Jake's family ties have turned to cuffs.

Born with the ability to fragment his body at a molecular level, Jake Lucas has devoted his life to his uncle's supervillain gang. When he's captured by superheroes, he's certain his life is over at only sixteen.

To Jake's surprise, he doesn't end up in prison but at Camp Sable: an intervention project for at-risk super powered teens. Jake's not interested in rehabilitation. As far as he's concerned, the camp mentors are just a barrier between him and his true family, the Sand Fox gang.

Forced to work alongside the likewise screwed up duo of fire-powered Marco and electricity manipulator Laleh, Jake waits for the perfect escape opportunity. Having friends and the chance at a real family is more appealing than Jake originally thought, but going soft can cost a supervillain his life. Jake soon finds the forces fighting to control his life threatening to tear him apart.

Will Jake choose to remain the villain his uncle made him, or become the hero his new friends think he can be?

A Young Adult Superhero series featuring found family, friendship, and one superpowered ferret.

We were blessed to receive an advanced readers copy of "Power On." My 16 y.o. daughter read the book and presented this review:
"I loved this book! It’s far enough from the classic hero story to keep you guessing. However, it’s not so far that you can’t understand the plot. The mixture of humor and action is outstanding!
The book has a wonderful incorporation of real life situations, realistic personalities, and super powers. None of the separate elements overpower the others.
Frankly, this is one of the best super-teen books I’ve ever read."

New series in the world of the Supervillain Rehabilitation Project. This one with a YA twist. Builds off the original series, but can be read independently.

Let’s just read all these superhero books out of publication order, shall we? 😂 Because that seems to be how it’s going! Out of all of the books in this universe I was most excited to read this YA series and this first book did not disappoint!

I love how each of the kids come from different places and therefore have different problems and personalities from each other which I, shamefully, didn’t think they’d have for some stupid reason? (Why would I think that?!?! 🤦🏼‍♀️) Not sure why I thought that, but here we are, heh. I like all the kids but Jake definitely stole my heart and I am desperately hoping for a happy ending for this young man as I feel his struggles and pain and craving for belonging so, so much it hurts and his confession to Fade at the end broke my heart. 😭😭 Which is why I read this book in two days; I just had to know what was going to happen to him! And even though I don’t know Prism and Fade (because, again, I read these books out of order) I really like their hearts for these kids and seeing from their POVs.

Lots of action and character growth, and I can’t wait to see where the story goes from here!

Power On follows Jake, a teen supervillain who is captured by the Department of Super-Abled, or DOSA, and sent to an experimental camp for rehabilitation. There, Jake is counseled by two retired superheroes and learns to work as a team with the snobby princess, Laleh, and the mild-mannered, nerdy Marco. This unlikely cast of characters grows into a family and eventually, Jake, whose original goal was to escape as fast as possible, finds himself unwilling to leave. But his uncle, the leader of his old team, The Sand Foxes, has other plans that put not only Jake, but the whole team in danger.

Power On is a character-driven superhero story that focuses more on these superpowered characters’ humanity than their abilities. It’s the perfect story for anyone looking for stories about brainwashing, found families, or misunderstood teens.

A heartwarming story of found family

Love this mix of coming of age and finding a place to belong. Fade and Prism are back with a crew of teens learning to control their powers and work together. It's sweet to see them as parents with Ruby, but there are plenty of interesting problems to solve using super powers. But the deepest problems are solved with love.

I'm reading these all out of chronological order, lol, but I'm kinda glad I read Captured by a Supervillain and Engaged to a Supervillain first. Made the reveal in those a surprise. So I read this like it was a prequel. Anyway.

I'd thought these kids were like 11/12 for some reason, which was not super appealing to me 😅 and actually they're teens, with the MC being 16. I enjoyed that much more than 12 year olds. Sometimes Jake felt older or younger than 16, but that kinda made sense given his messed up background.

This book is kind of thin on plot and at times almost slow (maybe was my mood, though), mostly about Jake making friends and found family and getting up to shenanigans while deciding if he wants to get out of the gang life, but it was still fun and good and hey, the first book in like a week after sampling several that compelled me to keep going after the first couple chapters.

Characters who have been made to feel worthless and unwanted and find people who see, value, love, and want them is a trope that will hit me in the feels every time, and this one did that really well, even though it's just the start of Jake's journey. I teared up more than once. So this book gets five stars for giving me emotions.

(Also I'm having extra feels about bad and good things that happen in Captured and Engaged now with added context from this book. 😭🥹)

There is just something so fun about this author's superhero world that she has created over three series now.

This one picks up after the ending of the main series, and it was great to catch up with Fade, Prism, and the crew. Yet this book features new characters, a group of troubled, superpowered teens.

So much great character development, superhero action, and tension in this book! That ending had me at the edge of my seat!

Lots of fun. I bought another story that seems to follow up on the book, with the baby in this story a teenager. Can't wait to get to it.

These supervillains are ordinary teens caught in problems like any other -- just exacerbated by their super powers. And the expectations of the somewhat unreasonable adults in their lives.

Looking forward to reading more in the multiple branches of this universe.

Power On is the first book in H.L. Burke's newest superhero series. The supervillain Rescue Project follows three superpowered teens as they get sent to Camp Sable, a group home/training program for at risk teens with superpowers.

Jake is the main character and have to say I loved him so much. His dynamic with the other kids is great and the way he grows and changes over the course of the story is really nice as he learns to trust and open up to couple who runs the camp.

This series is also a direct sequel to Burke's previous series, The Supervillain Rehabilitation Project. This is what really excited me about this book. The couple that run the camp are Fade and Prism. We get to catch up with them and see their adorable daughter Ruby.

If you are a teen drawn to this YA series, you will be fine if you don't read the other books first.

If you are an adult who enjoyed the original SVR series, then let me assure you that everything you loved is back and better. Your favorite characters, the humor, and the wonderfully constructed plotlines. Don't let the YA label hold you back.

Who am I kidding. If you read the original SVR series you had this preordered as soon as you heard about it.

*I was honored to read an early version of this book. My opinions are my own and were reached honestly.*

I loved this book so much. It helps that it provided a much-needed distraction from an earache several nights in a row, but yeah. It's so good. I enjoyed seeing a new generation of sables and getting to see Prism and Fade step into a mentor role. (Dad Fade is best Fade, FYI.) The new mains — Jake, Laleh, and Marco — are awesome, and I enjoyed getting to know them as well. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Fantastic book that I've already recommended to several people. This super fun, super fast paced superhero and supervillain YA novel kept me reading! (That’s a lot of supers!) I had no choice but to dive right in to book #2 so I could continue the adventure! Clean YA read appropriate for middle grade and up. Highly recommended!

As I'm many decades out of the loop regarding tales of super-heroes and super-villains, I can't offer knowledgeable comments on that aspect of the book. However, good writing is good writing. It doesn't matter whether the setting involves steampunk technology, magic, dragons, or people with amazing super powers. Burke consistently develops real, believable characters who draw you into their world and make you care about them. Her specialties are people and relationships, whatever the genre.

This story features three teens, all very different in their backgrounds as well as their special abilities. Despite their differences, all are isolated in some way, in need of friends as well as mentoring and parental guidance. Besides developing their talents, they need to learn to trust. They do have a few hair-raising adventures in the process.

Can’t Wait To See What’s Next

Fantastic start to this Supervillain Rescue series spin-off! I loved how Fade and Prism stayed true to their personalities from the main series and it was wonderful to see them in their new roles as camp directors. There were so many moments of character building and development with the teens in the program and I adored the sense of family built throughout the story.

My favorite story from the main series was Redeemed, which featured another teen character named Alma. So I truly enjoyed seeing other teens find their way into Prism’s care. It was also great to see the development between Fade and Jake. If you love character growth and emotional stories, you definitely have to check this book out! And don’t forget your tissues!

This first book in a spin off series of the Supervillain Rehabillitation Project has all the heart and humour I've come to expect from the author. You don't need to be familiar with the earlier books to enjoy this one, but for those who have it's a great chance to catch up with some old friends who pop up throughout the story. Timeline wise this story takes place before "Reunion" and in retrospect "Reunion" does have some slight spoilers for this (and possibly the next) book.

"Power On" was written with a YA audience in mind (so there's not gore, sex or other highly 'adult' moments) but as with all good writing anyone of any age can enjoy this book.

Power On was such a fun story I finished it in one sitting. The characters were very likable. I rooted for Jake from the start and loved getting to see characters from the other series in here (you don't need to have read the other series). Baby Ruby was adorable. The plot was engaging, and the superpowers were creative and fun. I love the emphasis on family and being loved and lovable despite our faults or how others in the past have treated us.

I highly recommend the book and look forward to reading more in this series and Burke’s other superhero series.

Power On is a fun superhero story written for teens. It’s a easy read, with interesting characters, some of whom you learn to love, others you can’t help but hate.

Themes: family, found family, failure and forgiveness/redemption, friendship.

Overall, an enjoyable story and I plan to read the rest of the series.

Content warnings:
There are about a dozen or so mild cusses/vulgar terms used (d—-, jack—, cr*p, scr*w*d, etc.) and some superhero violence.

This is shaping up to be my favorite HL Burke series so far, and I'm only on book 1. It's fun getting "the continuing story" of Fade and Prism while also meeting a new generation of super heroes. I love that Burke has not fallen into the trap most "passing the torch" stories fall into where the old super heroes are somehow portrayed as not as good as the new ones or not as cool as we remember them. It's easier to love this new set of characters when it doesn't feel like they're actively shoving aside my old favorites.

Jake and Marco and Laleh are really fun new characters and I look forward to hanging out with them some more as they grow and learn.

To be honest, I wasn’t intrigued by the idea of a teen superhero book, so when I say this ended up being one of my favorite reads of the year, you can be just as surprised as I was. I *loved* this book. And now I'm gathering HL Burke’s other superhero books so I can binge them all at once.
.
Best things about this book? Found family. Characters who feel worthless being loved well and shown their value in the most heartwarming way. Retired married superheroes raising a baby and being absolutely adorable. Plus superpowers and adventure and ferrets!

Fun Read for Teens

HL Burke is one of my favorite authors.
Who doesn’t love a superhero?
Burke introduces us to three unlikely and very different sables or people with superpowers. All three are very different but share the commonality of being in trouble and on a course that could lead to supervillainy.
The trio are assigned to new parents Prism and Fade. Jake is the center of this story which explores loyalty and family, biological and found family.

I read this series out of order and had no trouble enjoying books 2 and 3, but I was happy to finally fill in this gap at the beginning! This is a funny, moving action story with a strong spine and a good heart.

Heroes Prism and Fade have retired from action to open Camp Sable to help superpowered teens at risk of turning bad or misusing their powers. They’re just waiting for their first charge when suddenly, they get three with very different backgrounds and needs. Jake is an underage member of his uncle’s supervillain gang who gets caught; Laleh is the rebellious daughter of a privileged super family; and Marco has suddenly developed fire powers, something his overstressed single mom can’t handle. Prism and Fade bring these three to their cabin in the Central Oregon pine woods to experience discipline, structure, training, and the good example of functional family life. After initial friction among the kids, they start to gel as a team, but Jake is keeping a secret that could put him and all of them in danger.

As with the other two books in the series, I really enjoyed the sweet and goofy moments of family life interspersed with the action. I also love how Fade, an ex-villain who is not a people person by any stretch, is a devoted family man who forms a genuine bond with Jake. And Prism introducing Jake to Star Wars was an unexpected highlight.

Highly recommended to fans of action comedy with heart!

I’m relatively new to reading kids Superhero stories and so was delighted when I had the chance to read “Power On”. This is very much a book for younger teens and handles the theme of being good versus not good very well.

Jake Lucas is hanging with the wrong crowd. Jake idolises his older brother Caleb who is well entrenched in the Sand Fox crime gang run by their Uncle Vic. On a mission together, the two brothers get separated and Jake ends up being sent to Camp Sable, a camp that has been set up to help troubled teenage ‘sables’ (humans with ‘super’ talents). Here he meets two other teens, Laleh and Marco, both younger and coming from very different backgrounds.

Young sable parents, Prism and Fade, are responsible for running the camp and instilling goodness into these three while training them to become Superhero Sables, not Supervillains.

Much of the story revolves around daily life at the Camp and each one of the three’s reactions, responses, and gradual development. Burke demonstrates the progression in each which makes the story a good learning experience. I would have enjoyed some more action, but I appreciate that I’m not the intended reader for the story.

The sable talents are inventive and make for fun reading and Burke does a good job establishing three very separate teens with each of their backstories and attributes.

It was a good read and I’m certain many young teens would find this enjoyable.

The older SVR books really hold up and are just as good as the new ones!

I came into this knowing Jake from the Supervillain Legacy Project books, so it was really neat seeing him grow up and make mistakes... to be a kid. I loved seeing the little pieces of who he will become even when he couldn't see those things in himself. I also loved Laleh, Marco, and Wherezit! I knew a bit about Laleh from Game On, so getting to know more about her was fun, and I absolutely love Marco! He is the sweetest cinnamon roll and must be protected! I love how the SVR books are so connected, but they have so many places you can jump in and get to know the characters without being confused.

This is a great story! I downloaded it when it was free but enjoyed it so much that I bought the next two as soon as I finished the first one. The characters are interesting and realistically developed, and their growth is portrayed well. I haven't read the main series, but now I'd like to.

My only complaint is that the book obviously has not been professionally edited. If not for the typos and grammar errors, I would have given it five stars. Still, that didn't spoil the story for me. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys superhero stories or YA action and adventure.

A fairly gentle start to a new YA series, in the same world as Redeemed and following the MCs Prism and Fade in their next venture. It would be helpful to read Redeemed first but noting it's darker than this series.

Likeable characters and themes of found-family and not needing to be squashed by who your family have made you or tried to make you. Also a pet ferret with invisibility powers. Why don't more superhero stories have powered pets? What's not to like?

A fun read. The idea of a teenager supper villian rehab camp is kind of fun. What do you get when you mix a villain who does want to be there, an accidental pyromaniac, and a daughter of one of the higher ups who doesn't want to go into the family business? A recipe for a few laughs, a few eye roles, and a little bit of danger.
