Set on a terraformed planet, lightyears from Earth, in humanity's distant future, 'Weaves of Empire' tells the story of Bess, a girl found to have the potential to manipulate aether. Taken from poverty at the extremity of Tarlonin's New Dominions, she is brought to the centre of the Empire to become a mage.
In the Way of Sacrifice Bess, is found to have the potential to be a mage and becomes the Apprentice of Mage Michael Firestorm who is forced to hand her over to an enemy of his, Mage Marin Seafarer for transport to Tar Eylia, the first city of the Tarlonin Empire, to be trained at the Tarlonin Academy of Magic. Marin does all she can to destroy Bess' opportunity and succeeds by denying Bess the ability to access the aether which exists within her and having her expelled from the academy as faulty. Unfortunately, on the way, Bess has made enemies and these eventually catch up with her. Capturing her, they abuse and torture her until she is on the verge of death. As she lies on a pile of corpses, thrown out to die, Bess finally has the breakthrough and gains access to her aether.
The Way of Justice tells of her journey to deal with those who tortured and abused her.
[Spoiler (maybe): Weaves of Empire is set in the same universe as The Stork Tower. The connections will eventually become more apparent; the intervening years will be fleshed out in other series (not yet written).]
Too much self righteous crap. It's an issue every book this author writes, but this one seemed even worse than usual. Basically saying abortion is wrong, even when it was caused by rape.
Besides that, the book was okay. It was too slow paced story wise, the entire book is just one long thing about her planning and then executing her revenge. She murders tons of people, but abortion is wrong.

I had some issues with the previous book, as I felt the author overdid the abuse, but I really enjoyed this one and read from start to finish in one session.
It seems like a tough-ask for the author to write a novel composed totally of revenge scenarios without it being relentlessly dark. What mitigates this problem is the way Bess uses every opportunity to learn more about her magic and to develop new skills. It's mesmerizing.
I do question how someone with her rural background developed the wisdom of Solomon. But if we're going to make the protagonist inherently OP... wisdom is a nice attribute to focus on.
I'm eating this series up. Thankfully it's the weekend, so binge-reading is less disruptive to my life.
I enjoyed this tale of intrigue and vengeance. I liked how Bess evolved as character throughout the book. She went from a victim to the victor and eliminating those who would do her and her beloved s harm. I really enjoyed the various capers she pulled in her quest for justice. I also liked how she was able to stay true to how she was and help others along the way. Looking forward to part three.
It’s disgusting that the main character was raped by her father, brothers, and villains. I’m not sure why she wanted to birth such vile offspring, (sentimentality of women) but at least she’s a bad ass who can kill and fight. She’s not as ruthless and vicious for my tastes. I think she should kill her shitty Master and certainly kill Mage Marin and all the professors and students who tormented her. She should have killed all the maggots and ants who helped her enemies.
I normally don't like books that have a heavy slant toured revenge but you can't help but love Bess , she has a wonderful personality and her caricature and since of honor very admirable. The overall story is very interesting I look forward to the next book.
This is an amazing series and is highly recommended!! Can't wait for the next one in the series. I don't want to give anything away so I won't add too much here other than this series advances a crazy interesting world with magic, fascinating humans with all their faults, lots of dry humor, and a brilliant main character. Tons of action too!!!
This story of a young farm girl going to mage school as a apprentice of the most hated mage in the empire was Fantastic. All the teachers causes her to fail, yet after she gets beaten she becomes the most powerful mage of the empire.
