She’s sweet & cozy mysteries. He’s fun & cozy flings. Till a deadly secret reveals not-so-cozy things.
Twenty-six-year-old Molly Stewart—ex-Navy nurse and former evidence technician for the Charleston Police Department—has been burned by love. So when her friend, Pastor Chase Griffin, begs her to move to scenic Lake Loon to be a nurse and companion for Miss Lilly, his elderly landlady, she jumps at the chance. The secluded and cozy cottage on a clear mountain lake seems the perfect place to heal from her fiancé’s betrayal as well as indulge in one of her greatest passions—cozy romance. First with reading them by the bookcase and then hopefully, if dreams come true, solving them one day as a licensed detective. But when Miss Lilly’s estranged great nephew shows up, it’s no mystery as to why he and Molly butt heads. Because it only takes one stolen kiss—while she’s sleeping, no less—to discover he’s an even bigger player than the ex-fiancé who broke her heart.
When international playboy and Irish soccer star Brec McGill learns his long-lost great aunt is in a coma from a drowning accident, he rushes to her side. Not only is he anxious to reconnect with his only living relative he spent summers with as a boy, but her cottage on Lake Loon, Georgia is the perfect respite to heal from game injuries and escape a tabloid scandal. At thirty-three he’s disillusioned with the game, his fiancée, and life in general, craving nothing but a little peace and solitude to get his head on straight. But when he discovers his aunt’s cottage is not only inhabited by a crusty Aunt Lilly he hasn’t seen in ten years, but a pretty prude of a nurse as well, his plans take a nose-dive in the lake. Because suddenly it appears not only was Aunt Lilly’s accident no accident … but somebody out there wants to see them all dead.

*Warnings* #1 This is a long review, so pull up a chair and grab a bowl of popcorn. You’ll be here awhile. #2 When I read a review, I want substantial information. So I will not skimp on the details. Which may mean some spoilers, so watch out.
Wow, y’all, I feel like it’s been a while since I’ve written a review for a Julie Lessman novel. A whole bloomin’ year, actually, and suffice it to say my reviewing style has changed. I tend to be a little more...coherent than I was this time last year.
That said, I have no plans of being coherent today.
Julie Lessman wrote a mystery. She finally, after writing books for a dozen years, wrote a mystery. Considering how much I rattle on about her ability to amp up the suspense and drive you nuts with red herrings, y’all know I’m pretty darn pleased about that. I am. I am very, very pleased.
In typical Lessman fashion, she stuck with her rakish Irishmen, prudish heroines, and hilarious old ladies. And, on top of that, she took me back to where I first fell in love with her books, Isle of Hope.
*squeals incessantly*
Yes indeedy, this book is a spin-off of the infamous Isle of Hope series, don’t you know, and I felt right at home on Lake Loon with Miss Lily (from His Steadfast Love) and the rest of the gang—including Chase and Cat Griffin and Pastor Dave, and some cameo appearances from Ben Carmichael *swoons*, Shannon Cunningham, and Lacey O’Brien!
Of course, Julie introduces two newbies...gun-toting retired Navy nurse and old friend of Chase’s, Molly Stewart (who is, like, her first non-Irish character ever....well, since Alex Kincaid; I don’t think he was Irish...but anyway), and Miss Lily’s wayward great-nephew, the notorious soccer star, Breccan McGill.
Number one, you can’t go wrong with a heroine who packs. Like, seriously, I cannot count how many times I have begged heroines in novels of all sorts to carry a blasted gun. Just think of all the muggings and attempted assaults and annoying people we could avoid…
ANYWAY. Where was I? Oh, yes…
Naturally, Molly was awesome. I mean, she wasn’t Charity...which was a bummer. Y’all know how much I love Charity. *pouts * But for a non-Charity character, Molly wasn’t half bad. She was so sweet with Miss Lily and just fit right in with the original Hopers (which is what I’mma call the citizens/characters of Isle of Hope). I still think she was a little young to have been through everything she had...but maybe not. I dunno.
Then there was Brec. *sighs * He was...well, Irish. What more can I say? To be honest, he wasn’t my favorite of Julie’s heroes. He’s down there with Sean and Steven and Brady and Jack and...yeah...he’s not Mitch or Luke. I’ll put it like that. But what he lacked in Mitch-ness, he more than made up for in culinary skills. I’m tellin’ y’all, that man could cook! And Julie’s descriptions of food…augh. My mouth’s watering just thinking about it.
As my friend Sophia pointed out, Brec was very different from most of Julie’s heroes. How, I can’t explain, but he does have a different aura about it. I think it’s all those Irish sayings myself, but who knows! Not a bad aura, no, just...different. Same goes for Molly. You know, the whole book did have a whiff of uniqueness about it. I wonder why… Come to think of it, it might be because this is her first ever full-fledged mystery!
I haven’t mentioned that yet, have I? I have? Oh, well, we all needed the reminder.
Mainly because we’re all wondering how did Julie Lessman pull off a romantic suspense? Did she keep her focus on the romance and leave the suspense/mystery hanging? Or did she skimp on character development to work on fine-tuning her plot?
To answer your questions, dear intrigued reader-to-be, no. No, she didn’t. She did exactly what she always does: delivers a story with strong, in-depth characters and a well-developed, engaging plot that is always authentically driven by the characters. It sounds preposterous for a mystery/suspense to be so character-oriented, but, y’all, Julie Lessman can do anything she puts her mind to!
I’ll be honest with y’all, though. As much as I enjoy a good mystery, I still prefer her straight up romances. Augh the feels in those things. Anyway, I personally think she balanced the romance and the suspense very well...PLUS SHE GAVE US A CAT AND CHASE SCENE. I HAVE BEEN WANTING ONE OF THOSE SINCE I FIRST FINISHED HIS STEADFAST LOVE AND SHE FINALLY GAVE ME ONE. I AM SO HAPPY AND OVERJOYED AND YEEEESSSSS.
Anyway… I need to get a grip, don’t I?
And the spirituality. That’s one thing Julie Lessman never shies away from, not even when she ventures into the world of suspense (which I’ve found to be quite lax in the sermon department). You’ve got Miss Lily and Molly preaching, with the lovely themes of forgiveness, freedom, and truth interwoven with the story! Perfect for a mystery, am I right?
I am. As per usual. *winks*
Back on the mystery subject, y’all. This woman did it up right with all the twists and turns and red herrings and my goodness! As soon as you think you’ve got it all figured out, Sloan shows up to tell you otherwise.
SPEAKING OF. She did it again, you guys. She gave us a love triangle with two fellers ya love to pieces and a heroine who can’t seem to pick the right one! And here’s the thing...they both seemed right. Like, you know who she’s gonna end up with, and you’re rooting for them all the way, but she’s so good with the other option and you’d be pleased with whomever she chose, you know? She did the same thing with Faith, Collin, and Mitch, and Jack, Lacey, and Chase, and, well, pretty much everyone, come to think of it. She’s really, really good at those love triangle/square/never-ending line things.
I say all that to say that I loved Sloan. Sure, I glowered at him along with Brec sometimes, but for the most part, I loved him. I’m crazy excited to read his story!
One thing I want to point out was how Julie wrote Brec’s redemption arc (and, no, this doesn’t count as a spoiler). What struck me the first time I read it (as a beta-reader) was that his “come to Jesus” moment was very short and quick, as if he were simply acquiescing to Aunt Lily’s request. Then, reading it again, I realized how realistically she wrote his salvation and sanctification.
You see, Brec admitted that he always believed in God, so that wasn’t the issue. He’d even accepted Jesus into his heart when he was eight...but somewhere along the way, he lost his faith. (His faith, mind you, not his salvation. You can’t lose that.) Anyway, per Aunt Lily’s prodding and a bit of his own conviction, he rededicated his life to Christ. Even still, my man’s got issues with everything from jealousy and anger to unforgiveness to abstinence. That just doesn’t seem right, though. I mean, he’s saved, he’s committed to living for Jesus. Why in the world is he struggling with all this junk and is so ill-prepared to follow God’s precepts?
Um...because he’s human? Because we all do the exact same thing. We accept Christ but not the change He brings. We refuse to examine ourselves and purge our hearts, thinking that we’re all good just because we’re Christians. Wrong. We are constantly in need of laying down our lives and our selfish desires, constantly called to repentance, and are constantly being restored in multiple areas of our lives as we embark on the journey of sanctification.
So, anyway, yes. I loved the way she portrayed Brec’s slow process of leaving the wide way to destruction and starting to walk on the straight and narrow!
Long story short, The Secret of Emerald Cottage was a Julie Lessman mystery and it really doesn’t get any better than that! Unlike most suspense writers, she placed a lot of her focus on character development, but she never let the plot weaken or go by the wayside, like some romance writers do! As always, she churned out another engaging novel that will leave you breathless—only this time with suspense!

Wooooww!!! So, just like any other Julie Lessman book, I read through this one like it was no time at all. Like, where did it all go?! I always love her writing style, always so flowy with such natural dialogue that makes it easy to read through.
I think it is only appropriate to start this review with Brec. Because I *need* to talk about him. There is something about Brec that made his character so different and distinct from all of JL's heroes. Many of her heroes do kind of share the playboy trope, but Brec... Oh, this guy. I found his character so different than all the other ones I've read from her! Mainly, Brec contained soooo much more vulnerability in him. Not that other heroes from JL's book don't have that, but it felt more distinct here. I loved how the author crafted him. I felt his character to be created so realistically, especially as a player.
But, while he gave me that good impression and distinction, *prepare for what sounds like self-contradiction* I didn't really like his character thaaaat much. I know, I sound like I'm contradicting myself in this first half of the review. Maybe it was the fact that he kept kissing Molly while she was sleeping... But to elaborate... I don't know. I liked how his character was so different. But I did get annoyed at him at certain moments (ok, that might be a me problem..), and I just didn't find him to be a likable fella.
Molly? All right. I liked her, probably more than Brec...? (yes, i'm confused at myself right now.) I really admired her resistance to Brec and how she was cautious in her relationship with him (kinda) because she realized his lack of faith. That was something that got me really cheery and happy. Althoughhh, she didn't give me as much of a distinct impression as Brec did and didn't necessarily impress me or stood out as a character.
Which brings me to... the romance! I know that I always love JL's progression in this department, where it's just really progressive while being so fun to read the H and H's interactions with each other. So here, I'd say it overall was super sweet and cute! I had the loveliest time seeing the characters progress as characters XD and seeing them fall in love and handle their emotions was very much amusing for me to read!
Buuut at the same time, there were times where I just didn't feel so convinced on why Molly and Brec fell in love. It felt a lot of it was because of mutual attraction. Also, their story didn't necessarily give me the usual satisfaction the author's other books usually give me. I think part of it is also because I felt like I didn't love Molly or Brec as much as I usually do with the author's characters. So I didn't necessarily have that "cheer them on" feeling as strongly. M & B were lovely characters; I think they were both very well crafted and didn't necessarily just felt like "another character". It's just that they weren't very much memorable to me. So that did affect the romance aspect for me. But with that said, I really enjoyed reading their story; a JL romance is always something I love. :)
So, besides the romance? CONTENT!!!!! So very randomly, I have to put it out there that I really enjoyed the content. Like, the story! Everything was just super enjoyable to me. I had to space out the reading time over a few weeks because of life, but when I got a free day, I soaked up everything, and boyyyy was the story a joy to my heart. :D I always love JL's pace. While it did feel like it kicked in with a slower start, the more I read, the more engrossed I became. Soon, one chapter led to another, and I had to figure out what happened next, which is always the best feeling ever!
And then the mystery aspect? YEP. I really really enjoyed it. To the coreee! And I think that was more of the driving force as to why I just had to read what happened next. It was crafted and told in a way that made you so curious as to what was actually happening. And I'll admit that I can be a blur girl and not get what's going on sometimes, BUT, I got the hang of it, and I just loooooved every moment of it!
Anywhos! To end this review, I gotta repeat myself (cus why not? XD) and say that I really had the most jolly time reading this book and seeing Molly and Brec's story. It was, as I said earlier, a pure joy to read and so worth my time. The mystery gave the story such an exciting, new touch to it, and it was just overall engaging and purely so lovely to read. I seriiioously hope that the author will do more of these because this was just AWESOME. :)
Wow! These characters had some great chemistry and the author was able to weave a tantalizing mystery within the pages, as well. It was fun to see that this story is connected to characters from the author’s Isle of Hope series, yet can be enjoyed even if you haven’t read those novels.
I couldn’t help but immediately like Molly and Brec, both of whom had been wounded in their pasts. Molly’s was a fairly recent betrayal and she was not quick to trust Brec with her heart. But I just loved the way she slowly got Brec to open up about the recent scandal he was involved in, and eventually to face the painful events of the past which so influenced his life.
I really enjoyed the mystery aspect of the story, and was intrigued by how all of the pieces were connected, but I was especially happy that there was plenty of romance, too. Brec had quite the spiritual journey and it was refreshing to see the renewal that brought to his life. What a great story!
(4.5 stars)
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Excuse me while I finish fanning myself! I'd certainly recommend reading a Julie Lessman novel during freezing cold weather rather than sultry late summer. lol Yes, she's still la crème de la crème of steamy, hot, clean romance, so fans are a must! But can she balance the heat with a cold-blooded killer on the loose?—the answer is an emphatic, pleasantly surprised YES! Not only did the suspense amp my blood pressure up a notch, but so did international playboy, Brec McGill! Wowza!
In spite of his good-looking charm, shenanigans, and player status—that man sure can cook! And that accounts for alot in my book (pardon my pun!) Under the guise of being a humorous, alluring womanizer, Brec is deeply wounded by his past...carrying way too much bitterness and unforgiveness on his brawny shoulders. In steps Molly Stewart, as lovely on the inside as she is on the out, and quickly turns Brec's world upside down! I enjoyed the witty banter between the two and the obvious physical chemistry that Molly is determined to fight at any cost.
Readers everywhere will bask in the descriptive, scenic beauty of Emerald Cottage—a veritable respite from the world. I so enjoyed the secondary characters such as the delightful, godly Miss Lilly, and some we met previously in The Isle of Hope series! I didn't figure out whodunit till the very end, but I did have my suspicions. Lessman intertwines a heart-pounding suspense with a beautifully written tale of redemption, forgiveness, and romance...be sure to pre-order your copy today!
"Because unforgiveness will not only rob you of every joy forgiveness can bring, but also many blessings God has in store for your future.” (The Secret of Emerald Cottage)
Every time Julie Lessman shifts genres, however slightly, I am there for it. I’ve long been a fan of her WW1 era & Roaring 20s historical romances, and then I became a fan of her contemporary romances. And then I became a fan of her western historical romances and her WW2 historical romance, and now I’m forever a fan of her romantic suspense too.
The Secret of Emerald Cottage combines all of my favorite things – a swoony hero, a plucky heroine, a swoony hero, a cute-and-feisty old lady, a swoony hero, heart-in-your-throat suspense, a swoony hero, decades-held secrets, a swoony hero, stick-your-head-in-the-freezer kisses, a swoony hero, character growth that points to Jesus… and did I mention a swoony hero? Keep your fans, alternate sources of oxygen, fainting couches, and freezers close at hand as you watch Irish soccer star Breccan McGill fall head over heels for ex-Navy nurse (and budding Nancy Drew) Molly Stewart.
Brec has years of bitterness and anger, plus the acclaim & temptations of stardom, clouding his heart from hearing the pull of God, and Molly has been burned too badly by his type in the past. But sometimes love comes at us unexpectedly – the love of God and the love of a soul mate – and watching these two navigate the rocky shores where faith and life intersect brought tears to my eyes on a couple of occasions. And then there’s Miss Lilly (whom I adored in His Steadfast Love and adored spending time with again in this book) who adds some endearing tension relief in one delightful spitfire of a package, with some seasoned wisdom and the power of prayer to boot.
The mystery & suspense elements are very well done, timed nicely with the pace of the other aspects of the plot (namely, the romance). After all, intense romantic tension balances perfectly with the intensity of a suspense novel. Between Molly’s nightmares, Brec’s kisses, the building danger, and some surprising twists, don’t plan to breathe much while you’re reading The Secret of Emerald Cottage!
Bottom Line: Julie Lessman, as always, doesn’t sacrifice on passion – for Jesus, for prayer, and for romance – and the message in The Secret of Emerald Cottage is on point for all three. Added to her fan-favorite signature trifecta and vivid characters, Lessman’s first foray into romantic suspense is a definite success! I hope we see many more from her in this genre, in fact, and I think the setting of Lake Loon probably has other secrets that need to be brought to the surface. Throw in visits with characters from her Isle of Hope series, too, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a great read!
(I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book which I read via Kindle Unlimited.)
For this review I'm kinda just going to go off on an unfiltered rant because why not, so, you have been warned. ;)
*takes in a breath and screams excitedly*
Ahhhhhh!!! First of all, Molly. I loved her and think she was an amazingly developed character. She wasn't a Mary Sue character despite the fact that she was rather straitlaced and a Christian. She wasn't either that annoying and unrealistic I-can-do-it-all, girl-power character (we all have seen those, right?), if you know what I mean. She was believable and interesting - like, as much as I loved Brec's POV, I was also always excited to read her side of the story. Okay: AND SHE HAD A GUN AND WAS TRAINED IN SELF-DEFENSE STUFF!!! Tbh, that might have been all it would have taken for me to love her (but thankfully, as I said, there was a whole lot more to her character).
Please, we NEED more gal characters like this in stories!! Even though I felt like the idea of sleeping with a gun under your pillow might not have been so smart safety-wise, she still knew how to use it. And not only that, but she had empty-handed self-defense skills. (I used to be obsessed with learning about that stuff.) That was like the cherry on the top.
And how it came into play near the end (not giving any spoilers away, lol...) was SO satisfying. And painful, yeah, but satisfying. I was thinking, as cool as it would have been for Brec to have rescued her (this doesn't count as a spoiler, right?), the fact that she was able to defend herself was cooler than if he'd stepped in.
And on to Brec. HIS BACKSTORY!!!! In the beginning, I was like, hmmm. Not (by a looong shot) a fan of a guy just kissing a girl in her sleep. I felt like he could be a bit of a shallow character.
Then I was proven wrong. The way he cared for Miss Lilly (eeee I adored her - gonna get to her in a bit!) and Molly was heart-melting and showed that soft side of him that you didn't really see right off the bat. And his unexpected cooking skills. Haha. Let's just say DO NOT READ THIS BOOK IF YOU'RE HUNGRY. Because it will make you even hungrier. (Aaaaand I'm already hungry thinking about it.)
Back to his backstory. That really grounded my sympathy and connection for/to him. He wasn't shallow. He felt so believable and well-rounded, both himself and his emotions. Mrs. Lessman is truly incredible at making each character act in character. It sounds simple and easy but as a writer, I can tell you it's not easy all the time. For me anyways.
His redemption arc was just so good. Slow, yet sure. I loved how (as a writer and reader; this would not be cool in real life, haha) his really messy, messy past carried forward into the present day. It was so realistic. You don't just become a Christian and suddenly not have to deal with anything in your past, you know? So that aspect of his character was awesome too.
And Miss Lilly. I believe she was my favorite grandma-figure character I've ever read in a story. Usually I feel bored by those characters, or they fall flat and it feels like something's - a big something's - missing in their personality/character. But not for Miss Lilly. She was so peppy and hilarious and sassy, I just loved it. So funny. Stubborn. All that good stuff. All the conversations with her were fun to read, often because of her humorous expressions and strong-willed opinions. (And she was so sweet!!)
Speaking of conversations, I want to say that I LOVED the dialogue in this book. It was awesome.
And Sloan. Fascinating how I wanted both him AND Brec to end up with Molly. The love triangle was kinda perfection, in my opinion. Just how a good love triangle should be - both guys are awesome, the girl likes both, and you want everybody to be happy in the end. That was very well written.
I want to say a few things about the mystery aspect of it. IT WAS SO COOL. A couple times I skimmed dialogue having to do with the mystery because it was a bit confusing, but I do that a lot to a lot of otherwise good books lol (meaning I believe it doesn't have anything to do with the author; it's just me as a reader... that's how I see it anyways). You can tell a lot of thought went into crafting the plot twists and mystery. So many times I felt like I was going to die of suspense. The whole dreams/nightmares part of it too... chills!! So scary! Haha!
All in all, it was INCREDIBLE, especially as Julie Lessman's first romance+mystery novel. I truly hope she writes more in the future!! I'd eat them up. Metaphorically. (As for how I'd rate it, I'd say, hmm... 15+? All depends on your comfort level when it comes to romance and things like that in books, I guess. Intense, edgy, but clean. Who knows, I may edit this later to include the things you may want to take note of before you read it. But I just wrote a bit of a novel of a review, so I'll go now.)
Wow! We all know Julie Lessman as writing heart stopping passionate Christian romance, and now she writes a sweet but intriguing cozy mystery with so many twists and turns you will be guessing whodunit throughout the entire book. Lessman nails it with her first Cozy mystery and I am looking forward to more just like this one from her. I think Sloan needs his own story, right? This cast of realistic characters quickly stole my heart. Of course Miss Lilly is my favorite, with Molly and Brec not far behind, and they had me laughing quite a bit. I was so excited to find characters from The Isle of Hope series in this story as well. I love that series so much. I love and appreciate the way Julie weaves the Christian life in the lives of her characters and the scripture she uses were ones I needed to hear. I also like the way she writes into the story intimate relationships after marriage. But there is romance here. Lots of it. And passionate it is, after all it is a Julie Lessman book and she knows her stuff when it comes to kissing and cuddling. And it is so nice to be able to read a sweet passionate romance that is clean!
I was hoping Molly and Brec would be an item, but Brec has so much baggage, will he ever be the man Molly needs? And then there is Sloan, a Christian and perfect gentleman. And in the mix there is still someone out there murdering people and it seems as though they have their eyes set on Emerald Cottage and Miss Lilly and Molly. Are their lives at risk? There's a lot of action going on in this story and there is no way to even touch on it all here, so you really need to read the book to find out what happens with these characters. And if you have read a Julie Lessman book, this is a great one to start with and you are certainly in for a treat. And you Cozy mystery lovers out there. This one is for you. The Secret of Emerald Cottage truly is a 50% suspense and 50% romance story, which is so amazing I give it Five Stars and I wish I could give it more.
A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
The Secret of Emerald Cottage by Julie Lessman is a stand-alone, return novel to Lake Loon, Georgia. When Chase Griffin asks Molly Stewart, an ex-Navy nurse, to take the position of nurse-companion to Miss Lilly, his landlady; they had no idea that it would become such a dangerous assignment. When Miss Lilly’s famous soccer playing nephew shows up things heat up even more. The suspense in the story was very well done for a self-proclaimed romance writer. The romance was a little too intense for my taste. The Scripture verses throughout the story were well placed. DISCLAIMER: There was intense kissing, talk of extra-marital affairs, and a near rape.
I received this e-book from the author for my honest review.
The suspense/mystery genre is one I've only recently started to dip my toes in but I've enjoyed everything I've read so far. So most romatic suspense books are 80% suspense and 20% romance but Julie Lessman opted for a 50/50 split in her book. Now I'm always happy for more romance in books but in this case I think it caused the story to lose it's suspense and become more of a cozy mystery which was fine with me because I like mysteries just as much as I like suspense. The mystery aspect was really well done too because it took me most of the book to figure out who was behind everything. The setting was perfect for a cozy mystery and it had such a lovable host of characters, some of which you'll know if you've read Julie Lessman's Isle of Hope series. Molly was as cute and fun as her name and I couldn't help envying her having those two guys chasing her. I always love a reformed bad-boy, so Brec fit the bill just perfect. Julie Lessman has been dubbed by some as the 'kissing queen' by some so I knew on that front I wasn't going to be disappointed and I sure wasn't!
All of Julie Lessman's trademark sizzle and spark with a hint of mystery besides? Yes please!
This author has a deft hand with characterization that always leaves me feeling like I'm witnessing the angst and turmoil in real lives...because it ain't a Lessman story unless your tummy's in a twist and you have a lump in your throat some of the time. :-)
Molly's all snap and sass -- a strong willed woman who values honesty, integrity and faith...which is kind of a problem when Brec shows up because he's been anything but. Not her ideal man but my how those sparks just seem to zip and zing around them every which way. There's a prodigal son twist to this story that was moving and inspiring...
But...and I can't believe I'm saying this...I was#team 'other guy' all the way. No spoiler because it's obvious from the cover blurb who the hero is in this story, but yes, there's a bit of a love triangle going on here. It's not the dominant part of the story, but it's there, and the other guy had my vote even though I knew it wouldn't turn out well for him. Sigh. I'm hoping the author writes him his very own love story. Sniffle.
I think what put me off Brec was the meet-cute. It made me uncomfortable -- again, no spoilers -- but -- gah, I'd like to talk this out with someone -- let's just say I found it unsettling enough that I was off kilter the rest of the read so while I could appreciate his growth and his vulnerabilities and the inner battles he had over making sense of his past in order to make changes in his present...well, I still connected with Other Guy more.
The mystery is multi-layer intriguing, but I wouldn't say it's the main focus of the story. Molly and Brec's relationship is definitely front and centre but with this Gothic-y vibe, creep factor suspense that seeps into their lives and keeps the reader on edge trying to figure out what happened to Aunt Lilly and why. In between swooning over the toe-curling scenes, because this is a Julie Lessman creation after all. :-)
Molly is such a fabulous girl and grows quite attached to Ms. Lilly while being her caretaker, they truly become like a family in the brief time of being together. When Ms. Lilly gets hurt, Molly immediately gets in touch with Ms. Lilly's nephew. How do they end up meeting? I've never read a scene where two characters meet in such an unexpected way! Molly ends up pulling a gun on him, but thankfully they're able to become peaceful acquaintances after that and the three of them really do make up a nice family vibe.
Brec is facing a scandal in his soccer career and comes home to reconnect with his aunt as things calm down for him. He never expected to come across someone like Molly, he NEVER expected to care what her opinion of him is either! NOW he's got his aunt AND Molly breathing down his neck about scripture, faith and forgiveness that he has no intention of cooperating with. However, the longer he stays at Emerald Cottage with them both, the more his heart is humbled.
In the midst of these three healing in their own ways, someone is trying to break into their home. There's a definite crime going on and a decades old mystery to solve. Will they get to the bottom of it before Ms. Lilly or someone else gets hurt?
I really enjoyed how Lessman changes genres from her normal stories to do this romance-suspense. I really love it when a seasoned author takes a chance like this. I only wish I had loved it more.
I had a difficult time keeping up with the mystery, there is so much chemistry written for Molly and Brec that I would consider this story for an older audience (mind you it's clean, but there are some scenes where someone is either attacked, one rape is threatened, a woman is called certain unedifying words, a married couple cuddles in bed after one of them has a nightmare)...I also had a difficult time with Molly saying she was falling for Brec, but before she could declare her love he had to accomplish a few things to her satisfaction. I totally agree with those conditions, but for me they came across as slightly manipulative (not written that way, but just hit me that way). I do believe that Brec's heart sincerely changes for Christ, but it seemed like his motivation was to win her over instead of getting right with God.
My favorite character was easily Ms. Lilly, such a loving and feisty woman! Wishing all grandmothers could be that cool and totally seeing the author being this way in real life.
I actually felt bad for Brec after it's revealed what his scandal is all about, he's a decent man who got a bad break. However, it does all get turned around for his own good! I didn't agree with all his kissing scenes, but he was well written. I enjoyed the romance of the story more than I did the mystery, but overall enjoyed this journey for BOTH Molly and Brec.
Thanks to the author for the free copy received. I was not obligated to write a positive review, the thoughts and comments are my own.
Julie Lessman writing a mystery?! What?! I had my doubts that the "Kissing Queen" could pull it off, but I tell ya, there should never have been a doubt where this author is concerned! She can write y'all!! With 50% focus on romance and 50% focus on mystery The Secret of Emerald Cottage was a very entertaining/exciting read. Not only did my pulse get racing because of the steamy kissing, but a couple of suspenseful scenes had me holding my breath in anxiety, racing through the pages to find out what happens. I loved Molly and Brec as a couple. I loved Molly's desire to uphold her relationship with the Lord even through her attraction to Brec who wanted nothing to do with Him. I loved the message of "The truth shall set you free" throughout the whole book. As always, the message of redemption, forgiveness, and grace from the Father above was written throughout the story and made the characters struggles and triumphs relatable. For those that are used to Julie Lessman's romance novels I urge you not to hesitate grabbing this one! You will not be disappointed!
I secretly love Julie Lessman's contemporary stories more then her historical. Well I guess not so secret anymore! Her snappy banter and romantic chemistry is so good in her contemporary stories. I loved her isle of Hope series and was really looking forward to seeing this mystery/romance! This reads more like a cozy mystery verses a full blown suspense and we get that trademark Lessman romance and redemption. Perhaps because of the added mystery in some places the romance felt a little pushed and there are definitely many Bible references to point to the theme of the book. I don't really like it when there is a lot of "missionary dating " and I think in some ways Molly came across as manipulative. Yet she did hold her ground where it was important and set clear boundaries which I appreciated how they were mentioned. All in all an enjoyable read, and I really hope to get Sloan's story next!
Acclaimed author Julie Lessman's considerable skills as a storyteller shine in the romantic contemporary cozy mystery, "The Secret of Emerald Cottage". Set in the beautiful fictional community of Lake Loon, GA, this entertaining whodunnit features engaging characters, lively dialogue, and a compelling story line. Molly Stewart, a young former Navy nurse, had also worked as an evidence technician to assist law enforcement investigators by helping to identify, secure, collect, and process evidence. When she is betrayed by her fiance, an offer to care for an elderly lady who had been injured in two separate falls seemed like the perfect escape from her personal troubles. Miss Lilly may be having trouble with mobility, but her mind was as sharp as ever. She and Molly became fast friends, and her snug little lakeside cottage was a perfect reading retreat for Molly and her beloved cozy romantic mysteries. Things become more serious when Miss Lilly--known to walk in her sleep--almost drowns and is hospitalized in a coma. Molly reaches out to Miss Lilly's great-nephew, her only living relative, and a somewhat roguish young man whom she loves like a son. Brec McGill, an Irish soccer star, spent summers with his aunt at Lake Loon, but as an adult who had found international fame, he had rarely returned to the cottage to visit his aunt. With troubles of his own and disillusionment with the celebrity life, Brec is guilt-ridden when he learns of Miss Lilly's health issues. The first meeting between Molly and Brec is a surprise to them both, and sparks fly. Agreeing to call a truce for Miss Lilly' sake, they share a mutual joy that she has awakened from her coma. However, their relief is mixed with concern when she insists that her accidents were no accidents and that someone was trying to kill her. As Brec and Molly work together to protect Miss Lilly and solve the secrets surrounding them, a growing friendship becomes something much deeper--could it be love? Miss Lilly and Molly have always known an abiding faith, and Brec wants to share in that faith. Can he overcome his troubled past and find his own spiritual peace? As more revelations come to light, shockwaves are felt throughout the community. Who can be trusted? Who will survive? "The Secret of Emerald Cottage" is author Julie Lessman's first cozy mystery, and lovers of the genre will greatly enjoy her debut work.
The Secret of Emerald Cottage Is a small town romantic mystery story. This is a standalone read, however if you love the characters like I do, some of them appear in some of her other books. In most mysteries there is usually just minimal romance, but I think Julie Lessman did a great job of including more romance, and had a great mystery to romance balance. I absolutely adored Molly and Brec’s story. Molly is a nurse and former Navy member, she is tough, beautiful and loves God. Which makes her the perfect caretaker for Miss Lilly. Brec is a professional Soccer player in Ireland and is also known for being a player with the ladies. After being involved in a scandal, the timing could not have been any better for him to go visit his Aunt Lilly and get away and also help take care of her. Little did Molly and Brec know that someone was after Miss Lilly something Miss Lilly had, and it would put them all in Danger. I Love that amongst the danger and mystery going on that Molly and Brec are able to work through past hurts and find love. This book is packed with so much it was a wonderful read and I enjoyed every minute of it. It had me feeling happy, trying to help solve the mystery, feeling worried and joy. I am so glad I read The Secret of Emerald Cottage and I would Highly recommend it!!
Julie Lessman has written a passionate romantic suspense! When elderly Miss Lily’s life is threatened, her wayward great nephew, soccer player Breccan McGill, travels to Emerald Cove, Georgia, allowing him to get away from his playboy reputation. He finds attractive caregiver Molly Stewart staying at his great aunt’s cottage. As the attraction between Brec and Molly develops, the crimes in the area increase. A mystery seems to swirl around events which happened years ago among a group of friends, the Lake Loon Lads.
I enjoyed the romance between the couple, with author Julie Lessman’s trademark “passion with a purpose.” The strong desire to live according to one’s faith is so lovingly demonstrated. The mystery adds an interesting element, blending well with the setting and situation. Having read earlier books featuring a few of the characters in this story, it was fun to see them in their new lives.
For lovers of romance and suspense, I highly recommend The Secret of Emerald Cottage!
Favorite quotes: “Because true love……is sacrificial, always putting others before one’s self.” “‘The prayer of a righteous man avails much, and hate to break it to you, mister, but ‘righteous’ means doing things God’s way, and that, my friend, means praying blessings on your enemies.”
If I had to review this book in one word, I'm not sure I could. But WOW takes a lot of it in. This book in my opinion had it all. The book was suspenseful, interesting, romantic, action packed, easy to read, mysterious, Keeps you on the edge of your seat and also keeps you guessing from beginning to end of book. When I was done with the book, I was reading the To The Reader Part and was surprised to learn this was Julie Lessman's first Mystery book. However, she has written other books in different genres. I thought she hit it out of the park with this book. I highly recommend this book and Will read again. **Please Note:** I won this book in a random drawing in a giveaway Julie Lessman had and I was lucky enough to win. Molly and Brec's story continuing on with the Carmichaels from the Isle of Hope series. Aunt Lilly is the elderly lady who owns Emerald Cottage and her poor health brings Molly to be live in help and her great nephew Brec flies in from Ireland. The story reveals Uncle Hal and the Lads of Loon Lake and this develops the mystery of what is on the bottom of the cove/lake and the secrets of friendship which later reveals blackmail. Yes the romance was there (Brec who cooks/ former elite soccer player and Sloan detective) and the mystery of burglary and fire and death. Molly who has been betrayed by her former navy teammate who is a player caught in action. Whole lot of God action also in mercy, grace, prayer, bible reading, to battle pride, bitterness to finding forgiveness and peace. Wait on the next O'Connor cousins book to surface soon!!
It's a good thing I am constantly cold even in late summer or I'd need an ice cube bath while reading a Julie Lessman romance. Ms. Lessman uses her fictional town from her Isle of Hope series as a springboard for this cozy romantic mystery. This cozy mystery had suspense and red herrings to throw you off the trail. I thought I had it figured out but I was wrong. It had romance and kisses that ratcheted up your temperature. I felt like the mystery and romance complemented each other. Julie Lessman pens a suspenseful, romantic story with a beautiful theme of redemption. Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book via the publisher. I was not required to write a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
WOW !!! ONE OF MY FAVORITE AUTHORS JULIE LESSMAN HIT THE MARK ON HER NEW MYSTERY NOVEL! Will not disappoint. This is her first mystery type novel filled with intrigue, romance, forgiveness, and humor, but most of all the power of prayer from Miss Lilly and Molly. A must read for avid Christian fiction romance and mystery readers! Most touching of all was the letter "Brec"Breccan, (the famous gorgeous Irish soccer player) reads from his father. You'll just have to read novel to find out! I also enjoyed how the author brought back the characters, Miss Lilly, Chase, and Cat from the third book of the Isle of Hope series... a must read also!
Eventually I began enjoying the story and found it to be a good story. I really liked the dreams that gave it a rather unique element. I will confess that over the first 25-30% of the book I found myself questioning whether Julie was the one who actually wrote the book. The tone felt inconsistent - such as a tragedy that was followed, in the very next paragraph, by joking and laughter. Perhaps I didn't read closely enough to notice a time lapse.
I'm also not sure if this book was a stand-alone like I thought since I recognized Cat and Chase Griffith.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found myself laughing at Aunt Lilly and her silly sayings. The relationship between the two main characters, Brec and Molly, was fun to watch unfold especially since one considers he kissed her awake when she was having a nightmare, not even knowing who she was. That totally set the tone for their relationship and their banter was pretty funny. The mystery was good. The author did a great job giving us some clues and holding others till the very end. Overall, I enjoyed the time I spent on Emerald Lake.
This story was very religious. I liked this story and didn't really feel like I was being preached at, even though there is are a lot of spiritual messages tied into the story. Faith, forgiveness, and repentance are central messages throughout. I also really liked these characters...there are a lot of them, but all of them are well thought out and tie into the story.
Content: Clean, but there's an attempted rape, and lots of murders Language: Clean Religious: See above, but this is a very Christian read
I have to admit, at first the plot seemed slow to me and I wasn’t sure I wanted to spend six hours with this book. But I like the author, so I decided to stick with it. I’m glad I did! Brec’s and Molly’s love story was fun to read. Their relationship grew as the mystery grew and as his relationship with the Lord grew as well. Julie did a wonderful job of intertwining all these plots together to give us a full story, lovely characters and a gorgeous setting. Well done!
Julie Lessman has truly proven with this story that she can indeed write romance and mystery together (half and half). There were so many things to love about this book. I loved the idea of the Lake Loon Lads and how the best friends grew up together and impacted the story. I loved the feisty Miss Lilly. And the banter was great along with the nicknames Brec and Molly called each other. It as was also great to see Cat and Chase again in this story. There were times though when I had trouble keeping the characters straight (there were so many). And Molly was somewhat aggressive and too strong in pushing her faith on Brec. I would have liked to have heard their plans for blending their futures, especially Brec's plans. I am anxious to see this series continue and especially to read Sloan's story.
Though this is the author's first foray into romantic suspense, there are many elements we have come to expect in a book by Julie Lessman. Some of the characters we met first in the Isle of Hope series so it was easy to make a connection. There is almost as much emphasis on faith as there is on the mystery and romance. I think there is more mystery than suspense that was wrapped up well at the end. I enjoyed The Secret of Emerald Cottage.
I never read anything by this author before, but thought this first suspense novel of hers sounded good. It was slower paced, and longer than most books I read, but I really enjoyed it, and it gave the author more time for character development. Molly was a great and likable character, and bad boy Brec was even more so, and the book gave him plenty of time to change into the kind of man he should be. I highly recommend it.
This is a contemporary with a loose connection to some of the characters in the author's Isle of Hope series. I was not a fan of that series, so it's probably not surprising that this new "mystery" was not for me. I never really felt connected to Brec and Molly, and just had to muddle my way through to the end. The Irish brogue seemed so fake and overdone for a man that grew up in the USA. In addition, I found the constant quoting of scripture and "preachy" dialogue caused me a lot of eye rolls. I'm not sure if the author intends to write more contemporary novels or not, but I just can't recommend her current contemporary offerings. I love her O'Connor series and feel she would do better to stick with the historical genre. 2.5 stars, rounded up to 3 stars.
I had a hard time putting this book down until it all been resolved throwing in some twists and turns along the way. I don’t always get a lot of time to read during the week so I’m grateful for a chunk of time this Saturday afternoon to really get lost in the story and finish it. The message of forgiveness and not holding onto bitterness is very powerful. I have a few more of Julie’s books on my kindle which i hope to read this year. Happy reader here 😃📚📚
