❝Elliot?❞ . . . ❝I’m a very stubborn guy. Think of me like an oak, roots deep in the ground. Immoveable. When I make my mind up about something, I see it through. And my mind was made up last night. I want—❞
❝To get to know me,❞ Elliot finished for him, hands on hips, frowning.
❝Yes, but more than that.❞
❝You want to be my friend.❞
❝More than that.❞
❝My best friend?❞
Wentworth shook his head. Elliot froze and whispered, ❝My boyfriend?❞
. . . ❝I want to be your husband.❞

I - I think I need a moment, because wow. The disappointment is real. When I tell you guys Persuasion is my low-key favorite Jane Austen novel, well… sometimesievenlikeitbetterthanprideandprejudice.

There's something so… heartbreakingly romantic about Captain Wentworth and Anne Elliot's love. I mean the scene of her reading his letter and then running after him? asalhfaklslkjlshf, i cannot 😭

If PERSUASION has taught me anything, it's this; never underestimate the power of a handwritten letter baring your whole entire soul.

Now, all of this is to say, my expectations for this book were sky high. I went in expecting something akin to Perfect Day, another PERSUASION retelling. Instead, I got something a lot more similar to the hot mess that is, Bennet, Pride Before the Fall. Which, fun fact, happens to be the third book in this series.

“I could have reached out too.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“You’re a famous musician. Living the dream. I wasn’t even sure you’d remember me.”
“Remember? Elliot, all I am is memories.”

Here I am again reviewing another story from this cute series. And just in the right moment for me, since this couple of weeks I’ve been wanting to read short books. Unlike Finley Embraces Heart & Home here the school years are summarized in the first chapters and then it jumps straight to their adulthood. Which made me enjoy this book even more. Until now, I’d say this installment is the angstiest of the series by far.

description

Elliot and Wentworth’s first year of relationship was so lovely to read. The calm before all the hurt that came next after some hard decisions that changed everything. Second chance is a trope that little by little is starting to catch my attention. And since this book doesn't have many pages, although the angst was definitely there it didn’t feel like an eternity til they were putting all their feelings out there. Also, I liked the fact that even though Wentworth was angry and hurt he wasn’t petty.

description

A man seeking forgiveness. Another man with his heart broken. Teenage love. Second chances. Breakup songs. A cute puppy. A great addition to this series of retellings.

Elliot and Wenworth fall in love in high school. They have plans for a future together. Right after high school Elliot's mom reveals her illness. Elliot not wanting to hold Wentworth back breaks up with him to care for his mom .

15 years later after the heartbreak they are brought together by a work project. They are two different people but one thing has remained the same under all the hurt love still lives.

Overall, I really liked it. I did -1 star because I hate abrupt endings with no epilogue. The story doesn't feel complete without it.

I started this book feeling like a clown. I thought the first two in this series were good adaptations, but the second two were disasters. Persuasion is my favorite Austen book, and I truly believed Anyta was going to gut it like she did my second favorite, Mansfield Park. I read it because I'm too stubborn for my own book and can't leave things halfway through.
I'm glad to say, this one holds in quality with the first two. It has a backstory of why Elliot and Wentworth broke up, separate to being persuaded by others, which is laid down with more detail than in the original. As far as the social commentary, while a big part is gone, the book still deals with the part of self persuasion and pride.
As far as the characters, there's a lot more direct interaction between Elliot and Wentworth than there was between Anne and Frederick. That's not to say it didn't hold similar to the messages that went across in the original, but that the messages went through without an intermediary. This means we're getting a conversation instead of The Letter, but the message and feelings come across. The angst was truly there, and I enjoyed that. Most of the pining in Finley had been eliminated and that had hurt the core of the original. Had it happened here, it would've gutted the heart of the story.
Overall, it was a solid adaptation. We're still missing the sense and sensibility book, which could be either a good book or a trainwreck based on previous experience. I'm still shocked at how hit and miss the books have been. I'm just glad my favorite wasn't one of the casualties

I hadn't planned on reading any more of this series after a poor showing in the first book and generally just not super connecting with Sunday's recent releases. But this one was on sale, and I'm a sucker for a free book...

It was perfectly fine, I even enjoyed it, but I definitely didn't absolutely love it. The banter got a bit exhausting and all the talking about something random in detail as a metaphor for their relationship was a little annoying with how frequently it happened. I found the pacing a bit odd here--and this was also an issue I remember having in the first book, how it would seem like the characters are CLEARLY flirting/on the same page, but then in the next chapter Elliot's convinced Wentworth's in love with somebody else, which just... didn't quite make sense. Sunday loves her oblivious characters, but it gets to a point way past credulity. I also found Wentworth's ~teenage~ self in particular to be a bit odd. The whole high school love story was super insta-love, which was sort of a theme throughout the book, which just isn't my jam.

I *did* like the characters and the story itself was enjoyable overall, but it did remind me why Sunday's no longer an auto-buy for me.

Longer review to come but I stayed up most of the night to read this book. I’m just blown away. 🥹🥹🥹😭😭😭😍😍😍

——-

I have in the past had trouble with Anyta Sunday’s writing style. I didn’t hate it, but she certainly wasn’t my go-to author. However, in this book imo she is in superb form. I will add a caveat to this review that I have not read the original Persuasion by Austen. I did watch the ITV movie adaptation somewhat recently and was really curious about this version. Second chance romance is one of my favorite tropes and it is really hard/tricky to get right.

Having said all that, Elliott and Wentworth (the 2 MC’s in the story) stole my heart right from page 1. I usually find love at first sight tropes extremely cringey but this was so exceptionally well done here. The chemistry, banter and relationship growth between the 2 MC’s was so good.

As part 1 came to a close, you just knew what was coming (foreshadowing mom’s illness) and I cried for both Elliott and Wentworth. 😭😭😭

“I hope I never know what a last kiss with you looks like. But if we have to have one, we’ll be old and crotchety, arthritic perhaps, and we’ll be careful touching one another. The softest kiss will be the kindest.” Oh dear Wentworth! ❤️❤️❤️

Part 2 is set 15 years later. The story of how they find their way back to each other is beautiful.

“Da che tornasti, ahi misera. Miserable me, since you returned.”💔💔💔

Wentworth secretly caring about Elliott, Elliott pining for him, the dog Honey, supporting characters including Louisa and Dr.B, the Bumblebee breakup song are some of the things I want to highlight. There are so many snippets that I loved here that I could not possibly include them all.

I laughed, I cried, I swooned. 😭😍 I loved it so much I stayed up until 1 AM to finish the book.

“How do you stop loving the person who first stole your soul? You don’t. You can’t.”

This is the one that I've looked forward to the most since I'd heard that Anyta Sunday was doing gay reworkings of Austen's work.
Persuasion is one of my favourite books, ever, and here it is updated beautifully with all the best parts included.
There's the heartbreak and embarrassment of being reunited but not forgiven. The ways that they are often thrown together uncomfortably but care is still shown.
Wentworth and Elliot made me laugh and cry and I could talk about this book all day.
It is one of those books that I would gladly re-read over and over again

This is probably the better of the romances, even if the beginning is far from what I would've expected from a PERSUASION retelling origin story. But I really liked these two characters together and I actually thought the reason for their break-up was well done; I'm glad Sunday didn't keep that conflict/catalyst from the source material. I also liked how she modernized Wentworth's career aspirations and success.

I didn't love much of the secondary characters (no surprise here) but, unlike many of these books, this time I wasn't cringe-reading or skimming the sex scenes. So, all around, there was much improvement in this one. Even if seeing Austen's incredible words jammed into the dialogue here inspired a wince or two.

One more to go!

Bisexual Persuasion: Feat Prequel.

"When you have the love of your life, you hold on tight. You don’t let go."

Did you ever want a prequel to Persuasion, to know what it was that Anne and Wentworth had that was so special that they never moved on?

I did.

And I also love MM stories, so nothing could please me more than this MM "Persuasion" adaption.

So why not 5 stars? I wish I knew. I think there was just a general air of people acting incongruent or something.

I Kindle highlighted a description of a cock being "gently plumped", which made me laugh. Such an unexpected change from all the raging veiny iron rods I am used to reading about.

Ah, the agony. The hope...

"I hope I never know what a last kiss with you looks like."

I really love what Anyta has done with this entire series, and her version of Persuasion is no exception. To stay so true to the original while at the same time making it new and her own is really quite something, and I loved watching Elliot and Wentworth work their way towards a second chance. But my favorite part has to be that we get to see them before. It adds so much more longing and pure emotion to it when you see how and why it all ended.

I really enjoyed this as a second chance romance, and all the feelings, the longing, the frustration, the hope and agony where beautifully done.

"“He has no idea how hard the fall was.” Wentworth’s chest rose and fell and his lips pressed hard together. “Maybe it wouldn’t have felt so hard if you’d let him fall with you.”.

There's something I hate about the lacking of communication and honest. They separate people, broke them apart, and caused chaos, especially in relationship. Any relationship.
But Wentworth and Elliot were both seventeen when they first met and and falling in love.
Elliot had his own baggage, and his unspoken love for Wentworth drove him away from the guy he love. At eighteen, they had to say goodbye without knowing that at those very moment, they're actually can solved the problem. But hey, teenagers :)

Fifteen years later, both had to work together at the same room, and the obvious appeared.
I think Wentworth had every rights to get upset and make Elliot believe he's over him.
Which actually not.
The slow burn killed me, but I knew what I'll get from Anyta, so I expected this frustratingly very slow burn romance.

"Wentworth dropped his hand slowly.
“I would have done anything for you. What you never understood was”—he swallowed—“then. Back then, I would have gladly died for you.”
Elliot wanted to say something, acknowledge that, but his mouth was dry. “You were here with her alone, grieving, while I was drowning in self-pity, making sure the world knew it.”

Elliot, Song of the Soulmate is a beautiful love song of an requited second chance love for two boys that grew apart, and finding each other again, because, you could never say no to your soul-mate. It will find the way to you, no matter what.

I enjoyed every word and cry and laugh with Elliot and Wentworth.
I enjoyed the whole series so far and I hope I could also enjoying the last book. Can't wait!

This series is just *chef's kiss*. Hats of to Anyta for another hit! Not my favorite of the series, but still completely engrossing with such absolutely wonderful characters and such a sweet story. I was a little worried in the beginning, 1. for the awful scottish accent (this goes away quickly, do not worry) and 2. because Anyta is the queen of the slow burn and the characters were together right away! (I will again reiterate that I have never read a Jane Austen book so everything is a complete surprise for me). However, Anyta was able to make it so we still got that delicious slow burn with a dash of heartache and a forever kind of pining. Sweet and lovely, and just another complete win from this series.

Not to be dramatic but this series hasn’t been very pleasant. The storylines never lived up to what I hoped (especially for retellings), the romances were pretty lackluster and the side characters drove me nuts. But there was light at the end of this dismal tunnel and that light was ELLIOT, SONG OF THE SOULMATE.

This book was what introduced me to the Love, Austen series. I was so excited about a Persuasion retelling. But I had to start at the beginning of the series and I almost gave up before getting to this one but thankfully my buddy read partner stuck it out with me and I’m so happy we did.

To put it simple, I adored this book. Elliot and Wentworth were the heroes I’ve been wanting. They were genuine, sweet, smitten and just amazing. I was worried about what conflict would keep them separated those 15 years but felt it worked for this story even though it was sad. Their connection was felt from the start and when reunited I could feel their pain and anger. But I could also see how much they still loved each other. I was a swooning fool for these guys and their little moments; Wentworth feeding Elliot (even if he acted like he hated him), getting jealous when someone pays attention to the other and an adorable pup bringing them together. *sigh* I just loved it all.

This book wasn’t perfect but for once I’m going to just focus on the good and enjoy a winner out of the five books I’ve read. I have one more to go and I’m hoping the good luck holds and it ends on a high note. 4 Stars!

As it turns out, my prediction (which I put in one of my updates) was right: I did love this one better than all the previous installments in this series. At this point, I'm not even surprised.
Anyta is a genius and I've stopped questioning her magic long ago.

This was a wonderful story, truly (and you should really take it from me, because I can be very picky).
When it comes to Anyta, there's slowburn, there's torture... And then there was this one. She really outdid herself with this story. And I'm 100% here for it.
(Let's all pray for the S&S retelling, because not only it's the one Austen work I actually liked, but after this one, it has its work cut out for it lololol jk I trust Anyta to blow me away).

My favourite in the series so far!
It started out very intensely, with a long intro that set up the second-chance-romance in much detail. I liked this a lot as it gave much more intimate context for the ten years later, when the brunt of the story takes place.

The tone overall once again was very light, with some serious notes beneath, giving the reader an overall light and happy feeling but also tugging at one's heartstrings every now and again.

I liked Wentworth and Elliot's dynamic, and the backdrop of them both working at the indie movie studio from books 1 and 2. Wentworth being a popstar was more of a small detail, which I enjoyed more than if it had been the main plot thing.
The addition of an adorable puppy, complete with pet responsibility subplot, was excellent.

The one thing I didn't like were the couple things that were clearly meant to be jealousy inducing in a "will-they-won't-they" way. Not saying it would be unrealistic, but it made me feel bad for some of the side characters.

I received an ARC and reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Elliot froze and whispered, “My boyfriend?”

Wentworth paused, and again shook his head. Elliot wrung out a relieved breath. Electricity shot around his body at the mere thought of being Wentworth’s boyfriend. Unbearable.

Yes, unbearable. But . . . Also thrilling?

Wentworth met Elliot’s eye. “I want to be your husband.”

Unimaginative, uninspired, with a horrible Scottish accent to top it all. Love, Austen? Should be Leave Austen out of it.

Anyta Sunday's Love Austen series has yet to let me down and the latest installment furthers this record. This is a sweet, second chance love story that tells the story of how two men met and fell in love not once but twice.

Elliot, Song of the Soulmate tells the love story of Elliot and Wentworth. They meet as teenagers and on the first night, Wentworth declares that he wants to be Elliot's husband. They fall in love and start to plan their future until Elliot's world is turned upside down. He breaks his own heart and lets Wentworth go off to chase his dreams. Fifteen years later, they are reunited when Wentworth comes to work at the Love Austen studios where Elliot is currently working. At first, the reunion is not so welcome but they slowly begin to learn who each man has grown into and if they can make it work.

As always, Anyta writes these amazingly real characters that you can't help but relate to. I found myself cheering for both Elliot and Wentworth at different parts in the narrative, falling in love as they fell in love, and hurting when they hurt. The found family aspect of the Love Austen studios appealed to me greatly as well, setting a backdrop of familiar characters from the other stories. And a lot of characters from the previous books appear in this one, weaving in and out masterfully, taking up enough space to make someone whose read the series happy but not so much that someone who just picks up this book as a standalone will find themselves lost.

And the chemistry between the two main characters is palpable from the jump. The relationship felt believable. The friendships that supported the story felt believable. For me, being able to connect with the characters in a book is one of the most important things, followed by plot and quality of the writing. Anyta Sunday once again excels in all three areas.

This is an easy read with a low level of angst and a romance that leaves you smiling.

5/5⭐

This book was one of the best second chance romances I have read in a while. The novel was full of teenage angst that morphed into adult anger and hurt. Their story was so utterly sweet and equally heartbreaking. I found myself aching for the men and wishing that their paths did not have to separate. This can be a stand-alone, but do yourself a favor, and indulge in the entire Love, Austen series.
I loved these men equally, in their youth and in the present day. Wentworth and Elliot’s first encounter was beyond adorable, and the two instantly bonded. A tragic event causes them to separate, and Elliot never regretted his choice done out of love.
Their reunion fifteen years later shows a very cold and disinterested Wentworth. Elliott has never stopped pining for him, and I wanted nothing more than the two to rekindle their joyful and intense connection.
Ms. Sunday is a master of slow-burn romances, and this was one of utter perfection. She never rushes her MCS along, which makes the story feel so realistic, and the development of the characters so deep.
The story had a solid emotional core that made me read it in one sitting. I found myself crying at times about life’s unfairness. I strongly recommend this gentle and swoon-worthy book. I know I will reread this, and I can’t wait for more of Ms. Sunday’s take on Jane Austen’s books.
An added bonus for this series is the beautiful drawings that capture the emotions of her novels. Happy reading.

The Love, Austen series continues to surprise me. Each book is unique enough to hold a special place in my romantic heart because it touches on a different relationship or romance trope. Despite each couple's unique story, they all share that smooth and easy rhythm that makes them such a pleasure to read.

I wasn't quite sure how Elliot, Song of the Soulmate would work at first as the heroes start together as high school sweethearts. I shouldn't have been worried, though, because the importance of their start, eventual separation, and their rekindling would all be realized soon enough. Elliot and Wentworth's second chance romance was a sweet read, with plenty of beautiful touches and memorable moments that melted my heart.

I quite enjoyed the journey in Elliot, Song of the Soulmate. Although some of the separation and characters' reluctance to address their hurts and concerns felt drawn out at moments, the story never felt overly dramatic or angst-ridden. I loved how Elliot and Wentworth's connection is apparent even when they weren't sure if a happily-ever-after was still in the cards for them. Elliot, Song of the Soulmate is perfect for fans of second chance romances or fated romances, particularly if you love a good slow burn.

The truth of love is in its adaptability, in its ability to weather all storms.
.
My Rating : 4/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟
.
I loved Elliot's character so much! He was confident and had his way with words and situations. The contrast his character gets when he finds love is interesting to read about!! Went was such a great character and honestly he deserved better than Elliot. Buuttt Elliot realizes he's an idiot and makes amends. And Omg I loved the ending!! It was definitely a bit different in its characterization and dialogue, but I absolutely loved this book as well !

“Are you okay?” Wentworth asked. “It’s odd. It feels like I’m falling and can’t stop.”
.
“Let’s make a rule.” Wentworth rolled onto his side and propped himself on his elbow. “What kind of rule?” “The kind we follow and don’t break.” “What is the purpose of this rule?” “To discourage distorted expectations.” “Why do I have a feeling I won’t love this?” Probably because he wouldn’t. “Rules are meant to be respected, not loved.” Wentworth grumbled. “You’ll make an excellent Head Boy next year.”

4.25 Stars!

This was such a lovely second-chances story based on Persuasion by Jane Austen, which happens to be one of my favorites, so I simply had to sign up for it.

I really liked that we got to see the past and see how Elliot and Wentworth met and fell in love when they were 17 and what broke them off, before moving to the present where they met again. I don't like flashbacks, so having the story break into two parts, past and present, was perfect for me.

Elliot was a sweetheart and my heart went out to him for the difficult choice he had to make at one point. And Wentworth, well, I could understand why he acted the way he acted with Elliot when they saw again, and yet, angry and hurt as he was, he was unable to stop himself from showing Elliot with small gestures that he still cared for him. They were really sweet together.

The story was a sweet slow-burn, with some angst and great characters, including Honey, the puppy, who was all kinds of adorbs! Recommendable!

“Remember? Elliot, all I am is memories.”

This book was chock full of tense but sweet moments between the two main characters. Elliot has loved Wentworth for years. When he chased the other man off after his mother confessed how sick she was, Elliot broke both of their hearts. Wentworth went on to have a musical career while Elliot never left home. Now he’s come back home and Elliot isn’t sure what to think. One moment he thinks Wentworth hates him, the next he wonders if there might be a chance of forgiveness. This book almost broke my heart! Tissues were needed. It’s a beautiful story. This second chance has magic written all through it..and an adorable doggo.

This is a great love at first sight, second chance romance. I went in blind, so when things were going so great early on, I should have known it was too easy. Both of these men are so caring, with such tender hearts, and a love that lasted years, with a lingering of pain and loss to go with it. I've loved this whole series. I love the illustrations, I love the cheeky dialogue and innuendos, and most of all I love the characters. We get to see bits of other couples in here, and the end was so sweet.
