Paradise Bay #4

Resting Beach Face

Rate this book
He’s my long-lost best friend. Apparently he got crazy hot over the last decade. He’s back in town indefinitely. And I’m supposed to be marrying someone else.

True or false: Going fifteen years without your boyfriend popping the question a bit of a red flag.

True. (At least in our case.)

Also true: My boyfriend has been making wedding plans—just not with me.

So when my long-lost bestie, Heath Robinson, arrives back on the island to look after his mum (after a horrible moped accident), it’s only natural that I want to spend all my free time with him while he’s here.

After all, who better to help me forget my heartache but an old friend?

An old friend who did not have all those muscles back in high school, or the successful businessman swagger he’s got going on now.

Not that I should be noticing, because … friends. Plus, he’s going back to the U.S. as soon as his mum doesn’t need him anymore. Also, I’m nursing a pretty bad heartbreak and I’d never turn Heath into a rebound guy.

But what if he’s not a rebound guy? What if he was the right guy all along?

Resting Beach Face is a swoony, laugh-out-loud second-chance romance featuring a woman with a broken heart and the only man who can put it back together. It’s got a hilarious moped-riding, hard-partying septuagenarian (and her crew), possibly the most awkward meet cute of all time, and plenty of deliciously romantic moments. Oh, and it’s also the gold medal winner of the Reader’s Favorite Chick Lit Award … so that’s got to be a good sign, no?

Some great moments in here, and I had to smile several times. But it wasn’t all I hoped for.

Resting Beach Face is a fun romantic comedy that doesn’t take itself too seriously. It knows what it is and leans into it with all its weight. Melanie Summers went deep into the rom-com archives to find all the romantic comedy clichés we know and love.

The story follows Hadley and Heath, two high school friends who lost touch after graduation. And yes you guessed it they bump into each other after a long time only to find long-forgotten feelings bubble up to the surface. They navigate through awkward moments and fun banter as they try and figure out their friendship.

The characters are depicted in a way that you get to know them just enough to understand why they behave the way they do but, not so much that you feel you know them inside and out.

The story evolves quickly with not a moment to waste to get to the good stuff. Written with hilariously cringe moments that will make you giggle and wish that life had moments like that for real. Best of all Melanie added just enough almost steamy moments you wish she took a bit further if you know what I mean, but that's just it she keeps you wanting more.

An entertaining read that might not make you contemplate the existence of the universe but sure will put a smile on your face and a skip in your step. A good energetic romantic comedy perfect for the summer holidays or just when you need a little pick me up.

I am however not sure how the name of the book relates to the story but hey it’s catchy.

This was just the worst. I tapped out at about 80% because I just couldn't anymore, and that was more than enough to justify a rating.

First time with this writer and most definitely the last. I have no love for writers who create silly heroines, imply that they are fat or otherwise unattractive and make them awkward and clumsy or losers with no ambition. Or both. And then make them immature, crass and slovenly as well. I don't relate to characters like this and never will - nor would I ever want to.

Aye, it's a rom-com. So bloody what. Is it an unwritten rule somewhere that in a rom-com the heroine must humiliate herself repeatedly? Jesus this cow was so awkward and just stupid it made me uncomfortable. This book wasn't even a little funny. I can't be arsed with writers whose so-called humour constantly comes at the expense of the character I'm supposed to relate to and root for, or that have no concept of class.

Melanie's books NEVER disappoints. I've loved every single book of hers and it's safe to say that it was one of those too! The queen of rom-coms, she delivers imperfectly perfect stories filled with laughter, humour, romance and swoon.

This 4th book in The Paradise Bay series contains friends-to-lovers, second chance romance, sassy gangsta-mom & breathtaking views.

When Hadley finds her boyfriend of 12 years, is ready to marrying someone else (that someone whom she teaches to dance) her life shatters. Heath is about to be made CFO at his company in New York, when he gets a call about his mom's accident & rushes home.

Hadley & Heath were best friends & inseparable back in the day. Top it all Heath was in love with Hadley & she didn't have a clue.
So when years later they kept running into each other, old feelings (for Heath) & new sparks (for Hardly) appears bringing them into confusing yet hilarious situations.

The characters were adorable to begin with. Both pining for each other from a distance, they were so goofy around each other. And not to forget their first meet after so many years; downright funny.
I loved so many things especially Heath's mom & her savage personality & Hadley standing up to her mom.

I was so glad to see a new book in the Paradise Bay series I couldn't refrain to pick it up.

Resting Beach Face was an entertaining, lovely and fast paced story.

Hadley is a dance teacher for the island resort patrons. Heath left New York to go back on the island to help his mother to recover from an accident. They were friends since they were kids but they haven't been in touch anymore, so they are shocked to see each other again after ten years. Will them rekindle their friendship? Or their relationship is only for the time by they are in the same place at the same time?

I liked Hadley growth, from a girl who complies to everything her mother says to a woman who claims her independence. Heath is really too sweet, but sometimes I've hoped he could be braver expressing his feelings.

I've enjoyed to be on this beautiful caribbean island again and to follow Hadley and Heath journey under the warm sun while here was a freezing winter day.

I don’t know what I was expecting but it wasn’t this. In short, this was boring. For some reason it feels like it took me forever to finish this book. It was fine. Not great, not awful, just ok.
What first drew me to it was the blurb. It sounded exactly like something I would enjoy greatly. The beginning was interesting but before the halfway mark I was already skimming in hope of getting to something interesting again. The characters were bland but mostly fine, and the storyline predictable. Based on the blurb I was expecting more. There was no chemistry between Hadley and Heath, the main characters, and I didn't feel their love at all. There wasn't enough to their relationship to make me buy the idea that they went from "friends who haven't seen eachother in years" to "ohmygodiloveyou" the way they did. On top of that I had a hard time connecting to Hadley from the get-go. The dialogue had that stilted quality that draws attention to its own artifice. And on top of all that, the writing style didn't suit me. I loved Minerva though. She was great and made me laugh. It wasn't a bad book, far from it, but nothing really held my attention enough to say it's a good book.
Overall this story started out with lots of potential, but it fell pretty flat toward the end. Honestly, the synopsis was more entertaining than the book itself. I don't think reading it was a waste of time but I was hoping for more.

***I received this book for free from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Yay! We get to come back for more stories from Paradise Bay. Childhood best friends who find themselves in each other’s orbits for the first time in a decade when their respective lives get turned upside down. Will reconnecting after so long finally bring Heath and Hadley together once and for all or will it prove that friends is all they’ll ever be? I adored this pair, both together and individually. Some of Hadley’s doormat tendencies left me cringing, but it was easy to see how she’d developed them. And even though Heath has his moment of supreme jerk-ness, I completely understand the driving force behind it. I find it really interesting that several of the same messages that I found in the previous book in the series were also in this one, though presented in different ways: judgement, expectations, self-worth, and what it means to be an active participant in your own life. But above all those deep and important messages, there was love and humor. Because at the end of the day, those are two of the most important things in life.

It was okay, just lacked that special spark the rest of this author’s books have.

I was disappointed that it didn’t connect as much to the rest of the series. We saw some of the original characters only for brief moments.

This also centers around cheating, which is not my favorite trope.

I did enjoy returning to Paradise Bay Resort!

I love Melanie’s paradise bay series! Whisked Away is one of my favorite romances ever. I enjoyed reading Resting Beach Face. Great book to read by the beach or when you want to be by the beach.

Minerva was such a spitfire. I would love to know a woman like her in real life! I liked the themes of friendship running through this book. This book was a super fast-paced easy read.

Fun and Funny Friends to Lovers in Paradise!

This book brings us back to Paradise Bay (YAY!) and although you don't need to read the other in the series - you will want to! Heath and Hadley go from friends supporting each other to finally realizing what is in their hearts, and there are a lot of laughs and hijinks courtesy of his mom along the way. Hoping for more in the series! Enjoy!

I did finish

I read every page. Ok, I did skim a lot there toward the end.
It was the most twisting, turning, miscommunication, convoluted ‘romance’ I believe I have ever read.
It just went on and on and on, while at the same time, going absolutely nowhere.
It was clean, I’ll give it that. There was no passion, no chemistry, only one kiss through the entire ‘romance’; absolutely no reason to keep reading, beyond I was stuck where I had no Wi-Fi and therefore couldn’t download another choice. But I certainly would never recommend anybody else put themself in that position. Nor would I recommend this exercise in frustration, being passed off as a romance.

2* and all of them for the Minerva character. Almost everything else in this book is best described as 'insipid'.

The heroine is deeply messed up by her emotionally abusive parents. And while I appreciated her growing a backbone to stand up to them, I didn't think she was anywhere near ready for a healthy relationship of her own, and the relationship she was heading toward had very little to recommend it based on how it was shown in the book.

The hero spent the entire book with his head up his a** - not a very attractive look. He was much better as a friend.

Review of Resting Beach Face
By: Melanie Summers

Delightfully Funny Romance

Heath Robinson and Hadley Jones had been best friends since 2nd grade. Back in high school, Hadley had fallen for one of the beefy football players, Chase Williams, while Heath remained a tall and skinny young man. He left right after graduation to go to New York to attend NYU and hasn’t been home since. In the meantime, Hadley gave up her dream of opening a dance studio and has been teaching dance moves to vacationers at the Paradise Bay Resort on Valentina Island, waiting for her boyfriend, the same one she fell for in high school, to get well established in his job.

Heath is making the biggest presentation of his career, one that he hopes will place him in the corner office with millions in cash bonuses. However, just as the presentation starts, he gets a call that his 72-year-old mother has been in a horrible accident and that he needs to get home immediately. She was on her moped and was hit by a bread truck and pinning her leg between the moped and the road. Her injuries are such that she is going to need to have a long time in which to recuperate. Heath’s boss is not happy ….

From this point on, the story, more or less, focuses on Heath and Hadley making a reconnection, along with their respective problems. Hadley discovers that Heath has changed a LOT and is no longer a skinny kid or even a skinny man. Heath discovers that Hadley has developed some real curves, but is still disgusted that she is with Chase, or is she? This is also where Ms. Summers throws out the first of her big laugh out loud funny situations. I won’t tell you what they are, but I almost guarantee that you’ll find them funny as well.

I loved the character development in this book – not only the main characters, but the supporting (or unsupportive, as the case may be) cast of characters. The world building is equally well done, with various descriptions of island locations and the Paradise Bay Resort. I also loved the humor in this book that includes several belly-laughs and lots of cackling laughs. In the meantime, a slow romance is building between the main characters. Ms. Summers is the best at this type of novel!

Any time I see that the author of a rom-com is Melanie Summers I know for a fact that I am going to be in for a true gem of a reading experience! She has the unique ability to take situations that we can all relate to or even have experienced ourselves and turn them on their head by giving them a pure comedic slant which allows the reader to appreciate them even more! One could say that Hadley was going nowhere fast in her long, long-term relationship and she was the only one that was not aware that it was not going to end well for her. Of course, that was not all her fault since she had to have had the most unrealistic and selfishly inconsiderate parents to have walked the face of the earth! Thank goodness for Minerva who had to be the coolest senior citizen that was just what Hadley needed to help her realize her true course in life. Then there was Heath who was able to claim Minerva as his mother even if he was not sure that that was any form of pleasure or honor. Heath returns to the town he had left far behind him in his pursuit of fame and fortune which he had achieved at the expense of becoming a driven workaholic who had a boss that always kept the promise of a partnership in the business just out of reach while keeping the temptation alive if Heath would just finalize one more deal which of course, led to another deal and another deal, etc. So was it fate that had Heath leaving the big city to take care of Minerva after she is injured in an accident involving her moped and a garbage truck of all things or was it a case of pure bad luck as he was prone to believe? I love how Ms. Summers manages to make the mundane hilarious and at the same time, incorporate her readers a good deal of self-introspection in the process. The romance between Hadley and Heath being a good case in point. They were able to learn so much not only about each other and what could be but also about themselves and the direction their individual lives had and were taking and how to find what they both needed to make them the complete and happy people they were always meant to be. I look forward to there hopefully being more books in this heartwarming series!

*3.5 stars Rounded up

This is oddly my first Melanie Summers book, even though this is the fourth in a series :P I received this book from Netgalley and Indigo Group.

Resting Beach Face is the story of two high school best friends, Hadley and Heath, who meet each other after years, and realize that they actually may have feelings for each other.

This book is a romantic comedy, and a really fun one at that. It is a prime example of the genre, with a lot of the regular rom-com tropes and clichés embedded in the story. This is not a bad thing though, because clearly, Summers knows the genre she's writing, and leans on it hard. I thought the plot in itself, although a little predictable at times, was just really endearing to read.

The characters were pretty fun. They're not explored very deeply, and don't seem to have too many layers to them, but Summers describes them just enough to understand their place in the plot and why they behave a certain way.
Hadley is a yoga instructor in a resort. She has grown up in a slightly conservative household, with her parents having a very old-world view on marriage, and the role of a woman and a man in it. Although Hadley doesn't personally subscribe to these views, they subconsciously make their way into her life. I think her character was incredibly relatable. She is passionate, and loyal, and funny. And when she finally stands up to her mother, it was so much fun!
Heath is the guy who secretly was in love with his best friend since high school, but could never gather the courage to tell her. When he comes back to the island after 10 years of not keeping in touch, he realizes that his feelings have not gone anywhere. He's a nice character as well, always trying to be the good friend.
Two characters that I really loved were Heath's mother Minerva, and Hadley's friend, Nora. Both these characters (especially the former) have an incredible personality, and make a great read!

There were a few laugh out loud moments in the book, and I really appreciated that. There were times, however, when I couldn't wait to just skip to the end. The title of the book is a cute one, but honestly, it doesn't seem to have any connection to the actual story, and that irks me a little. Overall it was a nice, breezy read.

I have had so much fun reading all of this series! And the ones connected to it!
I was excited that a new book in the series was coming out and set aside other reading to get to this one. Like others in the series, it’s a light and fun rom-com. Sometimes it’s nice to read a book that you just know will be a fun little escape.

Summers says in the afterwards, “I hope you enjoyed Hadley and Heath’s story. I hope you laughed out loud, sighed happily, and that their story left you feeling good.”
- I definitely did! And it did leave me feeling good.

Hadley and Heath were best friends growing up on Santa Valentina Island. But Heath went off to work in New York City, and Hadley stayed on the island working teaching dance classes at Paradise Bay resort and continuing to date her high school boyfriend, Chase. When Heath’s mom is in a bad accident he returns to the island to care for her, and sees Hadley for the first time in years. He really tries to suppress the feelings he’s always had for her as more than just friends. She still has her boyfriend. Until she doesn’t. Do these two friends have a chance at more?

There are several ups and downs. So many will they/won’t theys. So frustrating! I would’ve liked more time in the book to be about Hadley and Heath being honest and together. But ultimately I was happy with how it all plays out.
The journey to a HAE was a fun one. I really liked Hadley’s supportive friend Nora. Loved spunky Minerva!!! I enjoyed Hadley and Heath’s friendship. And I loved getting glimpses of past characters at Paradise Bay resort.

This book can definitely stand alone, but it’s so fun to read all 3 interconnected series in order! It has really been a fun reading adventure.
Will there be more?

** Don’t miss out on downloading Blissful Beach Face - a bonus Paradise Bay short that has a great addition to this story! Loved it! It should be included in the book, but it’s fun to find it and read it as a bonus.

I want to thank Netgalley & Melanie Summers for my copy of Resting Beach Face. This is book #4 in The Paradise Bay series. I didn’t realize at first this was a series and that was ok. It read like a stand alone and was entertaining.. This is chick Lit at its finest. Hadley Jones has been in love with Chase Williams, forever. They started dating in HS and now 15 years later they are still dating and Hadley is starting to wonder when they will get married. She wouldn’t care so much but everyone, family and friends won’t stop asking. She had a good job at a beautiful resort and an apartment. She believes they are waiting for Chase to get to the next level of his career. He travels all over the world and leaves Hadley a lot. Now Heath Robinson left Santa Valentina the minute he could. Once best friends Hadley and Heath lost touch when he moved to NY. He is back now taking care of his mother.. She had a terrible act and needs help from her son. Heath comes to help but hopes to get back to NY a quick and not lose a moment of work. He is trying to complete the biggest merger his company has ever handled.
While home Heath sees Hadley and they start to reconnect.. They were always best friends and they aren’t having any trouble friends again. This renewed friendship becomes so comfortable and peaceful. It brings them solace. It makes them think about their current relationships and really starting to wonder about life and where they are in it. Are their current situations going to make them happy. Whose hiding what? How can you live in from secrets? This is such a cute story of loves lost and found. I thought the characters were all great, they were human. They had flaws and hang ups but they were honest. I thought this was well written and clever. It was a quick read because I had to see how things were going to play out.. I wasn’t disappointed with the ending. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Resting Beach Face is the fourth book in the Paradise Bay series by Melanie Summers. This is the first one I have read and am pleased that each of the books can be read as a standalone. Yoga and dance instructor, Hadley Jones, has been dating Chase Williams for twelve years. There has not been a proposal yet, but Hadley is sure it will be soon. The last few months they haven't seen much of each other as Chase is working out of town. Hadley is giving dance lessons to a woman who wants to surprise her groom with a sexy dance at their upcoming wedding. Imagine Hadley's surprise when she finds out that the groom is Chase. Meanwhile, her BFF growing up and brother from another mother, Heath, has returned to Paradise Cove after his mother has a serious accident. He left after high school with plans to never return, not wanting to face Hadley, who he has loved forever, with Chase. As Hadley and Heath spend time together, he knows he still loves her, but it might take Hadley a bit longer to figure it out.

Resting Beach Face is a fun romantic comedy, that is just a nice enjoyable story. I enjoyed getting to know Hadley and Heath as well as their families. Heath's mother is a hoot, eccentric, fun and caring. Hadley's parents are not so easy to like. Her mother is demanding and has Hadley's life planned out for her, even if it is not what she wants. Hadley wants to open her own dance studio, and I enjoyed how Heath supported and encouraged her and helped her get her business plans together. As Hadley and Heath spent more time together, I enjoyed their fun banter and activities. All does not go smoothly, but things eventually work out. This is a fun second chance romance, friends to lovers and rom-com. I definitely enjoyed it. I liked that the audiobook has two narrators, one male, one female. Esther Wane and Matthew Lloyd Davies give both Hadley and Heather their own voices and drew me into the story. I recommend this book in whichever format works for you.

As always Melanie Summers continues to grab my attention with her sweet love stories. Each addition to this series has been so cute and I love this little island. Hadley’s story was all too relatable. It’s easy to fall into an endless routine, and merely keep things the way they are because it’s convenient. The hard part is when you realize your life isn’t exactly where you want it to be. Especially when you were proud of all the work you’ve done to get where you are. It was lovely seeing her journey as a character as she explored what parts of her life need to change and stood up for which parts were perfect they way they are. ((Pass the tacos!!!))

While it was unfortunate that Hadley had to learn the hard way that Chase wasn’t the best man out there for her, she finds someone much better. It made for a fun read. This book had the perfect balance of humor and sweet moments. Hadley’s sense of humor was so entertaining. Paired along with Minerva, who was such a fun character, they had me cracking up the entire book. It was hard to decide who had the best one-liners.

All in all, I thought this was a cute book. Aside from the ending which made me want to bury myself in a hole.

I’m about to get a liiiiittle spoilery so watch out for that bread truck!

I don’t think I’ve ever been embarrassed for a character at the end. 😂 Thank god there was a HEA, because I nearly had to put the book down after the cringey airport scene. WHICH GOT CAUGHT ON VIDEO. EEK. And then just about sank into myself at that very wild wedding speech. Every time she said another sentence that made the night all about her I screamed a little bit more. Hadley’s brother is a saint. My siblings and I would have thrown hands.

Rating edit: 3.5 stars. (Mainly because of the ending)

All Hadley wants is a happy married life but the thing is, her boyfriend (since high school days) Chase is too busy to plan their future.
Guess what? He's not that busy because he's planning his wedding just not with Hadley. Hadley is devastated.

Heath is a successful accountant in a big company in New York. But his mother's terrible accident compels him to return to the island to look after his mother. Which means facing Hadley, her best friend, after 10 long years. Hadley who broke his heart 10 years ago but guess what Heath's heart still beats for Hadley.

So what happens when they meet again? What about Hadley and Chase relationship? And what about Heath's feelings? You'll have to read the book to know the answers and if you enjoy reading romance, with a touch of humour, you won't be disappointed.

I really like the author's writing style. It's engaging and funny. The characters are interesting. Hadley-Heath bonding is endearing and it's sweet to see them catch up where they left and how they come closer. However, I must admit that Heath is too good to be true (not that I'm complaining). Minerva's character is really cool.

One of the nicest things about this story is that it tells about some really insightful/thought-provoking things about relationships, without being preachy.

Just a couple of problem: there are so many names starting with 'H' that confused me a bit. And the ending: it seemed like a drag. I was expecting something touching and more romantic. And as usual (well, most of the time) epilogue seemed totally unnecessary.

But overall, an entertaining and engrossing read.

~4.5⭐Rating~

After being together for 12 years it's natural that Hadley had assumed her boyfriend would be getting ready to pop the question, little did she know that he has actually being planning a wedding to someone else! With her life all but crushed the last thing Hadley expected was to keep running into her old best friend Heath, who is back in town to help his mum recover after a moped accident. With the two old friends constantly bumping into each other some old feelings begin to resurface while some new flirty feelings start to develop, the question is can these two finally find their way to each other?

••

This book was a laugh fest right from the very first hilarious interaction between Hadley and Heath. Summers has well and truly been killing it with this series and this book has easily taken top spot! I love the easy flow that this novel followed and that the relationship between Hadley and Heath.

••

Hadley was such an amazing female character, but gosh did my heart break for her, what a jerk face of an ex! I loved that both Hadley and Heath were secretly pining for each other all this time and boy once everything falls into place it was epic!

••

One of my favorite things about Summer's books is the laugh out loud factor and this book was jam packed with moments that will have you giggling endlessly! Resting Beach Face was an absolute treat to read, I would highly recommend this fast paced romcom!

Sometimes the right one is worth waiting for, and then fighting for

Resting Beach Face is the fourth book in the PARADISE BAY series and is a great addition to it. This story is well written, funny, sweet, romantic, engaging and just a delicious treat filled with all sorts of yummy goodness. The story is about Hadley and Heath, two best friends who grew up together. Heath had a crush on Hadley for years but she ended up with someone else, who she should have thrown back as he was just wrong in so many ways for her. It is years later and Heath is in NYC and closing in a big deal, one that will make him very rich. But when he gets a call that his mother has been in an accident family comes first so he heads back to Paradise Bay. There he starts to look after his mother and also crosses paths with Hadley again. She is still with the drip which makes things more complicated as Heath's feelings for her resurface, as they never went away but were just locked away in his heart. Will Heath finally be able to show Hadley that he is the man for her or will he lock up his love for her in an airtight safe never to see the light of day again? My money is on Hadley and Heath getting together but there being some bumps, laughs, quirky characters and lots of love in the process.

I received a copy of this book and am leaving my honest review. My opinions are all my own.

✨ The Title/Cover Draw:
I had enjoyed the first 3 books in this series, so when it was available from @netgalley I had to snap it up!

💜 What I liked:
The story takes place on Paradise Bay, same as the other 3. But this time we follow hadley who is the resort’s dance and yoga instructor. We see her in high school and then again 10 years later with some pretty crappy results. But in true Melanie Summer’s fashion, the relationships in this book prevail!

😱 What I didn’t like:
For me this book didn’t have enough of a connection between this book's characters and the characters of the previous books. There was mention of them briefly, but I would have liked to see more of what we have come to love. However it is a solid read to take you to a tropical place.

🚦 My face at the end: 🥰

💭 3 Reasons to Read:
1. Tropical location
2. Dance
3. Seniors on motorcycles

🕧 Mini-Summary:
Hadley has been with her boyfriend for 15 years, putting her dreams on hold and still waiting for a proposal. When she discovers he is not as loyal as she thought, how will she put her life back together?

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Received from Netgalley.
