About the author

Fernando Sorrentino is an Argentine writer born in Buenos Aires on November 8, 1942. His works have been translated into English, Portuguese, Italian, German, French, Finnish, Hungarian, Polish, Bulgarian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Tamil, and Kabyle. In 2006 Fernando Sorrentino published a collection of short stories entitled: "Per colpa del dottor Moreau ed altri racconti fantastici". The collection includes all his short stories translated in Italian and is published by Progetto Babele literary magazine.

Consider absurdist fiction, that writing where reason is turned on its head and the wacky, bizarre, odd, and crazy are all par for the course, where the stories are sometimes very short, even as short as a page or two, and traditional plot structure is frequently abandoned or given surreal twists that test a reader’s comfort zone. We can contrast absurdist fiction with the dark, weird, horror fiction by such authors as Edgar Allen Poe, Daphne du Maurier, H.P. Lovecraft and Stephen King.

Case in point, think of The Birds, that terrifying story by Daphne du Maurier where, seemingly directed by an invisible diabolical force, all the billions of birds across the globe, all species and all sizes, turn against the human race. Although Alfred Hitchcock’s film version of the story didn’t address worldwide disaster, it most certainly did retain the tale’’s horror and fear.

Keep in mind the dark aesthetic of The Birds when you take a moment to read (complete story below) Fernando Sorrentino’s short-short tale of another global takeover by birds, this time parakeets. Or, on further reflection, are those tiny green critters really more akin to grasshoppers? I think it is safe to say Fernando’s story inspires laughter rather than fear. I myself laughed out loud several times while reading. By my reckoning, this is the key difference between the absurd weird and the horror story weird - the tale of absurdity inspires laughter; the tale of terror inspires fear.

Yet in absurd fiction, the surreal images are powerful and memorable. In this Fernando tale, parakeets remain in our hair, our ears, pressing against our eyes, nose and mouth. Added to this, as if pepper sprinkled in a bowl of soup, all the absurdity and craziness is seasoned with an unusual philosophic twist, since as Fernando boldly states “Parakeets rule only over minds.” I certainly can appreciate how many readers are avid fans of horror, sometimes reading horror novels and nothing but horror novels. Think of all those many men and women, thousands upon thousands, reading their Stephen King or Anne Rice. For myself, I try to read within the entire range of fiction, but I must say, my very favorite writing is absurdist writing, like the stories penned by Fernando Sorrentino.

THE EMPIRE OF THE PARAKEETS
The nickname 'parakeets' is often given to those quite harmless, short-lived, tiny green orthoptera that, on summer nights, keep flying round and round lights. Their movements do not appear to be governed by intelligent thought. Lacking the fly's sharp sight and rapid reactions, the nuisance is easily eliminated by crushing them between the thumb and index finger. In contrast to the mosquito, they are incapable of biting. Nevertheless, they are sheer torment for anyone trying to read or eat. They throw themselves blindly against your face or eyes; they drown in your soup; they smudge your writing. By the time you manage to brush aside the five or six parakeets walking on your fork, another ten or twelve are already in your ears or up your nose.

Why should these tiny green orthoptera, the parakeets, be so stupid, so feeble-minded? Their behaviour is perhaps the least sensible of any living thing - those who believe that this behaviour is common to all insects are wrong. For instance, a man can establish, with a cockroach, a kind of relationship, if not friendly then logical at least: the man will attempt to kill the cockroach, which will try to run away and hide. This is simply not possible with the parakeets: no one knows what they are doing or why they are doing it.

"But," asks Dr. Ludwig Boitus himself in one of his latest papers, "is the parakeets' behaviour really so mad? Let us start from the premise that all living beings orientate their actions towards the preservation of their species. Why should the parakeets' behaviour be an exception to such sound, well-proven law? [...] The modern researcher," he adds, "must not limit himself to simple statements to the effect that the parakeets' actions are gratuitous and senseless; he should make an effort to determine the true logic behind the apparently absurd, illogical behaviour of the parakeets. This behaviour is merely an outward expression of an inner motivation and it is time we found out what that might be."*

Dr. Boitus mentions two facts that have generally been ignored: firstly, in recent times it has been observed that the parakeets fly less around lights than around people's heads and secondly, their numbers are increasing. He points out that although the parakeets seem to lack even a minimal offensive or defensive weapon, five hundred or a thousand of them, by continuously harassing a man -- entering his ears and eyes, walking on his neck, stopping him from thinking, reading, writing or sleeping -- can force him -- in fact, do force him -- into a state of complete mental derangement. In this state, it is the man not the parakeet who does not know what he is doing or why he is doing it. It is a state in which the man does not even know who he is and when he enters it, when he loses consciousness of his own self, he inevitably becomes resigned to being surrounded and dominated by the parakeets. Furthermore, from that moment on he can no longer live without the parakeets, without feeling them inside his ears, his eyes, his mouth. What has occurred is a phenomenon that "in the field of drug addiction is known as dependency. And this," Boitus adds, "is the true purpose of the parakeets, the underlying logic behind their apparently absurd and illogical behavior."

The parakeets are inexorably expanding their empire. To date, they have taken over every civilized country -- the more advanced a nation's technology, the stronger their hold. Wherever there is electric light, the parakeets reign supreme.

On this point, a world atlas accompanying the article shows how few countries are still free of the Empire of the Parakeets. However, we believe that the inclusion of this map is a fallacy: this is not a political empire. Parakeets rule only over minds. When these have been 'parakeetised' -- to use the neologism coined by Boitus -- they go on to parakeetise the bodies, which consequently begin to perform essentially parakeetic actions. As Dr. Boitus concludes: "At this point, only primitive communities and the poorest countries remain almost free of parakeets, countries untouched by the development of mass media."

Not quite what I was expecting, to me Parakeets are birds, not tiny green flying insects. I'm guessing the story is about green flies as they are the only insect that fit the decription.

This is one for the paranoid conspiracy theorists, could the parakeets agenda really be this complex? I think Fernando got this one wrong, I think the parakeets are secretly recording their work to air on some reality TV show called "When humans go wild!"

An interesting little read but the dependency on the parakeets did remind me of There's a Man in the Habit of Hitting me on the Head with an Umbrella so doesn't feel quite as original as his other stories.

"الكتاب مترجم من الارجنتينية وهو عبارة عن مجموعة قصصية، 14 قصة غير عادية اذ انها تخلط بين الكوميديا والرعب. اعجبتني بعض القصص منها قصة المزعج الذي اراد ان يحتفل بيوم ميلاده بطريقة غريبة اذ انه قرر ان يستوقف رجل غريب في الشارع ليتحدث معه ويطلب منه المساعدة في الوصول لوجهته. وفي قصة ملوك الحفلة يتحدث الكاتب عن اناس يبدون بصورة جميلة ويظهرون للناس بأنهم مميزون وأغنياء وأنيقون ولكن ما ان تزورهم في المنزل حتى يظهروا على صورتهم الحقيقية، يلقي الكاتب الضوء على فئة من الناس تحب أن تبرز وتظهر للناس بأنها من الطبقة المخملية ولكنها في الأصل لا تملك شيئًا.
أعجبتني مجموعة القصصية السابقة (الطريقة الوحيدة لمكافحة العقارب) اكثر من هذه."

ثاني مجموعة قصصية أقرأها للكاتب الارجنتيني المجنون فرناندو سورينتينو، وهي اقل جنوناً من المجموعة الاولى (الطريقة الوحيدة لمكافحة العقارب) وأكثر متعة في رأيي
أسلوب المؤلف الذي يخلط الواقع والمعلومات الجادة بالفانتازيا والسخرية، ممتع ويجعل القراءة رحلة ممتعة

بدأت أشك في أن "فيرناندو" يتعمد الكتابه بشكل تقريري أو مقالي بدلاً من إتباع الطريقه التقليديه لكتابه القصه مما أصابني كـ قارئ بالملل

تفاوتت القصص في طولها وفي مستواها، قصة "قصاص الخراف" مذهلة! الترجمة موفقة. الاسترسال في التفاصيل في بعض النصوص لم يرق لي كقارئة. العنوان لم يخدم المجموعة المكتوبة بأسلوب ساخر

القصص في هذه المجموعة القصصية أنضج ، مسبوكة بجودة أعلى من مجموعته السابقة حتى الترجمة خلت من الأخطاء المزعجة التي هناك
سورينتينو يكتب مجموعة قصصية عن أشخاص متأزمين ، متعرضين للأشكلة ، يفردون المشكلة دون حاجة لاستبانة الحل أو لاستجداء طرق تسوية سلمية ، يكتب لنفسه لا للقارئ و هذه أنانية لا أنساق معها لأن الكاتب يجب أن يضع في كل حرف من حروفه قارئاً ما و هذا ما يمجّه و يقف ضدّه
علاوةً على ذلك : لا أنفك عن الإعتقاد أن هذه القصص هي قصصه التي حدثت له لا التي حدثت في ذهنه و أنه يسرد تجاربه الشخصية تحت أسماء مستعارة و مناطق مقتبسة و هذا الاعتقاد لن تكافحه العقارب !
