Sadly barely 4 stars but giving it to her as I think the translation is more to blame. Pages of this volume felt OFF. Some lines didn't make sense and I was constantly looking to see if I missed a page. I feel this needed more content to make the panels flow better. It was very choppy. The art and story in general was good, but I was unsatisfied by the delivery of the volume. A lot is being added it (JUST HOW LONG WILL THIS SERIES BE?!) for what appears to be another major arc.
The Fights scene is great and the last couple (very short) chapters were cute but no laugh out loud or squeals from me and that I think is a first. I wanted more of her and Ren for sure.

2024-I think I appreciated it a little more on the re-read but still not a favorite volume. Things I liked: The things Ren says to Kyoko in the last few pages. Sir, you got a few reactions of shock from even me! I am curious about this new director and what his deal is. The art has greatly improved since earlier volumes. The bad is that this whole volume still read like someone was flipping channels. A glimpse here, a minute or two there, a random commercial... I still cannot express enough how it didn't flow well. Like maybe Nakamura was so pressured for these that she just handed over whatever panels she had finished and now we have to do without the rest or something.

This series has my entire heart. I’m so glad Kyoko’s luck continues, and that her talent was on display to capture the producer. Ren…that man is so annoying!!! I don’t even think he’s realized how much of Kuon he’s been letting out, and it’s everything to me. He knows exactly how to push Kyoko in the cutest way, and I’m still blushing!!!

This volume is full of so much good stuff! While we still don’t know what this Route project is and why it’s so secretive, or why the director insists no one sees his face, Moko has won her role, and Kyoko has also impressed him (and seen what he really looks like). I’m still not sure how that drama is going to play out but I guess we’ll find out soon.

We also get to see Kyoko excelling at her job again, which is so satisfying. Not only is she fierce and strong, she has great instincts for what the right move is. She can access the emotions she needs by relating them to things she’s felt, and that’s what makes them real. Her conversation with Moko about the challenges of filming out of order was interesting, and Koga’s comfort and advice to her after filming, when she’s still feeling emotional, was really kind and helpful. Also, he asks if she needs a ride home and he seems a little disappointed when she declines, based on how mean he is after. Is he starting to like her too?

As for Kyoko and Ren, clearly they wanted to see each other, and Yashiro had a convenient way to make that happen. I love When Ren teases Kyoko because she gets so flustered, and I love when he’s blunt with her about wanting to see her longer when she’s ready to leave. Honestly, I don’t see why they can’t see each other like this when they are free and admit to one another that they are dating, but apparently that’s too much?

Now that I’m caught up, I can’t believe I have to wait 6 months for the next volume. 😭 (Who am I kidding, you know I'm going to go read the scanlations online and then forget what happened by the time Vol 49 comes out lol.)

Leonard Herbert, like Lory, is an example of some of the stranger choices that Nakamura makes in her storytelling for Skip-Beat!. Dressing up like an immense version of Tuxedo Mask to go incognito? In what world (except this manga's) would this make the slightest amount of sense?

I've just got to roll with it to get to the parts of the story I appreciate more, which thankfully existed this time around, when they were rather lacking in vol. 47. We see Kyoko performing her role as the kunoichi Momiji, and her subsequently . Very cool!

And, as always, I love the scenes where Kyoko and Ren are alone talking with each other. The events in the last few volumes have made those somewhat more fraught, though these two aren't a typical shoujo romance couple, to say the least. That's one of my favorite things about this manga, actually.
(Kyoko thinking)"We're not having the usual relationship a man and a woman have, where we try to deepen the bonds between us!!"
As always, Kyoko's facial expressions, particularly in chapters 301 and 302, are a lot of fun. The grudge spirits are Close call! and worthy of a chuckle or two.

I'm not sure why, since I've read a decent amount of manga at this point, but it wasn't until the last couple of chapters of this book that I thought the Japanese default etiquette of serving tea when having guests is nice. Maybe it's because it added an additional note of mild intimacy to Kyoko and Ren's interactions.

As seems to be the case a lot of the time recently, we don't have a publishing date for the next English volume of this series. I'll keep an eye out for it.

Speriamo bene 🤷‍♀️

More reviews (and no fluff) on the blog http://surrealtalvi.wordpress.com/

The series does drag on - it seems to have lost a bit of its luster and I can't help but wish it was much shorter and had a better resolution. With this volume, Kyoko gets recognition for her acting, Moko wins a part, and Ren and Yashiro conspire a way to get Moko to spend more time with Ren. Ren makes Kyoko an interesting offer in the form of a challenge. And a mysterious American producer may have plans for using Kyoko in a future film (cue new arc).

As with previous volumes, the scenes with e.g., Mogami or on the set are far less interesting than with Ren. Most of the plot of the last volumes have been around Kyoko pulling away from Ren even though he made a declaration to her. It feels disingenuous and I don't feel that Nakamura has written herself out of that trap. It doesn't feel natural or realistic that both Kyoko and Ren are circling each other.

The series could really use a denouement at this point (it's been 20 years now!). But it doesn't look like any end is in sight. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Vorfreude pur!!!

Skip Beat has been a favorite of mine for over 14 years. As each new volume comes out, I continue you be riveted by Kyoko’s story and am glad she has gotten to a point she is healing and growing as a character.

This volume built up more of the story setting up what I imagine will be the next big step in Kyoko’s professional ambition. There were a few parts that felt repeated in dialogue and one part that didn’t seem to make as much sense. Maybe there was a rush to get out the volume or the translation wasn’t as on par as normal. Despite that, this was still a solid addition to the series and I’m excited to see what happens next!

This is one of those stories where I've been invested in it for so many years, I reeeeally want it to end. I need closure. I need to not have to pick back up in this story for the 20th time and refresh what has happened (and wait, did I miss a volume? Maybe, need to check that out again too just in case... <- me at least a dozen times). Yes. I want this slow burn to finally light. 50 volumes is too many! But also, there's some definite (FINALLY) movement. At some point I hope this comes out in large compendiums like Rurouni Kenshin so I can just enjoy the story (and an ending!!) without huge time gaps between sittings. (Sorry this became more of a rant)

Repeated review.

I am so uninterested in this series, but I want to see it through (at least to the last translated volume; not sure I’ll pick it up again when more comes out). I won’t be making proper reviews for it anymore since my thoughts are just generally the same all the time anyway (lots of annoyance/anger); my rating will tell you if I liked or disliked it. You can safely assume, however, that I still despise Sho and Ren, and everyone else, but Kyo and her bestie (who sometimes isn’t around and sometimes is, much like Sho).

Will this series ever end? At this point it’s unlikely.
Is this still somehow my favourite shōjo? Absolutely.

I adore this series tbh! the humour hits well, the overall plot is interesting and the main two characters have amazing development as well as depth (esp the female!!! Yes!!!) which makes them v compelling. The side characters are also interesting too! I especially love Yashiro and Moko <3

Every time I'm like "Do I really want to continue this series? It's been 48 volumes with plenty of character development, but little relationship development..." And then I finish another volume and get the happy feels because it's so silly and cheesy, but I love it anyways. So here I am, ready and eager to keep reading.

I just wish they would KISS ALREADY, GOSH DARN IT

Great series!

Each volume is better than the last! I greatly look forward to the happy ending, though after this many years it will feel like saying goodbye to dear friends lol. I wonder if we'll make it to 60 volumes?

Can we please just get Kyoko filming Lotus in the Mud? Thats all I need. Cosplay Tuxedo Producer setting his sights on Kyoko is exciting. Director "Yuki" getting teased is hilarious. And a date at Ren's house? That Charm Attack!
