Brooklyn Sloane has left her job as a consultant for the FBI to take on her first cold case in the private sector. Doing so allows her the freedom to work the one case she’s never professionally been allowed to touch – a ruthless serial killer, who just so happens to be her own brother.
Privately, she’s hunting her only sibling, but alongside her team, she’s seeking justice for those without a voice. But there is always the anomaly…
Seven arrests. Seven trials. Seven closed cases.
Brook has discovered one thread that ties them all together. Soon, as the investigation begins to unravel, the evidence all points to one disturbing truth – the real serial killer has never stopped hunting innocent victims, planting evidence, and causing others to pay for his violent crimes. Unfortunately, he isn’t Brook’s only concern. As she divulges deeper into her brother’s reign of torment, she finds herself falling down a dark rabbit hole where she lands on a web of deceit. Who wins is unknown, for their chilling lies can make for very convincing truths.
Kennedy Layne is a USA Today bestselling author. She draws inspiration for her romantic thrillers in part from her not-so-secret second life as a wife of a retired Marine Master Sergeant. He doubles as her critique partner, beta reader, and military consultant. Kennedy also has a deep love for cozy mysteries, thrillers, and basically any book that can keep her guessing until the very end. They live in the Midwest with their menagerie of pets. The loyal dogs and mischievous cats appreciate her writing days as much as she does, usually curled up in front of the fireplace.
Seven murdered women, seven men convicted. One serial killer whose gotten away with it all.
Former FBI Profiler Brooklyn Sloane was made an offer from General Graham Elliot to partner with him in the private sector and co-own S&E Investigations. Their first case is Brook and her new team figuring out who the real killer is of the seven women, one of whom was Graham's daughter.
Her team are all characters we met in the first book. Bit Nowacki – hacker extraordinaire, Theo Neville – former FBI agent who lost an eye in previous book, and Sylvie – former FBI analyst. They are a great group of characters that are smart and work well together.
Brook's excellence at being a profiler of killers doesn't come from an education learned in a classroom, its comes from being the sister of a serial killer who started his murderous spree with her childhood best friend. He then also brutally murdered her best friend in college because she made the mistake of having a friend which he doesn't allow. Brook worries for her new colleagues and Graham that starting S&E Investigations will put a target on their backs as she knows Jacob is never far and always watching.
The writing in this series is so tight and concise. How Brook and team went from only knowing that there were seven victims and the men convicted of their murders to how they were connected and following many trails until find the killer. Its a thrilling journey you enjoy being on.
The anticipation of the eventual showdown between Brook and her serial killer brother Jacob really kicks into overdrive by the end of this book. I fear for who will come out alive.. Cant wait till the next book!!
This one started out slow for me. While the characters weren't new, the office was, so getting the dynamics of that all laid out took a bit of time. The crime that Brook and her team looked into was bad. I hated that one petty person could have fooled so many people for so long, hated it even more that they took the easy way out.
I did enjoy seeing the team work together and start to gel. I have a feeling they will only get better as they get to know each other better and become more familiar.
I thought I was seeing Jacob everywhere and he wasn't. So surprised where he showed up at the, also very stunned at other buttons he pushed on people around Brook. There is such a cat and mouse game going between the siblings, that once the show down happens it will be good to read about.
A read that slowly but steadily draws you in and doesn’t rush—instead, it takes its time building up the characters, letting you get to know them layer by layer. Creating a sense of anticipation that keeps you turning the pages the plot pulls you deeper as things become more intense. By the end, you're left wanting more. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book as the stakes continue to rise.
Evil touches our lives every day. We don’t always see it, hear it, or touch it…but it’s there all the same. Follow along as Brooklyn Sloane, a former consultant for the FBI, takes on cold cases that are thrown on a random desk to gather dust without a second thought to the victims’ families left behind. She knows all too well what it’s like to be the one left with nothing but unanswered questions. Her renowned career as a federal profiler was built on apprehending only the most notorious serial killers who made the front page of the national newspapers. Unfortunately, she failed to bring to justice the one who stained her soul—her very own brother. He is still out there hunting, but she fully intends to be the one who ends his reign of terror.
Longing For Sin is the second book in the Touch of Evil Series by Kennedy Layne. Touch of Evil is a gripping blend of psychological intrigue, suspense, and raw emotion and follows Brooklyn Sloane, a former FBI consultant turned private investigator, as she tackles cold cases and confronts her own haunting past. Brooklyn is a standout FMC – she’s intelligent, determined, and yet deeply flawed. Her relentless pursuit of justice, particularly as she hunts for her estranged brother, who is a cunning serial killer, definitely added extra intrigue as well as a deeply personal layer to the overarching story. Ms. Layne seems to easily manage to delve into Brooklyn’s psyche while also maintaining the tension of the mysteries. Each book is a carefully crafted puzzle, with twists and turns that kept me guessing until the very end. The dark, moody tone is balanced by moments of vulnerability and humanity, making the characters feel real and very relatable. Ms. Layne’s writing is sharp and evocative, painting vivid scenes that draw you into the world of crime and justice. It’s a must-read for anyone who enjoys a story that challenges the mind and tugs at the heartstrings. Prepare to be captivated - and maybe even a little haunted - by this unforgettable series. Happy Reading…
I'm honestly considering making a Pinterest board for this series because the descriptions are so good and I want to make a visualization, like the team's building, solan's apartment, the outfits, it's great!
I love Sloan so much. I love everything interaction she has with people.
Oh, and the team! this book (and hopefully the others to come) is scratching that itch for a good team in a thriller series, usually teams are background people but this one they're so involved and it's refreshing. Also love that it's characters from the first book.
Bit is the man; he's my favorite after Elliot. Elliot, I don't know but I get giddy with any scenes with him. Sylvie is a tea lover after my own heart (rooting for her and Bit <3) , Theo gives me older brother vibes. all I'm saying is no one on this damned team better die, I will riot.
I can't tell if there is romance in the play for Sloan, Theo might be a possibility but I kind of hope not just because I don't know how I'd feel about it but honestly it doesn't seem like it. I feel like Elliot is a possibility, but I don't know since everything with his daughter and wife. It's random and has no hold but I'm still holding out for the reporter who has her number from book one, I think his name was Matt but it's almost 12pm so I'm blanking.
I feel a little wrong for saying that Jacob is one of my favorite characters (like it goes Sloan, Jacob, Elliot as my top 3.), but I love every bit of information we get, and Sloan gets, plus the rare chapters we get from him.
Honestly these books have been a treat to read and I'm eager to dive into the next one.
This is the 2nd in the series about Brooklyn Sloane, who used to work as a consultant for the FBI. She has the ability to solve crimes involving serial killers by her profiles.
Brook also has a secret that has come out. Her brother, Jacob, who is a serial killer and has been stalking her all her life since Brook knows his secrets. Now, she has been hired to run an investigation agency, with one of the best teams available to help her. A computer hacker is at the top of her team list and can get into any information he needs.
This case she was hired for is a General's daughter that was killed and her boyfriend was prosecuted and sent to prison. The General never has believed that he was responsible and has hired and set up Brook in this investigation agency to find out who the real killer is.
An exciting story that will have you turnings those pages!! Always a surprise as to who the serial killer is!!
If you enjoy a good mystery with twists and turns, you will enjoy reading Longing for Sin. This book follows Brook Sloane, who has left the FBI where she was a Profiler. Now she has set up a private investigative firm with the help of General Elliot, who wants her to find the real killer of his daughter. So Brook's first case with the help of hacker BIT, FBI agents Theo and Sylvie start working the case. Soon they realize that the General's daughter was not the first victim for her killer. Alos, we find out the Brook's brother is a serial killer named Jacob Walsh, and Sloane hopes to capture him. As the case for the General continues you see how the killer chose his victims and how he set up the men prosecuted for the murders. Now can Brooke and her team find the murderer before he kills again and set someone else for the crime or will they catch the killer in time?
Brook has left the FBI and has agreed to run S&E Investigations. Their first case is to look at seven cases and see if there is any connection. Men are in jail for each murder but General Elliott, silent partner of S&E, doesn't believe the man in jail for his daughter's murder actually did it. Brook brings in three more people to work with her. Her brother Jacob, a killer who has evaded capture, is never far from her mind and she's still determined to take him down.
This one has more point of views. Suspenseful. Brook is a loner, because of her brother, and makes sure she doesn't get close to anyone, which to me makes her seem standoffish. But I understand why she is that way. I'm sorry if this doesn't make sense but I'm afraid I'll give something away.
Longing for Sin is the next book in this fast paced and well thought out series❣️
Brooklyn/Brook has moved from the FBI as a profiler to the private sector. Establishing a investigation consulting firm for cases involving serial killers with her new silent partner, Graham…it soon becomes clear that the case of his daughter is more complicated and the team sets about finding out who the unsub is. However, Brook had more problems than finding an unsub, she’s also trying to find and bring her own serial killer brother to justice😳
A fantastic story and I absolutely cannot wait for the next book😍
Brooklyn Sloane has left the FBI to start a consulting firm that will work on cold cases. The first case will be solving the murder of her silent partner's daughter. A number of people have been framed for murders they did not commit while the murderer is still at large. Brook goes back over everything and is able to solve the case with her new team. We get to see Brook in a different role. It is interesting how she created her team. I enjoyed getting to know the team members. Brook's process is fascinating. I enjoyed the conclusion of the book. I would highly recommend this book and series.
Some characters from book one are back and have formed the S&E investigations with Brooke. The FBI is still present trying to find her brother and her team is on the search for the killer of Grahams daughter and maybe others. The story is multi tiered and full of details and action. The personalities of the characters are well developed and continued to evolve throughout the book. The connections that Brooke made and the steps her brother took to find people that mean something to Brooke are fascinating, especially with that mocking cliffhanger. Can’t wait for the next book!
okay so I am enjoying these books but by god there is so many characters to remember, when the murderer is revealed I end up having to go through the xray to remember who it is so it takes the surprise element away a little bit.
I have noticed in both books now she goes from literally having no clue who the unsub is to being so 100% certain of them in a matter of minutes With not really much explanation how she got there and then is all aw I should have seen this? your meant to be the best profiler there is HOW DIDNT YOU SEE IT?
Brook is so cunning and has all kinds of flaws. She has assembled a team of misfits who are perfect together for her new business of catching serial killers and closing cold cases. Her brother, a serial killer, is near by watching and hating her perfect life. Looking forward to the next books to see more of all of these characters. So rich with intrigue. But I don’t get much sleep because I can’t put these books down!!
Really like this story with Brook and the rest of the characters. I am glad I found this author, he really knows how to write a story and make you feel you are right there. Not many authors can do that. I have already started the 3rd one and it has my attention in the first paragraph. I am rooting for Graham with Brook. I know he is a little older then her but there is just something there between them.
I’m loving this series so far. It is so good. A continuing background story but different cases to solve in each book. Really great side characters that are fun and provide some levity in the dark storyline. Brook is awesome and I can’t wait to read more and to figure out what the deal is with general Elliott. I’m sure there is more to him than we know.
Kept me guessing until the end. S&E looks like it’s gonna be a great team. Each member brining their own expertise to the group. It’s a bit wordy at time, certain phrases are repeated as the scenes are set but all in all, I’m Hooked. Going to continue the binge read with “Awakening Sin”.
Brook is amazing.. I see her and Graham being an item one day.. But questions remain, how did two children raised in the same house end up on both ends of the good vs evil spectrum? Is Jacob broken or did she get all the love and he got none? Is that why he kills women who look like Brook? Profiling is an art.. Brook is the artist.
The book was really good! I feel like I can’t write a whole bunch because of spoilers, but I am very excited for the rest of the series. The readability is wonderful. It’s easy to get through, it’s easy to read and also makes you want to keep reading, if you’re looking for a series that isn’t a series, this is the series for you. It really doesn’t feel like a series to me which is nice.
Brook Sloan is a fascinating heroine. She's strong, fierce, and smart .she picks up on clues and once she allows them to percolate a bit, she follows them right to the villain.
Evil takes all forms, many you would never imagine! It takes a special kind of person to involve themselves in cases that even hardened, experienced law enforcement find difficult to deal with! Brook is special!
This is an excellent psychological thriller. Being the sister of a known (yet uncaptured) serial killer gives Brooklyn Sloan an edge. In depth characters, twists and turns, and a fantastic plot made this a great read!
Dialogue is smooth, the scenes blend seamlessly, the plot is consistent and characters are flawless. Kennedy Layne is one of a kind writer. If you can stand the gore, Ms Layne won’t disappoint.
I've finished 1st two books of this series. Ms. Laynes writing is not boring. I find myself reading faster to find out what happens. Only 2other writers have caused me to speed read. JD Robb and Robert Ludlum
Longing for Sin(Touch of Evil Book 2) by Kennedy Layne was just as fascinating and hard to put down as her Touch of Evil Book 2. Really makes it easy to live vicariously thru her characters!
2nd in a series that started with a vengeance. Love the characters in this one and hope they continue through the series. Bit being my favorite. It was a so so read.
Brook Is working for Graham. She has brought on her own team. They work find a murderer of 7 people. Little did they know they had been talking to him all along.
