Alone in a hunting cabin, off-grid in an untamed wilderness. How does a marriage come to this?

NBD guys but I took the leap considering there are ZERO reviews on Goodreads.
THE PLOT
Cameron's husband died in a bear attack. One day she's grieving, the next day she finds his serial killer trophy photos. Cool cool cool *Jake Perralta voice*. As the case into her husband's devious activities unravel, Cameron is on the hunt to see if her husband is really as dead as they say.
MY OPINNI
I literally blitzed through this in one evening. It was an easy read. Now, was this book a piece of literary genius? No. But did it hold my attention the entire time? Yes. Was the ending very obvious and easy to guess? Yes. But it was still entertaining enough that I kept reading... I didn't really care if there was much "shock value." It's hard to explain, but sometimes the lack of shock bothers me because the book is taking itself TOO seriously and holding back way too much info and the characters are wilding. But even though the mystery wasn't very mysterious, the other redeeming qualities of the book made it enjoyable. I'm not sure if that makes sense LOL.
If you expect to be blown off your feet by a big reveal, pass on this one.
Ok... now this may sound weird, but some of the book was cute. LOL. This book was like half psychological thriller and half Nicolas Sparks book, and I ain't mad about it. It was unrealistic and the romance between characters did make me roll my eyes, but it's all lighthearted. I think the difference between this and a book like Unmissing, which is equally unrealistic and cheesy, is none of the POVs are annoying AF for no reason. Cameron is part grieving wife, part angry, part baddie on a mission. Tanner, the investigating detective is straightforward guy who doesn't rustle any feathers. He's kind of like oatmeal.
I liked the premise of this novel. I took a chance despite ZERO reviews because 1) I'm tired of misleading 5 star reviews when the book actually sucks and 2) it uses one of my fave POVs: woman unknowingly married to serial killer.
I actually think it would make a great movie or Netflix series. There's a lot of potential and entertainment value with this book. And the setting would be beautiful. It really has a bit of everything. I can just picture the final scene now...
The writing quality was fine. Didn't bother me and it was well-paced. Compact chapters that kept the storyline moving. A nice read for a chilly winter night. Solid 3 stars. The Honda Civic of mystery thrillers.
PROS AND CONS
Pros: Interesting premise and POV, well-paced, weirdly cute Cons: Obvious ending, no real mystery or big reveal (I didn't mind though, but I know this is very important to some people)
4⭐ Genre ~ domestic thriller Series ~ The Final Hunt #1 Setting ~ Alaska Publication date ~ June 7, 2022 Est Page Count ~ 349 Audio length ~ 7 hours 13 minutes Narrator ~ Stacey Glemboski POV ~ multiple 3rd Featuring ~ serial killer, police procedural
I do enjoy a story that reveals secrets after a person is gone and John's secret is a doosey.
Cameron finds evidence that her husband, John, is apparently a serial killer known as The Teacher Killer. Once she tells the police and word gets out of her husbands crimes, she is being shunned and considered an accomplice. The media is relentless, she might not be able to sell her house for the $3.3 mil she needs and she loses all of her patients at her dental practice. I, like the rest of the world, have to wonder how the wife did not know.
The prologue is about John's death, then the first chapter skips ahead 3 months to Cameron's discovery. I never really got the whole grieving widow vibe since we go right in to the nitty gritty of both the police and her own investigation.
She is convinced he is not really dead, so she embarks on The Final Hunt to Alaska in hopes of finding answers. Winter in Alaska was described so well that I felt like I was freezing my katookas off while they were ice fishing and tenting on a lake (do people really do that? no thank you.)
Tanner was a thorough detective and did a great job investigating. Dane was an alright cop too, his actions a bit far-fetched at the end though.
Overall, I found this to be a great thriller that kept me intrigued throughout with some good secrets and twists. Thinking back I am like duh, how did I not figure the big reveal out, as it's pretty obvious. I don't care for insta~love in my thrillers though.
This is my first time with this author and I'd be delighted to read or listen her work again and again. I'm excited to read the next in the series, The Last Hunt.
Narration notes: A quick and easy listen. Stacey Glemboski did a fantastic job keeping me engaged throughout the whole story.
*Thanks to OrangeSky Audio, Audrey J. Cole and NetGalley for the advance audiobook. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review*
Another exciting and frustratingly difficult to put down standalone novel from Audrey J. Cole. The Final Hunt goes back and forth between Seattle and the bitter frozen wilderness of Alaska. This was a thrilling and action packed ride with well developed and multi-dimensional characters. The story begins when main character Cameron discovers pictures of John, her recently deceased husband, in the act of murdering a woman in the very cabin she was - at that very moment - sitting in and had been seeking refuge to be close to him since he had been proclaimed deceased as a result of a (supposed) bear attack a few months prior. Simon, best friend and law partner, had even been with him and bore witness to hearing his horrendous screams of excruciating pain as he was being mauled to death. So, why would she have had any reason to think differently about his untimely and horrendously tragic demise? Now she knows he is the serial killer who has been dubbed "The Teacher Killer" because of his string of teacher murders. Cameron is beyond pissed because she now knows he is still alive and she is determined to bring him down - especially after realizing she is now being looked at as his accomplice. She proves to be more resilient than she could have imagined as she flies her small plane all over the Alaskan tundra, faces off with all sorts of wild life, snow mobile accidents, and more. She is a woman on a mission to get justice and the her singleminded impassioned journey is inspiring. Even though may be considered somewhat predictable by some, the thrilling nonstop action - resulting from the unpredictability of the bitter cold and harsh outdoor elements - makes up for it in spades. I will definitely be reading more novels by Ms. Cole. Recommend.
Three months ago, Cameron Prescott’s husband, John, was killed in a bear attack while hunting with his best friend, Simon Castelli. Mourning his death, she’s taken to spending every weekend at his cabin in the Northern Cascades. Until the day she discovered a memory card holding proof that her husband wasn’t the sweet, loving man she thought she’d been married to for ten years, but a monster instead. Because on her computer she comes face-to-face with photos of him with a dead woman.
She immediately takes the information to the Seattle Police Department where she is told by Detective Tanner Mulholland that her husband is suspected of being The Teacher Killer and the woman was just one of his known victims. He also breaks it to her that he will be holding a press conference to alert the public to the news that they would be posthumously charging her dead husband. Within hours the press are pounding down her door. With their attention she loses her reputation and is on the brink of losing her dental practice. And her house isn’t far behind.
But Cameron is increasingly afraid that John didn’t die in that bear attack after all. When the police ignore her warnings and she sees her life going up in smoke, she decides to do something about it instead. Because if he isn’t dead then he could still be killing. And who wants that on their conscience? She is determined to find out for sure.
I just finished The Final Hunt and I’m not really sure what to make of it. On one hand I positively inhaled the book, but on the other I was left seeing it as a slightly melodramatic story propelled by coincidence. One that was darn good and which I could even see being adapted and shown up on the silver screen. But it did walk into the realm of requiring the reader to suspend disbelief (which I was happy to do).
Starting with the character of Cameron, we meet her after her husband has died in the wilds of the Northwest and she’s taking that death badly. But perhaps I expected her to not swing in the opposite extreme once she learns who her husband really was. And she’s oddly capable of operating within a situation that would be otherwise near impossible to the normal human being. Through her determination, however, we come to meet a resilient, strong woman who, if anyone could pull it all off, would be able to tackle this feat.
So I found myself slightly confused about whether the story was altogether believable. Even if it isn’t, however, what’s really wrong with that? A plot driven to the extremes, it was full of a mind-blowing twist that took this novel in an entirely new direction, which had me clapping my hands for the author. While I had a mild inkling about what it was, I second-guessed myself out of believing it. Hopefully, you won’t see it at all (please don’t let this deter you from reading this easy, fast-paced, addictive read).
None of this kept me from relishing the words on the page that grabbed me from the start and had me riveted until the very last one. This was the first book by Audrey J. Cole that I’ve read, but it certainly won’t be the last. And I just love discovering new first-rate authors. Don’t you? Rating of 4.5 stars.
Cameron’s husband John went missing while hunting. His body was never found by his friend said he heard a bear and John screaming. Everyone believes John was killed by a bear. Devastated Cameron makes a shocking discovery - photos. But these photos are not captured memories of happier times. No these are trophy photos - picture proof of John's involvement in the murders of women in Seattle.
Now, Cameron is being dragged through the mud. How could she be married to a serial killer and not know it? Her dental business is gone, and she is having trouble selling their home.
What's a girl to do?
This was an enjoyable listen, and I enjoyed the narrator but found the book to be predictable in parts and nothing in this really shocked me. I would put this in my good not great pile. It's one that while I enjoyed listening to it, I most likely will forget it in months to come.
Many are enjoying this more than I did, so please seek out their reviews as well.
Thank you to OrangeSky Audio and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
Isn’t it just the best feeling to find a new to me author that you absolutely love?? 🥳 I read my first @audreyjcole book last year and loved it!! I just finished The Final Hunt and it was fantastic!! In fact so fantastic that I am adding her to my favorite author shelf!! ❤️ See some of my favorites on my shelf in this photo!! 😍Okay why did I love this???
Your darling husband that you adore is mauled to death ☠️ by a bear.🐻… OMG right?? You are mourning him… 😩…you go to his isolated hunting cabin that he loved so much… you just want to feel close to him… and remember the good times. 🥺
Well imagine your surprise when you find some photos… of hubby… and some dead girls… 😳WHAT??!! OMG is John really a serial killer?! 🤔 Nooo… say it isn’t so!!! 😳…
This started out with a bang 💥💥💥 It didn’t let up the entire time. As Cameron tries to find out the truth. Was she really married to a killer?? Or does someone want her to think that?! 😬
This is fast paced and full of twists. I enjoyed every minute of it!! Five fantastic stars!! I can’t wait to read the rest of @audreyjcole ‘s backlist!! 😍
What would you do if you discovered your spouse is a notorious serial killer?
After Cameron’s husband John disappears and is believed killed in a bear attack while on a hunting trip, she finds photos linking him to a crime. Soon it is discovered he was linked to multiple murders over many years, the notorious “Teacher Killer.” The author did an excellent job of showing the impact her husband’s crimes had on Cameron, who loses not only her home, but also her successful dental practice. The invasive pressure of the news media was unrelenting.
But as time goes by, Cameron begins to worry John may not really be dead. Worse, the investigators are turning on her, believing she may have helped him. For the sake of other women out there who could fall victim to him, she goes up to Alaska, where there have been two recent murders and where she believes he may own property, and looks for him.
This was a quick, easy read with great pacing and vivid descriptions. I LOVED the Alaskan setting, the action scenes flying a plane in the wilderness and hiking in the snow, and enjoyed the characters. This was a straightforward read without curveballs, however I found the book absolutely enjoyable for what it was, a sharp, well-paced thriller with a unique setting. 5/5 stars.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary ARC copy of this book from BooksGoSocial and NetGalley for review purposes.
This is my first time reading a book by this author, however, I enjoyed it. Such a crazy turn of events and eye opening to realize some people you're so close to you might not completely know. I did think some of the twists in the story was predictable but I still enjoyed it. The premise was interesting, but got way more interesting when the main character went to Alaska on the hunt to find her husband. And that ending, wow!!! Good read!
I received this ARC from NetGalley and the publishers to read and review. All statements above are my true opinion after reading this book.
A lovely thriller to sink my teeth into (wink wink)!
This was right up my alley - serial killer, Alaskan wilderness, log cabins- I love it all!
The story was easy to follow, I devoured the book in one day, I just could not put it down. I loved the atmosphere it created!
The characters were relatable, the storyline full of all kinds of different turns and overall - a very enjoyable book. I would not call it an edge-of-the-seat thriller, but it was great in its own way.
I guessed the accomplice very early on, but that did not take away from the enjoyment of reading.
Overall, strong 4 stars. Read during the UK heatwave 2022, so this book was great to cool me down :)
Cameron Prescott's husband John disappeared while hunting, presumed dead from a bear attack. She finds evidence in his cabin in northern Washington State implicating him in a series of murders by a perpetrator known as "The Teacher Killer". Because of all the media attention and questions about her role in the murders, Cameron's reputation is destroyed. She has to close her dental practice and is on the brink of losing her home.
Book 2 in this series is publishing later this month (June 2024) and naturally I grabbed it from Netgalley's Read Now section so I thought I'd better move on this one.
I found this book easy to read and the pages flew by. Cameron is a strong female character but there was something about her that niggled at the back of my mind, especially as more and more was revealed about her back story. I can't pin it down so maybe the second book will clarify what's bothering me. This was an enjoyable book but you need to take it with a grain of salt and don't overthink it. For the second time in as many books, a little romance gets tossed into the mix. Totally unnecessary in my opinion. Despite my misgivings I give this 3.5 Stars rounded up!
I'm super embarrassed to confess that this is my oldest outstanding Netgalley book, published June 7, 2022. Even more embarrassing is the fact that I still have another 20 titles from 2022 to read.
My thanks for an ARC of this novel and apologies for the late review to BooksGoSocial via Netgalley. All opinions expressed are my own.
A standalone thriller, The Final Hunt by Audrey J Cole has a feisty female protagonist. Can life get much worse for Cameron after her husband John disappears whilst out hunting and is presumed killed by bears? She then discovers a USB stick with photos and the horrific realisation that John may have been in fact a serial killer. As she loses her livelihood as a dentist and her home, the horrible truth is exposed. So, she decides to flee to an off-grid hunting cabin in the untamed Alaskan wilderness. As the police investigate her for possible collusion, Cameron investigates what else was kept from her. With dark secrets revealed and building tension comes an enjoyable wilderness action thriller with a three star read rating. With thanks to Books Go Social and the author, for an uncorrected advanced reader copy for review purposes. As always, the opinions herein are totally my own and freely given.
Thank you Netgalley and OrangeSky Audio for the opportunity to listen to this arc audiobook.
Cameron discovers her husband, John, is the Teacher Serial Killer. She makes some horrific discoveries about his crimes and is convinced he is hiding out in Alaska. She travels to Alaska to confront him, after she also become a suspect as an accomplice to her husbands murderous ways.
This book has a good storyline and a well written plot line. I felt there could have been a bit more to actually uncovering and solving this crime. The narrator was excellent and kept a good pace while still keeping you interested.
I did enjoy this book and loved the Alaska setting. Definitely an Author to watch!
This was an entertaining read. The first 85% was interesting and decently paced. I found it to be engaging and a fast read.
However, around the 85% mark there is a shift in the story. Something happens and it's as if the author wanted to increase the pacing to show how dangerous something was. Unfortunately, this change made for a few unbelievable things to happen in a very short period of time. It was just too much all once and I found it very difficult to suspend my disbelief as one thing after another happened. I found myself eye-rolling towards the end of this series of events.
Aside from that short section and one other addition right at the end, I found the book to be a really good read. I think if the book had continued on its path and been consistent to the end, I would have loved it. As it stands, I still enjoyed the story and think it's worth a read. I would recommend giving this one a try. Maybe that bit won't bother you and you'll find it exciting instead of over-the-top.
I listened to the audio of this one and would recommend it. I thought the narration by Stacey Glemboski was very well done.
3.5 stars.

This domestic suspense might make you appreciate your husband a little more. Cameron and John are a perfect couple. One of those that we read about often. John dies and Cameron is heartbroken…pretty common. But then Cameron finds John’s dirty secrets and this story takes off!
It makes you think. Would you know if your partner was a serial killer? We’ve seen this scenario in real-life many times. And looking from the outside in, how could someone miss the clues? It looks so obvious. But from Cameron’s perspective, maybe it isn’t that easy.
I’ve never read a book by this author and this looked like the perfect one to try. The enticing cover and description compelled me to hit the request button. Thank you to OrangeSky Audio for providing this complimentary copy through NetGalley. This review is my honest opinion.
Even though I felt most of the twists were predictable, the narration was great and the story was suspenseful and interesting. I was rooting for Cameron throughout her evil acts!
Enjoyable story line as we follow Cameron as she discovers not only her husband's death by bear attack, but also seems to lose everything as it is found that her dearly beloved husband was a serial killer.
Cameron is not sure that hubbie, John, has bitten the dust since his body was never found. This sets Cameron on a search in an off the grid town in Alaska where John had a cabin. The usual predicaments happen, but the story does keep the reader going and wondering is Cameron will come out the winner when life seems to have dealt her the losing cars.
Thank you to Audrey J. Cole, Rainer Publishing, and NetGalley for a copy of this story.
This one sounded so good, so I had to pick it up! I would say it lived up to expectations, but there weren’t any super surprising twists. It was just a good story about a woman who finds out her husband is a serial killer and has to face the public and law enforcement accusing her of being involved.
She also goes out in search of him. He is presumed dead, but she doesn’t believe it. It’s a hunt for revenge. I can’t say too much more without spoiling it, but it was a very good story. Very fast paced.
Thanks to NetGalley & BooksGoSocial for an eARC of this book. The following review is my honest reflection on the text provided.
The Final Hunt is a cookie-cutter mystery-thriller with minimal deviations from what's to be expected. But then, when I thought I wasn't enjoying myself, Cole threw in a totally random and extreme instalove to ensure I was as miserable as possible.
Not a single character is believable. Cameron is a weird mix of cold, meticulous killer and completely oblivious to her surroundings. John is definitely not a serial killer. Maybe I would believe a serial rapist but not someone who would get away with serious crime for a week, let alone years. The entire scenario was predictable from the first chapter. Not even chapter - the prologue gives the game away.
The Final Hunt made me want to go to Alaska. That's about it.
Review originally posted here on Britt's Book Blurbs.
My workload tends to slow down around this time of year (Thanksgiving to New Years), so I’ve had some extra time on my hands and have spent some time cleaning out my to-read list. I am shocked (and kind of embarrassed) at how long it has become. So, my 2024 reading challenge is to finally make time to get to some of the really great stuff that has been on my list for a long time. This one has been on my list since Jul2022, so not too long and a really good choice!
The book summary is pretty vague and basically just introduces the primary storyline of Cameron Prescott, a Seattle dentist, discovering that three months after that her husband, John, was supposedly killed by a bear was also being investigated as the Teacher Killer, who was suspected of killing more than a dozen women. The detective on the Teacher Killer case, Detective Tanner Mulholland, starts looking into whether or not Cameron knew and/or abetted her husband in the murders. There is also another storyline of Tanner discovering that Cameron’s first husband died of suicide and Tanner suspects that it may not have been suicide. The man is like a dog with bone!
The media frenzy soon drives Cameron from both her dental practice as well as her home and up to AK where Cameron believes John is still alive after faking his death and where he has started to kill again. It’s the dead of winter in AK, so lots of snow, some blizzards, freezing temps, wildlife, and even an avalanche. I love stories set in AK for these exact reasons. Anyway, the story is fast-paced and at 272pgs, the end comes pretty quick in a VERY satisfying end. WHOO YA!!! Karma is a &!^%# and the white horse she rode in on.
Initially, this story kind of reminded me of the first installment of the Stillhouse Lake series where an unsuspecting wife suddenly discovers that her husband is a serial killer. LOVE THAT SERIES!!! However, it wasn’t long before I discovered that this story is very different. However, like the Gwen Proctor character that Rachel Caine created in the Stillhouse Lake series, Audrey J Cole’s Cameron Prescott goes from mild mannered wife and dentist to a bad@$$ warrior and hunter. WOO HOO!!! LOVE CAMERON!!!
I feel so bad giving this one star and let me just say I do think there's an audience for this book, but it's not me. I think readers who thought Karin Slaughters' Pretty Girls was too much gore would like this because the premise is so similar but the content isn’t nearly as heavy or disturbing. The chapters are short and fast-paced, easily readable in one sitting.
This book delivers exactly what the synopsis promises. John disappears and is presumed dead after a bear attack. Months later, his wife Cameron finds damning images on an SD card that prove John to be a locally infamous serial killer. She's convinced he's still alive and sets off to hunt him down to make him pay for what hes done.
Not much happens outside of what we're already told in the synopsis. I found 0 elements in this book to be surprising. You can easily tell exactly how this is going to end after reading the first few chapters. I will say the only thing that threw me off guard was the incredibly fast insta-love thrown in.
The characters themselves felt underdeveloped which led to me not caring and the stakes not feeling that high. I don't feel like we got to know John or what his and Cameron's relationship was like before he disappeared. Some background on them as people and their relationship with each other would have made me more invested in Cameron's decisions and motives and actually understand where she was coming from. All the emotion felt surface level to me.
My favorite mystery thrillers are full of suspense, intrigue, and twists and turns. Overall, this didn't deliver what I was hoping for.
thank you to the publisher & Netgalley for kindly providing an arc for early review
“After John disappeared while hunting - presumed dead from a bear attack - Cameron found the crime photos. His role in the recent Seattle serial murders was discovered.” GR
I listened to this while at work and it was perfect to help me get through a busy day. While it didn’t have me on the edge of my seat it was still extremely entertaining. It kept me questioning where the story was going and what exactly was going on. While I think the reveal was obvious it didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment. I think the author knew or hoped the reader would already assume the reveal and making it a true ‘twist’ is not what they were going for. I would definitely recommend this one but as always with thrillers the less you know the better! So definitely go into this one without reading too much into it.
I really liked Cameron’s character and how her character developed throughout the story. This story took place in several different locations and Cameron had to learn to adapt to each one. The author did a great job of describing scenery making you feel as though you were actually up in the mountains or out in the forest. The author also did a great job explaining Cameron’s character and giving enough background so the reader can believe/know everything Cameron is truly capable of.
If you plan on listening/reading this one, clear your schedule! You're going to want to finish it in a day like I did.
Thank you so much @orangeskyaudio for the #gifted copy on #netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
After getting the news that Cameron's husband is presumably dead being attacked by a bear while away hunting, while going through some of his things, she chances upon some photos of him committing some gristly murders (with him in the pictures). Soon she realizes her husband was the famed serial murderer that had never be identified or caught, the "Teacher Killer".
As the police start to investigate the information she gives them, the information leaks about her husband to the public, and her own reputation now is involved. Did she know this about her husband? How did she NOT know that she was married to a serial killer? Did she have a part in some kind of cover-up? Next thing she knows, her dental practice is going downhill and has no clients, she is under suspicion by the lead investigator and being investigated herself, and her financials are all but ruined as her husband cashed out the life insurance policy without her knowing.
Having a pilot's license, she heads off to Alaska to find the answers she seeks. She has to solve one nagging question... if he was able to keep his life as a serial murderer secret, is there more secrets to be discovered? Might he still be alive?
Speaking of secrets, she does have a huge one herself. Her secret, did it die with him, or, if the secret is still alive and ready to be exposed, who will expose it?
Great storyline. Easy read and listen. Perfect pace. Satisfying ending. Clean mystery. No foul language or sex. That being said, it doesn't really have any unbelievable OMGosh moments, in fact, the reader might guess what might happen next. Still, a very enjoyable read! This was first time reading this author, and will be checking out more of her work now if this is indication of how she writes (I guess I don't always need a wow factor, I just need to enjoy the journey).
Narrator was Stacey Glemboski, she carried the narration and character voices well. Pleasant, easy to listen to voice.
4 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Recommended My thanks to NetGalley, OrangeSkyAudio, and Audrey J. Cole for an AAC in exchange for my honest review.
Questions to ponder... What if you were married to a serial killer? Would you know it? Could he\she be so good at covering their double life that you would not have a clue? The Final Hunt by Audrey J Cole is about this exact situation.
Synopsis: Cameron is grieving her husband John's death. John was recently killed in a hunting incident. Cameron goes to John's hunting cabin to feel close to him and mourn his death. While there, she finds gruesome "trophy" photographs John took posing with his deceased female victims. Cameron is devastated and turns the evidence over to the police.
The community and media quickly become brutal to Cameron. They hint that Cameron could have been John's accomplice. How can one ever recover from this devastating situation? Your life would never be the same.
As crazy as it sounds, this scenario has actually happened. For example, BTK's family had no idea he was a serial killer. He was "THAT" good at living a duel lifestyle.
The Final Hunt is exceptionally interesting and well written. The ending had some tiny holes in it, but I still enjoyed the book. It is a solid 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ read. It will be published June 7th.
Thank you NetGalley and BooksGoSocial, for allowing me to review this exciting new book. I appreciate your kindness. I look forward to reading more from Audrey J Cole.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for eARC copy to read and review!
Coming June 7, 2022
I liked this story. It has short chapters which kept me turning pages in a rush. Super quick read I devoured in a day. I can agree with other reviews: I thought it was easy to guess what was coming but it was nice to have a read with reliable characters/ narrative so I didn't mind it. Several moments were a little unbelievable 🙃 but I don't think it took too much away from the story, I was still interested in the outcome. Overall, good book
Wow. This was brilliant. I was so drawn In with the storyline and the characters. Despite having a pretty good idea of what had gone down I was still gripped to the story and didn't want to put it down. It was great to have such a strong, independent and determined female main character.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
If I had to describe this book with a sentence I’d say it was a mild read about some heinous crimes with a dash of mystery/suspense and as little answers as possible.
I loved the small chapters which were a contributing factor that helped with giving the illusion that the plot is fast paced. It was an okay read, kinda predictable and leaves a lot of questions without giving an answer. I’m more used to shocking revelation filled thrillers tho so if you’re into the mood for a light easy to read mystery/thriller that’s the one for you.
Thank you Netgalley and BooksGoSocial for the digital arc.
What would you do if you found out you were married to a monster?
We begin with a grizzly death in snowy conditions. Pun intended. John gets eaten by a bear. His friend and law partner Simon is nearby and devastated.
We are then introduced to Cameron, John’s wife. It’s been a few months and she’s trying to come to terms with her loss. They live in the city but John kept this cabin in the boonies for hunting weekends.
Cameron is spending time at the cabin after John’s death. She stumbles upon an SD card, assuming it will be more memories of the two of them and their life together so she gets cozy with some wine to reminisce, but to her shock and horror, it’s not family photos. It’s evidence of especially heinous crimes, to borrow a saying. She is the widow of a serial killer.. but we also find out that she herself is harboring a secret.
That’s just where we start. She does the right thing and hands the evidence over to police, for all the good that does her. She’s absolutely going THROUGH it. Her dental practice is going under because of the bad press and she stumbles across some mystery debts. She’s had enough so she’s going to get to the bottom of it. She does what any of us would do. She gets in her plane and flies somewhere to investigate!
This has some good twists and turns. It’s not exactly the most unpredictable story in the world. I could kind of see where it was going from the start but I still enjoyed the journey. The narration was great and I loved the setting of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. I could see it in my mind’s eye. Definitely and fun and quick read.
Thanks to NetGalley and OrangeSky Audio for the chance to listen to this early in exchange for an honest review.
