This was fun, but not (I repeat NOT) a good jumping-off point for anyone new to the Guardians.
Or really, anyone who hasn't really been keeping up with what's been happening lately.
Psst! What's been happening lately?

description

Gamora has hightailed it for some reason. Rocket is MIA due to some shhh! don't talk about what happened! secret, and Groot can fucking talk now.

description

I liked seeing the reappearance of some of the older GotG members like Moondragon and Nova. Was Nova a member or did he just hang out with them all the time? I can't remember.
At any rate, I like seeing the new/old faces.
This is one I'd like to keep reading, but I think I'll just Google what's happened in the previous comics because I'm pretty sure I tried once before and just lost interest somewhere along the way.
I like Cates, so if anyone has an opinion on whether or not this is one to stick with, I'd appreciate it.

After Infinity Wars, the Guardians have been shattered and Thanos is dead. A new Dark Guardians are rising after Thanos's will was read announcing that Thanos would be reborn in someone else's body. Those Dark Guardians think it's Gamora. Plus, those pesky Black Order clowns are still around even if Thanos isn't. It's time for Star-Lord and Groot to get a new band together to stop them.

Donny Cates is killing it in the Marvel universe. At this point he's got his whole little Donny-verse he's carving out for himself. I like how there are some allusions to Knull here with Wraith that will probably play out later in Venom.

After the miserable Infinity Wars event, this was a much needed comeback for the Guardians.

Gamore is on the run. Thanos is dead. The guardians are broken up and all that is left is Quill and Groot. The Black Order return to take their father/master body back but not without the Guardians trying to stop them! Actually, almost the entire book is the Guardians all fucked up and no one working together, people who were friends hunting each other, all while Thanos true plan goes into effect.

I really dug a lot of the interactions. Beta Ray being a friend of both Quill and Groot makes some great moments. Cosmic Ghost rider is there for the laughs. The fights are huge and epic. This feels like classic guardians vibe with a lot of great moments and quick plotting. Sure, some characters are there to set up other stories, but overall pretty fun.

I hope guardians continues down this fun path and never back to that terrible Infinity event style storytelling. A 4 out of 5.

“Ah, but you had it easier, big brother [Thanos] didn’t you? Born into this world to kill it. As destinies go, yours was rather direct.”

Thanos is dead. But will that be enough to keep the galaxy safe and in peace? Will death truly be enough to stop the Mad Titan?

That's the idea in which this volume is centered and it works as well as you'll expect a comic-logic based plot to work. Which is to say, very well. After all, he was a powerful, intelligent, and vicious being.

With a lot of pieces on the board, all our heroes must scramble to try and stop an event that will decimate a galaxy already decimated and recovering. That is if they can pull themselves together long enough to do it.

“I did become him [Thanos]. I got over it. Don’t punish me because you never did.”

I'm still quite shocked at the fact that I'm liking this superhero comic so much. I like comics, but I must admit that sometimes their logic is a bit hard to swallow for me. While Guardians of the Galaxy doesn't have a particularly more scientifical logic they do know how to make it work for them and make it work.

They're family-bond and interactions are a particular highlight of mine... something I missed a bit here since the... core members of the team are scattered through the Galaxy for various motives.

How well it treats the emotional effects of, well, everything a superhero does is something that blew me away from the very beginning and just keeps taking me by surprise and making me extremely happy. It's so realistic and honest and, therefore, not always pretty.

I love it!

The one thing I still don't particularly like is how I still feel like I don't quite know how all the pieces fit since, clearly, I have neither read all the previous volumes for this particular comic or any of the other Marvel ones... and though the references are small enough it still throws me in a loop from time to time.

“I don’t know what’s coming. And I don’t know if we can beat it. But what I wanted to say… is that… now. More than ever, I’m damn proud to call you all Guardians!”

_____________________

Who would have thought that it would be Guardians of the Galaxy the superhero comics I would fall in love with? Because I certainly couldn't have said.

There's something about them that I just really like and the ideas are, so far, pretty cool and entertaining.

I'm quickly becoming obsessed with these comics and I don't feel a little bit guilty. I am, however, quite surprised.

Don't know quite how I feel about this new run yet. The writing was off (a distracting number of @#$%& bleeped words and a lot of characters talk like hippies for some reason, calling everyone "man" at every opportunity).

The new team isn't that exciting, either, but that might just be me missing the now famous line-up so I can't judge it too harshly there. Change is inevitable, after all (also, some of the new members have been guardians before once upon a time, so there is that at least).

To add another complaint in this whiny sundae, the plot wasn't very complex (if a character in your story comments about how painfully obvious the mystery was, maybe you should write a new mystery rather than making fun of your weak one) and many of the characters didn't have really strong reasons for being involved and were obviously there as simply cannon fodder (and a few didn't even have any lines or obvious purpose for being in the book at all).

On a more positive note, this book still has that special charm that Guardians books usually have, with a nice mix of action, comedy, and tender moments.

Also, I think they were trying to inject some Abnett/Lanning vibes here, and I appreciate the effort.

FInally, I was left wanting more (damn your intriguing cliffhanger!) so I am definitely in for the next volume.

This book picks up with the aftermath of Infinity wars and we have a new team forming when a meeting is held aboard thanos ship that after his death he has uploaded his consciousness into someone else's body and then the knowhere celestial head comes crashing in and that leads to the formation of the new guardians team and from there we go to all of them on the look for Gamora, formation of dark guardians, Hela's attempt to get Thanos body from Collector, Annihilus and then the ultimate clash and betrayals and war and then finding who the person is and then an ultimate team up to stop this resurrection of Thanos and whatever Hela's plans are! This was a great volume and had so much stuff and cool moments, and callback to different events and the clash was earned and redeems Gamora and Peter has such a great role in this and the roster was fun too! The art is freaking gorgeous and flows really smoothly!

With Thanos dead at the hands of Gamora during Infinity Wars, the universe's most powerful heroes and villains assemble to hear the reading of his will. But when the Black Order and Thanos's lover Hela attack, only a hodgepodge of heroes remain to guard the galaxy - and if his will is to be believed, Thanos is returning!

After his fantastic Thanos run, Donny Cates was a no-brainer to take the reins of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and this first story arc proves that that faith is well-founded. He shuffles the board of cosmic characters with ease, and although he writes a lot of them out a few issues in, there's definitely a feeling that he's got bigger plans for them - and given the other stuff that Cates has written recently, there's no reason not to believe that at all.

The mystery of who will be the new Thanos is compelling, even if it's a bit of an obvious answer, while the fallout from the last few Guardians stories is felt throughout everything that happens - Star-Lord's current state of mind is especially noteworthy, as is Rocket's absence. I'm glad we're sticking with talking Groot again as well, and any comic with Cosmic Ghost Rider deserves reading.

Oh, and Geoff Shaw, the other dude that tore up that Thanos run alongside Cates? He's here too, pencilling all six of these issues with the same sadistic flair, while David Marquez's covers are drop-dead gorgeous.

Guardians Of The Galaxy deserves another seminal run like that famous DnA series. Brian Bendis tried, and Gerry Duggan came very close, but given this first volume, I think Cates is going to be the one that proves he should be mentioned in the same breath as them.

Cates knows how to write stories and characters in the way I enjoy. I wasn't a fan of Marvel teams and events and blah blah here blah there and anything that was going on, I usually rather took to read something published by Image or DC.. Since I started to read Cates' stuff, I quite enjoy to read Marvel things (not just written by him, though he sas pretty much the starter button). This was not as good as f.e. Cosmic Ghost Rider, but still interesting and funny. Nice introduction of the new team of Guardians of the Galaxy.

Wow! Was this ever good. Cates takes some of the pieces he's been working on with Thanos and Cosmic Ghost Rider and throws them together with a bunch of other stuff and, suddenly, the Guardians are cool again. They've actually got some teeth, after being totally de-fanged by Brian Michael Bendis. This was one of the best series I've read in like, forever. Great artwork from Geoff Shaw, too! I want more now!

The Final Gauntlet (#1-6). The resurrection of Thanos is a fine plot for the first arc of the new Guardians. We also get a lot of fun action with a lot of interesting cosmic heroes, including a couple of shocking twists. The only downside is that it doesn't really feel like the Guardians. Still, it's good Cosmic Marvel fun [4/5].

Kicking off a new era (post Infinity Wars), this iteration of the Guardians looks different from the typical MCU lineup we are inundated with all the time. Depressed Quill, missing Rocket, and talking Groot are just the beginning...
While investigating an energy reading near Thanos' old ship Sanctuary (Thanos is dead, killed in Infinity Wars by Gamora), Quill (in new ship the Ryder, after Winona Ryder LOL) and Groot find a mysterious black hole... mysterious because things are coming OUT of it. Beta Ray Bill (Stormbreaker in hand), Moondragon, Phyla-Vell, and Cosmic Ghost Rider come aboard the Ryder and Quill declares them his new crew after the Nova Corps try to take them. The meeting was discussing the possibility of resurrection for Thanos, so the natural focus was directed at Gamora. Only Groot knows where she is, so he takes over leadership of the Guardians and takes them to Halfworld, where she is. After first fighting her, they convince her to come with them to protect her from a new team: Dark Guardians. (Cosmic GH, having left when Quill refused to go after Gamora, Gladiator, Nebula, Starfox and Wraith)
Nova joins with Quill and company right before the Dark Guardians attack. Gladiator takes down the Ryder, and appears to kill Quill, but he survives from his armor. Gamora gets captured. Taking her back to Eros (Thanos' brother who had originally called the meeting at the beginning), the Dark Guardians realize they've been duped when Hela shows up as the new lover of Eros. BUT.... she is only there because (surprise surprise, like we couldn't have called it) because Eros holds the key to Thanos resurrection. Dark Guardians merge with Guardians, Cosmic GH ends up in hell and meets Johnny Blaze, Thanos is reborn, but might have died again (doubtful) and the new team decides to go looking for Rocket.

A really great start to what could be an amazing new direction for the Guardians. I've heard echoes of a new Annihilation event....?
Recommend. A strong beginning, featuring some great characters.

Oh man, so awesome.

This run is, in many ways, an ode to the Dan Abnett/Andy Lanning Annihilation era of cosmic Marvel... but it still manages to feel new, fresh and well placed as a newer Guardians book.

Like most Cates stuff, it’s clearly building to the big Knull showdown, and there are plenty of little references to that. He loves referencing his own stuff. Various Cates stuff is mentioned, including Thanos Wins, Death of the Inhumans and Venom. I like it. Makes things fun. I look forward to the second tpb.

A few of Marvel’s ongoing books are hard to divorce from their equivalents in the MCU, and none more so than Guardians of the Galaxy.

Writer-du-jour Donny Cates’s take on Guardians of the Galaxy is the most MCU-like of his many MCU-like books. Whether you see this as a good thing or a bad thing will likely have to do with how much you like the MCU. For me, I find the films enjoyable (a few more than others), but my biggest problem with the movies is that the tone and style is too consistent across multiple different properties. The same can be said for the current crop of high profile books at Marvel, and Cates (much like Bendis before him) is a master of consistency.

This is all to say that his Guardians book could just as easily be Dr. Strange or The Avengers or Captain Marvel or Thor or whatever. It’s all perfectly fine and perfectly consistent work, but there’s nothing unique in his take on the Guardians. Similarly, Geoff Shaw’s art is a master-class in legible action set-pieces. But as with Cates’s work, Shaw’s art is also too consistent and doesn’t bring any specific personality to the book.

As the Guardians have moved to the front of the Marvel roster (thanks to the films), so too has their distinct flavor and quirkiness been shaved away. This is a perfectly enjoyable book (and I’ll keep reading it), but it isn’t anything memorable or exceptional.

The Final Gauntlet basically performs clean-up/reset post-Infinity Wars, but that event was such a dumpster fire that a clean-up/reset is exactly what the doctor ordered. The volume serves admirably in this role, despite the fact that it's packed with too many characters from too many sideplots. Basically, the whole Marvel cosmic universe shows up - all for the reading of Thanos' will.

Naturally, there's a twist: Thanos' will indicates that he'll be coming back to life soon. Uh-oh! The plot shifts quickly to a series of wild chases as cosmic heroes and villains rush across the galaxy to find Gamora or someone close to her. It's actually a fairly simplistic storyline, which makes the diverse assortment of characters work - I don't have to care about any of them, aside from knowing whose team they're on. It does kinda suck, though, that I have no idea why Rocket's missing or Drax is dead or Groot can talk. Probably something from Infinity Wars that I never picked up on because that series was terrible.

The artwork in The Final Gauntlet is solid and super colorful - the final battle in particular is gorgeous and frickin' sweet. I haven't been caught up in an action scene like that in a while. It felt good! Like, this is what Marvel comics are supposed to feel like!

3.5

Donny Cates jumped into my library with the incredible Thanos books. Cates has the ability to maintain a frenetic pace and that is the best part of this book. When you look at the cover of this book it just looks amazing and if you are a fan of the GOTG, you'll be in for a treat here. I'm obviously missing the bigger arc of the storyline but it's not essential.

Why the 3.5?

This is my first Cates book that I didn't love. It has a lot of fun but it's somewhat formulaic. The action hits all the standard story beats and that twist was predictable. I just expected more and this is one of those Cates storylines that doesn't work with his involvement. It's fun and action packed but it's one part of a bigger connection. I find Donny Cates is better left in his own universe with safety net removed. It's not a bad book but it's not his best.

It has Cates' tone, but the whole premise is flimsy. It's basically an epilogue to Infinity Wars but the idea that all of these people are going to do what they plan to do with almost no explanation is a little far-fetched. The story contains some exciting actions scenes and reforms the team. The art isn't bad either.

Cates also writes team books really well. Really enjoyed it. In addition to moving the main story forward, he defines distinct personalities for each character and then lets those personalities interact with eachother...or rather crash into eachother. Each also has some sort of character arc. Well crafted.

So I guess Donny Cates can't write a boring story huh?

Great read with solid artwork and lots of things happening. You need to know what happened before the events here of course (read Infinity Wars) and you'll be set, if you don't already know some facts, you'll have a lot of questions going in.

I think that Cates is not a writer, but he's some kind of builder, that whatever he creates, that creates a bunch of branches that create a bunch of different stories, but here's the deal with his stories and sub-stories being different from anyone else's, they're actually interesting and fun to read. Every single one of them. I have yet to read something he wrote and feel it was like a chore to read. And it doesn't even matter, you'll like his stuff even if you hate the characters in the title.

Anyway, that's enough praising. The story's good. Art's good. You'll like it for sure, especially if you're a Guardians fan.

PS. Please read Silver Surfer: Black after this volume! DO IT!

A lot of things have happened in the Marvel Universe pre and during 2019... Like wow this book had a few "*" text boxes that linked what a character said to a recent issue or series explaining those events. This was a wild ride that overall told a cohesive story - Thanos has died, but in a little post-death event he's threatened a plan to come back using someone else's body - and basically every cosmic hero is threatened or affected by the search for this Thanos-surrogate. The theme of death is just constant in this comic, with some really engaging personalities and side-changes. The art was great, with a few awesome moments, and the character interactions were short but pleasing. The new Guardians line-up is actually really interesting, and I'm keen to read further about how they handle the cosmic vacuum and threats left in Thanos's wake - but there's a lot of books on my reading list haha. Overall a fun read, just catch up on your recent Marvel Comics history first.

Better than the recent Infinity event, but writing this review a week later I still find it not to be that memorable.

So basically, everybody and their momma is after Gamora for her deeds in the Infinty Wars. I mean, I'd go after Duggan for writing that garbage, but alas.

Also I think Cosmic Ghost Rider makes jokes? Cause Cates wrote it, and he loves that guy so might as well throw him in.

First great GotG book since DnA.

I stuck around way too long during the dark Bendis age and I didn’t even try Duggan’s but I couldn’t pass this up. Cates and Shaw knock it out of the park assembling two new teams against a foe they know too well, Thanos.

It was an awesome and thrilling read.
