Camryn is dying for some action, and she just might. While concerned about her long-lost father’s return to the periphery of her life, Cam is struggling to find her place in this new world. Her days have become more routine than she’d hoped, and she’s no closer to the answers she seeks. Flip side, she gets to swing punches and practice magic with the all too alluring empath Leon. Her drab existence is abruptly disturbed when a coven goes missing. Placing her personal struggles on the back burner, Leon and Cam investigate. She starts doubting everyone around her, and it’s becoming increasingly difficult knowing whom to trust. Part of her wants to confide in Leon, but when his past comes knocking, she can’t even do that. In the end, the only one she can trust is herself. She wanted action, but now more lives are at stake. Including her own.

Camryn and the crew are back!! I really enjoyed this book! Trying to navigate the magical world, learn how to use your magic and keep people safe is challenging. Especially when you finally get a mentor and then part of your mentor's coven goes missing and is part of a heinous crime. This book has all the elements of perseverance - someone potentially losing their mind (asking questions and not getting full answers) but still being a good person and trying to come out on top. Camryn is always ending up in the middle of something she did not intend to be in. Is it wrong place at the wrong time or the right place at the right time?

This is a good read - especially if you're looking to escape this crazy world we call life in 2022! Now....moving on to some spoilers!!

**SPOLER ALERT**

Who else read the part about Stefan and thought "hmm...that's interesting". Every time he popped up I just KNEW he was deceptive. He was a good plot twist and a feasible way of bring some closure to his relationship with Camryn. Although, I feel like he'll be back in a future book attempting to wreak more havoc on the world. Even with Stefan and Camryn coming to an end...I'm really happy that Camryn didn't jump into anything with Leon. The slow burn romance brewing is part time swoon but begs the question - Will they or won't they? I think this will come to a head in book 3 (fingers crossed).

I also want to know more about her father? Why does this man keep operating from the shadows? I was disappointed after finding out in book 1 that he was at Edwin's funeral but didn't introduce himself. Why does it seem like people know more about him, either from witnessing something or a rumor they may have heard - but no one is saying anything? How cryptic....it's not deterring me though...I want to see what happens in book 3!!

Worldbuilding:
This instalment takes place about 3 months after the end of book 1. While Cam is learning, there is still so much she doesn't know... yet. This book gave us a lot more info about the power structure in Berlin and the greater whole. As we did with the first book, we learn alongside Cam, we know what she knows, and that is (in my honest opinion) an excellent way to get all the information across without dumping everything on the reader at once.

Character development:
Cam isn't protecting Petra anymore but is now, together with Leon, working for the head of the clan, Saga. As I've said before, there is still Cam doesn't know about or still has to learn, which is difficult as she is the last shield anyone knows about, and as such, there isn't really anyone who can teach her :( That doesn't mean she's left all by herself. Saga arranges a mentor for her, Babette.
Cam has a difficult time in this instalment. Not only is she trying to find time for Stefan (her human boyfriend), but there is also Leon, our lovely empath and Noelle, his daughter.
Not gonna spoil anything, but I knew it! I freaking knew it!

Pacing and flow:
This was really good, smooth from start to finish. It had a lot of action but still managed a great balance with all the conversations, keeping a nice rhythm throughout.

The book:
The book was well written with no (noticeable) errors. There is no sex described (if that is important to you).
It has 340 pages, spread over 31 chapters and told from Cam's point of view.

Final thoughts:
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book, and all in all, I think this is turning out to be an amazing series! Of course, there were some twists and turns, but the story is advancing nicely. I'm looking forward to the next instalment!

Good

WARNING! Cliffhanger. This is about a 3/5 on my trauma scale, which means you’re not left wondering who lived, or feeling like you need to know what’s next RIGHT NOW; but instead you are left feeling uncertain as to where it will all lead. It’s actually quite a clever one- just enough hook to make you want to read the next book ASAP.

Now she knows what she is, Cam has to learn how to control her magic. As a shield, there are very few who can do what she does, and since the only one Cam knows is her absent father, the Berlin witch leader assigns Cam a mentor from a different branch of the craft.
Meanwhile, there appears to be a group hunting witches in town, while the Berlin leaders begin to play politics amongst themselves.

There’s a lot happening in this story, and it makes for an intense book.
There are a number of emotional events, which leaves Cam in a state of upheaval as she experiences the darker side of the veiled world, and it catches her off guard on a number of occasions.
By the end of the book, she has been through the wringer, but she is left knowing there are only a few people she can trust, and it’s fairly clear who they are.

Eagled eyed readers will not be too surprised by revelations in the book, though I had to admit that some of those I found rather horrifying, and I’m a little surprised that Cam hasn’t mentioned some of them.
It’s definitely darker than the first book, but just as engrossing. This one I’m only going to recommend to urban fantasy fans that enjoy their tales with a darker, suspenseful note, but those who do will enjoy it.

WOW! This book was even better than book I! I completely fell into it, reading it in one go! The plot is superb, the characters grow with the progression of the storyline, which is great, no stagnant characters here! The slow burn between Camryn and Leon is beautiful, but will they act on it? I love the mix of witches, werecats, wolves, vampires and even witch hunters! It's a great paced book, becoming more and more exciting the further one reads. I absolutely love Rosemund and Saga, both fierce and protective of their "people" but at the same time, their compassion and humanity shines through. What I do enjoy, is not being able to predict what's next and though I had an inkling of the direction, I couldn't predict. I feel for Camryn,as she's trying to get a handle on her magic, the rug is constantly being pulled out from under her, which makes the entire experience more thrilling! And the fact that the characters are fallible, get hurt and seriously injured, adds a layer of credibility. The mystery as to who and why is targeting the paranormal is yet to unravel fully, which is a sure way to look forward to the final book in the series with baited breath! Really a terrific read!

Cam's boring life has perhaps a bit more excitement than she wanted now! There is drama and danger in her personal life and that of the coven she has joined as secrets continue to be revealed. This book got dark and violent, uncomfortable in parts and the author did not take the easy way out. There is a lot of action in this book, but it is primarily character driven rather than plot driven.

That said, I really like the characters in this book and want to spend more time with them. Many times I find characters annoying but they work in the story and it is a good story, so you go with it. These characters I like. The whole clan/family rambling and mixed up as they are is memorable and you really feel for them with both the little things and the major tragedy they get dragged through in this book.

Book 2 in the Veiled World Chronicles, a European based urban fantasy that centers near Berlin. Each book contain a complete plot, but book 2 builds off of the huge reveals and relationships that started in book 1 and ends in another huge reveal for book 3. Highly recommended to be read in order.

Trigger warning for violence, death, torture, and burning people alive.

I enjoyed this book, but it is definitely not a standalone. Unfortunately for me, I didn't see that this was book 2, so I felt lost in the beginning. I missed the background for all the characters, explanations of the different magics, relationships between races, kinds of supernatural beings, etc. and more. I am assuming at least some of these areas are explained in the first book. I did enjoy the story arc in this book, in spite of the gaps in my knowledge, but you definitely need to read book 1 first. I will be going in search of that one now. But, if you have read the first book, you will want to read/listen to this one. There is a lot of action, heart-pounding suspense, secrets, danger, and a surprise at the end (kind of mini-cliffhanger). I loved Camryn and her sass and spunk. The other characters are intriguing as well. I look forward to more in the story.

The narration is good, and all the characters had distinct voices that really seemed to match their personalities.

I received a free review copy and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

When Cam stumbles upon the scene of murder, her boredom take an abrupt turn when she finds out the victims are people she knew. While she and Leon investigate, everyone else has let their guard down, but Cam has a feeling that it isn't over, yet. To top it all off she has to wonder about where her father might be, and whether or not she can trust anyone in her life.
I just love Cam, she's kick butt, smart, and absolutely fascinating. All of these characters are well written, unique, and each have a distinct personality which makes them pivotal to this story. Plenty of action, suspense, magic, and unexpected as well as surprising twists that kept me riveted from the first page. I think this is a must-read book, and I'm looking forward to the next in this series.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

Camryn is back in full action and raring to go in the second book of the series. Following on a little while after the ending of book 1, things suddenly get a little more than crazy (something Cam has been craving for a while - a step away from the boring mundane everyday life she's been stuck in).

The slow burn, will they-wont they between Camryn and Leon heats up a notch, the devastation of an entire missing coven, ghosts from the past, the mix of witches, were-cats, vampires and wolves as well as some witch hunters thrown in, all make for a fast paced, page turner that literally has you on the edge of your seat.

The Rivers pair really know how to create believable characters that are real enough to jump out of the book, characters that grow and thrive in environments that (i) would love to be a part of.

Can't wait to see what happens next!!

This book is even better than the first.
Cam is fairly bored with her new life working for Saga. She spends time sparring with Leon and trying to practice her magic. But the boredom doesn’t last.
Just after Saga gets Cam a mentor to possibly help with her powers a whole witch coven goes missing, with no clues for anyone to find except for signs of a fight and some blood. Cam unfortunately comes across the remains of the witches; all burned to death. Again, with no clues.
To add to the stress, someone from Leons past arrives to help with the investigation. That only leads to more questions.
This book has action, surprises, suspense, some humour and a very slow romance.
Leon’s daughter, Noelle, is delightful, full of sass, independence and innocence.
This basically ends on a cliffhanger and I’ll be starting the next book right away.

This is book 2 in The Veiled World Chronicles and reminded me of advice I have heard and given since childhood: "Be careful of what you wish for!".
Cam wished for more adventure in her life and wham, here it comes in book 2.
Not only do we have a slow-burn romance between her and Leon, but we have drama and danger. Oh and let us not forget Stephan, the boyfriend? Maybe, maybe not, only by reading will you find out what happens!
This one builds off of the turmoil and relationships that started in the first book and ends in another huge reveal which pulls you right into wanting to read book 3. What is that reveal? Read the books lol.
I received this from the author as an ARC and all opinions are my own!

Camryn is back and start out the book a few months after the last one where she feels things have been quite, then things go crazy. Ad in a coven going missing, Leon, his daughter, a man from Leon's past (who I loved to hate he was so well written) and the usual, things heat up. Lots of action, thinking, mystery, suspense, new and old characters and Camryn trying to learn more about her powers. Just an fun entertaining and hard book to put down. Kept getting sucked in to figure out what was going on and if everything fit together or it was just random things going sideways. Enjoyed it all and trying to figure it all out.

This is the second book in the series but I followed the story easily. I received this book free from BookSirens and am happy to leave this reveiw.
This is a fast read, slow burn, shifter romance with a murder mystery. The story does end on a cliff hanger that gives hints to the next book.
The characters are likable and the world building is done smoothly in the storyline. There are enough twists to keep you turning pages and wondering at times if you missed a clue or other players are not showing all their cards. While the next one is not at the top of my TBR pile l will be keeping an eye out for it.

My first book by L.J. Rivers and Embla Storm, when I decided to listen to Midnight Blues (The Veiled World Chronicles #2) I hadn't had the chance to read Broad Daylight.
This said, the authors were able to give us all the background to fully understand the world where they set the story for Midnight Blues.
Camryn, Leon and the rest of the crew are amazing characters, the story is full of action, somehow refreshing (Berlin is the scenario for this Urban Fantasy), fast-paced, with a lot of twists and turns, huge, unpredictable events, and I enjoyed it a loooot!
I will be definitely read book 1 and the next ones. 100% recommended!

I found the book a little slow and as I didn’t read book one, it felt like I was missing something important. The storyline is a mystery to me at first, the characters are interesting but I couldn’t quite get a handle on them or a clear picture of what is happening. It was near the end that I began to get more of an understanding. Best to read from the first book.

2nd book in the series. This book was not as good as the 1st but even so it was decent I haven't been crazy impressed by the series but have still enjoyed it. This series has kind of blended in with a lot of others in this genre very similar plot structures and character builds. Anyways with that being said the author does a good job getting you to relate to the characters and bringing them to life. Narration is well done.

This was a twisty one! I correctly guessed one aspect of the story, but that didn't take anything away from my read.

We learn more of Leon's history here, as he comes face to face with his past, while also working to hunt down a missing witch coven with Cam.

I like Cam's relationship with Leon, and am (not so patiently) waiting for them to get together!

I'm liking this series! Look forward to the next installment.

Covens attacked

This is an interesting take on urban fantasy and i was pulled into the story immediately. Lots of surprises and intrigue with limited foreshadowing. This is not a fun, happy story but an urban fantasy steeped in violence with interesting characters.

loved book IF THERE IS A BOOK 3

Left the story ending open…WHERE IS THE THIRD BOOK? Such a disappointing ending, UNLESS THERE IS A THIRD BOOK! Is it Bleeding Sunset, and if so why is it not on Kendal?

Camryn is a strong and interesting character. This is my first series by these authors, so I wasn't sure what to expect with it. It didn't disappoint and made me want more. I look forward to diving more into this world and with these authors.

Sad

Okay, I was, literally, holding my breath as I read the ending of this book. Great, great writing. Suspense, evil, death, sadness, selflessness. I'll take a break prior to reading the next book in the series, but I am eager to find out what occurs next.

Cam is tired of predictability, but it doesn't stay that way. Add in a missing coven and people from Leon's past and Cam now has a new adventure to take up. Ready for more.

Cam, a shield, and Leon, an empath form the perfect investigating as well as Bodyguard team assigned to Saga, the high master of all of Berlin's Veiled population. The Veiled are the paranormal and supernatural species grouped in Prides, Covens, Packs, and Clans that exist, and, yes, Vampires are part of the Veiled.
The author has written one of the best action-packed, page-turner, and captivating books that I have had the pleasure to read this year.
With her special gift, L.J. takes the reader on a virtual adventure filled with action, and twists and turns that make this adventure worthwhile.
It is a pity that only 5 Stars can be given as this very well-written plot deserves more.
