Kincaid Pack #5

The Enforcer and His Heart

Rate this book
With Keegan's safety on the line, there is nothing Nico won't do to protect him.

The mysterious Keegan has been haunting Nico's dreams.

Ever since the night he stormed through the pack's protections like they were nothing, Nico hasn't been able to forget the powerful young witch. Not his scarred face, his loyalty, or his fierce but sad eyes.

Nico just wished he'd caught Keegan's scent. He ached to know if his fated mate is a witch stuck on the other side of the country.

No one will stop him from finding out.

The Kincaid Pack is trouble.

Everyone knew that, and Keegan's coven forbid contact with them.

But Keegan broke the rules, and now he can't stop dreaming about a shifter he barely caught a glimpse of the night he'd helped the pack. The teasing smile he sees every time he shuts his eyes is becoming a near obsession.

One he isn't sure he wants to stop.

The Enforcer and His Heart is the fifth book in the bestselling Kincaid Pack series, best read in order. This installment features a pack Enforcer who's the epitome of sunshine, a grumpy witch who never planned on being a single parent but would do anything for his child, a three-year-old who thinks wolf snuggles are the best thing ever, inept and allergy-inducing wooing, and a dangerous road trip guaranteed to end in a happily ever after.

This series has had his up and downs in my opinion, but I always keep picking this books up, cause there are gems and you never know.

I really liked this one, the slow burn made it work for me and it was really interesting mixing magic with all of this. As always, the story continues and there were some discoveries that had my jaw hut the floor, it seems is coming to an epic conclusion.

I'm excited. 👁👄👁

4 stars for Keegan, Nico and baby Rosie <3
I really enjoyed their story, and the romance in this.
Unfortunately, the overarching plot of the series seems to be running a little thin and feels needlessy convoluted at times. I can't find it in me to muster up any dread, worry or excitement about what's to come. The prompt for the final book promises an "epic conclusion", but I'm having a hard time putting my faith in that.

The main thing that fell flat for me in the storyline for this book is that there was no satisfying conclusion to Keegan's past and individual character arc. It felt untapped and forgotten, and I felt he was cheated out of any real closure.

I really loved this little family but I felt like they were done dirty by the conflict that's been dragging on throughout this series. Instead of those two things building on each other, they're hindering the flow of the individual book while doing this supposedly epic conflict no favors.

I still love these characters and this series, I just wish it had been planned and executed better :/
or what would have been easier and safer, if it hadn't taken itself too seriously and tried to do too much without the writing to back it up.

While I am enjoying this series and look forward to seeing how it ends, I have mixed feelings about that ending - which was super cliffy. I mean Rick was a total bonehead for doing what he did, to begin with and if he thought it would end in any other way than it did, then I guess he needed the reality check. Kai is going to kill him . You know that saying "boys are dumb"? Yeah. That.

For the rest of the story, Keegan has been through the ringer! His mother was a power grabbing evil woman. I'm glad he found Nico. I thought they were really well suited and I loved Nico's determination to woo his mate. It was so damn sweet.

We also get some progression on the prophecy. Well, prophecies, actually. As is typical with such things, they are super vague. Especially that second one.

I am looking forward to the next book a lot. I need to see some redemption of a certain witch and the triumph of the Kincaid pack over the evils that are coming coming after them.

I skipped book 4 and didn't seem to have missed much. This fifth installment of the series is intense and angsty.

Keegan and Nico are a good pairing. Nico's playful, joyful nature balances out Keegan's suspicious, serious side.

Rosie, their little girl, is adorable and brought much-needed joy to the story.

The book ends on a cliffhanger plot-wise. I have no idea what Rick, the pack alpha, was thinking putting his life on the line with that idiotic non-plan, but wow, what an insanely stupid thing to do.

Thank you to the author for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I’ll be honest, it took me a chapter or two to remember who Nico and Keegan were. 🙈😂 In my defence, I didn’t have time to reread the series before the release of this book and it’s been a while since the last one.

But Kiki is a master at working in events of past novels in a subtle way.

I don’t recommend picking this up if you haven’t read the other books in the series. They have to be read in order for maximum enjoyment and understanding. But whew. WHAT A RIDE! So much happened in this one. From Keegan’s parents, to his past, to Nico, to the council and another coven and…

Can we just talk about that ending?

KIKI THAT LAST CHAPTER GUTTED ME! R u d e. But that chapter on its own got one whole star so 🤌🏻 I love a good cliffy. The relationship between Nico and Keegan is fairly slowburn. I was dying for them to get together but slowburn gives me heartburn so 😂 But all the cameos from the other couples gives me life and ugh. How could I forget how much I love Kai?

Also DAMIEN. I cannot WAIT for his story. And I hope Finlay shows back up 👀

I’m ready for the next book. Lay it on me.

Another single dad bites the dust. I want a romance to be a sweep you off your feet, can’t think about anything else but you, type thing. Like most parent books this one focuses way too much on the kid.

The mother of the kid did not want to be a mom and wanted an abortion but martyred herself to have the kid for Keegan cuz he just wanted to be a dad soooo bad. I am once again begging authors to normalize abortions!

Holy cliffhanger! I adored seeing Keegan and Nico get their happily ever after, they're cute and their road to their mating was a delight. Now, the ending? I'm itching for a resolution. And I'll have to wait until next year for it. Impatiently

This is book 5 of Kiki Clark’s Kincaid Pack series. While each book covers a couple’s/poly’s romantic arc - there’s an ongoing mystery/suspense that weaves through the books. As such, this review may contain spoilers to earlier books.

Whew! Clark has done it again. Unique couples, surprising reveals, and some serious revelations when it comes to why the Kincaid Pack is being targeted by the Council. While Keegan appeared briefly in previous books, he is a bit of a mystery. Nico has always been the fun loving, slightly irreverent enforcer.

These two get a bit of a slow burn as Keegan struggles to protect a secret and himself from his power hungry mother. I love how they finally come together, especially Nico’s wooing to prove this isn’t just fated mates making them the perfect couple.

Lots of twists, turns, and suspense keep the pacing going. United with the pack, Nico & Keegan work to uncover what exactly Gregson’s information means.

While these two get their HFN - the book ends on a huge cliffhanger story wise. I was already craving Doc & Damien’s book, but the events at the end of the book have me as impatient as ever.

Narration:
Kirt Graves! I cannot believe how many unique voices he has in his repertoire. I binged books 1-4 again before listening to this and am just in love with the fact that each main character has a unique voice that’s kept consistent throughout all the audios. Plus, he brings such nuance and depth to all the emotions. Absolute perfection.

Things are heating up in the conflict between the Kincaid Pack, the Council, and whoever is pulling the strings.

- MM Paranormal Romance
- Witch / Werewolf
- Single Dad
- Found Family
- Grumpy / Sunshine

As the Kincaid Pack prepares for battle, Pack Enforcer Nico should be focused on training, but he can’t stop thinking about the beautiful and mysterious witch who appears almost every night in his dreams.

The connection between Keegan & Nico is one of the most fully developed and complex of any couple in the series. Although both know almost immediately that they’re destined for each other, their journey certainly isn’t all rainbows and butterflies.

They have some serious issues to work through, both external and internal, before they have a chance at their happy ever after.

The chemistry is also off the charts and my heart melts a little every time Keegan thinks of Nico as “my wolf” even before they’ve spoken face to face.

This is the fifth book in the Kincaid Pack series (starts with The Alpha and His King). The series has an overarching plot and needs to be read in order although every book focuses on a different main couple.

I can't get enough of this series and I might be a bit obsessed, lol. THE ENFORCER AND HIS HEART was such an emotional read, maybe the most angsty of the whole series. Nico and Keegan's relationship starts out really rocky and it takes a while for them to rebuild their trust. I actually appreciated that even with the fated mates trope, things aren't just immediately fixed and I liked that Nico wanted and needed time to sort out his feelings and deal with his hurt. They have a slow burn of a romance but it was beautiful and so worth the pay off in the end.

While Nico and Keegan are the main couple, there is so much more going on in this book than just their relationship. This story has been building since book 1 and I'm completely invested! I can't say much about the plot because it would spoil a lot of things, so just suffice it to say that secrets are revealed, prophecies deciphered, and it all ends on a massive cliffhanger that will have me biting my nails until the next book comes out.

Story gets exciting

Well! Exciting end to this book. It’s a cliffhanger for sure and the next book will be the end of this series. The very slow burn relationship between Nico and Keegan is almost painful at times as these two fated mates feel like they shouldn’t be together but it’s even more satisfying later on. The romance is balanced out with the overall story of this series which is building up to a grand finale. And grand it’s going to be if the things that are hinted at come true. You definitely need to have read the books in order or you will miss a lot. I am really enjoying this series and recommend it highly.

This was very disappointing. There's no plot progression at all and the romance was very lacking. And that last chapter/weird epilogue? So cliche... You know that Gabriel has the antidote because of Drake so obviously Rick isn't going to die. The whole book was just pointless as fuck. I'll read the last book obviously and hope it gets back to the previous level of writing and plotting. Hopefully the ending makes sense and isn't just thrown together for the sake of it.

Argh, that ending!!!!!

I HATE when the authors allow their characters to do obviously stupid things. Last book, it was that weird thing in Boston... this book, I can't. I just can't.

I love this series, but this particular couple wasn't my favorite. I didn't get their story arc. There was too much pushing away, pushing away... and then boom, they're together.

I ADORED Rosie and her immediate love for her Papa wolfie...

This book started going down an apocalyptic path that isn't my favorite thing either. I feel like some of these urban fantasy series feel like the only way to have tension is to have huge prophesies and world-changing events. That part feels a bit over the top...

But... I enjoyed myself and I WILL be reading the next one. I thought I would take a break but that ending!? Argh, I can't.

Dull in the romance department, but ok in plot

Author did some lazy writing in this one. I could tell she wasn't fully connected to these characters as a romantic couple. Individually they were interesting, however, once she attempted to make us believe there was a spark of something between them it was total dullzville. Frankly, this entire series is rather flat in that department and I believe it's due to the Author being more into the development of the over arcing mysteries and ho-hum world building. Another clue that let's readers know an author isn't connected a couple they are writing is when they decide to dedicate an entire chapter or more to side characters or previous ones from other books like this one did. Yes, it was done as a way to add suspense and get readers to comeback but seems like to me since she is into giving bonus material then that chapter could have been one of them instead of putting a scene of the current coupe in one.

Okay...will I finish this series? Well if I remember to look for the last book, maybe.
It just isn't good enough for me to want to pre-order.

This one is a dud for me

The main characters in the romance of this book annoyed the crap out of me. Keegan did the best he could for his daughter while under some extreme circumstances in which he can’t trust anyone. A situation that he grew up in. Nico acts as if Keegan should have known that he could trust him while never having lived in the circumstances that Keegan has. Nico’s unjustified umbrage and Keegan’s guilt laced inner monologue made me almost stop reading the book. I think this was bad writing. I find it hard to believe the conflict between the love interests would naturally play out that way. And it wasn’t fun or entertaining to read it. I’m so glad the next book the series is the last one because this entry marred the whole series for me and has wore out the series welcome. It was just that bad.

Grade D. So disappointing. Important events happen off page, the romance was weak, tons of inner dialogue, poor characterization for Keegan (so much left unsaid or unresolved), overall story arc is stretched to its limit, and an ending with a dumb cliffhanger. I liked Rosie and Nic.

Y'all I am obsessed with this series!

This installment was a slower burn, with pining, and dream walking, and a lot more suspense. I've been so curious about Keegan since we met him. He took some time to warm up but when he finally did I fell in love. He's so sweet, and will do quite literally anything to protect his people.

I think the love story kind was almost secondary to the continuing story line of the series. I usually cannot stand when that happens. It worked for me here as Nico and Keegan were still at the forefront of that story as well.

If you've been keeping up with this series and don't do cliffhangers. Maybe sit this one out and read it before the last book releases. There is a massive cliffhanger. I tossed my kindle after reading the last page.

Keegan and Nico's romance may have started out full of longing and missed connections, but by the end these lovers were as sweet and affectionate as any newly mated couple. Keegan was one giant question mark to me at the beginning of this book, so getting to unlock his secrets and connect with him as a character was equal parts captivating and delightful. After so many threats and attacks on the Kincaid pack I was expecting this story to continue on in the same vein, but that's not at all what Nico and Keegan had in store for me. Instead their journey was a refreshing step back from the chaos that allowed me to understand a different coven's problems and finally get some answers about who may have been pulling the strings the whole time and why. Don't get me wrong--this book had the same sense of urgency as the others in this series, the same connected plotlines, mysterious prophecies, and pack bonds, but less of the frantic frenzy that the pack experienced when they didn't know anything about who was targeting them. This time, Nico and Keegan knew exactly who and what they were up against, and it gave their actions new purpose to protect their loved ones no matter what the cost. I understand why they felt they were being pulled in opposite directions at the start of this book, but it still broke my heart to see how much they struggled to trust in their mate connection. Both Nico and Keegan had some growing to do before they were ready to be together for real, and I'm glad I got to experience it because it made their slow burn all the more satisfying. As much as I love the idea of fated mates, I loved knowing that Nico and Keegan consciously chose to be together even more. The two of them built a wonderful emotional connection before going beyond a few steamy kisses, and there was no doubt in my mind that every part of Keegan and Nico were committed and in love before exchanging mating bites. Just when I thought this book might come to a peaceful ending all on its own, Rick and Gabriel set my heart pounding with the uncertain aftermath of a very risky meetup and now I'm absolutely desperate to know what happens next!

**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.

Ummmm... what? Ok, I was spoiled with the previous books in this series because they were all already published by the time I started it, and I read them back to back. In contrast, it's been a hot minute (as in... months) since I was "in" this world, and while the general storyline and the players in it did come back to me as I read, I wasn't really immersed in it to start out with so the way this just... picks up as not really a standalone was a little jarring. But setting that aside and also setting aside this trend in omegaverse/shifter stories to do series with an overarching plot such that the books really *aren't* standalones, even if they each have a singular discreet romance to focus on per book with a different couple/throuple - a trend that I admit is pretty fun when you've got the whole series to read but is a thousand percent NOT satisfying when you're stuck in the middle with months, or more between releases - I didn't love this. It's probably a 3.5 star for me at best, and I say that just for the Nico/Keegan plot, disregarding the other series issues above. I also didn't hate it, and definitely *did* enjoy parts of it, but... yeah. It's one of those that if it HAD been a standalone romance, it definitely would have felt lacking IMHO. And maybe that is symptomatic of having the overarching series plot to attend to. The author understandably had to spend a significant amount of time on that, and weave it into the main couple's romance, but the build of that romance and the feelings between them suffered for it IMHO.

Oh well. I'll still read the last book in the series when it comes out, but there are a couple other series (by different authors) currently in progress that I'm deliberately waiting on starting until they're complete, and I think from here on out, that's going to be my standard plan with this sub-genre.

Wow... that cliffhanger ... I need the next book like an hour ago...

I enjoyed Keegan and Nico's story. The tension around the Kincaid Pack and what is coming for them keeps getting closer.

Keegan and Nico meet with a glance and then are pulled apart by familial duties, circumstances, and other obligations. Keegan then visits Nico in his dreams as a dream walker. But then Keegan makes decisions based on assumptions and he has to figure out how to open up to Nico in order to be the mate he deserves.

Dark forces are closing in on the Kincaid pack and time is running out. I really liked this addition to the series and I seriously loved that Keegan's sister and I have the same name (it's small, but when you have a semi unique name, it's awesome to see it in print!) Gabe, Jamie, and Drake are still my fave though!!

I received an ARC and leave this review voluntarily.

Complaining that the next book in the series isn't due until May 23, 2003 is tacky. And ungrateful. So I will not say a word about having to wait nearly 11 months for it. Not. One. Word.
Except to say that I preordered it, already. Of course.
This book was WOW. Fast paced. Absorbing. And surprisingly enough, I did not sneak ahead to the end. After I read the spoiler in the FB comments post. I read right up to it even knowing there was that dirty word at book's end. Cliffhanger.
Bleh.
I've enjoyed every couple, every book. I know that Kiki Clark will do right by her characters. Kai isn't gonna be left alone. And maybe Damian, Tash and Jess will get mates. The bad guys will be taken down.
Just have a bit of a wait.

Nico and Keegan ❤️ The slow burn really worked with this one. And Rosie was too precious 😭
This had a great mix of angst, humour, snark, stubborn men... And then you reach the last couple chapters and shit is going down. Honestly I forgot all about the romance at that point because THAT'S SOME CLIFFHANGER.
