along the way. Enjoy and happy reading!
Dreaming of His Kiss was so delightful! I loved this second-chance romance between Penny and Race, and I think it's the perfect introduction to Jessie Gussman's new series. As always, the author's writing hooked me right from the start, and thus, I read it pretty much in one sitting. I also enjoyed that the characters are in their late forties or fifties, and how, despite everything that's happened in their lives (mistakes they've made before, among other things), they're now deciding to do what they must to follow and obey God's will in their lives. Now I can't wait to start this series! Completely recommended!!~ 5 stars
This was such a beautiful story of second chances. I actually didn't see this book until I read about three of the others so I decided to read it last and continue with the kids stories and I was not diappointed at all. It doesn't matter when you read any of these books even tho I like to read in order these books are all stand alone books that are so amazing. When I found out that there were more of Jessie's books set in Mistletoe Arkansas I knew I had to have them. The way Jessie writes is like you are living the story yourself. I have come to love everyone of these characters. What an amazing job by Jessie Gussman.
Race is a former heart surgeon in Chicago. When he feels the Lord wants him to change from healing physical hearts to healing spiritual hearts, Race moves to Mistletoe Arkansas and takes a job at the new Pastor in a church with only 10 current members. Penny is a midwife working in Mistletoe Arkansas after the failure of her second marriage. When she sees an ad for a children's helper at her local church, she feels the Lord wants her to apply but she is reluctant. She has always wanted children of her own but now that she is in her mid forties, she feels that her time for that has passed. This is a sweet, heart warming, second chance love story.
This is a nice introduction to a series and the first time I am reading something by this author. I found the characters charming and the setting of a small Ozark town nestled in Arkansas a delightful backdrop to the story. The writing was fresh and kept this reader engaged. This was a nice story about two exes meeting in an unexpected situation and place; finding that there still seems to be "something there". Was one willing to take a chance with their heart again and give them another chance? Will six orphaned children give them the impetus to try?
When he was called to help heal spiritual hearts instead of physical hearts, he never realized how drastically his life would change and what God had waiting for him in the process. An amazing beginning to a wonderful series by an outstanding author who touches on difficult subjects bringing hope, love, forgiveness and healing to so many lives. I hope you start this journey with this story and then the rest of the series, you won't be disappointed.
Dreaming of His Kiss is a sweet, heartwarming, inspirational, second chance romance. Ms. Gussman once again gives us a brilliantly written story of a journey back to love. Both Penny and Race won my heart. I thoroughly enjoyed their journey. It is always interesting to have the main characters be middle aged rather than in their 20s and 30s. The ending is perfect! It was wonderful to get Race and Penny's back story.
This is a prequel to the series I just finished and I was a bit concerned it wouldn't hold my attention. Afterall, I knew how it ended. BUT I was wrong! I actually think having read the series first made this a sweeter read. I loved learning how Race and Penny and how God's hand was at work not only in their relationship, but in creating their all at once family too. Quick read.. novella.. and very worth it.
I liked this storyline. Now older and more mature and settled in themselves, Race and Penny meet again and decide to give their love a second chance. Wish there had been a bit more about Christmas in this story. Could've had an epilogue or 2 regarding the kids and adapting to each other thru the holidays.
This is an okay read. I don’t think the story matches the title but I did like the plot. The characters were interesting but I wasn’t too big on the religious part of the story. That’s my issues though. I think the story progressed really quickly but since the characters had history it wasn’t a bad thing.
Race and Penny never stopped loving each other, but divorced when Race was not there for Penny. Now they are back in the same town. Will 6 kids needing a home bring them back together? Prequel to the Cowboy Mountain Christmas series. Nice, sweet, second chance romance.
This was a fantastic Contemporary Christian fiction book that I had the opportunity to listen to on YouTube. Jay Dyes is a fantastic narrator, and he literally makes the characters "come alive". The story by Jessie Gussman was believable, and I have enjoyed each and every book by her. Highly recommended!
I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Cowboy mountain series the prequel .5. This book is a second chance romance, my favorite kind of inspirational read, and the start of a series I am looking forward to. Wonderful setting in the Ozarks.
He becomes a pastor after leaving a successful surgery practice. He meets his ex wife and they realize they still love one another and God has a job for them. 6 orphaned children need a home and parents.
I first read this when it came out midway through the Cowboy Mountain Christmas Series. It was great to get background on this amazing man and woman who are the wonderful parents in the series to some amazing kids and stories. I really love all the lessons we learn in Gussman's books.
Race and Penny get a second chance at love. The characters are great. The pacing of the story fits well. I like Dreaming of His Kiss. The story pulled me in and I wanted to find out the rest of the story.
This is about an older couple, both of whom have made mistakes in their previous relationships. Have they learned anything from their past? Now there is a new ingredient in their lives, faith in Jesus, but there is still a lot to work through and unexpected twists make for interesting reading.
I liked this story about a couple deciding to marry because although they had been married and divorced some time before, they felt God leading them very clearly to recommit themselves in marriage .
How love comes back when you give it a second chance
Wow Jessie, you sure did a great job on this remarkable story of your new series. The storyline flowed smoothly together and the characters were incredible. Love the book.
