You’ll love Volume Four in The Monroe Doctrine saga because this one strikes close to home and we must all be prepared for when fiction becomes our reality.
I am really enjoying this series, but Volume IV had me struggling to maintain my interest. It seems the authors really concentrated on a non stop description of military technology, much like Clancy’s first novels. The authors have a tremendous grasp of strategies and weapons systems, but in the end, the non stop describing of missilery, radars, and technology wore me out.
IMHO, the most gripping stories in this genre of fiction are those that focus on those who live and die, not those that focus on arcane technology. As a result, I lost interest in the story, before the story was over!
In a nutshell, focus on the storytelling by making us care about the good and bad guys living, and dying, in this war. Balance the mix of war fighting technology with characters we can love and hate.
Once again a tour de force showing the possible and likely horrors of future war. The reader just gets to know a character and empathise with him/her when "bang!" that character is gone. That, more than anything else, demonstrates how horrendous war can be. Brilliantly written and despite all of the death and destruction, totally gripping (for me at least).
Monroe Doctrine. Volume IV. James Rosone, Alex Aaronson
Another stupendous read in this series. Chinia has initially controlled the fighting in Russia. Their ground forces greatly outnumber American and NATO troops. Russian leadership is still very Leary of German NATO troops. The fighting in Venezuela is over. The Venezuelan and Chinese troops have surrendered. Chinia does not have superior Navy. Their AI computer is a great asset to them but Chinia's president and military leaders fear it has become to powerful and it's session making powers. Japan has now entered the war and it will lead the attack into China. Enjoyed immensely!!! My highest recommendation!!
The novel kicks up a gear has American President learns that there modern war doctrines are useless against Jade Dragon but threw secrets weapon program and a return to use the of radically WW2 Gov’t policy( skimming off the useless to finds war heros like Patton and MacAuthor in WW2) we see has taken the war into the Asian theater in victory across the Korean area but has plans progressed the Russo-China boarder becomes a meatgrinder for NATO/Russian forces who learn to late of China’s brutal war machines ability’s and Jade Dragons lack compassion on the losers of they’s battles.
I truly injoyed the novel every scene every chacther dialog was an Emmy award if this series ever gets made into a Blockbuster movie. The story is inventive in add aspects of mordern information like reporters with the soldiers to get a different take on the general civilians where taking the war which shows the depth of world building the author(s) are portraying to give more feelings of feed back to the other chacthers and it effects them like NSA for the president becoming over worked or the Secretary of the President using for his own interests help to really ground the chacthers in reality that show the quality of A-list authors.
The Military chs where excellent has usually do the use of new technology and weapons at times seemed a bit barebones on details for them like the China’s HAWKS program was skent on how it was developed or worked on the user to link there mind with the machine but I know this was more a time of inventing/exceeding a machine/idea that exists now but isn’t in use yet so not many details it exist truly give much leaving you to give the best details to keep the reader informed but has a military thriller reader I enjoy thous neat little info briefs to really get a better understanding of how that technology will effect futures battle and wars. I hope in next novel there better details to give those advancements of military hardware in the war.
The authors have hit full stride with volume 4 of the Monroe Doctrine. This fourth part of the story advances the plot quite a ways down the field, it balances perfectly between West Wing politics and battlefield mayhem, and the near-future tech that is employed is well executed.
This quick summary aside, there were two very cool elements of the story. First, was that the US government used nuclear weapons in a first-strike capacity. I won't get into the specifics, but the advancement of this part of the story was well executed and bone-chilling. In my head, I could see the President, her advisors and the generals huddled somewhere in Washington rationalizing their use of this nightmare weapon. This whole part of the book was exceptional and in my opinion seems entirely possible.
The second remarkable part (not remarkable - rather visceral and brutal), was the scene when the US Marines took the beach in Venezuela. The authors patiently set this scenario up in volume three and it paid off big time in this listen. US forces (but also the UK and French) take horrific losses and while they end up winning the battle, the scene drove home that the United States is in genuine peril in this story. No one likes a story that's predictable and this battle, in combination with further developments in the Chinese AI storyline, put doubt into my mind that the American side of the conflict can win.
Without a doubt, this was the most compelling, most balanced, and most thrilling of the four volumes. I give it a five-star rating.
Finally, once again, the narrator did a superb job. His tone is perfect for this genre and I give full credit to his accents. Not easy. This time around, he adds a solid Aussie accent to his repertoire. Well done!!
Now that the war in the Caribbean has finished with the US NATO and their allies conquering Cuba, El Salvador and Venezuela, it's time to go after the Red Chinese on their own territory. The Chicoms had invaded North Korea and the Far West of Russia, including Vladivostock. With the help of their AI the Jade Dragon (JD), they have been able to take the control of the war.
The US decides that the only way to stop the Chinese is to unload on North Korea with Nuclear and Neutron Bombs, which decapitate the top levels of both the political and military and allows the US and ROK troops to conquer up to the Yalu River. In retaliation, the ChiComs use nuclear weapons on the largest military base in South Korea and Japan. At this point the nuclear exchanges stop. It appears that the rest of the war will be fought with conventional weapons.
The Chinese AI has created large groups of autonomous weapons, like tanks, artillery and airplanes. The Allies have revamped their military to remove most of their previous upper echelons who the AI had to much information about and could anticipate their actions. The new leaders will now try to fight the war using different strategies, to confuse the AI.
This is a great addition to this series and I'm looking forward to the new books as they come out.
4th book in and I'm struggling. Miranda is dropped and a new guy in. These books are disappointing mainly because they seem to be written for people who have limited vocabularies or aged 7. They constantly Americanise the language of the foreign participants. I'd wager the Han Chinese don't say 'heck'. The AI is drawn from so many influences that are so much better than this. They attempt to cover the obvious by making reference to SkyNet etc. I cannot stand the religious references that Americans use to justify violence and disintegrating victims with a neutron bomb. Then trying to get the AI to learn compassion by reading the bible is not the thing to give it. Starting off with talking snakes, an evil woman eating an apple and god wiping out all animals and humanity (luckily noah had time to collect all the marsupials, grizzly bears and penguins) in a flood through to his 'son' being nailed to a T, the bible is not the best source. I suspect the AI would call ********* and wipe us all out deeming us stupid and not worth the effort. I enjoyed the Red Storm series although it was suggested to me by amazon because of the blatant use of the Red Storm Rising novel, the pinnacle of this genre. D- must bring these up a level. I never have to use the dictionary function on my kindle when reading these authors. I like to be challenged.
The invasion of Russia in this book reminds me of Tom Clancy's The Bear and the Dragon. In that book, China invades Eastern Russia. Again the Russians must trade space for time. Meanwhile, the US president cleans house the same way Lincoln and Roosevelt did. A lot of prewar and peacetime commanders can't handle change or warfare. History is filled with colonels and majors who know how to win and jump grades in a matter of months. Eisenhower was only a lieutenant colonel in 1939. No one would have predicted he would be a 5 star general in six years. Are the authors correct? Is the Pentagon of 2024 require a massive shake up? Does California have too many regulations and regulators that hinders growth?
In book 4, there are so many threads that got resolved even if only partially. Rosone and his co-author introduced new ones like the NATO team with Italians, Dutch, Polish, Germans, and Ukrainians all working together with the Russians. Some were KIA while others lived. There is action on the land, under the sea, and in the air. That can be tough to keep track of. On top of that, there is the NSA / CoS feud. Who will win that one? All of them serve at the will of the President. She can hire, fire, or force to resign. Look at Trump's cabinet; he changed the makeup several times in the first 2 years of his presidency.
The plus side is that Rosone and his collaborators do a great job creating an ensemble cast of both heroes and villains, unlike Michael Stackpole. I've complained about Stackpole multiple times.
I love reading James Rosone and Miranda Watson's books they always are action packed and thought provoking. The Monroe Doctrine series is about the Chinese creating an AI call Jade Dragon that learns as it goes and has come up with a plan that will defeat America and Europe and make China the only Super Power. Volume 4 The US drops nukes on North Korea before they can launch their nukes, then takeover North Korea. The Chinese retaliate and take out Kunsun, Korea and Sasebo, Japan with sub launched nukes. The Chinese attack Russia and are pushing the Russians and NATO back in Siberia. The US and NATO finally take Caracas, Venezuela but the Marine Amphibious Invasion is almost a disaster as the Chinese unleash their suicide drones killing thousands. Jade Dragon is slowly becoming a problem because it is starting to issue orders without permission. Jade is also building robotic soldiers which are scaring the Chinese President and he is wondering if they have made a mistake. Absolutely a most read that love a good political/military thriller.
I'm enjoying the series, knowing a world war involves many battle fronts on land, on the seas and in the air, and involves many details being covered.
I have a personal gripe that may only irk me and no one else. I hate, hate, HATE the phrase "try and ...." which the authors continually misuse and over use, and the proofreaders ignore. Read the very last sentence in this book. Now read it again, but remove those two useless words. Now read it one more time, but change it to "try to ....". Which phrase did you mean? Which impression did you want to leave with the reader? Could the action fail? Then say so - he/they will "try to" take an action that might not succeed. If the action/effort will certainly succeed, simply delete the words, "try and" and leave it at that. Please!!!
This book continues the conflict in Venezuela and tied up the US, British and French forces with a war of attrition with Chinese and Venezuelan combined forces. On the other hand, China engages Russia and is gaining Russian territory with great speed. It seems that the combined might of Russian and German forces is not able to stop the Chinese advance. The Chinese AI, Jade Dragon, authorized the nuclear strike against the American bases in Japan and South Korea without approval from the President. This scared the Chinese President and his Generals. The creator of Jade Dragon, is now trying to teach compassion to the AI through Christian religious materials.
Like the first three books in this series it an action packed, hard to put down book. Kind of scary the way he talks about throwing tactical nukes around just like conventional grenades. Even to the point of a massive first strike. I don't want to spoil things so I'll close this review except to say read the entire series in order. While this could be read as a stand alone book, in my opinion it would be a better read if had read the first books from the beginning.
The storylines/plot layout keeps getting better, as each novel is added to this series. There are always new technological advances, each one more scary/realistic than the previous ones. The suspense and scene detail really put the reader into the action sequence and location. The violence and gore are not too over the top and yet reciprocal to the situation. This series has always had a "Tom Clancy" Red Storm Rising feel to it, just a lot more updated scenarios. I cannot wait for the next-in-line novel from these authors.
If you enjoy reading endless descriptions of military operations, and equipment couple with military jargon one acronyms then this is a book for you. I got to the third book of this series to see how it developed and if it got better, but by the third book I started shopping whole chapters of gratuitous fighting without impacting the storyline.,and decided to bail out . As the number of reviews steadily decrease with every book I think I am not the only one to cut bait and run.
I liked the shifting from one. Front to x another front in the story telling. It was interesting to be on the Russian front and then suddenly we in the air, the stratosphere, with the pilots getting ready for an attack on the radars below or switching targets to ride the Chinese and their super computer of an important resource. Next thing you now you are involved with a submarine attack. And for sure the good guys don't always win the confrontation. Excellent approach.
4th book in and I'm wondering why I continue with this one--a 13 hour listen. Authors annoyingly Americanize the language of the foreign characters, who last about as long as a red shirt on Star Trek. The strategery (big picture) is pretty good and I enjoy the interactions of national leaders. But the droning descriptions of military operations, and equipment coupled with tactical military jargon caused me to skip over an hour or two all tolled. Thus, the two rating. If I had not gotten the unreturnable books as a deal from audible.com, I would probably terminate this series.
The series started off strong, and the concept is great. As the story progresses though it’s becoming more of an education on each military unit and their capabilities, rather than their part in the story. It feels disjointed and the main thread, JD, seems to disappear for chapters at a time. Would like to find out what happens, but fear this might end up being a 20 book series at the current rate!
The scope of this series is planetary: Geographic, political, Cultural, interpersonal... the scope of understanding by the authors is impressive and taxing for non military readers.
Any of the books in this series is an entertaining read but expect to spend time trying to figure out what the acronym means or even to which country it belongs to.
I have read this series 1-4 hoping we would get to some conclusion. Only to be strung along by more descriptions of weapon systems I don’t care about. I used to think Tom Clancy was the most verbose writer in this genre, but please. Give me a break. I’m off the train never to return. Don’t waste your time .
If you really won’t to get po’d go read the congressional report.
I applaud you for your ability to sell books but…some conclusion!
This book is a continuation of the story. As with its predecessors, it is a direct continuation and itself does not conclude the story. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it a great deal, although the battle narratives seem to become repetitive as the war moves to Russia. I did find myself looking forward to the battles involving American forces and, in particular, the unfolding bigger picture narratives. I intend to read the next book in the series.
This series deals with the real possibilities of a modern world war prosecuted using powerful AI's (and the human toll is high). While I've enjoyed the series, the authors are military nerds and name military gear and other items fully (and exhaustively) instead of shortening to fast acronyms like they do in the military. I recently learned the series is made up of 9 books, and I'm pretty sure I'm not going to read all of them. This definitely should have been a shorter overall series.
Well written and fast paced reading. This book was hard to put down, especially during the battle descriptions. The War in the Caribbean and South America is wrapping up and the focus moves to the western Pacific rim and eastern Russia. I've already preordered volume V and look forward to its release.
Another excellent read in continuing saga of China AI versus the world. Definitely some relevant things going on today between the world and Russia. The president Definitely shook up the old democracy. She trying to Trump the way of doing things so AI can't predict what her next moves are . Definitely 10 stars 🌟 plus!!!!! Thanks Carl Clause
This particular volume was fantastic. This may be the first time I'd read more than four books in a series. I'll certainly be going on to volume 5. I'm really surprised at how this series flows on and on. It will be very interesting to see how the authors wrap this up.
I’ve invested enough time to read four of these books. I just find myself flipping through too many pages with stuff that was not interesting or just too tough to get through. I NEVER do this with a book series, but I’m bailing on this story. I hope the West wins the war.
Realistic battles.ple.not of personal stories mixed in with great action! Never really sure who will win or even survive. Get it start with the firsT book.enjoy the ride!!!!!
Truly riveting and engaging. The level of detail and description of the battles really brings home the scale and complexity of modern warfare and how the enemy always gets a vote.
Like the others in the series it's nonstop action. I just finished this book and now have to find something else to read. I'm current on the "Into the Fire" book so what do I do?
