Shaye Eastly has never been in the presence of kings, or magic. In fact, she has never ventured further from her small village in the mortal kingdom of Nautia than the capital square. But when a stranger appears to help her evade the palace guards who’ve come to arrest her for suspected sorcery, Shaye must trust her new companion, Aydan, to keep her safe.
As they flee to Medeisia, the ancient land of sorcerers, Shaye is quickly wrapped up in a dangerous world with a target on her back as long-dormant abilities spark and a family history she’s never known begins to unravel before her. Meanwhile, Aydan’s wanted status and complicated relationship with the royal family leads them down a path they cannot turn from.
In the midst of imprisonment, torture, and rising political tension, Shaye and Aydan must rely on each other and decide if their feelings for one another can survive the horrors they endure, the implications that come with her growing power, and the family legacies that will follow them forever.
If you're looking for a riveting fantasy packed full of action, suspense, and loveable characters, then The Wayward Prince is exactly the book for you!
This book is by far one of my favorite reads of 2021. I think the highlight, for me, was in the amazing cast of characters. Not only were Shaye and Aydan fantastic, but the side characters were just as interesting and well-rounded. I often find myself getting characters mixed up when a cast is this size, but that wasn't the case for The Wayward Prince. Each character was unique and had their own backstories that made them just as loveable as the two main characters.
If you like romance with your magic and action, then The Wayward Prince has you covered. In fact, one thing I loved is that I didn't know exactly who I shipped Shaye with. One moment it would be Aydan, the prince, and the next it would be Stefan, the guard who was there for Shaye when she really needed someone. I don't want to say anything, but I will say this: there was a twist there!! I love a good twist and this book has it!!
As I mentioned earlier, there was tons of action. There were moments of reprieve where I enjoyed getting to know the characters better, but then BOOM! Something else would go down and I'd be right back on the edge of my seat. To say The Wayward Prince is exciting would be a tremendous understatement.
And finally, I want to comment the actual writing. It was so descriptive, yet concise. N.C. Hayes is definitely an author to keep an eye on as I'm sure this is just the first of many amazing books she will publish in her career.
I happily give The Wayward Prince 5/5 stars because to be honest, it was the perfect read for me.
~I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review~
This was an interesting book. The writing style is straightforward which makes for easy reading. My favorite parts of the book were Aydan and his posse. -I know that's not what they're actually called but in essence, that's what they felt like.- That aside, there is a lot more court intrigue than I was anticipating, but I felt it was handled well. I did feel bad for Shaye and the things she had to go through, and it was nice watching her agency grow throughout the story. There is a lot of magic in this book, though it never quite felt magical; more like just a convenience much like modern technology, capable of a great deal, but not given much thought or attention by those who utilize it. Still, I do feel lovers of high fantasy should give this book a read-through.
Through the eyes of Shaye, you are tossed into a world where sorcerers and humans are at war. She embodies anyone who has ever been dragged into a situation where you don't know what's going on or why, but you can't leave. You can feel the overwhelmingness as she learns that her life was a lie and total strangers know more about her family history than she does. She must trust these people in order to survive. The up and downs keep you hooked and then Shaye learns she's more special than she could ever dream and that's not necessarily a good thing.
There's a lovely will-they, won't-they romance, plus a side character family that reminds me so much of the loveable bunch Sarah J. Maas made in A Court of Thorn and Roses series.
This is an easy read. I sailed through it like binge-watching my favorite shows on Netflix. It keeps you hungry for more and more and just BOOM! It's done? What?! There are at least one, two, fourteen chapters left, right? I audibly gasped as I swiped to the next page to find the story was over. Thank goodness a sequel has been announced because I am not done reading about this world and its characters!
Shaye Eastly has lived a very non-magical life with her farmer uncle while they eked out a very small life together. Both seemed pleased enough with this life until a stranger appears saying he is here to protect her from soldiers of the mortal realm. Her uncle sends Shaye with Aydan, whom she soon finds is a sorcerer. From here everything she has ever known is quickly called into question. Did the magic wielders want something from her? Were they as evil as they were always said to be when he had just saved her from soldiers? However, it is not just the mortals who are distrustful of sorcerers, it would seem. They crossed over at a bad part of the kingdom for the Wayward Prince and daughter of one who was once the king's best friend and advisor. Will imprisonment and torture of one be enough to quell the blossoming feelings?
I received a physical copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. I loved the cover on this book as much as the title. It just gives off vibes of a book you want to impulse pick up and buy. I will start by saying if you are a fan of fantasy young adult romances this is one for you. It is a slow burn romance with characters in their 20s (Yes, Ayden is much older, but that is only because of the whole immortal thing).
The book is amazing from start to finish, although there is still plenty to gather at the end. While the main part of this book was accomplished I truly hope I get to read the next in this series. I truly have no complaints on it. I have to say that I didn't particularly like Stephen at any point, so when the result for his section of the story happened I can't say I was particularly upset.
This book has magic, betrayal, and romance. What more could you ask for? I am sure that there are wonderful and interesting things in store for our characters in the next book and I hope I get to find out!
