The greatest days of Heather Matthews’ life have taken place in Delta County. Unfortunately, so have the worst.
Ten years after an unspeakable tragedy took the lives of the two people she loved the most, Heather returns to her hometown for a class reunion with her high school sweetheart, who is now her husband. Just when she recalls all the reasons to love the idyllic lakeside town in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, her life is once again turned upside down.
Heather must push her grief aside and investigate the events that occurred the night of the reunion. The process will also have her questioning everything she thought she knew about the tragedy ten years prior.
In a town this small, betrayal always hits a little too close to home.
Thank you for stopping by to rate my books or see my reviews. I don't spend much time on Goodreads, as it's not great for the mental health of an author to obsess over their own reviews.
I simply rate books as I finish reading them, and if you'd like a full review, check out my Instagram - @bookandbeerreview - where I keep it light, funny, and never disrespect fellow authors!
I got this as a Secret Santa present and probably would not have picked it up otherwise (clearly, for good reason).
The Good: - Easy, quick read - The author has a fun & cute Instagram page where she reviews books and craft beer
The Bad: - This book read like it was written by a teenager writing about adults because the characters literally act and speak like they’re still in high school. - Dialogue between characters had a weird lack of conjunctions that was distracting (e.g., characters always said “we are,” “they are,” never “we’re” or “they’re”) - Weird randomly cheesy phrases thrown in everywhere - It’s like the author couldn’t decide what genre this book was supposed to be. It was entirely all over the place - first there’s marital drama, then friend drama, some sort of murder mystery that gets completely forgotten for a majority of the book, a plot about the protagonist becoming an influencer, a pregnancy/fertility plot, and then the “big twist” that was just… dumb - The aforementioned “big twist” occurs within the last 20 pages of the book and the murder mystery that’s supposed to be the focus of the plot is barely acknowledged until the end - The author repetitively mentions very specific businesses/happenings/events local to her hometown. I understand that she wanted to write about the place she grew up but it seemed like a cheap attempt at creating depth in the setting without trying, not to mention, the readers don’t really care the exact name of the place the protagonist got lunch or where she gets beer. Sorry. - Missing commas - Protagonist rants about tipping/how to treat customer service workers in a very heavy handed way that is clearly the author’s voice. I am all for good tipping etiquette and have worked in food service for years, but the commentary was out of place and unnecessary. - The “evil mother in law” trope that was exceedingly aggressive - Characters seem to reconcile huge differences in the matter of 5 minute conversations - Lastly, I also just found the main character insufferable
A refreshing change from the overdone typical mystery template. Unique + addictive. This book drew me in, kept my interest throughout...but that ending!!! That ending left me with my jaw on the floor!!! A must read for all mystery lovers. Cannot wait to see this turned into a movie/series. 5 stars.
I enjoyed this! Cozy mystery vibes about a girl who suffers the devastating loss of her parents after she graduates from high school. 10 years later she returns to her home town for her reunion and when another catastrophic event takes place, she questions everything and every one she knew from her years growing up in her small Michigan town. I love a good mystery and then to have the unexpected turns show up were an added bonus!
This story is a loosely-knit narrative that attempts to entertain, yet surprise the reader. It does neither. As a grown woman who is still living the glory days of high school, the main character is in a story that is little more than a who-done-it that leaves little to the imagination as to the perpetrators of this girl’s miserable existence. Throwing in the Delta County place references does little to make this Escanaba native appreciate it.
This reads like a thriller Reddit post that elaborates too long on boring bits and has a few twists to keep you engaged long enough to realize you wasted your time.
I’m quite shocked that this book is considered a “thriller” by some people. I’d barely classify it as a mystery. I feel like it started in the direction of a mystery, then became like a domestic drama, then the mystery is magically solved and someone is in jail and the book ends. I’m very confused at the crazy hype all over TikTok… I found myself quite bored and continually waiting for something exciting. I guess it was a shocking ending, but it was so out of nowhere that it didn’t hit me as hard as it should have.
I will say, I do follow JL Hyde on TikTok and I think she’s the sweetest woman ever and I am happy to support her, especially as an indie author. But I was disappointed at the book not being a thriller at all (like it’s advertised).
Okay, allow me to pick my jaw up off the floor to write this review. I started reading this book around 4 pm, then had to take a two hour ish break around 7:30 with only two chapters remaining. At that point in time, I was so very happy to have read this book and kicking myself for leaving it to sit on my TBR for as long as I did. I thought I knew where those last two chapters were going to take me. I was ready! I was ecstatic! And then….
I read them. And I just. I haven’t recovered.
I’ll tell you what, it’s difficult to shock me. I do a lot of reading, ya know? But this had me speechless.
Also, this was totally set to be a 5 star read but ONE of the twists in the last two chapters angered me so I just couldn’t, and I had to do 4. BUT I STILL LOVED IT OKAY?!
4=I LOVED IT BUT ID CHANGE ONE THING 5=I’D CHANGE NOTHING
Thank you to my friend Sammie (sammies_booked on IG) for sending me a copy because she knew I needed to read this one.
I seriously NEED a sequel!! Delta County was amazing and did my hometown so much justice. I caught myself smiling at the references to places and memories Hyde mentioned. Thank you for writing a book that shows our true UP beauty. Now please write another! ❤️
Little did you know that Delta County is very special to me. I was raised in Gladstone, Michigan, Delta County. I loved growing up in The Upper Penninsula, as the people are quite unique and special.
I have this book 2 stars for the twist ending and that is it. The writing was sub par. Weak characterization. It felt like something I wrote in intro to creative writing back in 2007. Like a college kid attempting to be a sophisticated writer.
I’m done getting books recommendations from social media frenzy. This was books touted as a thriller….
This book was all over the place. I thought I was reading a thriller. Then it turned into a romance. Then, a social commentary about tipping the service industry?
4.5 amazing stars, Ms Hyde! I read this book in less than a day, which very rarely happens for me! I loved the writing and the way the story was laid out in a very simple, easy to follow dual timeline. Will definitely be purchasing more JL Hyde books. My only regret is how long I let this book sit on my TBR pile.
Holy guacamole!!!!! This book was an absolute page turner!!!! I can legitimately say that this is one book I wasn’t ready to end and I truly want to read it again!!!
Delta County is about a woman named Heather who returns back to her hometown for a 10 year high school reunion. Coming home is difficult for Heather because 10 years prior one of the biggest tragedies happened to her. Being back she ends up having to relive what happened that night and finds out that maybe everything was not as it seemed.
From the moment I woke up I grabbed this book headed to my couch and read it one sitting. This is an easy quick read that kept my attention throughout. Categorised as a thriller I would say more of domestic drama/ cozy mystery. I was invested in the characters and had my self thanking my lucky stars that I was blessed to have a mother in law that I like… Yes Heathers mother in law is sooooooooo irritating! And I’m sure a lot of people will be able to relate to Heather 😅
The reveal had me shouting expletives and I really hope there is a sequel because I want to know more on the aftermath of the characters.
Although it took me months to finish, I was able to pick it up each time it became available to check out! This is one I didn’t figure out…..and the ending, let’s just say if a movie isn’t made….someone missed out on a blockbuster!
I should have known this book would have been a waste of my time the moment the main character sits down with a “Colleen Hoover tearjerker” like the author and Colleen are friends in real life. This book was undeniably terrible and every time it gave you a blip of mystery or intrigue it would then give you another 50 pages of mundane day to day bullshit. Your parents and best friend die of suspicious circumstances, you are ready to investigate and find out the truth- only to speed ahead a year where your now an influencer and having sex everyday with your attractive doctor husband? Where’s the drive? Where’s the characters motivation for anything? The book describes every little cafe in the small town in detail but gives us 0 meat in their characters, who are all flawed except for the main character who is perfect.
Fuck this book end rant

Delta County is everything you dream of in a book. It has suspense/drama/enemies/murders/INCREDIBLE TWISTS/ amazing character development/NO plot holes.
I think of this book on a regular basis, and I have found myself comparing to every book I’ve read since no matter the genre.
I can’t wait for Midnight in Delta County. I NEED answers, JL Hyde!!!!
First, since Delta County seems that this is J.L. Hyde's debut novel, let me congratulate her, because publishing a novel is no small feat. I am also VERY impressed with the speed at which Hyde can crank a novel out, since she has apparently published seven books since September 2021.
I also want to tip my hat to Hyde for choosing an actual small town in Michigan, rather than making one up. Although the setting never quite jelled for me, I think Hyde did a great job of establishing what this northern small town would look like for people who have never stepped foot in one.
That being said, this book has all the hallmarks of a debut novel. Opening with a long-winded infodump, Delta County is a mystery of sorts that never really commits to any of the deaths that are driving the plot. When it is not following its own mysteries, Delta County dabbles with being women's lit, chick lit and family drama. The secondary characters are stereotypical to the point of cruel caricature, such as the cartoonishly evil mother-in-law hated by even her own husband. Our main character Heather goes on frequent rants about inane topics that feel like the author's own two cents, such as the importance of paperbacks over Kindles and the etiquettes of tipping. The "reveal" of the plot doesn't happen until the last ten pages, and those last ten pages are a slapdash whirlwind of wrapping the story (such as it is) up neatly.
On the other hand, there is a true genius to Delta County, regardless of whether that genius is intentional or not. This is a tedious tale about tedious people, and the shallowness of the plot actually feels completely accurate for the shallowness of the characters.
Heather complains about how tiresome it is to be the housewife of a medical student yet show little drive to become something other than a housewife. In true millennial housewife fashion, the career she settles on is an influencer, centering on DIY home projects, recipes and small town charm after her and her husband flee Chicago for their hometown. Heather rejoices at the chance to reunite her high school clique, because all of these characters are perpetually stuck in the social dynamics of their small town high school. Heather sort of wants to pursue the mysteries that have happened around her, but that's only when she's not trying to get pregnant or busy building up her follower base.
This is a story about a millennial influencer with a short attention span and a chronic case of self-victimization trying to solve a murder mystery/small town conspiracy. As infuriating as that sounds, it is also incredibly compelling (in the worst way). A bit like a car crash or a disastrous livestream, I could not look away from Delta County even when I was left rolling my eyes.
Delta Country really and truly was such a wild ride of a read, I feel compelled to read more of Hyde's books just to form a better opinion of what I actually think.
This was like a cozy type thriller if that even makes sense. I enjoyed it. I will say it wasn’t as fast paced for a thriller as I would like, but nonetheless it was still a good read. I enjoyed the different time lines, and how it kept me guessing.
Holy. Cow! I’m speechless. This book kept me hooked from start to finish & I absolutely did not see the ending coming at all. I loved the characters + small town vibes. I can’t wait to check out more of J.L. Hyde’s books!
So this was alright. It was probably more interesting to me as it again, takes place in our area. Some parts seemed to draaaaaag on and the writing was eh at times. However, it kept me entertained and had a good twist at the end which makes me wish for a little more. Only because I like full closure in my books which usually does not happen 🤪

REVIEW**
This book was recommended as an all time favorite, must read thriller by a popular bookish content creator on tiktok. I had high hopes for this one. Unfortunately, it did not live up to expectations at all. The story dragged on, felt very juvenile, terribly poor character development and the plot lacked cohesiveness. We were looking to solve the mystery of who, if anyone killed the parents and Kelly but the narrator doesn’t concentrate on this hardly at all- an email and a one description of a few lunch meetings to try to give the story some forward motion (it didn’t work).
I was over 95% through the book until we started getting into any type of conclusion. We were supposed to be surprised the mother in law, Mitzi was to blame but the author failed to give us any other leads. Some parts even felt a little cringy (like the repeated referring to a group of women as SHARKS, the need for the constant use of the nickname ‘Kell Bell’, the ‘Toilet Paper Vixons’ thing. A grown woman stuck trying to bring back the ‘glory days’ of her high school years in this cringey (and very sad attempt) at a thriller. It almost went to my DNF but I persisted- would not recommend.

I miss the days when I was too young and carefree to worry about much of anything. Now I mentally examine every possible outcome before I do anything at all.
I was hooked on this book so quickly. I haven’t had a book that I wanted to read everyday in a long time and this broke that streak. Part of it might be the fact it’s set in my home state and I could recognize the landmarks and locations the author mentioned. The other part might that I could relate to the main character through some of the loss she experienced but honestly the character development and dynamics are so relatable for so many.
There’s so much to this book… “who done it” plot, loss/grief, relationships (marriage, friendship, in-laws, community). I don’t want to give anything away but the ending shocked me and I really hope there’s a sequel in the making!
They say everything happens for a reason and you should trust the process, but that was a little hard to do when I was suffering unimaginable losses.
AMAZING is an understatement! This book is a quick, easy read that leaves you wanting more. I could only hope she does another one to answer all the questions it leaves the reader with. Absolutely love that it’s based in Delta County. When I first started reading this book I had to remind myself that it was fiction because it seemed to be so real! Hyde does a great job at painting this beautiful picture of Delta County and I caught myself knowing exactly how the main character (Heather) feels about the peacefulness of Delta County compared to big city life. Forever my roots are in Delta County 🤍
Well that was a fun read! So much fun reading a book about your home town, knowing the places the author is talking about and visualizing all the places. And kudo's to the author! Great writing, fun mystery and complete surprise ending. She did such a great job of bringing you into the story but no quite giving away all the details. Actually quite like how the sixth sense movie shocked you at the end.
