Come meet Max. She's brash. She's inked. She has a bad habit of dying... a lot. She's also a Rogue with a demon on her tail and not much backup. This witch has a bone to pick. I was burned at the stake at fourteen... I was drowned in a lake when I was twenty-four... At twenty-seven, I was stoned in a public square... I have died a hundred times in a hundred different ways, usually at the hands of the humans I've tried to save. But when a pregnant young woman finds her way into my tattoo shop with a demon on her tail, things go from bad to worse. Being a centuries-old witch isn't going to help me - nothing will. This time I might just die in a way that sticks... Permanently. The Rogue Ethereal Complete Series contains all six books in this thrilling urban fantasy series.
Annie Anderson is the author of the international bestselling Rogue Ethereal series. A United States Air Force veteran, Annie pens fast-paced Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy novels filled with strong, snarky heroines and a boatload of magic. When she takes a break from writing, she can be found binge-watching The Magicians, flirting with her husband, wrangling children, or bribing her cantankerous dogs to go on a walk.
I'm lucky that I read this after I had read another series by this author. This is obviously one of her earlier works. It gets better, honest.
My minor issues with this series are, no particular order, the lack of editing, the somewhat slap dash characterization, the absolute nightmare lack of cohesion, and the amazingly non-linear progression of the plot.
My major issue is this series was the complete lack of justification for the ramping up of the enemies this character faces,as well as her own ever changing and increasing abilities. Instead of building on strengths or making any kind of logical progression, this character literally changes species every couple of books.
Since easily 1/8 of the text is taken up with the main character ruminating on how stupid this is, I can't imagine that the author wasn't aware of how ridiculous this became. Nevertheless, she didn't actually do anything about it - she just talked about her ridiculous her own ideas were. That really made it hard to finish this series. If I hadn't been reading it as the box set I probably would not have read the last book at all.
Still, this got three stars from me because there were a number of details that were compelling - strong friendships, character and relationship no development on several fronts that kept me reading. Even though the main character felt like three different characters slapped together, she was interesting. The theme of the importance of consent and honesty actually continued throughout. Also, finally, her relationship with her husband was both consistent and good, if someone lacking in actual connection and characterization. I mean, the actually getting married part was a total farce, but the marriage itself offered something besides good sex for the main character, which is sometimes rare.
Still, this (I assume first) series is a good indicator the author's strengths, and hopefully you can all just take my word for it that the editing, planning, and characterization improve in later series by this author.
I thought these were great books. The heroine was funny in her snark and wit. She wasn't some dramatic idiot trying to go against everyone like readers sometime see in the genre. Instead, she is a woman who keeps getting curve balls thrown at her that she deals with however she can think to. This makes things all the more interesting considering she has been a rogue for 400 years and is self taught. In time we find out why she has cool powers. No one is what they seem, including her. That being said, the family tree gets kinda confusing in the last book lol. There isn't any sex but there are interests and eventually she does settle with someone. Plenty of cussing. Plenty of badassery action. Great world building (in fact, lots of world building considering the different realms). There is pretty much every type of ethereal in these books (witches, vampires, weres, changelings, fae, gods, etc). in general, it was a well written series.
I was honestly pretty blown away by this series. I read a lot of fantasy-adventure novels through Kindle Unlimited. Most of the ones I’ve found are YA, which is fine, but they all seem to follow the same formula. This was much more adult, but better yet it put a spin on every other KU fantasy novel out there. Our hero doesn’t just suddenly stumble into finding out she’s the most powerful whatever and has to save the world, training and mastering everything in a week. She’s a 400 year old witch who starts out already incredibly powerful and strong. She still has a lot to learn, and there’s more to her power than anybody guesses, but we’re lead through her journey in an exciting, believable way. She’s crude, angry, doesn’t take anybody’s shit and utterly likeable. Her character grows and develops as she learns more about herself and her world, cementing long-awaited relationships and (yes) saving the hell out of things. The other characters are relatable; flawed, but full of love and and anger and secrets that just make you fall in love with them. Supernatural mixed with religion and mythology in a way I entirely new to the vast majority of books in its genre. I will definitely be reading more from Annie Anderson. Highly recommend!
This is the box set version, comprising the whole series of the Rogue Ethereal books.
They’re all excellent reads, and there is no danger of cliffhangers with a box set- because the next book is a page turn away! It’s an engrossing saga, following Max in her current life, explaining her many deaths, and finally ending with a wonderfully happy ending. I thoroughly enjoyed the books, and the story itself- which is not a surprise as Annie Anderson is a talented writer.
It captured my attention just enough for the first 4 books and I really had to push myself to finish the rest. There's no stakes or downfalls. Everything seems to end up a-ok for the mc. It may go bad but it'll get fixed and if you think it won't. Just wait. It will. The character is snarky and full of herself and while it might seem entertaining at first it gets annoying and childish after awhile. And you could say being childish makes sense after her upbringing but not really when she's over 400 years old by now...
Oh wow this book is fast paced kick ass heroine/ badass takes no crap and pulls no punches. The quick wit makes the bonds that are formed really funny and how you should be with your friends. Max is the kind of girl friend everyone should have in their lives. I loved loved loved this series and am now at a loss at what to read that will be equally as good and as enjoyable.
My only complaint is that there was no indication (to a newbie, unfamiliar with all of the authors prior work) that this was a spin off series. I really struggled in book 1 to figure out what was going on and what the world was all about. I hung on because a friend gave a great rating to the series, and I’m glad I did. I ended up loving it.
But, if informed, I would have read the Ashes to Ashes series first.
Hilarious, real as fantasy characters can be with the best characters
I just loved it all, every moment was captivating or funny. Escapism at its best! Max says what we all are thinking in the most direct way possible moving the storyline along at the speed of light. Don't plan on sleeping once you begin this tale...
I loved these books. I couldn't put them down until the end. Strong characters and fast paced action keep you glued to the books and keep you wanting to go on until you find out what is going to happen after all is said and done. It was a breath of fresh air for me. Thank you for these books.
A melting pot of of supernatural characters! This series has everything and everyone! The heroine is a complete badass! This series is a continually building epic adventure, the villains get bigger and badder with each book. The character finally gets her HEA in the end, but the romance doesn’t come til the last few books.
This was a fun series and there was a lot of action and adventure. The characters were great, got into all sorts of interesting adventures. There was also a lot of fun action and magic. I really enjoyed this series, especially all in one book. Read it in me sitting and was a day well spent. I recommend this series and book.
I really wanted to like this book. I only got a few chapters in. I just couldn't get past how she has a near death experience stg 10 times in the first 15 chapters, but is in perfect health the next morning. And dear God you only have to mention her huge rack once, not at the beginning of ever chapter!! Author has a breast fetish.
I struggled a bit with the first book, but I'm so glad I persevered. This series is incredible. Amazing characters and world building. Love, love, love!!!
Some may not like the cursing. Whatever. I curse a lot so I wasn't bothered by it. Made me connect to Max that much faster by making her seem real. It was an epic ride and I'm only sad that I finished it. But I look forward to reading her other works.
These books kept me gripped from start to finish - the characters are all unique, realistic and the family and loyalty shown along with the twists turns and funny and heart warming and heart breaking points make it a well rounded and addictive read for people of all ages…
Max's story is an addiction, I have read this series twice already and will most likely read it again in the future! Max is an amazing badass and I love her attitude and overall personality! Honestly, I wish there were more than just 5 stars.
Ok if you like witches and Gods you will love these books, they have a little of everything. Battles in he'll and in far oh that right far too. Pick these up. You will love them
It took me 3 days to read this series. First thanks so much for writing like a real person. The inner voice the figures of speech. It all helped to build an amazing cast of characters
What a wonderful series! I was sad to see it end. It was well written and kept me on my toes. I always had to put a pause on reading when I felt I was being left on a cliff!
Easy, fast paced read with all the twists and turns. I definitely didn’t see a lot of things coming and absolutely love the way that mythology is incorporated into this series!!! Wish more were like these!
Holy wow, what an amazing read. I loved Max, and she just got more bada$$ as her story continued. Her amazing love for her family and friends, as well as her unending need to do the right thing. Magic, demons, supernaturals gods and so much more.
Max is amazing. She is funny, smart, powerful and basically everything you want in a strong female character. There are other series that the author has written that should be read before this one to understand the storyline easier (ashes to ashes).
