A SKINNED YOUNG MAN. A MISSING CHILD. A HAUNTED DETECTIVE WHOSE FAMILY ARE IN DANGER.
When Devon and Cornwall Police begin to investigate the strangulation and skinning of a young man, they discover the remains of a missing child nearby.
Having recently arrived from London, DCI Peter Moone is put in charge of the case alongside the tough talking local DS Mandy Butler. They soon find themselves sinking deep into a dark world of child abuse and murder.
With his last case in London still haunting him, Moone feels ill-equipped to solve the investigation and ends up seeking help from sinister quarters. But soon the detective wonders if he’ll even live to regret his decision.
This was the first book written by Mark Yarwood that I have read and I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised. I found it a little bit of a slow burner to begin with but it built up well throughout and was quite tense and exciting towards the end. It came across as really well written and researched and I think that it could be interesting to see where the series goes from here.
A real surprise. It was far better than what I expected. Protagonist DCI Peter Moone and sidekick DS Mandy Butler are an amazing team. DS Butler was clearly the best part of the book. Mandy and her exploits really brought this novel into a higher level. This is book one in a series. I'm really looking forward to second book of series. I hope Acting DI Mandy butler continues to push this series. A must read. check it out.
Interesting story-line, somewhat thinly-clothed. A wider variety of adjectives and adverbs would add verisimilitude, and a closer attention to detail in describing locations. The author has a story he is keen to tell, but he also needs a good editor (seemingly hard to find), to help fashion it - so here we have, again, a fairly bog-standard modern police procedural.
Absolutely loved this! It’s set in Plymouth, it’s clever, witty, well written, fast paced and has a great storyline! Can’t wait to read the next one! 🤩
I liked the pace, the characters and the story. Obviously not the villains! It kept my attention for several days and I'm going to get the next one now.......
This is a brilliant read I would give it more than 5 stars if I could set in my city of Plymouth it was great having the writer take you around the city and knowing where the characters were.
A new author for me and one I will be reading more of. A very good well written book with a sensitive subject matter handled really well. Fabulous characters in Moone and the fiesty Butler. Loved it
DCI Peter Moore has just moved to Plymouth from London when a mutilated body of a man is discovered. Next to the body they find the bones of a young boy. Are they the bones of missing 11 year old Danny Sawyer. Moore and his team now have two cases to solve as it gets more complicated. An entertaining modern mystery.
I did enjoy this book, after much thought I have awarded it 5 stars. However that is a bit generous. The characters are interesting, the plot is good and the setting is excellent. But, but I say one of the police detectives is way beyond just outlandish. You will have to read it to see what I mean. Having said that it is a very good read and I will be reading the next installment now.
I wasn't sure whether I like this or not. The main characters are the usual flawed characters. The police not particularly competent. The characters grew on me. But not sure still.
this book lived up to its name of Bad but any nmber of words could be substitued for "time" examples include narrative, characterisation and plotting. If the real police force is an inept and seld-harming as this we are in real trouble
