Hummingbird Tales

Rate this book
A writer is an adventurer, an explorer, a person of many forms and faces. The stories call to us, presenting themselves as vibrant beacons beyond the horizon, a dazzling lighthouse welcoming us to shore, inviting us home, and then we write them. Hummingbird Tales explores this exact notion, that creators are merely brave souls, unafraid to chase those beams of light, temporarily slip into a new mind, and discover what lies within the unknown. From fantasy to horror, fiction to nonfiction, plotted-out stories to prose, introspection to extrospection, love to loss, Brittney Kristina dives into it all, traversing the uncharted territories of her own mind. Eager to push past boundaries and test her limits, as well as envelop herself in new perspectives and tropes, Kristina has compiled her unique works, written throughout several years, and has presented them in her very first collection of pieces. Occasionally sporadic, unapologetically raw, and ever-changing, these are the tales of a hummingbird.

This was such a fascinating read because you really get all different sorts of pieces inside this one book! Some are very personal, others feel whimsical, others are dark. But all written so beautifully!

Brittney Kristina is a writer to remember. I have the privilege of knowing her both on and off the page, and she has been a source of creative inspiration no matter the medium. But WOW— “Hummingbird Tales” captures the flighty spirit of a wandering soul, a human being with an insatiable drive to delve deeply into the dark and gruesome matters of the living, and the power of memory. Straddling the line between fiction and nonfiction, and sometimes mixing genres, B.K. writes with clarity and confidence and leaves the reader breathless. She is vulnerable, imaginative, fantastical, and hypnotic in her prose, and it is dizzyingly beautiful. I very much look forward to rereading this beautiful work of original prose as well as Brittney Kristina’s other (and future!) novels.

Brittney's best work yet. A heartfelt and raw journal entry about identity, self-worth, and life. Not every piece was my favorite, yet overall a strong book.

This collection of short stories and creative nonfiction tales was unlike anything else I've ever read. You can tell the author put her all into every story she wrote.

My top 3 are: The White Room, I am here, and What a lovely day it is.

Loved this so much!! The nonfiction stories were so beautiful and vulnerable and made me cry and feel many things. And the short stories were so gripping that I wish they were all full novels.

This collection of short stories and creative non-fiction was absolutely perfect in every aspect. Each story was truly deep, raw, honest, and plain out touching.

I wasn't surprised at all by how good this book was. I had read her last novel 'Fifty Days' and was immediately captivated by her writing, so I had a feeling her newest release would not disappoint me-- and it didn't. There were stories that made me want to cry, some that left me feeling a little creeped out, and some that warmed my heart with inspiration.

If you enjoy short stories, or psychological short stories, I'd recommend reading this book.

Very intriguing read!! I’ve never felt like I’ve gotten such a good perspective of someone else’s creative process before. Some of the individual pieces felt unfinished, and I often felt like the ideas and themes were a bit repetitive, but overall I definitely got a definitive feeling of who Kristina is as a person, which is really interesting. I noticed a few words used incorrectly and some sentences that had a few too many commas- I think the book could have benefitted from an extra editor. Definitely an enjoyable read and a cool perspective into who Brittney is as a person!!
