A Diamond of London's Glittering Ballrooms
Must Travel to the Ends of the Earth to Find Love...

It's 1825, and Lady Lydia Howick has accepted that the love of her life, Royal Marine Captain George Neville, has been killed in action with the Men of the Squadron in fierce fighting on West African Sherbro Island. She's moved on with her life until one day while at a Royal Academy exhibition of art from the Holy Land, she sees her supposedly dead lover in a group of figures painted in a desert caravan scene.

She can't rest until she's sure he's not suffering as a slave in the Middle East.

George Neville no longer considers himself worthy of the title of Royal Marine ever since being taken captive during an action against slavers. Once his captors realized his strength and abilities in battle, they forced him to be one of them, promising his eventual freedom if he helped enslave others. They held the threat of punishment of child slaves over his head if he did not obey orders.

After four horrific years in the slave trade, he's certain he's unworthy of anyone's love, let alone that of Lady Lydia. He refuses to sully her with the weight of his sins.

How can she forgive him? More importantly, how can he forgive himself?

Andrea K. Stein is a native Ohioan, the daughter of a trucker and an artist. She grew up a scribbler. The stories just spilled out--the pony escaped, the window magically shattered. Not her fault.

Twenty years as a journalist couldn't stifle the yarns. Yacht delivery up and down the Caribbean only increased the flow. Now those tales celebrate romance and adventure on the high seas.

Can her love heal all his wounds and smooth his sins …

I remember while reading the first of this series wondering when Lydia and Neuville would have their HEA.
And for four books, there were few mentions of them, until George’s disappearance.

This tale is not a straight line romance, it narrates one episode in the life of three couples, while sharing key moments from the main one.
For five years Lydia and George have been estranged, she believing him dead, him in hiding to complete his task but also feeling undeserving of her love.
The narrative is built around the search expedition Lydia is to undertake to get finally answers about Neuville’s fate. She is to travel with her aunt who herself escaped a harem and their maid Jane, each woman has a man longing in the shadow, and this journey is to see their relationship move one way or the other.

I wondered in which book Lydia’s aunt tale is said, as I am much curious about the trials she faced.
And how she rekindled her relationship with her childhood friend. Then there is Randall, the unconventional valet and his tender friendship with the lady’s maid Jane.
In all a lovely story filled with love, understanding and acceptance, I just would have loved to read a bit more about the two other couples.

This is the fifth book in the series & could easily be read on its own, another well written page turner. I was drawn in from the beginning & my interest held until the end. I loved both George & Lydia & whilst their journey to a HEA wasn’t easy it had me engrossed. George had to overcome his guilt & shame but Lydia was determined never to give up. I thoroughly enjoyed it & was routing for them all the way through

This has a really interesting storyline once you get into it. At first, I was a bit confused at who was who and I absolutely could not stand the back and forth time jumping that occurred. I understand the author's intent with how it was written as such but it was confusing to keep straight. Once the story got going and there wasn't so much back and forth, it was actually good although it did lag a few times.
This author is a first for me and I found her writing to be strong and very well put together.
What I did not care for-
*shallow characters -needed more character development (now this may have been because I had not previously read any of the previous books of the series but it should be able to be a stand-alone)
*choppy- needed less back and forth with time jumping and far too many short paragraphs and snippets of information (or story).
*no epilogue- it ended rather abruptly.
Overall I would urge readers to give this one a chance and to stick with it.
I received an advanced copy in exchange for my review

Ok story if a little confusing.

Glad George and Lydia resolved things between them.

Would love to know what happens with her aunt’s romance.

When Lydia discovers that her long lost love may be alive, she is determined to find him, and hopefully restore the love they once had. Lydia, her Aunt Lily, and lady’s maid Jane book passage to Algiers determined to find Captain George Neville. Their travel at sea and their destination are fraught with danger. They do not know they are being followed and guarded by a group of her father’s men led by Sergeant Randall (who is in love with Jane) and Squire Frederick (in love with Lili). Lydia finds George, but he has pain memories of his captivity and dangerous secrets. Their brief reunion is sometimes romantic, sometimes volatile. Will Lydia be able to convince the stubborn man that their love and future is possible? The action and adventure keep your attention, as does the wait to see If Lydia and George have an HEA. That answer does not come until the end of the book. The story draws you in, and there are all sorts of interesting characters. There are also two romances brewing on the side, so there just might be more than one HEA at the end of the journey. Great addition to the series. Entertaining read.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

This has been a great & well-written series. I enjoyed this one also, leaving London's society & heading to the Middle East. Captain George Neville loved Lady Lydia & they were to marry when he returned from his assignment but five years ago, he disappeared & presumed dead. When Lydia sees a painting done in Algiers, where George was last seen & the man in the picture was George. Lydia & her Aunt Lili are both stubborn, determined & likable & a trip to Algiers is on their agenda. This is an exciting & dangerous trip, even with the extra protection they didn't know they had until later in the story. George Neville is found alive & well with many things to try & explain to Lydia. I liked George & he was doing wonderful humanitarian work but I felt he treated Lydia badly in letting her continue to think he'd died but I know he was on a secret assignment. They did get their HEA but I wished we could have had an Epilogue to see their lives after they returned to London. I voluntarily read & reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts & opinions are my own.

Andrea K. Stein’s Pride of a Warrior - Men of the Squadron” Book 5

Lady Lydia Howick has accepted that the love of her life, Royal Marine Captain George Neville died on West African Sherbro Island. That is until she sees his image in a painting. She won’t, can’t rest until she knows for certain and so begins the adventure fraught with unknown danger.

This is a different storyline, interesting and compelling in it’s telling. It’s well written and paced. It can be read as a standalone but I suggest reading the series. I enjoyed the story and the characters and was completely immersed in the story. I had to see Lydia and George find their happily ever after. Andrea Stein is a new author to me but I will definitely be reading more of her work. This is a story of forgiveness, acceptance and love at its core. I would love to have an extended epilogue.

Thank you so much Ms. Stein for this fascinating love story.

Lady Lydia and Lady Lili are two very likeable characters. They are both brave and determined. Nothing will stop them from doing something they’ve set their mind to do. In this story they venture to Algiers, not something to take lightly in this age. I’m in two minds about the character of Captain George Neville, on the one hand I can understand what he is trying to do but I didn’t think he treated Lydia as well as he should have. I did enjoy this entertaining story and it did have a happy ending. Just one niggle, I found the ending quite abrupt and I do love an epilogue, which unfortunately this story didn’t have.

Maybe my favorite book in this series

The squadron of men charged with disrupting the slave trade on the west coast of Africa makes an excellent background for this series about individual members. This book goes inland and deeper into the business that was part of the African culture before markets opened in the new world. And, its a intriguing romance. It leaves London's drawing rooms for the sea and Algiers. A glimpse of an oasis at night and the crowded markets add depth to the feeling of adventure and romance.

The fifth book in the Men of the Squadron series, once I started I was not putting this book down. Lady Lydia Howick will go tom any lenght to find Royal Marine Captain George Neville the man she loves and make sure he is okay. Their story has suspense, drama, danger, villains, twists, turns, a surprise and romance. I would recommend. I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
