I had an amazing time reading Leviathan Rising: A WWII Submarine Adventure Novel from the USS Bull Shark Naval Thriller Series Book Two, written by full-time author Scott Cook.
I love losing myself on a good story. This powerful one is set during World War 2, and it focuses on the rivalry between Japan and North America. This book reads like a fast-paced novel and it is very well-written.
I believe that this book is a literary achievement of the highest order, a book that illuminates, thrills, and reminds us those heroes sometimes do live among us.
I think this story is amazing and riveting, and I highly recommend reading it. It will take your breath away!
This was a great book, to read. Being historical fiction you know part of the outcome but not the details. As I read this book I realized some things just don't change. War, hate it. I look forward to reading the next in the series
This one was a polished read with a smooth moving story that covered all the essential elements of a good WW2 American fleet submarine with a good twist.
“Leviathan Rising” is another poignant and captivating story from the brilliant mind of Scott Cook. What can I say? After reading some of his other novels, I must admit I had high expectations with this one. First and foremost, I wasn’t disappointed and neither will you be if you choose to read any of her books, I am totally sure about that! I am really astounded at his enormous ability in writing words that flow with such ease over the deplorable settings he writes about. Second World War is a terrible context, but he did an amazing job! He didn’t transport me to another time and place; he lived there and invited me to sit next to him in the death world of Pearl Harbor. In my humble opinion, the descriptions and settings are brutally authentic. Without hesitation it’s a five-star, heart-wrenching story worthy of reading again and again.
This second installment in the USS Bull Shark Naval Thriller series is a distinct improvement over the first book. In both, the author spins a very interesting naval warfare yarn that hold the reader’s rapt attention. However, this time the author didn’t get sidetracked by including a totally implausible side story that detracted somewhat from the excellent naval story he was creating. This time he entertained the reader with some rather unexpected twists and turns that while rather fantastical were not implausible and detracting. He wove them into the story skillfully. One minor criticism I have is on a somewhat historical matter: the twin engine B-26 was never known as the Liberator. That name belonged to the much larger and more successful 4 engine Consolidated B-24. The Martin B-26 was known as the Marauder.
Just from the preface I understood that this book, while taking a lot of things from history, was going to be written in a way that I could appreciate. Witty and explicitly detailed, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I am not much into books of this genre, but I ended up liking it more than I expected. Much of that had to do with the writing. I also liked that the author included the longitude and latitude coordinates for the specific locations at the beginning of the chapters. It was a nice touch, one that is not normally seen. The action kept me on the edge of my seat and I found I could not put it down. I loved it! I want to go and read others from this author. I recommend this book to anyone.
“Leviathan Rising” is another excellent book written by Scott Cook. In this, the second book in the series USS Bull Shark Naval Thriller, the fight develops in the paradisiac waters of the Pacific ocean. The Imperial Japanese Navy has a secret plan to defeat the American fleet. Will they succeed? The story hooked me from the very beginning and the unexpected twists and turns in the plot kept me reading without stopping until its last page. It is very well written; action, history and political intrigue are skilfully woven into its pages. The descriptions of events and settings, and the construction of the characters are excellent. Some of the passages are spine-tingling. The book is unputdownable. In my opinion, that reflects the great ability of the writer and the quality of the novel.
Leviathan Rising is the kind of book that would appeal to those who have an interest in watercrafts used in warfare. The author uses precision of latitudes and longitudes and descriptive imagery to convey every scene to the readers. The characters capture tension, action and movement through their dialogues and choice of language. The author doesn’t shy away from using strong language to express the rage, confusion, panic and power dynamics between characters in the book. Some people might find historical details subjective to what they may have heard or read before. However, the war-like ambiance in the book is perfectly woven together through description, dialogues and character chemistry. If you enjoy reading war accounts and narratives, this book might be of interest.
About navy and wars Leviathan Rising: A WWII Submarine Adventure Novel is the second book of the series USS Bull Shark Naval Thriller by Scott Cook. This reader gave me the impression that the author must be a former soldier or navy sailor because he seems to know how wars develop and how soldiers feel. This is not my favourite book, perhaps because I was not able to follow some ideas, not because they were not well explained but because of war jargon. Despite this, I could empathise with the main character and I finished the novel. This was a good book to pass the time. I believe this reader can be good for adult audiences.
The saga continues as the Bull Shark seeks out the enemy’s secret seagoing weapon. Great character development with the new and existing crew as well as the weaving in of some incredible historical details that tell of the ultimate sacrifices that many US servicemen made for America. Truly the home of the brave ! An entertaining read that the skillful & talented author has woven together using historical fact, imagination and excellent fiction writing abilities. All in all this book is very hard to put down for the night; just like it’s predecessor.
If you like the genre, you'll probably love Scott Cook. Leviathan Rising is a good balance of the tactical submarine warfare game (where he explains the liberties he takes with certain aspects that will bother only the most technically precise minded reader) with enough plot to create a compelling tale with some twists and turns that keep the reader invested till the end. Some small nitpicks with the story (good guys are GOOD and bad guys are BAD) but otherwise a fine tale.
Scott Cook has provided us with another chapter of Captain Turner and his crew. Scott gives enough history along with fiction to allow his readers an entire book on excitement, intrigue , sorrow and joy. You will not be able to put it down. Also, follow with his Scott Jarvis series for more fun and great reading.
An excellent read from Mr. Cook! His plot mixed with subplots keep your attention focused without losing his readers in minutiae. One also gets an understanding of how life actually went on during the war years, and reveals what the American psyche used to be--- doing the "right" thing when no one is looking and not taking improper advantage of another's misfortune.
I like the inclusion of historical facts such a director John Ford filming the battle of Midway. The concept of submarine air carrier seems a bit sci-fi to me but, it was a well told story. I appreciate the extra details of operating a WW2 submarine included in the storyline.
Enjoyed the entire book. Enough realism and a little fantasy and only a couple of spelling and grammatical errors, Seriously, a good read and accurate historically except the well done pretend parts which were written to read well and it did. Look forward to book 3
Once again the crew of the Bull Shark shows what it's really made of. Treachery, deceit, and tears are all to found in this tale. If only I had seen this in Jr. High I would have become a history buff. Now it's time to turn the page and continue the War
This is the first historical fiction I've read. The book, second in the series, was awesome reading as was the first Operation Snare Drum. It was hard to put either one of the books dow. Intrigue, drama, and intense battle scenes- these books had all of this and more. I highly recomend both books. Thank you Scott!
With a new group of naval officers and sailors, life is not the same on the Bull Shark! The storyline is totally different from the first book, other than having a secret mission. At first, I was unsure if I would like this new plot. However, it grabbed me and I couldn’t let go. Thanks for a very entertaining read!
Where to begin? The action, the plots, sub-plots, the twists and turns never stop! Like four or five books in one yet woven together in a masterful style. I'm a new fan of Scott Cook!
I have read several books describing the naval battle of Midway, many feeling that it was the timing point of the war in the pacific. This is a good one involving the submarine service.
This story kept me completely engrossed. It takes place near the Battle for Midway during WW2. It is about the defeat of a Japanese super submarine by a new US prototype submarine. The characters real and fictional all have believable personalities.
If you have read the first book you will enjoy the companion, continuing the cast of characters from the Atlantic through to the Battle of Midway. Great read
Love the story and the way the author brings a land lubber into the world of submariners . The action is very high, intensity and drama also. Recommend highly.
Great submarine tale but I never heard a diving alarm while we were submerged. Although my time way after WW II, I thoroughly enjoyed the Bull Shark adventures. Well told any surrealistic. Ill be looking into more of Mr. Cook's books.
I liked the way Scott Cook put together this, the original story of what eventually became the story of the battle for Guadalcanal & of course BULL SHARK'S part in it!
A real page turner! This book just never quit giving and giving; from laughter, to sorrow, to wartime victories, twists and turns that did not deject even to the last page. Read book one for a great introduction to Bull Shark!
This book is areal page turner. Anvil Turner takes on the enemy and a challenging couple of new officers and two new seamen. He uses his true leadership qualities to bring the Bull Shark through its mission in a successful manner.
Naval history about Midway has focused on the epic carrier battle. This yarn is on the silent service and one boat in particular: Bull Shark. The epic dueling between two submarines is a great story.
