A New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author, Penelope Sky is known for her dark romance that makes you fall for her characters….no matter how dark they seem. Her books are being translated into several languages around the world, and she’s sold more than a million books worldwide. She lives in a small town in California with her husband, where she spends most of her time writing on the back porch.
I wasted two hours of my life trying to get through the disgusting parts of this book series before deciding to super swipe to the end so I can leave a review then delete this "book" from my reading list forever. Absolute trash. I couldn't get far enough in to get to find out if there were any redeeming qualities. Kidnapping, rape, slavery, degrading and defeating women... we all know those people are out there. Perhaps we can agree that it is not ok to romanticize abuse. Absolutely revolting.
Disclaimer: I only read the three books in the Scotch Series( Scotch King, Scotch Queen, Scotch Royals ) and not the extra book included.
So this is a "dark romance" where the main character Crewe, the "Scotch" king gets revenge on a person who double crossed him by kidnapping the fella's sister. So American medical student, London finds herself locked up and shackled in the basement of Crewe's home. In summary, it's not a story of high moral quality, but it has enough of a dark and dirty soap opera quality that it was good escapism.
One thing I will say as a gripe, is that the Scotch Series ended at 75%, and there has been another book added on to the end. I haven’t read the extra book. It was disappointing to get to the end.
Now, in saying that, the series grabbed my attention and I ended up turning the pages well into the night for a few nights, and ended up feeling like I had a hangover because I was sleep-deprived!
I was on the fence as far as Crewe was concerned, but did understand why he did what he did. London – the fiery victim (thanks to her brother) was lovable from the moment you meet her. It didn’t take long for me to like Crewe, either. Couple of his men needed a thrashing though. And Ariel? Omg, I wanted to punch her in the face by the third book, the Scotch Royals.
This series has it all. Criminal Mastermind, Royalty, kidnapping, murder, betrayal, love, lust, survival and dominance. There could be some scenes some may find as being triggers (such as the kidnapping and being held captive in the conditions London was placed in), but I enjoyed it. But it also has a happy ending – I know that’s important for some readers.
I have read some reviews now that I’ve finished the series, and I think the harsh 1 star’s that have been given, were not earned in my opinion. They obviously downloaded the free book set and didn’t do their homework on the author – it clearly states she writes “Dark Romance”. There was a little bit of repetition with the sex scenes – not much changed from one to the other through the series. I did expect a little more on that front. I did read a review from someone who said the sex scenes were too graphic – and I only hope that reader never reads anything I write – she’d have a heart attack! There are also a few editing errors I came across, but not to a degree that it interferes with the enjoyment of the story.
If you like Dark Romance, you’ll love this series. I highly recommend it.
As I am an Australian, and I’m posting this review on Amazon.com (US site), it will not have the coveted “Verified Purchase” next to it.
I bought The Complete Series with full intention of enjoying really long reading but I must confess that I'm disappointed. Firs book - The Scotch King - it's just wrong on many levels... First of all main male character is just a mean asshole with no likable qualities. His only quality is his good looks which is the dumbest aspect possible.... the majority of assholes on this planet are those with good looks... so what?! The plot is flat and dull... it's based on "bought as a slave to pay somebody's debts" scenario but I'm in the middle of first book and nothing really happened yet. And what with the names?...they are bizarre and clash poorly with complete lack of action... Some aspects of this story are absolutely no-nos: 1. he slaps her on her face and beats her and she enjoys it or tries to justify his beatings, 2. he's supposed descendant of Scottish kings but works as some mysterious crime lord doing some unknown illegal business which explains why he's cruel and mean person.... lame... 3. there's surgery done on her brother's brain on the carpet in the middle of crowded room by one of his employees and said brother is conscious afterwords and can be transported to his hotel room like within an hour (no mention of any latex gloves or any antiseptic measures) and our heroine believes the procedure is true even though she's medical school student... what kind of gibberish is that?
basically as in any good smut any kind of interaction between characters in this book leads to sexual encounters... no matter how abstract and nonsense that is... and dialog is nonsense as well.
I'm not a quitter so... book no. 2 - The Scotch Queen... Surprise, surprise... our hero is an alcoholic... how sexy is that! He can perform in bed perfectly even after drinking 10 glasses of whisky... no comments... She's more and more attached to him... no idea why... and basically it's copy/paste from books 1-3 of Lingerie series with a few minor changes.
The whole witty plan our heroine created with her brother to outsmart her captor is... to make him fall in love with her... how smart is that! and obviously 100% doable...
book no. 3 - The Scotch Royals no action, no plot, only sex after sex after sex... seriously, that's the smuttiest smut ever constant break-ups and rejoining is annoying and exhausting and completely non-explainable.
Overall score: The Scotch King - 1 star The Scotch Queen - 1,5 stars The Scotch Royals - 0 stars Bad editing, ridiculous descriptions of the simplest aspects of the story and lack of consequence in execution of various ideas for the plot... she wants to be independent person but spends all her days sitting in bedroom reading books or organizing clothes in the walk-in closet just waiting for him to come after work (already drunk) and have sex ... pathetic...
I've never been more disappointed with any other book as much as this combo.

I got half the way through the 9th chapter of the first book in this series and stop reading it all together. What a horrific book. It is morbid on so many levels. Kidnapping, Torture, Slavery, Rape and so much more. To think that there might be a happy ending to this story is beyond belief. I wouldn't recommend this series to anyone. Absolutely Horrible. There are too many monsters in this world for me to read a fictional story about one for entertainment. It isn't worth rating. I only pushed 1 star because I had to in order to submit my comments.
Abuse, kidnapping, rape, and violence. Some guy tries to swindle a "mafia boss", and in retaliation, the guy kidnaps the sister of the first idiot. She's beautiful, smart and obviously attracted to her kidnapper because thats what makes women swoon -.- It was a free box set of cringe-worthy toxic attempts at romance. Read at your own risk!
This started out well with a good premise and interesting characters. Books 1 and 2 end on cliff-hangers which would be an auto -1/2 star if read individually. The big issues were the plot holes in book 2 and excessive angst/contrived drama in book 3. Does end on an hea.
Also - not all that dark after the first half of book 1.
Whelp . . . I learned there was a reason this was a free book, on the email from Book Shark. Because I read the whole disgusting (although I did skim and skip paragraphs and pages) mess . . . It receives a 2 ⭐ on my rating scale. Hmm . . . what's the word for s girl who falls in lust/love with her kidnapper? Ah, I remember now . . . Stockholm. Then let's throw some physical abuse (she forgives him for because he warned her to be a good girl), degradation (what else would you call being forced to sit at a dinner in only heels, a thong and makeup while being punched in the face by a dinner guest), sex trafficking (the guest who punched her was there to view the merchandise) . . . Ah . . but don't worry . . . he accepted the money but changed his mind, kept her for himself and returned the cash plus 1 million to the sadistic buyer for his inconvenience. Then let's add a sprinkle of Master and Slave BS. And let's not forget he ties her up face down to take her annual . . but, relax pet it always hurts the first time . . you look so pretty with tears streaming down your face. GAG! This will be the first and LAST time I read anything from this author.
I can't believe I haven't ever read anything from this author before. I saw an advertisement on Facebook and went to Amazon. I have been reading for days now, unable to put the book down. I am not much on sexual activity scenes but with everything else going on in the book it made to ok. I cant get over the relationship between Crewe & London. It was unbelievable. I dont want to describe the book I want you to get it and enjoy everything about it just as I did. This author has such an amazing way of story telling. I honestly can't say enough about this series. It is one of the most fantastic things I have read in ages. I can't wait to get other books from this author. She is so talented I can't imagine anything she writes being anything but unbelievably fantastic. GET THIS BOOK! YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.
▪︎This should've been a revenge series where the heroine kills the hero after making him fall for her. ▪︎This man doesn't deserve love, smh. How could she fall for him?!?!?!?! ▪︎She calls him "Sir" (cause it's a turn on for this stuck up, pretentious ass) while she sits on her knees (to do yk what) after they fall for each other. AAAAAAAAAAA 💀
I only got this because it was free on Amazon Kindle. Glad I didn't waste any money. Why do we still have to read about women being kidnapped, degraded, humiliated and raped? Don't we have enough of this in real life? Please stop romanticizing Stockholm syndrome!
TORTURE, BONDAGE, SLAVERY, HUMAN TRAFFICKING, KIDNAPPING. GRAPHIC SEX SCENES SIMILAR TO PORNOGRAPHY. HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS. NASTY BOOK THAT SHOULD NOT EVEN BE ON THE MARKET. GROSS INTERPRETATION OF A "BOOK". WASTE OF TIME AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY.

Protect Your Queen The Scotch Queen The Scotch Royals Buttons and Lace
The Queen Series Queen Bk. 1-3 Boxset by Penelope Sky. I am such a fan of Penelope Sky and I have read a few of her books and each book just digs its fingers into my skin deeper and deeper. I just love the way she writes these angsty, twisted, loyalty love stories and this box set and the series in its entirety just fit her mold perfectly.
Penelope writes these alphas that are not only dark but they are also very adorable. Sure, they are normally arrogant, stubborn and they can kind of be misogynistic. But, that really changes when they meet their FMC and she's strong, intelligent, resilient, fiery and they change into the men they were always meant to be and turn into gentle, caring, romantic sometimes possessive and obsessive beasts.
Crewe Donoghue fits this description perfectly. He's the Duke of a descended Scottish royalty, he has the air of both power and royalty...but at the same time, he has a turbulent and deep dark past. He's been humiliated by his ex-fiancee and after that, he chose to hardened his heart and refuses to ever love again.
Crew didn't expect to find love with London, he had just planned to keep her as his prisoner. London's brother had made an enemy out of Crewe and unfortunately, London was the collateral of that falling out. Neither Crewe nor London expected that when Crewe took London that their relationship was going to blossom into something that would prove to be stronger than the very foundations of Crewe's Scottish castles.
As normal, there was another in the shadows, just waiting for the right time to strike at both Crewe and London. It was so obvious that Crewe was blind to the manipulation from someone who was standing right by his side. My heart was being ripped in two for London, you could feel her pain and how she was being ripped in half. She wanted nothing more than to love the man in front of her, Crewe had become her best friend, her soulmate, and everything she had ever hoped to find. But, she knows that if Crewe is going to be happy and find his ultimate happiness, she's going to have to give up her own happiness, she's going to have to sacrifice her heart.
This story brought me to tears more than once, Crewe and London's story, was doomed from the start, it breaks your heart over and over again, and yet there is this sweet passion, that's ultimately the most beautiful love story possible. You could feel the chemistry from the very start and you know that they belong together and even though London has no royal status or ancestral weight like that that sits on Crewe's head. And it seems that Crewe doesn't care, he only has eyes for London, and with the power of their chemistry and passion you can tell that they have a powerful relationship ahead of them.
This is such a beautiful series and I just love that it is set in the Scottish countryside, I love the Scottish countryside so I loved feeling like I was actually there and it was absolutely perfect and I can't wait to re-read this series and go back to this beautiful setting and return to the friends that I made in this series.
I really enjoyed this series and I can't help but recommend this enjoyable read. The characters are amazing and the Scottish countryside is stunning and will have you wanting to re-read this series just to return to the setting. Penelope Sky is a great author and I look forward to reading more of her work.
The Scotch King 4 stars The premise of this story started out really well. I appreciated the hints of darkness and looked forward to diving into the minds of the characters. It was suspenseful and intriguing. There were a few times with London that I wanted to shake her because of how she acted which didn't seem appropriate after she saw the seriousness of the situation and, especially, after she met Bones.
I read this as part of the boxset.
The Scotch Queen 3.75 stars I struggled a bit more with this installment of the trilogy. I found myself wanting more story than sex for once but sadly, it was mainly sex. I wanted to dive deeper into how this all fit into the plan that Crewe had intended. London still drove me nuts with her behavior. I had hoped there would be more character development by this point but there wasn't. The darkness factor had also disappeared.
I read this as part of the boxset.
2.5 stars If I hadn't wanted to see where this book ended after reading this far into the story, I am not sure I would have continued on. I struggled with the plausibility of the story, which is a shame because the premise was really there. This could have been something so much more than it was. For a character, such as Crewe, and this supposedly dark world where laws don't pertain to him and he has done criminal activities, it seemed ludicrous that he would make friends with someone who had tried to kill him or who had wronged him in any way. There was a ton of manipulation by the characters which again didn't sit well with me because this is a world where loyalty is rewarded but that didn't seem to matter. Transitions were off, one moment London is struggling to help Crewe, and a month later with no explanation for her absence she is back at the hospital and dating but then she has a change of heart? Say WHAT?
I am just disappointed, because like I mentioned, this had the potential to be a mindblowing trilogy but instead just focused on sex and lost the story or the elements that had started me reading this story. If this had been the first book, I can guarantee I would not have finished it which is something I rarely, if ever, do.
I read this as part of the boxset.
Buttons and Lace 3.5 stars
I have had this book on my TBR for a while but finally, read it in The Scotch King Boxset where it was a bonus at the end. The blurb of this drew me in and it had the potential to be so much more than it was. There were so rough scenes but more showing the violence of how far Pearl was going to go in order to not be a victim. I admired that. However, there were many similarities that I found to Crewe and London in this book. I had a hard time finding it plausible that Pearl would act this way if her life and literal bones were on the line.
I did enjoy meeting Crow and liked the idea of the buttons premise. However, I started to see the trajectory of how this was going to go even this early in the book and am not sure I want to invest my time into another series that will likely frustrate me the same way that the Scottish King trilogy did. I am glad I read this as part of this book before I made a huge commitment financially to buy the series because these books are on the spendier side compared to the typical 3-4 dollars an ebook.
So far I have only made it part way through the first book and it had all the potential to be a good story. It started off with a strong opening, but I struggled to read through the innumerable mistakes that were made when it came to describing the Shetlands and later Glasgow. If there is ever proof that authors should write about what they know, this is it.
This series was recommended to me by an American friend who has never been to the UK, and most of the positive reviews seem to be written by other Americans, so the chances are if you are unfamiliar with the UK you will probably enjoy this story too. Unfortunately for me, every time I start to enjoy the book the author then mentions something absurdly incorrect that pulls me back out of the story again. The geography and weather for the Shetlands and Glasgow is completely incorrect, and later there is a strange obsession with passing on 'royal Scottish blood', which no one outside of the US cares about.
The name of the male lead is also a bit bizarre to me, I accepted it when I believed he was American but then later on in the book it hints that he was born and raised in Scotland so I have no idea why such an odd name was chosen (however I haven't finished the book and there is a chance he wasn't born in Scotland/to Scottish parents, in which case this makes sense.)
Ignoring these inaccuracies, the story itself wasn't what I was expecting. The 'romance' between the main characters is based on abuse and lust, and some of the events that happen are completely absurd. If you thought kidnapping someone in return for non-payment was unlikely just wait until you read about the brain surgery in the middle of a crowded room, completed by someone with no experience and where the victim makes a remarkable recovery. Perhaps later on in the book the amateur brain surgeon is revealed to actually be someone with at least some experience as a doctor.
I'm going to attempt to finish this story but in all honesty I think it's unlikely. The only reason I haven't given 1 star is because there is a chance the book improves further on. Maybe the relationship becomes less abusive/coercive and maybe the author's description of Scotland and the Scottish Isles becomes much more accurate. But for the first 20 or so chapters of the first book, 2 stars is a generous rating.

I’m truly becoming a huge fan of Penelope Sky and having read her Buttons and Beyond Buttons series I have become hooked on her angsty, twisted loyalty love stories. This series fits that model perfectly.
There’s something about Penelope’s alphas that just make them darkly adorable. Generally, they are arrogant, stubborn and bordering on misogynistic but when they meet these strong, resilient and fiery women they fold into gentle, caring and romantic beasts.
Crewe Donoghue is no exception to this. As a Duke of descended Scottish royalty he’s powerful and regal… but with a turbulent dark past and a humiliation at the hands of his ex-fiancée, he’s hardened his heart to love.
Love was far from what he expected to find in his prisoner, London. Her brother had made an enemy of Crewe and she was the collateral. Little did either of them know that their relationship would develop into something stronger than the foundations of his Scottish castles.
But as with all good love stories, there’s usually someone watching from the wings waiting for a time to strike. I’ve spent the whole time reading this book screaming at Crewe for not seeing the manipulation from someone so close to him. It is heartbreaking because as the reader you can feel London’s pain… she’s being ripped in two. She so desperately loves the man who has become her soulmate… but in order for him to be completely happy, she is forced to sacrifice her own heart.
I cried proper tears reading this book as their story is just so heartbreakingly doomed yet passionately beautiful. Their chemistry is explosive and they belong together, despite her lack of royal status and weight of ancestral expectation on Crewe’s head.
It’s a wonderful series and I love that it is set in the stunning Scottish countryside… but there was just one slight issue in book one that needs rectifying. The Scottish Shetland islands are indeed very cold, but they definitely don’t have native penguins. That’s the Southern Shetland Islands off the coast of Antarctica… not Scotland. Other than that… I absolutely loved it!

The Scotch King Joseph Ingram made the mistake of stealing from me—four million dollars. He took my intelligence without paying for it. And thought he could get away with it. Think again. Now I’ll take something from him—something irreplaceable. His sister. Collateral. But even when Joseph doubles the amount of money he owes me, I don’t give her up. Nope. I have an image to maintain. So I keep her. And I’m not giving her up.
The Scotch Queen I wasn't sure what changed my mind about giving London to Bones, but something did. Now London is officially mine. She's sassy, feisty, and she still tells me off when I have her under my thumb. I love it. Now I have a deal with the Barsetti brothers, Josephine is still pining for me, and revenge is heavy on my mind. I'm not sure what to do with London now that I'm not gonna kill her. But I'm certainly not going to fall in love with her.
The Scotch Royals London is a lot more useful than I anticipated. She gets me what I need like a pro. With her by my side, I feel like I can do anything. My need for revenge is dimmed. My anger is contained. But her brother is still a problem. She wants me to let him go. I'm not sure if I can.
Although this is sold as a dark romance, I found it rather light! Ok, so he was a bad man initially as he kidnapped and imprisoned her for six months and there is of course the possibility of the Stockholm syndrome, but we are talking fairytale here; and as London's brother was mixed up in this sordid life, it shouldn't have come as any surprise.
Having said the above, Crewe treated London very well and it was lovely to see their relationship develop. Having said this, take out the daily sex scenes and the books could have been cut down to two! I Ioved their chemistry and Crewe, once you get to know him is actually a real softy! I only wish that London had spoken to him earlier about her thoughts and alleviated the unnecessary angst, but that's the story!
As for his business partner, I don’t understand why she had to be so malignant and I thought she got off far too leniently. It would have been good to know her history and I felt that there could have been another more interesting story there. Perhaps for another day.
It would have been fun if London could have become more involved with the Skotch business thereby giving a reason to get rid of the gnome!
Narration wise, please tell Samantha Cook to pronounce Edinburgh correctly as in ....burra and not ....burg! Also for some reason Michael couldn't get a handle on Joseph. He is American and not either Irish or Scottish!!! This drove me insane as his voice kept changing and funnily enough was never narrated as an American!
Another thing that irked me was the fact that a duchess is addressed as "Your Grace" and not "Lady" and for some reason he was never referred to by his correct title.
Overall, I really liked it, particularly the epilogue and I didn't want the story to end. I would love to hear more about Joseph.
#1 - I could not put this book down. What starts off with taking a hostage to fulfill a debt turns into more than anyone bargained for. Crewe steals London to keep her as his slave, but sparks fly and ideals change. Can you fall in love with your captor or will you keep putting for your escape. The characters in this book were phenomenal. The reader can feel the hatred and despair, and you do not want to like Crewe but you have no choice. I did not want the book to end. Cannot wait until the next book is available. This is a must read.
#2 - Wow, I thought I loved the first book in the series. This is hands down even better. The story takes over with London secretly trying to get Crewe to fall in love with her in hopes he would set her free. As luck would have it, Crewe does fall for her but a botched attempt at setting her free by her brother leads to gunfire and mayhem with Crewe in the crossfire. Now that London is back in NY will she plan for her future or will she only want a future with Crewe. The emotion in this book was so high, you fell in love right along with the characters. Cannot wait until book three. I need to see where this story goes.
#3 - This story was the perfect ending to a great series. The saga continues with London's return to NY. No longer being held captive, her freedom to return to her old life is not as perfect as she thought. Meanwhile, Crewe goes back and forth between missing her and hating her. But when she decides she wants to go back to him, she is met with more negativity from Ariel. Will she throw it all away so that his business relationship survives, or will Crewe finally have true love, but end his professional family? This book had beautiful, strong characters, emotional rollercoasters with every turn of the page and enough angst to keep the reader going. It was a fabulous read that I highly recommend.
Dark, heart stopping and absolutely beautiful! Penelope Sky is a wonderful author and she has created a wonderful series with unforgettable characters. From the first sentence I was completely engrossed and had a hard time putting the book down to do anything. I just wanted to know what would happen next.
Crewe is the perfect antihero. Handsome, dominate, ruthless, secretive, loyal........and has a heart of gold, a beautifully damaged soul, and boundless love. Everything a man who is royalty who runs a successful scotch empire in front of the world, as well as the very dark, successful underground empire he rules like a king.
London is spirited, fierce, tough, and compassionate. Everything about her seems delicate, but she has an indomitable soul and a steel spine. You can't help but love the heroine she is.
Together, Crewe and London learn what real, unselfish love and true forgiveness is. Without each other, they're nothing and succumb to darkness. Together they can do anything.
I truly enjoyed this series and devoured it once I started. I had never read Penelope Sky before, but now that I have, I'm anxiously waiting to read more of her series. She an author that should be experienced.
