THE EIGHTH ROAD is an exciting prequel to book one in the Jayne Thorne, CIA Librarian urban fantasy series, TOMB OF THE QUEEN.

Having already read Tomb of the Queen, and having absolutely loved it, I was delighted to read this prequel. This book puts everything into perspective, told from Sophia's point of view, on how she would do anything to protect her sister, even to the point of having her magic suppressed. It was a quick read, but at the same time, filled with drama and intensity. How a short story managed to be so fast paced and thrilling, as well as describe the events so succinctly, is beyond me, yet that's exactly what this book offers. The background to what actually happened to Sophia and her parents is brilliantly penned. I thought that Jayne was my favourite character after reading Tomb of the Queen, someone who holds my attention, Sophia just changed all that! I love how caring Sophia is, how protective she is, as well as being a really badassed character! My only regret is that I have to wait for the next installment, which I am, with so much anticipation! I know there are lots of times people say "I can't wait" but trust me, after reading this book and Tomb of the Queen, you'll understand how true that sentiment is!
Sophia Thorne, is aware of her magical abilities. Forced to complete excruciating tasks her mother requires of her; she knows it’s the only way to keep her sister protected. Yet, how far will Sophia need to go to ensure her sister is safe?
Follow Sophia as she recounts the unfathomable actions of her mother as well as searches for answers left by her father in Joss Walker’s The Eighth Road. A prequel to the Jayne Thorne, CIA Librarian Series, readers get to see events from Sophia’s perspective.
Nonetheless, there are a few instances of profanity. Add that to being a short story of only fifty-seven pages and the little bit of use seems slightly overdone. So, given these parameters a rating of 4 out of 5 stars is awarded.
An excellent addition, The Eighth Road supplies clarity to unanswered questions readers may be seeking from the first book of the series.
Thank you to #TheEighthRoad, #JayneThorneCIALibrarianSeries #JossWalker, #RLPerez, and #TwoTalesPress for the opportunity to read this short story and give my honest review.
Review for “The Eight Road” by Joss Walker and R. L. Perez
It’s a short story from the world of “Jane Thorne, CIA Librarian” written by Joss Walker and R. L. Perez. The story focuses on Sofia Thorn’s attempts to keep magic away from her sister, Jayne. Will she succeed or are the sisters destined to repeat history? The authors attract the readers with their simple style that is understood easily. The story tackles serious issues like toxic parents, post traumatic disorder, traumatic childhood, coping with trauma and anxiety. Trying to start a new life, finding the truth, the consequences of the choice you made, things aren’t what they seem to be and many other themes are discussed within the pages of this book. The world created by the authors has a few similarities to “Heists & Headstones by C. L. Schneider and J. R. Swiger and the “Terminator” series. Sofia is like Ashi from the “Samurai Jack” series because both characters were raised by abusive mothers, who cared less about their wellbeing. Xiomara is the image of the witch, who is powerful and wise despite her old age. There are things with a special meaning namely the quartz – awareness, spiritual growth; the brambles – flexibility, tenacity, vigor; the vines – determination, endurance, survival, opportunity; the seaweed – current entanglements that relate to complexes that you are not addressing; the palm tree – conflict, competition, peace; the salt – purification; the cave – creation, life and death; abandoned road – following your own plans, stubbornness; the moon – the rhythm of time, the dark side of nature; red hair – energetic, distrust; the number eight – victory, good luck, prosperity and overcoming etc. Together with Katie Jenkins, Todd Fahnestock, Eileen Mueller, Richard H. Stephens, Alisha Klapheke, Laura Daleo, B. K. Boes, Nicole Zoltack, A. G. Roemmers, Anabel Bright, Sarah K. L. Wilson and many others, Joss Walker and R. L. Perez revolutionized urban fantasy. I recommend this book to children 15+ because some scenes are age-inappropriate to children.
Ruth Thorne was ruthless in her search for power, and would stop at nothing to get this. She was bent on her quest to break the spell on the torrent and was brutal in her training of Sophia, her eldest daughter. Thinking that Jayne her youngest had no magical powers, she had no time for her but still tried to drain her of her energy. Sophia on the other hand always looked out for Jayne and after her parents died, she was the only one left who could protect her. Sophia did not want her powers, she kept remembering the pain her mother had put her through and she feared she would turn into Ruth so before Jayne ever had the chance to come into her powers Sophia sought to get rid of hers. She went in search of a powerful witch called Xiomara and asked her to block her magic, but upon leaving the witch's house she witnessed a battle between two powerful magic wielders, and now she feared she would be less able to protect her beloved sister who had no clue of the dangers around them as her head was always in some fantasy book or other. This book is a great prequel to the Jayne Thorne series and it was great to read Sophie's history.
This is a short book which deals with the early life of Jayne and her older sister Sofia. Sofia is forced to do spells by her mother to keep her sister safe but when she finds her sister gone with her parents she rushes to save Jayne. There are flash forwards to the “present” as well as Sofia wants to find a powerful witch to help her suppress her magic so she can protect her younger sister who shows no magical aptitude.
I would recommend you read this book before starting the Jayne Thorne CIA librarian series so you can get a better feel for the bond that exists between these two sisters and how that bond will come to play in the future books.
I recommend this book for young and adult readers alike for two characters you “ see” at the end of the book will make an appearance in Tomb of the Queen- one minor and one a major character along with Jayne.
It’s a great new series so I hope you’ll enjoy it with me!
This book was a tiny book, but filled with action and adventure. Sofia and her Sister Jayne go on vacation to a beach in Miami. While in Miami, Sofia needs to make a stop to Little Havana to see a which that can hopefully help her.
Sofia has magic and her sister Jayne does not. But due to Sofia’s past with her mother and Jayne’s life in Sofia’s hands; Sofia wants to keep Jayne safe and away from magic.
While at the beach on their vacation, there is some past memories that took place in Jaynes life and some trouble in Little Havana.
Will Sofia be able to protect her sister once again? Will Sofia be able to get rid of her magic for good? Will Jayne have reactions from her past as a little girl?
Find out these questions and more in this little but very magical book.
An interesting short story, the two sister have quite the road ahead of them. I really loved how the story developed, without saying too much as I don't wish to spoil it. But keeping secrets from those you're close to, it comes with it's own complicated problems. As We see in this book, Jayne is intriguing. I'm not entirely sure what is going on with her, but I can't wait to read the rest of the series to find out.
Intriguing introduction to a new urban fantasy series! Meet sisters Sophia and Jayne as they take a road trip to Miami and Little Havana where Sophia hopes to rid herself of the magic inside of her. Caught in the magical crossfire as one coven of witches tries to protect the portal to the Torrent while the other wants to tap into it to unleash magic back on the unsuspecting world. Will light or dark prevail? We’ll have to wait and see.
An excellent prequel to what looks like a really good series. Sofia who has magic searches for a way to protect her sister who does not. I liked the two lead characters, strong intelligent women who can look after themselves. A well written short story. I received a complimentary copy from the Author and am leaving a honest voluntary review
Sophia wants to get rid of her magic and hide from the power due to the way her mother was hungry for magic. All she cares about is protecting her sister from the magical world and staying out of sight. This short story was a great way to introduce us to Jayne's world and I look forward to the series.
Having read the first book in this new series, Tomb of the Queen, this prequel perfectly filled in background questions I had on Jayne's family. Sophia and Jayne are wonderful, strong characters and I look forward to reading more about them.
I am soooo looking forward to this series. I enjoy J.T. Ellison’s writing and this new series (with her aka name) looks very promising. A magical woman who despises being it only wants a quiet life and her sister safe. Hmmm, wonder if that will happen.
The preview book has me already pulling up the next. I really like the storyline and feel that there is no end to the different adventures that Jayne can take us on. I predict that this is going to be a great series.
This book was fantastic - fast-paced, and certainly expands the back story. After reading this, you’ll be itching to read Book 1, which is also a wonderful read. If you like bookish, spunky female heroines, you’ll love this series. I received a free copy of this book, with no obligation.
This short story filled in some things from Tomb of the Queen and Master of Shadows. I enjoyed this quick read very much. I hope for more to come as a nice filler while I wait for the release of The Keeper of the flames.
This story introduces Jayne’s sister, and talks a bit about their childhood from her perspective. It was well written, but I feel it would have been better if I’d read book 1 and then this prequel. I’m still excited to learn more about Jayne and her adventures.
Short story prequel to series. Didn't really provide new information for the series. Maybe if I'd read it first? Definitely showed Sofia's commitment to Jayne though!
