Certainly not. Joan Crawford was a fascinating woman who, from a young age wanted to truly succeed. Her childhood was nothing to write home about, and really never getting better, fueled her desire to build a life in theatre and movies just for herself. Married four time, divorced three, she lost her last husband to a heart attack. Her career was filled with its ups and downs. From silent film to cinematic treasures she is still remembered for her special beauty and her demanding life style. Very informative read.
This is an interesting overview of Joan Crawford's life. I was disappointed there were no photos of the men she married or her four children.
Having read BETTE & JOAN: THE DIVINE FEUD (by Shaun Considine), I thought this summary was lacking. Bette and Joan were competitors from their earliest days, not from the time of WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? (as was indicated in this book). Bette was enamored with Franchot Tone and was devastated when Joan married him. The two women led lives full of hatred toward each other, yet this book only shows animosity in their later years.
Interesting overview of Joan Crawford’s life and career. She is remembered for playing many memorable roles in her movies.
Many also remember her from her adopted daughter Christina’s book “ Mommy dearest” - the words “no wire hangers” come to mind. Her book was published after Joan Crawford’s death and I’m not sure how much of it is an exaggeration.
I enjoyed the book but I would have liked to know a little more about Joan Crawford the person.
She might have been one of the most emotionally unhealthy classic hollywood starts. It seems her entire life was pretty traumatic, traumatic childhood (molested by her stepdad), traumatic career (forced into the casting couch), traumatic retirement (career decline and rejected by stepkids).
But she was very beautiful and acted in some great movies.
I particularly recommend "Johnny Guitar" a lesser known movie that is an absolute banger.
I only Joan Crawford from the horror and suspense genre. I probably have seen her in the earlier films but was too young to remember. She seems to have fallen out with anyone that was close to her. Parents, husbands and two elder children. Seems sad and tragic.
Joan Crawford led an interesting life. With many lows to highs, she was a incredible person. Determined to make a name for herself, she lived to the fullest. Multiple love interests caused her to be married three times. She was estranged from her two adopted children, but had a good relationship with the twins. She died alone, sadly.
I admired Joan Crawford, especially in Mildred Pierce and in Whatever happened to Baby Jane, but did not become a fan. Reading this short but still very interesting biography, I understand what woman was hiding behind the actress.
While a serious actress, she hand more struggles than she was entitled to. An acting career is demanding, impacting the “behind the screen” life, impacting both the actor and the off-screen family.
Joan Crawford led an interesting life. The way she started off as a dancer would surprise me how she managed to become such a big movie star. It was sad to see her cut her eldest children from her will. I felt that she never bonded with them since they were adopted!
A quick and easy read of Joan Crawford's life. Skimming over her early life and giving a decent overview of her marriages and films. Includes information about her adoptions of her children and brief details of her spat with Bettie Davis
This short 40-page bio could’ve been better. There’s not much sympathy given to Joan Crawford. There are brief mentions of her feud with Bette Davis and her estrangement from her older adopted children but not many details. I think she must’ve been a much more complex and interesting person than this short bio reveals.
