Quickly approaching her 20th birthday, Cara Vacher must choose between being a Quest Giver or a Quest taker, as all Palanitians must. Her choice will define the rest of her life and risk her crossing paths with the most violent, power-hungry, and brutish of creatures: players. How will Cara survive in a world plagued by undying adventures long enough to find her missing sister? Meanwhile, Ivan just wanted to enjoy Alphabalde one last time before the server goes offline forever and takes an easy quest to find an NPC. But every time he finds her, he dies before he can complete the quest. What's so special about this Cara Vacher anyway?
10 stars for the fantasticly fleshed-out characters of Cara and Ivan and how well they grow through the story, and -5 stars for the ending which left me a blubbery, tear-filled bag of sad for hours after I finished.
In all seriousness, this book is a sweet, short gamelit story with fairly mild RPG elements (most of which don't really impact the story in any meaningful way but are still nice for flavor text). It's fairly light on action overall, more focused on the development of the two MCs and their evolving relationship to each other.
What a great story—well-crafted and fast moving! I kept reading to see what was going to happen. I felt like I knew Ivan and Cara, the main characters, and really cared about them. Just the right amount of humor in the book made it a fun read, but there were plenty of exciting, action-packed scenes too. I highly recommend reading this well written and enjoyable book.
