Written like a graphic novel, Down in the Dumps: Trash vs. Trucks is a short & fun read for readers that are ready for chapter books. The font makes it easy for young readers to distinguish between words.
I'm not a fan of the greyscale illustrations, as it makes the pages dull.
I have mixed feelings about the plot. On the one hand, I feel like its encouraging children to be disobedient when faced with something new, such as moving... I may be reading more into it that a child would be though. On the other hand, I love how the author threw in the importance of NOT littering.
I love the achievement acknowledgement after select chapters, or word count. My child really enjoyed being able to see how much he was reading - this is great for reading challenges/read-a-thons.

When the friendly garbage learns their dump is being moved to a barge to clear space for a parking lot, they band together to fight back.

Black and white graphic novel style. Told through comic speech bubbles with narrative sentences sprinkled throughout. Not my fav of the Harper Chapters but a solid addition.

The Westerfield Waste Transfer and Recycling Center is home to Nana and her two best friends, Ms. Kettle and Moreland. When Nana discovers that the center is going to be cleared and turned into a parking lot, and all the trash will be moved to a barge, she takes steps to save her home. Nana and her friends decide to hold a Trashtacular to save the center.

As with book #1...
I like the beginner reader encouragement of the chapter / word tracker and the celebratory total chapters and words at the end. I think the book would have been even better if it were in full color; I'm guessing that was a publisher decision to save costs, because it seems like it was written to be in full color.
