Some things are inevitable, even with a fated mate.
As the future alpha of the Silver Wolves, my life was carefully planned: stay hidden and learn to fight. But that didn't happen. My pack was slaughtered and now I’m running for my life.
In my search for safety, I discover something else.
My fated mate.
The handsome jerk alpha can offer me something that no one else can--protection.
The more I try to fight our mate bond, the more fate pushes us together, but I fear the price may be too much for both of us.
As a hidden enemy hunts me, difficult decisions must be made. Choices that will alter my life forever or end it completely.
Reading has always been one of my favorite hobbies, even as a little girl. When I was a toddler, my parents would read stories to me over and over. I would hear them so often that I had the books memorized and could recite the story word by word.
My favorite genres are fantasy, paranormal, and contemporary romance. So of course that's what I'm inclined to write.
I have a husband, two young daughters, and a mini Australian Shepherd. I've lived in Tennessee the majority of my life and love the state.
I'm extremely addicted to caffeine and enjoy drinking coffee and lattes. I am so pleased that you stopped by my page! Please feel free to follow or contact me at the following pages -
So Cade why would you purposely torment and torture and intentionally give yourself secondhand embarrassment if you KNEW how bad it was going to be?!!
SEE, THERE'S THIS INTERESTING LITTLE THING CALLED BOREDOM. Today, I was bored. Was it because I was dutifully ignoring all my responsibilities? Possibly. Was it because it was a praticularly hot day and thus I was rendered productiveLESS? Definitely. Where, you may ask, am I going with this? I don't know. I've lost my point so I'm going to have to make a new one.
SO! ANOTHER THING!!! This book received not one star, buT TWO because of one thing and that thing is its ✨premise✨.
THE THING ABOUT THIS STORY IS, EVERYTHING SUCKED. That includes the characters, the romance, the plot, and the setting. Nothing was working for this except the idea.
And you, a tiny peppa pig might come bumbling up to me to ask, "Cade! Aren't plot and premise the same thing?!"
NO MY LITTLE TINY PEPPA PIG. THEY AREN'T.
Premise is more like the idea or the concept. PLOT IS THE ARRANGEMENT OF THE STORY. SEE, IT WAS A REALLY INTERESTING IDEA, BUT THE EXECUTION SLASH DELIVERY JUST KINDA WENT 📉📉📉📉
But see I've read other Jen L. Grey works to know that this is a common theme! DO I STILL FALL FOR IT EVERY TIME LIKE AN IDIOT HOPING THAT SOMETHING CHANGES, MAYBE THE CHARACTERS AND PLOT BECOME TOLERABLE?!! YES. YES I DO. AM I HOPING TO SOMEDAY START A NEW LEAF AND FLIP SOME DAMN PAGES?! NO. NO I'M NOT. I WILL KEEP READING JEN L. GREY BOOKS UNTIL SHE RELEASES ONE THAT ISN'T HALF BAD.
THEN I WILL COMMEND MYSELF (and jen l grey ofc) FOR HAVING MADE IT THIS FAR LIKE THIS TAKES PERSEVERANCE AND EFFORT AND ALL THOSE SYNONYMOUS WORDS 😤
That being said, fair warning to all: Don't read this unless you're a self proclaimed condoner of girl-on-girl hate, lukewarm writing, romance subplot overthrowing the plot hierarchy and crowning itself reigning supreme MAIN plot, and last but not least, love triangle except it falls apart and was it ever really a love triangle in the first place?
There wasn't any world building, no character building, no relationship building. There wasn't much but a sliver of a plot that we know nothing about and a few characters thrown at us along with a mate bond. Disappointing read.
After seeing some of the reviews on this, I had to reconsider my opinion. I still like the book, I just see why it’s not the best opener to the series. I wanted to go through a reread of this book verse since it is one of my absolute favorites, and I read through most of the trilogies set in this world.
Shadow City: Silver Wolf is the first one that happens, chronologically, so I started that one. The book opens with a banger, but after that, it slows down, and it’s just exactly that…slow.
Sterlyn, for the most part, I liked how her character was written. She is strong, strategic, and knows how to be a leader. But it’s not her character that I have problems with, it’s the pacing of the story.
It’s just a bunch of wolf shifters attacking her, and she happens to find her fated mate in the process of it all. I also didn’t buy the romance either. Griffin was a stuck up douche, and only fell for Sterlyn because she “opened up his eyes.”
I don’t get why Sterlyn would fall for someone like that, it’s entirely out of her personality, but alright. Great world, nice intro, but I can definitely tell you that the later books are way better. This series has other books set in the same world, and those are leaps and bounds better than the first series.
It’s hard to know where to start with reviewing this book, so I guess I’ll just rant.
There is absolutely no character development. Sterlyn ends up the same at the end of the book as she is at the beginning. This is probably because she is the definition of a Mary Sue character, leaving her with little to no space to grow. We are constantly told how she’s stronger than other wolves with better senses, faster healing, and abilities that other wolves don’t have. She rarely admits to character faults, she has little to no motive, and of course the two most important boys in town instantly fall in love with her.
Even our secondary protagonists come across entirely wrong. Killian, finds a young girl drowning in a river after being chased by the people she tells him just killed her family. She needs to hide, so he takes her to his home where he immediately uses the situation to his advantage. He immediately betrays her trust by telling his friends about her and uses the fact that she needs a place to stay and a new ID to get her to act as his girlfriend. When she asks why, he begins sobbing and brings up his dead family, so of course she agrees. I remind you that she has been hunted and seen her whole pack murdered this very same day. If his actions seem like emotional manipulation to you, that occurred to me too. I wont even mention how uncompelling of a love interest Griffin is.
There is very little to no plot. After her pack are all killed, does she spend the remainder of the book trying to achieve vengeance, or on the run, or doing anything? Not really, she goes and works in a coffee shop. She spends the majority of her time doing nothing. She decides to shack up with some guy she stumbled into, presumably not far from where she was pursued and despite her fears of being discovered, she barely tries to conceal her identity. This isn’t how someone on the run would act.
For the most part the logical consistency is okay, but I am left wondering how with her superior senses, she is able to get jumped by someone in a bar and in the shop at the end of the book and not hear them coming or smell the different scent? How could nobody be aware of the silver wolves existence after a thousand years? They literally live about 20 miles away! I guess these people don’t get out much.
The magic system is given absolutely no thought. Why is Sterlyn so much more powerful than other wolves? Well, it’s just because of the power of the moon and that’s all the explanation you get. Wow. What do we learn about other shifter races? Very little. Not only this, but we only learn about Sterlyn’s powers when she is in a tense situation, like the author just put them in for her own convenience in the moment, rather than taking the time to establish them prior.
By far the worst part of the book for me was the writing. A person may miss all the previous points and still enjoy a book, but there is no excuse for bad use of English. It was like the whole book was written in one go and not reread for improvement. The use of ‘asshole’ as an insult is incredibly repetitive and ‘dickwads’ is just infantile.
I could go on and on, providing examples of what I mean, but I think you get the idea at this point. There is absolutely nothing in this book that makes me want to read the next installment.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Listen I was bored at work and saw it was free so I was like hmmm I know it’s gonna be cringy and bad but it can’t be too bad. Yeaaaa…. Where was the plot? Where was the character development? Where was any decent writing? I think I’ve read better Wattpad books about Harry styles than this.
Very new adult/YA... Don't understand the complete slaughter that went on. Did not make sense. This is a meh for me. However, I did like how the h is very good at kicking ass, more so than her respective male alphas.
I certainly wouldn't encourage my teens to read it
Totally stereotyped story & characters. Sterlyn is a 17 year old bad azz who can incapacitate a bear shifter by herself - of course.
She's smarter & a better fighter than her 2 male alpha friends - of course.
She's also beautiful, brilliant & Special™ - of course.
Honestly, I don't actually mind predictability & even mary sue protagonists IF the story is told well enough, but it's only ok with a lot of unbelievable.
Killian & Griffith would be likeable except that they're apparently manwhores, so just eww. Came across like dogs that'll hump anything.
Also, pet peeve, it's totally not believable when the reader can pick up on something looong before the supernatural characters it affects do. How can they be so clueless about their fated mate bond?
And in the book's finale, we get a mate bond consummation scene that isn't much more romantic than the dog humping alphas where an inexperienced virgin takes over like a porn star. Just ridiculous.
Then she just mentally closes the door on the pack bond she'd spent a good part of the book fretting about.
I'll give the author a 2nd star for keeping me reading to find out who & why, but by the end, I found that I'd had enough.
***CONTENT *** Sex: two of the main characters sleep around a lot, protagonist is a virgin, but then has a fairly graphic sex scene (about R-level)
Language: moderate number of swears + 18 f-bombs
Religion: about 2 dozen abuses of the Lord's Name as an exclamation, though at least none as curses, fwiw
Broken Mate is the first book in the Shadow City Series so don't be surprised that it ends on a cliffhanger (and oh what a cliff it ends on.)
This series starts off action packed and continues throughout the book. Even though Sterlyn has been training all of her life to lead, that training didn't teach her what was necessary to live outside of their pack. Left with only the parting words from her father, Sterlyn takes off to Shadow City for protection from their enemies. The journey isn't easy and filled with one surprise after another. Read to find out what Sterlyn does to stay safe and to protect those she loves. Expect villians at every turn, deceit, unexpected friendships, lies, and of course love.
I like that there are other breeds of wolves in this one - the only thing I didn’t really like was that it felt like there were so much other species that didn’t really fit the story but also added to it? Idk parts of this story almost felt like something was missing but overall a good start to the series and really good to listen to while working!!
I listened to this one on tempt. The characters are new adult and act like 18 - 19 year old kids which make it feel more believable and interesting but also a little irksome because of their immaturity. Overall, I’m pretty impressed with Jen’s writing and I’m looking forward to trying the next one.
Sterlyn is a born female alpha. Daughter to the alpha of the Silver Wolf pack. They are believed to be extinct, but the pack has just been well hidden these past few decades. Silver Moon wolves have more power than normal wolves. They used to be guardians and protectors. But they were being used by the corrupted supernaturals in Shadow City. A “city of refuge” for shifters and supernaturals of all kinds. But some wanted to use their power for evil, so they removed themselves from the city and went into hiding. But someone knows about them. Someone knows about her. And they’ve slaughtered her entire pack to get to her.
I really enjoyed this book. I thought Sterlyn was a no nonsense powerful main character. She chances upon Killian, who really saves her life. He the young alpha to the Shadow Ridge Pack. He lost his family a few years ago himself, so the two of them bond over that shared trauma. Initially, I wanted them together because he’s such a nice guy, but he sees her like a sister, and she feels the same. Enter his best friend, Griffin. Typical hot, arrogant man whore alpha. His father was the alpha of Shadow City, but Griffin doesn’t feel he’s ready to take over yet. So he has allowed his beta to run things while he goes to college and tries to adjust to his new normal.
There’s definitely intrigue in the air and I find the storyline and world building very interesting. Of course I love a jealous mean girl, and there’s one here, and she has staked her claim on Griffin. I can’t wait for that encounter when she finds out that Sterlyn, aka “Dove” is Griffin’s fated mate. Haha. One thing that is different in this book than other PNR books I’ve read, is that Sterlyn is a better fighter than both Killian and her mate, Griffin. Her dad wanted her to be prepared so she had daily fight training. I love me a kickass female. Especially one that doesn’t remind us constantly how strong and powerful they are. She knows she powerful, she’s doesn’t need to say it.
Sure, there a few plot holes but I think things will get fleshed out in subsequent books. This is not a RH or ménage story, and “steam” level is very low. It does end on a cliff hanger. I’m definitely grabbing that book because I’m dying to see how this all plays out.
The story was a bit short and felt a bit forced at some points, but it is still a good read. I will be continuing on to the next book in the series. So far my favorite character is Rosemary. I'm curious to where she stands in the plot. I hope the next book goes a little more in depth on who is behind the attacks and touches more on Griffin's and Dove/ Sterlyns relationship.
Not a horrible read but not the best. Typical fated mates with the best friend of the guy she’s “dating”.
Main character has a tragic beginning with all her pack and family being killed and then two special men come into her life who accept her etc..for only being 240 it was an easy read for around 3 hours.
Looks like Jen has another fantastic series on her hands with the Shadow City: Silver Wolf series. The first book, Broken Mate, started off explosive and it just kept going from there. The story follows Sterlyn, who is a silver wolf which is a rare breed of protector wolves who are stronger and faster than normal wolves not to mention their senses are heightened and they also have a few extra tricks up their sleeves. The first scene starts with Sterlyn running away from the people who decimated her pack. She's the last silver wolf and now completely on her own. She needs to find out who her pursuers are and why they killed her pack.
Sterlyn is or was an alpha heir of a very special pack so she has been training for alpha every since she was young and she took her role seriously, Sterlyn is different from a lot of people, her rational and logical thinking along with her combative training is what helped her get away from her attackers. It's interesting seeing how her mind works, Sterlyn thinks like an alpha and is very skilled at fighting not only in wolf form but human as well and she knows how to use weapons. Being an alpha heir, Sterlyn's personality was very much formed by her alpha-father, she is kind, caring, but direct and knows her worth, she values human life and is very observant. I wish I could say that she kept this up but Sterlyn has been understandably devastated by the loss of her pack, she is out of sorts and is trying her best just to survive because her attackers are still out there. While she doesn't let what happened to crush her, Sterlyn is most definitely feeling the loss but she's also surviving by not only staying alive but she's not giving in.
It's only with the help of Killian who finds her during her escape that she has a safe place to stay. While Killian has a player reputation he is truly a good guy and helps Sterlyn in her time of need. They form a bond pretty quickly but it's not in the way you think, they both have been through some things and lean on each other for support. I find their relationship so adorable and I'm glad they have each other. I've only seen the good in Killian and I'm disregarding the player status but he is struggling with his role after a devastating event but I can't wait to see him step up because I know he's gonna be great. Then there is Griffin, Killian's best friend, alpha, and absolute player. Griff doesn't come off well at first and Sterlyn is in deep denial about her attraction to him but somehow Griff manages to show he isn't a complete jerk and Sterlyn only wants to strangle him half the time. Turns out Griffin isn't as bad as he first appears and I'm looking forward to seeing more of him with Sterlyn.
I love Sterlyn and Killian, and Griffin grew on me. Rosemary who is a student at Shadow Ridge University and somehow gets mixed up in Sterlyn's craziness, I don't know what to feel about her, she seems like she might be a key character in the story but she is not the soft and cuddly type of character. Rosemary is straightforward and a little harsh but she seems to be good. Something between her and Sterlyn clicks not exactly friendship but mutual respect, I have a feeling that she and Sterlyn could be friends so only time will tell.
The people who attacked Sterlyn are still out there and while we know why we don't know who. So basically everyone is a suspect not only because she doesn't know who is after her but Sterlyn has to keep her status as a silver wolf a secret. The story is coming together really nicely because I think something shady is going on in Shadow City, things aren't adding up, there are one too many coincidences, and a few characters are more than a little shady.
Broken Mate is an excellent start to the Shadow City: Silver Wolf series as a matter of fact I can already see a few spin-off series that can work but first we have to get through Silver wolf. Jen kinda did readers in because Broken Mate ended with one heck of a cliffhanger. I already have a theory about what happened but I can't wait to find out why and to see what happens next. I will be happily awaiting the next book, thinking up theories about how the story is going to go.
Sterlyn is a rare wolf in a world where her rarity is important but could also be a death sentence. She isn't near the neighborhood where her pack lives when a group of unknowns invades and slaughters the entire pack, and it isn't until she runs back to her home that she finds out they are looking for her specifically. When her father tells her to run, to escape, it takes all of her willpower to leave everyone behind to their own fate. However, it is in that escape that she meets the sexy guy who rubs her wrong in all the right ways. The two fight their bond even as she needs all the help she can get to keep her safe from those who haven't given up the hunt.
Usually, this author writes a heroine who has issues with weakness and has no idea what is going on around her or what she should do. But beginning with Jade in the last series, she has been writing heroines who are already strong but have fallen into situations that pull them under and try to make them weak. Sterlyn is not only strong, but she's been learning to fight for herself to become the eventual alpha of her pack since she was young. The story begins with this strong young wolf fighting for escape from an unknown adversary, and the fact that she is so tough makes it more exciting to watch her trying to escape the one thing that could be her greatest weakness - her fated mate. The twists and turns as they search for a way to navigate this new world they both inhabit now make for some fun humor and some serious obstacles. This is one of the best first books in a series by this author.
Oh boy oh boy, such an awesome, amazing yet intriguing book about a lone silver wolf connecting with two alphas in Shadow City and Shadow Ridge. I certainly feel for Dove loosing her entire pack needing to escape but ends up being rescued and bonded to another. Noting some loose ends which concludes with a cliffhanger of an ending. So I’m now waiting with baited breath on who’s now trying to capture little dove. I’ve an inclination on who the other person is so book 2 will lead me on the right pathway. Certainly a book recommendation for readers who love to read books on the supernatural
Kaboom!! This book starts with a bang and keeps on going. This poor girl has so much to handle in a small amount of time, it is enough to crush someone. She finds her mate while acting as someone else’s girlfriend. There are people after her and the only thing she gets from the conversations she hears it is someone who want to force her to mate and bear him children who will be silver wolves. At the end of the book someone drugs and kidnaps her. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book! Jen tells an awesome story.
What a way to start a series!! This one is definitely an emotional roller coaster! I love this author. And she never disappoints. I gotta say, I started the series thinking I’d love for Killian and Sterlyn to be a couple, but I think I like how it’s shaping up. Everyone needs an awesome best friend and griffin needed a reason to step up. Plus Rosemary might be my new favorite! I’m making this review quick because I’m dying to start book 2 cuz that ending literally has me on edge!!
Excellent start to the series of Shadow City: Silver wolf. Sterlyn/ Dove was to be the future Alpha of silver pack unfortunately disaster struck and sends Sterlyn barrelling down the river trying to survive. Meeting Killian fills the loss of her family and Griffiths her fated mate. But even having two Alpha's in her corner doesn't keep her safe. Great storyline with epic battles, heartfelt declaration of love and friendship, and found family. Ends on a cliffhanger. Highly recommended
There are no words to express the sheer scale of how heavy-handed this is written. There is not a single piece of subtlety in here. Everything is explained to the reader in painful detail regardless of how obvious it is. The author doesn't trust its readers to think even a foot ahead. Usually, I can tolerate this kind of condescending-feeling reading and it invites to turn off some of my higher thinking and just relax. But in this case, there is nothing left to think about or even just feel. Everything is matter-of-fact like some dry history book with the main purpose of conveying knowledge as efficiently as possible.
Beyond that, it seems decently written but unsurprisingly it's a very generic werewolf story as far as I can tell from the hour I spent with this.
This is a shame because I actually like what the author is doing here. The book tackles hard-to-talk-about topics like grief and trauma head-on with self-aware characters who don't stumble through the experience without any clue about what is going on. But again, it's done in this extremely heavy-handed way that comes across as very didactic. On the one hand, this categorically avoids tropes like the classic misunderstanding which I despise with a passion, but on the other hand, it makes the dialogue incredibly wooden and unnatural. The characters typically express their emotions in words instead of showing them for the most part which plays a big role in what makes the dialogue sound so artificial. So it's the classic show, don't tell problem. But it's not the narrator telling, it's the characters telling the reader through awkward dialogue.
My biggest problem that led me to drop the book is how easily the MC just moved on within like two days or so after everyone she knew was slaughtered and took on the role of college girlfriend. The author lets the characters talk about trauma and there are these "ah, btw, the MC is still traumatized, just so you don't forget" scenes every now and then. But the author utterly fails to convince me that her characters are real people with emotions. They read more like checklists given flesh or something.
I want to state first and foremost that I love the fact that Sterlyn was helped by a male and didn't fall into instalove with him but into a deep friendship. I love their chemistry together as friends. Damn! When Griffin shows up the sparks do fly. Sterlyn makes another unusual friend that comes to her aid more than once. So much was going on in this book and the ending leaves you wanting more.
I have been having this book in my Kindle for a while, and I want to read what I already have. - Now, the audiobook was a graphic description and was amazing! It's simply amazing. - The storyline and plot were bad but weren't amazing either. I don't think this series will be for me. But if you enjoy shifter, wevewolf in college setting, fated mates. This book will be for you.
I can summarize: Hot sexy personality-less hot guy womanizer that is hot and sexy meets up with other hot and sexy wolf lady who is super cool and can take care of herself. Everyone wants hot sexy female lead character including hot sexy male lead character, and despite her not needing any help, hot sexy male main character protects her because hot sexy people are fated to be together. Also lots of swearing. Did I mention they are all hot and sexy?
I’ll admit I hated Griffin for most of this book but he redeemed himself. I’m very suspicious about “Richard”, I’m very uncomfortable when he’s around…and probably for good reason right!😉 Can’t wait for book 2 to see if my hunch about the kidnapper is right or not.
Shape-shifters, primarily wolves, are embroiled in a power struggle. There’s a pack of ‘guns for hire’ which includes other shape-shifters, assassins, and just evil persons.
The story starts with a bang, shifts to survival, and then hums along to becomes a romance of sorts.
The talented full-cast of Graphic Audio makes this uneven paranormal thriller. A tighter plot and better developed characters would make me want to listen to the next in the series.
This didn't turn out how I expected. I love the relationship between Kilian and Dove. I didn't expect her to be mated to Gillian. The support provided from Rosemary the Angel was not a surprise. I can't wait to find out what happens in next t part of the novel. 😍
