After recent events, the Runaways are in a dark and scary place. There are so many pieces to pick up and choices to be made…and if the Runaways are good at anything it’s making bad choices. Which leads them to descend into one of the most terrifying Marvel Universe locations ever: High School! It goes better for some than others. But when Wolverine and Pixie of the X-Men arrive with an offer for Molly, she finds herself faced with the biggest decision of her young life: stay with the Runaways — or finally find a home on the mutant island utopia that is Krakoa? Meanwhile, Nico made a rough decision…and she’s about to pay for it.
So with a huge reality check on their maturity and trust of one another after their experiences in Cannon Fodder it looks likes this was going to be a time of reflection and growth, with three of them going back to school, and Karolina, Doombot, Nico and Chance looking to improve their lives in some way, nothing can go wrong, right? Well I know what did go wrong, Rainbow Rowell's run; it feels like she had a great idea of how to kick of this fourth season in volume one but the good ideas just got more and more difficult to find as the series progressed, by this final volume almost everything that happens has happened at least once before in the series! A nothing-to-see-hear Two Star, 4.5 out of 12. 2023 read
I just heard that Marvel now cancelled the Runaways series. This is supposed to be the last volume in that run, which is a real shame because I thought Rainbow Rowell was doing a great job writing these fun and adventurous stories! Andrés Genolet did a great job on the artwork, too. I would really have loved to continue reading about everything that happens to this group of teenagers.
Even thought #38 was a great ending to this story arch, there are a lot of unanswered questions (like what happens in the future, what happens to Karolina, and so on... Maybe one day Marvel will decide to pick this up again, a girl can only hope!
While this is just as good as the volumes that precede it, due to an abrupt cancellation of the series it has to serve as a finale, and it is lousy at that. Created with the intention of having a next volume, there are nothing but cliffhangers and unresolved storylines by the last page. I have nothing but love for the creative team, but here's a big BOOOOOOO for Marvel.
Doombot. Majesdanians. Alex Wilder. Gert Squared. Wolverine and the X-Men. All of this and more in the final volume of Rainbow Rowell's Runaways.
Don't expect an ending here. While comics are always telling an ongoing story, this volume does not cap off Rainbow Rowell's run at all, instead leaving us with more questions than answers. But for that, I blame Marvel more than anyone else.
The story itself is still as brilliant and heartfelt as ever. There are twists, turns, continuity references that will make you smile, and character beats that feel so natural it's as if BKV has returned to write the series again. It's all so wonderful, and then it has to end. Sigh.
Andres Genolet's artwork again follows ably in the footsteps of Kris Anka, who does return for the final issue although it's only for a few pages. Runaways has always looked polished without trying too hard, and the fashions continue to impress.
Don't be sad that it's over, be happy that we got to experience it at all. 38 issues is more than I'd have ever hoped for way back when this series started, and it's more than any other volume has reached before. Maybe one day the Runaways will get a chance to address all the cliffhangers here, but don't let the open-ended ending stop you from enjoying this while it lasts.
Apparently this is the last volume in the series. I have enjoyed this series. However I found this one a bit confusing at times. Some of the parts with Gert were not as clear as they could be.
But overall I enjoyed the illustrations and the story.
Wrapping up the series for now, though with an ending that feels much more like a season break than a finale, this volume feels particularly strong on mixing classic teenage problems (school; your body being weird; feelings are confusing) with a superhero spin (you're only back there because being in a superteam fucked up so badly; nobody on the planet understands your species' biology; your love rival is your own future self). I laughed, I cried, I had a horrible moment when I remembered that sheltering in place drills in schools are a thing that happens in real America too.
I have been putting off the final (100th) issue for MONTHS. Runaways, my favorite comic growing up (that then went down the gutter as soon as Vaughan left) got the best reboot ever - so saying goodbye to them, again, sucks. This is a stellar volume that continues to lean on this earnest group of teens who are all, more or less, figuring out adulthood - making the tough and difficult choices instead of the easy, stupid ones we make when we're younger. (When did Molly become an adult??!) Except these choices involve aliens and time travel.
It's maddening that as great as this volume is, it's clearly unfinished - there are some BIG events in the final volume that now won't be resolved:
I have absolutely no clue why Marvel couldn't give the team one more volume to wrap all of this up. I'm pretty mad about it because it does a disservice to all of these characters and the fans who have stuck through 100 issues. Instead, we'll have to wait to see what happens when our Runaways guest star in other comics (unlikely) or their next series (also unlikely). I'm grateful we got two final pages from the series' founding original artist, Adrian Alphona (drawing in a new style), as well as longtime Runaways artist (and my all time favorite), Kris Anka.
I'm so so grateful to Rowell, Anka, Genolet and the entire creative team took a chance and gave Runaways such a beautiful, meaningful second life (especially Gert Yorkes).
4.5⭐️ I have been waiting sooo long to read this series and noe that I'm done, I definently have mixed reviews. The first two volumes were PERFECT, but I felt the series went downhill from there. This final volume was pretty great, but overall volumes 3-5 seemed to lack a plot?? Any plot they had was small, self-contained and felt flat or pointless to me. I also missed the couple/duo moments from the show...it felt like the group was always together at every single second, and it left we wanting for those smaller, more intimate and personal scenes.
From an emotional POV, though, this warmed my heart so much 😭 15 year old me is screaming rn and so tf is 19 year old me. (#deanoruforlife)
I'm really so happy I finally could read this series, and, regardless of its quality (or lack thereof at points) it is more than safe to say that I savoured every moment. (#cryingscreamingthrowingup)
I can't believe this is the last volume of the run. My worst fear came true. This just leaves us wanting more, in fact, it doesn't wrap anything up. It really felt like it was written with the expectation that there would be another volume. I wonder if Rainbow wrote this then later on was told by Marvel they were canceling the series.
Such a shame. I really liked this run and it was great seeing the gang again. Hopefully Marvel greenlights another Runaways run in the future.
Rainbow Rowell's Runaways run (say that ten times fast!) comes to an untidy conclusion in Come Away With Me. Glum Gert goes back to high school (trailed by Victor and football star Gib), Nico tries to help Karolina while dealing with her villain-fueled staff, Chase has a secret love interest, and Molly is recruited by the X-Men. Just as each of these stories starts to heat up, the volume concludes - as does the series, apparently (cue sad trombone).
Likely a four-star read without the sadly dangling plot threads.
OH MY GOD. this series will 100% go on my favorites shelf. after every volume I have raved about Rainbow Rowell's writing and this volume is no different. it was so sad and yet so perfect, a very bittersweet ending for this run of the Runaways. I am fascinated to see where the storyline goes in the future and where the team ends up. Issue one was all about the team coming together and this volume especially the final issue was all about them drifting apart. I am so looking forward to Rainbow Rowell's upcoming run of She-Hulk and I hope that this was not her final adventure with the Runaways. Please this was so so amazing I can't.
It's a bummer this series got canceled. Rowell clearly had further plans for the Runaways, as evidenced by several unresolved plotlines here. I still enjoyed my time with this series and think it's a worthy sequel to the original run. I actually liked the characters more here, even if the story arcs were never more than "good."
How can it be cancelled on that note? So frustrating. It was nice to see the Runaways try to regain a sense of normalcy after the superhero chaos of the last volume. Nico giving up her staff to Karrie as she goes on an intergalatic healing trip...just seems like a poor idea in terms of self defense, even if your soul is at stake.
I guess I'll just have to look for fanfiction for closure.

I hate that this is how it ends, there was so much potential left in this series. The repercussions of the time travel element is kind of smoothed over without much scrutiny. Liked the Wolverine and Pixie cameos.
The ending to this series was a bit rushed due to sudden cancellation, but I still give Rainbow Rowell a ton of credit for writing the only really good Runaways series since the initial Vaughan/Alphona run.
As with everything comic related I love (minus Saga), this series was canceled. This was a great story with an interesting arch and ending on a fucking cliff hanger Bc why, universe, whyyyyy? Follow me for more doomed to fail comic series 💫💫💫
Gotta give this last volume of my beloved series a 5, for all the feels along this wonderful journey. I'll never forget these beautiful characters, or stop wondering where Rainbow was going with them next, or stop desperately longing for more. So, so bummed at Marvel for the sudden cancellation :(
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…just talk to each other! Also the fact that my library only owns the first 6 volumes of so many graphic novel series is crazy to me.
