Boxes—rigid rectangular containers usually made of wood, metal, or cardboard. But what happens when boxes become more than the boring definition they’re given? When the contents become more important than their exteriors and entire journeys center around them… What happens when a box becomes your entire world?
Eight different authors deliver a genre-mashup anthology that includes dark fantasy, post-apocalyptic, game-lit, and horror short stories all centered around the same topic—a mystery box. The collection will rocket you into a space-themed video game, throw you into a fantasy world filled with undead, have you gritting your teeth in a barren, near-future wasteland, and spin you headfirst on a psychedelic trip through time. Discover a diverse cast of characters who are guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page.
Authors include: Damien Hanson, Cali Burem, Amy Johnson, Dean Hanson, Joseph Phelps, Nolan Locke, S. McC, and A.E. Pole
Damien Hanson is an American vet who lives in Korea. This prevents him from meeting with many of his writer friends and makes him sad. You know what makes him happy though? Reviews! Send them fast and send them often.
He likes to game, read and write. Don't we all? If he isn't teaching at the university or at his academy you can generally find him on his laptop plocking away at keys, playing games with his son, or else consuming his next novel via his kindle.
I didn't know what to expect, but I didn't expect to be moved to tears and chilled to the bone by some of the stories. Devils, Dystopian worlds, action and suspense and an almost stream of consciousness type of story all work around the concept of a box, and they all are so cleverly done. The stories by Amy Johnson, S.McC and Cali Burem really stood out for me, as they are the genres I would normally read and they were so good I couldn't give the anthology any less than 5 stars!
What better way to get a taste of an author’s writing, than by reading a tapas of seasonings they all add to their genres.” I thoroughly enjoyed this Anthology of stories taking me across so many genres. A fantastic read, this is a great introduction to what the reader can expect from the author and their chosen stories going forward. A wonderful baptism of fire so to speak. As I was new to many of these genres only eighteen months ago, and somewhat slow to get into them, I really think this is an amazing starting point/ introduction to the intensity and quality of each author's ability and style. It gives me just enough to whet my appetite, in bite-size pieces. This book is like a wine tasting experience, you either sip, gulp, or sip again. Like most things in life, the taste gets better the more you get into the depth of the flavour. There is just enough to tempt you to keep going or change your mind. As I go through my journey of discovering the different genres, I am often amazed at how a subject I wouldn’t have picked up previously can be turned by the author's quality of telling a story and convinces me I have to read them through to the end. These authors have all convinced me without a doubt that all their books are more than worth reading. I would definitely say, Mystery Box, is a great way to peak one’s curiosity. Short stories can be much enjoyment to those who can’t retain long complicated plots in their memories. They are such a gift. Whether it's blood and gore, dark fantasy, game-lit, a baren cruel wasteland and the sheer love and determination to fulfil a promise, the fantasy world of the undead, or a trip through time, every topic that is touched on reels you in. A truly wonderful introduction to all genres covered. I really couldn’t help but enjoy and respect the writers’ messages. A must-read you anyone looking to explore what lies beneath multiple genres and educate how much more there is to it. I have read a few Anthologies lately for charity, mainly, this is by far the best. Easily a five-star rated edition.
I haven't read a lot of anthologies and I think this is my second one. I have to say, I love the cover which reflects the theme of all the short stories (a mystery box). As I began reading, I was pleasantly surprised. It was a good read full of stories from different fantasy, dystopian and science fiction worlds. My favourites stories were Amy Johnson, S.McC and Cali Burem. These not only captivated me but also tore me apart.
A great mix of emotion, action, adventure and enigma - I highly reccommend.
There is a lot of variety here and I like that because I'm the kind of guy who likes to read lots of different types of genres. Also there is a fun surprise at the end when you find out that one of the authors is a 10 year old. You wouldn't expect that by reading his story
