Married couple Blair (a landscape architect) and Matt Dawson (who just finished military active duty in Afghanistan) are spending three months traveling around the states in a travel trailer. Matt needs some peace and time to heal, he has PTSD. Bad weather forces them to get off the road, so they stop at a nearby campground, Bird Creek. They meet some other campers staying at the site. Then someone finds a dead body. Who is the killer? Is it one of them, or someone nearby, watching them?
I really enjoyed this book. I love stories when a group of people are stuck in one place and a murderer is in their midst. It’s fun trying to figure out who the culprit is. I really liked the campground setting. Especially when it rained, and there was a mudslide that washed out the road, and they were all stuck there, at Bird Creek, and couldn’t leave. With a murderer, killing them, one by one. There was also an interesting cast of characters. (Blair was a pretty smart and resourceful lady.) This is my first read by N. L. Hinkens, and I look forward to reading more books by this author.
A fast-moving thriller that has you by the throat from the very start, squeezing intently until the explosive ending that You Never Saw Coming...We all keep hidden secrets, don't we? Everyone lies at some point, a little untruth..or perhaps a big secret tucked away from everyone's sight!! This story has characters that are forced together due to some very bad weather, some seem sweet, others a little strange..but should be together a short time, until the storm passes..Only the respite takes a murderous turn, as the storm continues longer than expected...Will there be any campers left to appear from ravaged site? A psychological thriller that never leaves you, by an author whose writing is a must read! The suspense, actions and thoughts from intriguing characters enhance an amazing plot and you can Not stop reading! Although I believe my camping plans have been sightly changed as I look ahead...
This was a fantastic read. It was a roller coaster from beginning to end. So many possibilities as to who the murderer could be. Loved the characters and the story. Will be reading more by this author.
Some of us are hiding secrets. All of us are lying. This is a brilliant read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believeable. Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuousluy. Can't wait to read what the author brings out next. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
Another fantastic gem from Hinkens! When a mudslide traps a group of strangers together in a remote campground, anything can happen... including murder.
Hinkens does a great job of forming dynamic characters, an intriguing plot, and a breakneck pace. You surely won't want to miss out on this one... But maybe don't go camping for a few days after.
ARC copy from the author. All opinions are my own.
Loved this book. I may never camp again. I was on the edge of my seat during all the twists and turns that made this book a page turner till the end. I didn't figure out the who and the why till the reveal. Really good book.
I’ve read several by this author, and I like her easy style. This book is about campers that are stranded in a campground by a mudslide. It doesn’t take long for a body to be discovered, and then more murders, missing persons abound. There are several campers looking suspicious, and the story moves along nicely. I liked this easy story with a satisfying ending.
I enjoyed it. A psychological thriller that will keep you guessing until the end. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys thrillers with lots of suspense. I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest review.
A good surprise this turned out to be. Sometimes the writing was odd, which threw me off; this didn't happen that often and didn't keep me from enjoying the book.
Anyway, I really had a lot of fun reading this book. It kept me guessing and I had changed my mind numerous times on who the killer could be.
I was pulled in from the start and kept on the edge of my seat. There's so many secrets and every one is lying. Every character was suspicious and had me side eyeing them. The characters and setting feel so real.
You Will Never Leave is an exciting thriller that kept me glued to the pages.
What an exceptionally taut, twisty, scary mystery! Actually, a Suspense thriller, a psychological thriller, a treatise of human Evil, deceit, selfishness. Also PTSD issues examined, domestic violence, abuse, Trust, betrayal: a veritable cornucopia of human failings. I remained on the metaphorical "edge of the seat" from almost the beginning, as the surprises and shocks were frequent! I loved the twistiness of the plot in this veritably "locked room" Mystery, where the environment in which the characters found themselves [almost as if herded there] confined them, inescapably, and Nature seemed to conspire with human Evil to trap them too. A one-sitting, breathless, read. I am so gratified when a novel affects me so strongly.
I thought the characters often had odd reactions that were not believable. They did things that people wouldn't normally do. The story was intriguing enough for me to read the whole book but I was hoping for bigger twists. This is the first book I've read from this author and it is probably the last.
Good story, but seemed to be written by a teenager. Had to keep going back and try and put storyline together. Ex: she had a rag stuffed in her mouth on one page but was licking her lips on the next page, and then rag in her mouth on the next page. Wtf.
Very tedious read, I don’t recommend this book at all. The only reason I finished it was because I kept up hope that something interesting would happen. It didn’t.
I have read several novels from this author and I feel that this is the strongest one to date.
Set at an isolated campground besieged and cut off by bad weather, the story follows Blair, who is traveling with her husband, Matt - a veteran dealing with PTSD. A limited number of other campers are also present, demonstrating various amounts of suspicious behaviour. A body is discovered in the woods, someone disappears, and things spiral into paranoia and suspicion with nowhere to turn but to one another.
I found the character development in this novel was the strongest I've seen from this author. Blair seems to be a generally reasonable person, and as the main character, the story focuses primarily on her. I would have liked to see more nuance in her - a dark or less flattering side would have added another layer of dimension to her. Hazel is also a very interesting character who I felt received the short stick in terms of treatment. Some of the (often) male characters didn't feel as well developed, and, in many cases, were almost interchangeable. I think that giving the characters stronger, more unique voices, as well as some to improve the dialogue would really make some of the minor characters pop.
The pacing of the story is excellent. There is enough description that it was easy to visualise what was happening, but not so much that the action was bogged down. A shift in the way the paranoia evolved towards more character development would have, for me, swung the pendulum more towards psychological suspense - I really like the subtle ratcheting up of tension so from a personal standpoint, I would have enjoyed that style of pacing even more. That does not take away from the bang-up job of pacing on display.
Another element, which is very much in the personal preference category, that I would have preferred to see approached differently is the world-building. This novel has a sort of Rural Anywhere, USA vibe, which is very likely what the author intended. I do not live in the US and its for this reason, I believe, I have a very strong preference for novels where the setting is almost a character unto itself in its uniqueness. Again, totally a personal preference - I'm sure there are those who prefer the more generic approach.
I found this to be a fairly quick read, and it is definitely my favourite from this author to date! I look forward to reading more in the future.
"You Will Never Leave" by N.L. Hinkens is a thrilling ride that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The story follows Matt and Blair, who are hoping a road trip will help Matt cope with his PTSD after coming back from Afghanistan. Their plan for a peaceful escape takes a terrifying turn when heavy rain forces them and a few other travelers to take shelter at a remote campground.
Hinkens does a great job setting up the creepy, isolated campground. The constant rain and a mudslide trap everyone there, making the place feel even more claustrophobic. This spooky setting is perfect for the scary events that follow. The group finds a body and realizes there's a killer among them.
The book shines with its suspense and the way it keeps you guessing. Every chapter adds more tension, and Hinkens skillfully makes you suspect everyone. Each character has their secrets and possible motives, so trust is a rare commodity, and paranoia is rampant.
Blair and Matt are well-developed characters. Blair's strength and determination stand out as things get more dangerous, and Matt's PTSD struggle adds an emotional depth to the story. Their relationship is tested in extreme ways, making them feel real and relatable. The supporting characters, each with their own hidden pasts and questionable intentions, add to the mystery, keeping you on your toes.
One of the best things about "You Will Never Leave" is how it constantly surprises you. Just when you think you've figured out who the killer is, Hinkens throws in a twist that changes everything. This unpredictability makes the book a real page-turner.
The pacing is fast, ensuring the tension never drops. Hinkens' writing is vivid and gripping, perfectly capturing the fear and urgency the characters feel. The ending ties everything together in a satisfying way, with a final twist that feels well-earned.
In short, "You Will Never Leave" is an outstanding thriller with a spooky setting, intriguing characters, and non-stop suspense. N.L. Hinkens has crafted a story that will keep you hooked from start to finish. If you love a mystery that keeps you guessing, this book is a must-read. Five stars for a thrilling, well-executed tale of survival and intrigue.
Thank you to the author for giving me the opportunity to read and review an ARC of You Will Never Leave.
The author does a wonderful job in keeping the reader engaged and guessing throughout the entirety of the book. It is easy to deduce that the characters’ camping trip would go negatively, but to determine the murderer was fun to do. At one point, I suspected almost everyone to be the murderer for different reasons. The theme of trustworthiness and honesty lends very nicely to this part of the plot. I did feel the resolution after, knowing the murderer to be a bit rushed, however, I appreciate the ending was not dragged out longer than necessary.
Though there were a number of characters in this book, it was easy to keep track of them and their situations. From Matt’s distrust of everyone to Whitney’s naivety to Blair’s kindness and resourcefulness, the cast of characters had their likable and unlikable moments.
Due to the nature of the camping situation, readers can’t truly appreciate Matt’s PTSD and the complications it has weighed on his marriage to Blair. We see glimpses of it, but since Matt goes into survival mode, we don’t see the theme of PTSD very much. The theme that was glaringly obvious and was really well done was the idea how well do you actually know someone? When there is a killer on the loose, then reserving trust is probably the best.
Overall, I enjoyed every aspect of this book and look forward to reading more by N.L. Hinkens! I would recommend this read to those who enjoy thrillers that keep you guessing on who the murderer is!
You Will Never Leave is N. L. Hinkens best psychological suspense thriller yet! The story was so enthralling I couldn't stop turning the pages.
Matt and Blair take off on a camping trip around the States hoping to help him recover from the PTSD brought on by a rough tour in Afghanistan. At one point on their trip they run into torrential rains that encourage them to take a detour from their planned route and stop at a nearer camping park. It is a small park with only a few camping spots for trailers. Those spots rapidly fill up due to the rain. Most of the campers seem friendly enough although due to Matt's mental condition he suspects everyone of something. They plan to leave the following morning.
Then one of the campers finds a body. Is the murderer one of their group of campers or is there someone else around? The rains cause a mudslide that prevents them from being able to leave. From that point their stay just goes downhill and it starts looking like they will never leave.
N. L. Hinkens put together a great cast of characters who each seems reluctant to tell certain aspects about themselves making everyone of them a possible suspect and yet you don't really want to believe that any of them could be the murderer. Everyone of her books just keep getting better and better placing her higher on my must read list.
A gripping tale of revenge and murder. Five applauding stars!
If you enjoy a suspenseful, well-crafted mystery that will keep you guessing until the very end, grab this book! Unlike some rather predictable whodunits, this story covered its tracks with mysterious characters and clever plot twists that left me completely clueless until the very end.
Here's a tiny bit of the plot. (No spoilers--I promise.) Blair and her husband Matt (who's been diagnosed with PTSD) decide a relaxing camping trip will help him heal. Relaxation is not in the cards, however, when a mudslide traps them in a remote campground with an odd assortment of secretive fellow campers, none of whom are exactly what they appear to be.
The rain never stops as mysterious deaths and disappearances soon have the remaining campers suspecting each other of being a killer. Each has the motive and/or skill to be a murderer, but who can it be? Can anyone be trusted? Can the killer be stopped before it's too late?
As bodies decompose and fear spreads throughout the camp, our heroine "just wanted out of this mess before they all ended up dead. It was like a live game of Clue with a cast of untrustworthy characters replete with baggage, weapons and motives, moving among trailers instead of rooms." Exactly.
Professional editing and proofreading add to the enjoyment of this gripping tale. Highly recommended.
This book is the book that could have been....! It was good but it could have been great and I can’t put my finger on what fell short for me. I will have to read another book by this author and see how I feel after that before passing too much judgement. The rainy, cold and isolated setting was certainly a plus in terms of atmosphere.
Best laid plans often have a way of unravelling which is what happens in spectacular form in this campground mystery. Blair and her husband Matt are on a trip in their fathers camper trailer. An attempt to bring some much needed peace and tranquility back into their lives following Matt’s return from Afghanistan. A quick decision to pull in to Bird Creek in bad weather puts them in immediate danger. When a body is found, stabbed and strangled in the undergrowth they are faced with having to pull together with the other campers to stay alive and figure out who the killer is. As the body count increases and bad weather sees them cut off from the outside world, will they put together the clues in time to save themselves.....!?
Nothing gripping here but a fun little read all the same.
This is a real page turner , the author has turned an ordinary camping week into a nightmare which kept me riveted and enjoying each new twist and turn of this pulsating novel . The characters are diverse , the author skillfully weaving their different personalities together to create a psychological thriller which had me guessing right to the end of the book. With a mix of solid hunting characters , young honeymooners, a military man recently returned from Afghanistan together with others just wanting a quiet break , finding themselves unable to leave the camp site because of a landslide, causes tension and sparks to fly especially when the number of dead keep rising. An excellent read I thoroughly recommend this book by N L Hinkens which will be of interest to a wide age group . Thanks to the author for the kindle copy which I received as an ARC in return for a review.
A couple, Matt and Blair, embark on a restorative camping trip to help Matt recover from his demons from being at war. Little did they know they would have another war of their own, one of survival. They meet a mix of people with a variety of circumstances at the campground they stop in to wait out the storm. A body of a man is discovered and the questions start flying. Who is he? Who are the other's in the campground? Can anyone be trusted? As the body count climbs, a mudslide occurs which traps the escape routes from the camp. Will anyone survive and find their way out? A good novel with well thought out characters who you love to hate and enough suspense to keep you interested The only drawback of the story was I didn't feel like everything was completely "sewed up" in the telling of what happened to everyone. Otherwise, I recommend this novel as well as, her others.

Love it. Can not say how much I enjoy the locked in and camping tropes.
This whole thing of people dying and coming up missing and the main characters not knowing who they can trust are really creepy too. Is it one of the campers they are stranded with (one of their own) or someone in the woods outside the camp picking them off one by one? It’s just really kept me interested from the beginning. The funny thing is, I keep purposely stopping the book even when I want to keep reading because I don’t want the story to end lol 😝.
I have come to enjoy N.L. Hinkens as much as I do Freida McFadden and Lucinda Berry and some other great psychological thriller writers. Plus, I really like the way she does stand alones in groups. She’s awesome.
"They had inadvertently ended up at a campground full of damaged people." I'm so in love with this book. A whodunit in a camping setting. Something I never knew was missing yet needed in my literary life. Instant five stars. Each and every character huddled up in the small campground to get out of the heavy storm is utterly intriguing showing the author's far-reaching talent. I tried to pace myself reading--this is the kind of book you want to read all at once but also don't want to be over. If course, it didn't work and I gobbled it up, how could I not? One mystery after another, one twist after another, edge-of-my-seat suspense, and a cast of characters I loved, hated, and suspected. YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK!
What happens when you get stranded in a campground of the beaten path with one or more killers? Reading or listening to You Will Never Leave can give you a glimpse into that very situation. The action and intrigue in this story really held my interest to the point I had no desire to hit pause on the audiobook version. The cast of characters were a group of interesting types each with their own secrets and human failings. Along the way to figure out who the killer is a host of secret are revealed setting even more intrigue in motion. Once again Norma Hinkens has crafted a story that traps the reader in with her characters and the only escape is to follow through with the adventure. Mandy Fox did an excellent job on narrating this story.
This is a solid 4.5 star Matt and Blair's holiday to help Matt shake off some of the stresses after returning from war and prior to starting their new business is not turning out as expected and is about to get worse. I loved the diverse range of people in the camp ground as you just like Matt felt they could be the killer but you also kept jumping between it being someone in the camp or someone outside of it. There are plenty of twists, red herrings, surprises and lies revealed with some that leave you speechless, this along with characters you love or love to hate and a storyline that has you glued to the pages makes this an addicted and fantastic read!!
