I enjoyed this paranormal romance (werewolves and zombies) though it was far shorter than I expected (123-page novella). That's partly on me for not checking beforehand, but I do think it also adversely affected the plot development.
Seth is the alpha werewolf in London, and Maisie is a human who works in an animal clinic. They meet while fighting zombies and Maisie shoots through him to help him out. He returns the favor by helping her back to the clinic (she has a bum leg courtesy of an incident prior to the story). Sparks fly, perhaps a little too fast given that they just met, and Seth quickly decides he's keeping her.
There's a lot of backstory info missing from the teased bits we do get. Seth admits to not being a born were and to being old, but we know nothing about his past. He also apparently had a woman previously who somehow betrayed him, suggesting there is a lot more to the story than we're given (and it doesn't keep him from deciding to keep Maisie). For Maisie's part, we learn a little about how she ended up on her own, but not about how long she's been that way. All of these missing parts could be in previous novels, though this book is touted as first in the series. Maybe it's a spin off?
Anyway, a good plot builds up, and we learn that this newest crop of zombies is behaving differently than zombies tend to do, but then we never really learn much more. I suspect that will be the overarching series plot. I just wish we'd had a little more here. It felt like the author spent time on this lovely unraveling of a good story and then realized she only had maybe 30 pages left to wrap things up. I just needed a little more.
I received a copy of this book for free from BookBub. I'm writing this review voluntarily, and it reflects my honest opinion. Thanks!
