Brogan lives in Ireland with her husband and their eleven furry children: five furry minions of darkness (aka the cats), four hellhounds (the dogs), and two traditional unicorns (fat, hairy Irish cobs).

In 2019 she embraced her craziness by writing about the imaginary people that live in her head. Her first love is her husband followed by her number-one favourite furry child Bob the cob, then reading. When not reading or writing, she can be found knee-deep in horse poo and fur while blissfully ignoring all adult responsibilities.

Cursed Vampire by Brogan Thomas
It was a book. Tru (Don't call her Trudy) was annoying and radiated quirky, not like other girls vibes. This book was 40 chapters and it is a standalone in a series. Can I truly review this book without quotes? Nope, so lets get into it!
Before I start, I remember 0 plot points because it was very... bland.

"With an angry huff, I cross my arms underneath my boobs and attempt to look calm and unconcerned. I am not." What? This is the unnecessary line that radiates 'Look at me, I know female anatomy.'

"Sometimes I think the battling sides of me make me psychotic. A psychotic vegetarian unicorn vampire. Ha." ...what?

"Instead, I cringe and on wobbly legs stumble back to the desk. I drop inelegantly back into the chair." Yes.. I too do that. Inelegantly just seems so out of place and unnecessary to the extent where it makes the writing much more.. forced.
description

"As soon as I see him my tummy flips as if there's a creature inside me playing bongo drums with my organs."
description
My brain really imagined this and I smiled. This is the most funkiest line in the book and I just laughed and accepted it because the rest of the book is mindless nonsense.

"I'm not blind to the opposite sex, and I'm not an innocent fluffy virgin either." Okay this is tame. But my enquiry is: how is virginity fluffy? I have never heard anything to do with sexual content be used as 'fluffy'

"I mean even lesbians can attempt to look attractive once in a while" ...What. Can we please talk about this line and how wrong it is.

The book was giving me: 'I found wordhippo, let me use it!' for the entire story and the only factor I 'liked' was that the male interest refused to date the MC because she was a minor. But that's common sense?? Like.. cmon. I feel like this author has potential but at the same time.. idk.

I'm so glad that the spinoff series is about Tru because she's my favorite so far. She's the heroine that gets the best found family. I actually love that I read Rebel Unicorn first so I was super invested and knew the future for her.

This book doesn't really have romance in it... though there is some hint to the future (and I know the truth cause I already read the first spinoff).

Tru is awesome and kickass and we get to see her grow into her own... or at least start going there.

This series is FULL of betrayal and violence. But, I think what makes this so fun is that we get to see this corrupt society fall and start to be remade through these women who have all been through so much trauma. I love how the storylines for these women intersect and overlap. This is NOT a linear series. In some ways, the first book and then the second took us farther into the future and this book is kind of "in the present" but also still in the past.

I cannot tell you how much I love this one... but I loved it.

The heroine is 17 and was pretty severely abused by a relative in the past. She's got a foster family and then gathers a new family around her throughout the book. It's lovely.

The plot of this had really good potential. Like the story line was super good. I just hated the female Mc and her relationship with her guardian angel.

I heard she had a spin off series from this stand alone and I went to read it and read the summary and changed my mind lol

4.5.

I rarely rate this high for a story with a teen MC but this is the best book in the series so far. This female lead ROCKS and I can totally understand why the author has chosen her for the spinoff series. This book makes me excited for that series.

Tru is a female lead you want to cheer for. I'm excited to see how she develops and matures in the spinoff.

A coming of age urban fantasy not to be missed

I just can’t get enough of this new author! This book was a unique blend of new and old themes. I actually want more of these characters and a possible series in this world! I want more maybe when the character is a bit older. The fact she was 17 was interesting because the author didn’t force more adult relationships and I felt the character really was 17 but absolutely worth reading as an adult reader. The complexities of the characters and the dynamics really made me feel mad on behalf of the main character quite a few times and I was definitely emotionally invested from the first chapter.,, Brogan seems to skirt the line very effectively between too much abuse from men and a strong female lead showing sass and fighting back. Loved this book and will read anything the author writes in the future. Amazing!

With each book, the series keeps getting better and better. Cursed Vampire is brilliantly written, totally engaging, entertaining, and a fantastic addition to the series. The characters are very well-developed, appealing, unique, with distinct personalities and complex emotions. I generally don't get too much into books with younger/teenage characters, but the series is an exception. I absolutely adore Tru, she is well-rounded, sassy, and a fighter, behaving and reacting maturely for her age. She is confronted with one challenge after another, faced with abuse and heartache but manages to fight and claw her way above it all. She is definitely one to admire.

Poppy Royana did an outstanding job with the narration. She captures the characters' personalities, prototyped emotions, and intensity found in the pages. The series is absolutely amazing, and one I'm strongly recommending.

Tru Dennison is a seventeen year old vampire shifter working around humans and desperately trying to keep a very low profile. Life has not been kind to Tru and she is struggling to survive without a loving family to support and protect her. This exciting story takes Tru into the company of a magnificent male that just happens to be an angel and her new boss. Their escapades together stir up the local shifter and paranormal community bringing unwanted attention to Tru and her homeless situation. This action-packed adventure only accelerates from this point until the very end of the tale. Surprises around every corner will keep you on your toes and riveted to the pages. Take this journey with Tru and Xander, the gorgeous and off limits angel. Good Read!!!!!

Essentially an origin story or prequel...

... for a new spinoff series, & while it has an end-of-the-episode, happy-for-now ending, it's also holding onto some of the plot lines for the launching of the new series. Which I'm looking forward to reading, but agree with reviewers arguing that it shouldn't be called a standalone story.

It's a pretty good book, and I also look forward to reading her series, but I can't help thinking how much more believable Tru'd be if she had a classy, clever, FAE-influenced way of talking (given her grandfather's raising of her) instead of sounding like a street juvie.

I also wish the author would more clearly explain the difference between this world's non-angelic angels & not-necessarily-evil demons because from the little given, the two don't seem to be significantly different, outside of the glimpse of the life choices they make & the consequences from those. I don't get why she didn't just use different creatures that better fit her story's mythical build.

As stated in my previous reviews for books 1 & 2, if you can handle some brutality & language (the brutality is less in this one, though unfortunately, the f-bombs spiked back up to 7 dozen!), there's a decently engaging story in here

*CONTENT: as a movie, this would be rated R.
-Possible triggers include some brutality & threatened rape,
-Shifting back to human form is normally naked, secular attitudes toward intimacy with some explicit talk but no peeping tom porn scenes,
-Language is worse than normal for most of us, & as noted, the f-bombs have gone back up to 7 dozen here &
-Use of the Lord's Name trivially/disrespectfully (ie in vain) though none as curses, fwiw

Not my favourite of the series but still worth the listen.
Audio was ok a few places where there is sound issues but still good with a nice narration.

Fmc is only 17 so that maybe the main reason I wasn’t overly a fan of this one.

Mmc was ok he’s an angel. I wasn’t overly invested in the story but I loved that we was bits an pieces of main favourite dragon shifter and the fae Irish lord from previous books.

Fmc of both book one and two are just better than this one is all.

Still a 3 star listen, I enjoyed it.
Gifted audio in exchange for an honest review

OK Story

This was an interesting beginning to a story but it felt unfinished. I did love Tru, Story and Dexter. I also enjoyed the various supernatural types. I didn't like the odd pacing of things or how easily things seem to work out. Overall, this was fun and entertaining, I just wish I had closure.

Great book!

This writers improvement is incredible. Loved all 3 books. They all had amazing stories but the first especially was rough around the edges but this newest book is captivating and refreshing. I can't pinpoint it but it's a massive improvement. I'm really happy I found his author can't wait for the next book. Thank you brogan Thomas

Pretty good boook

I got this book thinking it was the first book of its series, but good thing this book could be read as a stand alone. I love the story line and plot. I am always up for a good romance novel.

can’t wait to see what happens in the future

Cute read about a young girl who finds herself and her tribe. Mind you, there is magic, bloodshed, and shit no 17 year old needs to deal with, but it’s fantasy 🤷🏼‍♀️.

Hybrids - Why are they an abomination?

Tru is an abomination. She is half vampire/half unicorn.
She doesn't know her family members.
All she has is nightmares, when she was young.

A great new magical world to explore

If you like fantasy and magic and heroes and heroines with attitude then these stories are for you. I walked with Tru from the beginning to the end, it was almost as if I was there. I love this world that Brogan has created and can't wait for the next book.

This may age me, but when I saw a girl that was part unicorn I thought of Anne McCaffrey’s Acorna. It immediately intrigued me. The story is well written with many layers as I said before. I’m definitely going to read the next book.

This is the 3rd book in an urban fantasy/paranormal romance series that I read back-to-back. It's billed as a stand-alone, but the three books are intertwined (and there is at least a 4th book on the way.) Each book focuses on a different heroine, and each finds love by the end, but that's not the majority of the book. The world is one where shifters, vampires, witches, angels, demons and other fantasy creatures have seemingly always existed and dominated/interbred with humans, but otherwise, it's just like our world, with some sociological twists. It's also set in Great Britain. The key feature of this culture is male dominance and control of females, and that culture is rotten to the core. Women feel victimized and powerless most of the time. The series is mostly about changing that controlling, abusive culture to a healthy one. I really like the emotional intelligence of this author. She portrays interactions between men and women through an insightful lenses.

This book is about a newly homeless and orphaned half vampire/half shifter 17-year-old who is resourceful and kind to those less fortunate, but by a few months into her predicament, is very ill. Queue powerful older men rescuing her and taking over her life, depriving her of agency. And one of those men, an angel (her mega-crush) takes over guardianship of her. Throughout her recovery, she learns more and more about her very hazy past and regains her personal empowerment, while also being inspired to help others.

Cursed Vampire and Cursed Witch were both quick, fun reads in Brogan Thomas’ Creatures of the Otherworld series. As with the previous books, I LOVE the world building and her unique take on some standard paranormal tropes.

Thomas has more than your standard vampires, witches, and werewolves in this world, and it makes everything so much more fascinating. Once again, I found my mind grappling with little ideas sparked by elements in the story, and I love being inspired like that. I wound up keeping a page with notes about those mental ramblings for later perusal, because I wanted to get back to the fascinating story!

The main characters in these stories are all very strong women that have overcome much trauma in their lives. They have lots of depth, and have admirable qualities and even some faults.

One thing has bugged me about all four of the books I’ve read in this series - what is up with the weird hair color? Why can’t they be special with normal hair?

Quick enjoyable read

Quite action packed for a standalone and while I appreciate not being sucked into another series, I would like to know more about the characters. Dexter was the best character lol
