A stressed-out prosecutor needs help from a charming ex-con. What could possibly go wrong?
District Attorney Clara Hitchens faces two major battles—exposing a corrupt DA, who might be her boss, while handling a high-profile trial with a victim who isn’t sympathetic. When Hitch runs into Nate Conner, he’s the last person she would expect support from.
Newly released from jail, Conner has his own problems. A thug is pressuring him for money, and his little sister Kaylee is missing. Determined to go straight, Conner decides that Hitch is the one person he can trust with his suspicions.
They develop a plan, but everything goes sideways.
The snitch who testified against Conner turns up dead, and all the evidence points to him. Then another key player is murdered, and Kaylee goes deeper into hiding, On top of all that, Hitch’s trial gets derailed when the victim’s OnlyFans videos are revealed in court—a devastating blow.
Can Conner and Hitch beat the odds to bring down the corrupt prosecutor, win the trial, and find Kaylee in time to save her?
I write the bestselling Detective Jackson mystery/thriller series—a four-time Readers Favorite award winner—as well as the Agent Dallas series, the Extractor thrillers, and provocative standalone thrillers. My 30 novels have been highly praised and have sold more than a million copies.
I reside in Eugene, Oregon where my many of my novels are set, and I'm also an award-winning journalist who earned the Grand Neal. When not plotting murders, I enjoy standup comedy, cycling, social networking, and attending mystery conferences. I've also been known to jump out of airplanes.
I've come across more than a few books lately with amateurish writing, so when I picked this one up and found that it was actually well-written, I was quite happy. While working on a case, District Attorney Clara Hitchens realizes someone in the DA's office has been illegally obtaining information on defendants. After running into ex-con Nate Conner, who tells her that he believes someone was planted to get information out of him after his arrest, the two end up working together to uncover what's going on, as well as trying to find Conner's missing sister.
I particularly enjoyed the court scenes, as I thought they were some of the better ones that I've read (lawyer's daughter, here!). The story was well-paced, there were times when I couldn't put the book down, and one reveal had me picking my jaw up off the floor. I could have done without the romantic sparks between two characters, and at times, characters were overly judgmental, but the way the story played out was quite entertaining. I was pleasantly surprised at how well everything came together. Solid legal mystery-thriller. It seemed to me that this might be the start of a series, and I'm hoping I'm right.
Oh, and if a lot of cussing bothers you, this would be a good choice, as there were only a handful of instances that weren't substituted with something kid-friendly.
Trigger warnings: Murder, blood, violence, drugs, discussions/descriptions of sexual assault
Thanks to Teresa Burrell, L.J. Sellers, and Bookstagrammers.com for providing me with a digital copy!
Burrell and Sellers & Conner & Hitch - perfect pairs!
It’s a well-written twisty mystery with a lot going on! Burrell and Sellers have come up with a winning storyline and complex, well-developed characters. Couldn’t help but like Conners, Nicole, and even Kaylee - all sympathetic characters in their own way. Hitch and Leahy are heroes, with integrity and respect for the rule of law. All in all, a really good book!
THIS WAS SO GOOD. I read it straight thru without stopping. Yes, that good. A Deputy DA is into alot more than his job. Murder, greed, manipulation all the way to the top. You don't know who to trust. This was tense, fast moving. Past secrets revealed. Understanding the personal lives of each helps you understand how things can go so wrong so fast. I hope the last chapter means we will see more of Connor and Hitch. Well written and so worth the read.
An exquisite book covering various aspects of the justice system!!!
A book by two authors kindled my interest and curiosity. As I started to read, the book took over me completely and led me very smoothly over the lives of Nate Conner, the attorney who wants to encourage him - Carla Hitchens/ Hitch, his supportive sister Nicole, his other sisters one of whom is missing. Nate Conner is just out of prison and has to do various things to keep himself on the straight and narrow with the help of the attorney Hitch to all the people who are close to her. When Nate Conner shares with her the way he was indicted because of a snitch who was in the holding cell with him and has been heard raving about it, Hitch decides to support Nate, collect the proof, evidence and witnesses to go after the official in the DA's office and get rid of the corruption.
Conner and Hitch work hard with the support of others, face obstacles such as the murders of the snitch and the corrupt attorney and strive against all odds to know which one has to read this awesome book.
The author duo have done a tremendous job of writing this scintillating and brilliant book highlighting the faults and weaknesses prevailing in the legal system and the brave people who are willing to fight against it and bring it to light.
Huge Kudos to the author duo and the brave warriors of Justice, Conner and Hitch!! Waiting eagerly for more!
This book took me really into it, and if I hadn’t been drowning in homework I would have read it in one day, yet in my free time I couldn’t put it down. It is that good. While reading the only thought that was in my mind was the bad look and the bad timing that Conner had, I felt so stressed and gloomy for him, though he was always trying his best to do it in the right way. The love he has for his sisters also was beautiful not to mention how supportive Nicole was. Then Hitch appeared and I only thought “powerful.” In the beginning, she seems kind of tough it was the result of her years of experience and lessons gained in the “land of men” even so she has a good heart and is passionate about her job. I really like her. The whole of Kaylee’s mystery keeps me anxious, and the way all the events get connected was the main reason why this book is so addictive. Gosh, and the plot twist caught me out off guard. I don’t know much about the legal system and when I was having moral troubles about the snitches thing I got an explanation later that was a good thing by the way. Leahy is a good man and I’m so happy Heather got justice. I really, really liked No Consent. Plus, I know I’m not the only one who paired Conner and Hitch.
Great whodunnit read !! I love the authors personal insight into the judicial system and how some rotten apples can really have an impact on peoples lives . It kept you guessing til the end
Trigger warning: this book deals with themes such as: sexual assault, rape, violence, drugs, addiction and death
“I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking.” “ And that in a nutshell is your problem. I suggest you start. Right now”
This book was a juridical thriller that kept me excited and curious until the very end. For every fan of mystery, drama and for everyone who wants an insight of how a trial goes , how a lawyer’s life is , with its pros and cons, this is the book for you ! I loved every second of the debate taking place in it : the accusations , the defence, the witnesses , the way our main character studies the jury … it was all fascinating and the theme at the center of it … even more so ! This book highlighted a concept, involving some stereotypes and harmful words, that should be more than clear for everyone, but it seems it isn’t: rape doen’t mean CONSENT ! I really liked how the juridical part intertwined with a more intimate drama: a family trying to come up from the bottom … in a lot of different senses of the word. This was definitely a good book and I’m really glad I had the chance to read it.
“Everything in life is open to some possible or imaginary doubt”
Nate Connor has just been released from jail vowing to go straight but things keep getting in his way. He owes money to a not so nice person, his little sister is missing and finding out that he was actually set up is just the beginning of his troubles. When he bumps into D.A. Clara Hitchens (Hitch) he feels like his luck may turn for the better. With Hitch and his attorney Jerry Leahy on his side he sets off to find his sister and clear his name.
No Consent doesn't give you a second to be bored. From the first page you are caught up in Nate Connors world. The characters are well written and very likable. There are twists and turns, some you see coming and some you don't but in the end it gets wrapped up with a neat little bow.
This is my first book by L.J. Sellers but I will be looking for more to read. As for Teresa Burrell I have read all of The Advocate series and Tuper series and as always she just doesn't disappoint. This collaboration was made in heaven and I am hooked. More.....yes please.
No Consent is a new mystery thriller by Teresa Burrell and L.J. Sellers exploring the corruption schemes in the judicial system. Hitch is a DA who is actually trying to seek justice for her client in a high case trial. Connor is an ex-con who is searching for his missing sister while trying to be on the straight path.
This book is just perfect for all the mystery lovers out there. It portrays a shocking and informative background of the judicial system. The plot is well developed and the characters have done justice to what they are made. The book was a slow pace at the beginning for me, but after a few pages, the authors have crafted very well the twists and turns which totally make you question everything.
Overall, the book is a complete page-turner with the urge to give justice for what is right. But look for a trigger warning before starting this book. I want to say a huge thank you to the team of Bookstagrammers.com and the authors Teresa Burrell and L.J. Sellers for sending me a review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
First, you need to know there are never spoilers in my reviews, but here's what you REALLY need to know: Well written first in series with twists and turns that will keep the reader engaged in this non-stop action thriller. Characters intertwine with each other in several linked storylines that fit together seamlessly but are interesting in and of themselves. Characters that you love the love and love to hate are present front and center and on occasion, even have you thinking 'they completely deserved what they got.' Bad guys partner with worse guys and good guys ultimately prevail and attorneys go out of their way to help a felon who is being set up to spend the rest of his life in jail for crimes not only did he not commit, but for trying to just plain catch a break and do the right thing. Conner and Hitch are an unlikely but likable pair that headline this book that you'll be glad you took a chance on. One-click now, you won't be sorry.
I absolutely loved No Consent and highly recommend it!
This is the first in a series written by Teresa Burrell and L.J. Sellers. I've read and enjoyed every book written by Ms. Burrell, but have never read anything by Ms. Sellers so I was interested to see how this would work out. It was great! The two authors meshed their styles smoothly and I never knew where one picked up or the other left off.
The story moves quickly, is one that pulled me in right away, and comes to a great conclusion. There are twists and turns and the characters were very well done.
If you like mysteries, pick this up and check out these authors' previous books. I know I will be reading some by L.J. Sellers now!
Thank you to the publisher and authors for an ARC at my request. All thoughts in this review are my own and happily given.
Looks like LJ Sellers has another great series in the making (or at least I hope it's a series). No Consent is about a lady lawyer, and a guy with bad luck who is regularly in the wrong place at the wrong time. Very "visual" characters in this book, and I fell in love with Hitch and Conner and his whole family. Cannot wait to see where she goes with this in the next book in the series. I'm hoping maybe a little bit of romance. Lots of action... a thrilling read. LJ has teamed up with Teresa Burrell for this book.
Normally, I wouldn't read a book with the plotlines revolving around rape; however, Teresa Burrell is one of my favorite authors, so, I overruled my reticence. I'm glad I did. Ms. Burrell and Ms. Sellers have excellently managed all aspects of that discomforting subject, as well as the intriguing characters, modern technology, and interesting settings. I am pleased with the resolutions and encouraged by the outcome and suggestion for possible future novels. Kudos!
As always Teresa has done it again. Her and L.J. Sellers makes an incredible team. I loved how eventually Hitch stood up for Nate in the end. They both worked together to find his sister even though he was a suspect in not only one murder but two. The end will surprise you. The story is good and well written. The attention to detail and the compassion that is shown throughout is only a testament to good writers. I highly recommend this book and all the others written by these authors.
This is a fast paced and exciting thriller that doesn't disappoint. I can't find fault with anything in this tale where the main characters' uncover corruption and find justice for victims of various crimes. It is, to me, all too likely to be based on truth and I rooted all the way through for Conner and Hitch to find the evidence they needed without breaking too many rules or laws to enable them to expose the persons involved. I received a free ARC copy for an honest review.
This was a fast-paced thriller, and an amazing book overall. "No Consent" is a book that will shock you. This book was well written, and also mentions a big issue we have in today's society. I usually don't read this type of genre, but this book was written thoughtfully, and the authors took time to make sure this book was interesting to read. It also wasn't slow-paced, and always surprised me. Highly recommend!!
I enjoyed No Consent. It’s been a minute since I read a good, twisty mystery that centers around the courtroom and judicial system. I kept turning the pages wanting to find out where Kaylee disappeared to and how all the storylines were connected. Another intriguing aspect was the inclusion of OnlyFans and raising the question of what is considered consensual. If you’re looking for a fast read involving corruption and courtroom drama, I recommend this book.
Conner and Hitch make a good investigative team. Hitch is a prosecutor while Conner is a felon on parole. Connor tries to clear his name, knowing he was set up, while at the same time locate his youngest sister who has been missing since he was inside. The stories keep colliding with interesting results.
I am a fan of LJ Sellers, but always worry a bit if ill like new characters and adding an additional writer I crossed my fingers and dove in. As usual, I was not disappointed. The characters were likable and real with a great storyline for them to develop in.
I have read every book of Teresa Burrell's to date, and was very excited to see her work with another author and was not disappointed in the least! The characters have a rich authentic feel and are easy to get to know. Can't wait to read more adventures with Conner and Hitch.. hopefully a relationship??
I enjoyed this book so much! LJ is a favorite of mine so i had high expectations and she didn’t disappoint. This book was wonderful. I loved the characters and cant wait to see how their relationship develops.
*** received a free copy from the authors in exchange of a honest review. This words are mine ****
The description of NO Consent got my attention for the fact that Conner try to change his life and try to be a better person even if the world is against him!
This book made me get in rage about how people are tagged just for 1 mistake. It is clear that the "lets give another chance" don't exist for people that got the bad luck to make a wrong choice once or decide to take another way to get there life good.
Hitch is one of that persons that actually believe in her work and will do it correctly and she is not ok with the corruption of her system. She will fight and make sure to point the finger to all that just used power to get what they wanted. - She was one of my favorite characters for sure!
The trial of Heather was one of the thing I wanted to see and was hoping justice will be done and gosh it took my nerves so often that I started to think "oh no.... the victim never ask for it.... be human please"
I give a 4 stars since I missed some details regarding Heather trial but that is my opinion ofc! The plot was not focus on that part. It's my curiosity working!
As a long-standing fan of the Advocate a series, I was looking forward to Teresa Burrell's latest novel. I was greatly disappointed. I won't say it's a worst book I've read but it sure is up there in the top 10. The characters were not developed enough that the reader shared one iota about them. The story line rambled around and at some times was downright silly.
Whew. First books in a new series is hard for me. There’s just so much information and so many characters. I enjoyed this first book and will definitely be watching for the next. This was fast paced and there wasn’t drama/conflict just for the sake of it.
I have read all the Advocate series and enjoyed them all. This one did not measure up. I got bored and finally skipped to the last chapter to find out “who done it.”
Once I started this story, it was had to put down. It starts with Connor being released from prison and his attempt to go straight. It also presents Hitch who is prosecuting a case where everything is not going as originally planned. Connor has set a quest to locate his younger sister who has not been in touch with the family for several months. While he begins his search, an individual who testified against Connor is found dead and all of the evidence puts to Connor as the main suspect. Hitch meanwhile learns that the informant that she was using as a witness had been placed in the cell where the individual she was prosecuting was also to gather information that could be used against the defendant.
Connor bumped into Hitch accidently and apologized. Later Connor and Hitch began working together to locate Connor's sister. Connor through talks with some of her sister's friends eventually discovered a location where she might be staying. When he got to that location, he discovered another dead body. This individual was a person in a high position of government. Because Connor was a suspect in the earlier killing, he also was thought to be one here as well even though he was the one that notified the police.
As the search went on, Connor's cases and Hitch's seem to be connected. To found out how they came together and whether Conner located his sister plus also learn who the individuals were that Connor was suspected of killing, you must read this book. It will also explain who the real killers were and how Hitch's trial was resolved, then you must read this book. You won't be disappointed.
