"When I first encountered the work of Margot Zemach -- specifically the drawings for "Duffy and the A Cornish Tale" -- I marveled at the vibrant combination of line and color that was redolent of the 18th-century caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson. Zemach's art also reverberates with the work of such American contemporaries as Maurice Sendak and William Steig, and the fluctuating line weight of her pencil recalls the draftsmanship of Howard Pyle at his most energetic. Throughout, Zemach's art is informed by an irrepressible wit. Like many before and after them, Margot and her husband Harve inspired one of their children -- Kaethe -- to pursue the profession. As Kaethe recalls, she grew up surrounded by her parents' work, and their commitment to the highest standards of writing and illustrating for children was embedded in her. So, I am especially delighted that the Eric Carle Museum is presenting its first generational exhibition, and it will be the first of many."

About the author

Margot Zemach was an American illustrator and author of children's books. Many were adaptations of folk tales from around the world - mostly Yiddish and other Eastern European stories. Zemach won the 1974 Caldecott Medal for her illustrations of the picture book "Duffy and the Devil", which was written by her husband.
