One of my very favorites. It's one of the reason why I simply love reading her books. The character building in this book is phenomenal. It's sucks you in from the very beginning to the very end. A good measure of intrigue and romance. It's a regency novel in where it's starts with an arrange marriage that leads to a rise to power and a sweet revenge.

La Flamme by Constance O’Banyon (1995) is an intriguing tale of an estranged marriage and betrayal.

♦️England and France 1630s.

♦️King Charles commands the wedding between Sabine, the 14 year old daughter of the Earl of Woodbridge, and Garreth Blackthorn, Duke of Balmarough... he’s 20. She finds him charming.., puppy love! He takes pity on the young girl with the limp.(She’s to live with her father until she is 18, and old enough to consummate the marriage.)

♦️Then disaster strikes, Garreth’s men descend on the castle, killing many. Believing he betrayed her, Sabine barely escapes with her life, and manages to flee to France along with her young brother.

♦️Sabine is sworn to vengance! Was it possible to love when one hated?

♦️As the years pass Sabine becomes a sensual provocative French actress known as La Flamme…🔥💃.., because of her beauty and glorious red hair. Disguised, she approaches the husband she’s never actually known… determined to destroy him.

♦️❤️Did he truly betray her? Will she actually hurt herself in hurting the man she loves? He falls hard for La Flamme.

♦️Plenty of misunderstanding and mistrust as O’Banyon gives us sharply drawn characters. Alas, romance between Sabine and Garreth happens only after 200 pages and it was in brief tepid scenes. Nevertheless, a good revenge read.

❤Another winner!

Estranged marriage, 2nd change, love triangle are my faves HR's plots and all in this book. I like COB books esp. when the heroines are strong willed, badass and yet not arrogance.

My 2nd book from COB that I rated 5 stars besides Lavender Lies which I adored. Pls make more books like Lavender Lies. ❤🙏🌿

This is more historical fiction than romance and the romance really only started 200 pages in. I still enjoyed it though! It does have some of the trappings of older romances and the sex scenes were more purple prose-y than steamy.
