Exile from ShadowClan

Rate this book
ShadowClan faces two paths. Only one will save its legacy.

On the verge of a bitter leaf-bare, ShadowClan stands on the brink of its own destruction. Its leader, Brokenstar, is bent on nothing but battle and revenge. His former mentor, retired warrior Nightpelt, hasn’t had an easy path, but he has always put his Clanmates first. So when Brokenstar banishes Nightpelt and the rest of ShadowClan’s elders to the farthest edges of Clan territory, Nightpelt is shocked at his cruelty. But he’s determined to ensure he and his fellow exiles survive the coming frost—and live to reclaim the ShadowClan they’ve always known.

Above average for a Warriors series book, average for a graphic novel.

Additionally I noticed that a larger amount of panels than the other comics appeared to be on solid-colour backgrounds, as though not enough time were given to finish the pages properly.

"Yeah, well, if a frog had wings, he wouldn't bump his rear end when he hopped."

Hear me out, this is the ultimate in radical lit we need to stage a revolution/riot. Published in 2022, I can't help but think the Erins (and Dan Jolley, who I guess is technically an Erin?) had at least some global current events in mind when putting this together, as it's a perfect tale of resistance and communism prevailing over fascism.

Set in the Brokenstar era of Shadowclan, we get yet another glimpse into some different perspectives than The Prophecies Begin gave us. The original series very much marked Shadowclan as the evil clan, high on dictatorial rule and ethnic cleansing, and for the most part, that is what they stand for. What this graphic novel does is provide insight into clan divisions and show that not every cat was on board with the clan's politics. Where TPB portrayed Shadowclan as a whole evil entity, Exile shows individual cats resisting Brokenstar's rule in different ways.

Brokenstar is an obvious tyrant and under him, we see his followers become frogs in the pot of boiling water. At first, it's just prioritizing battle training over hunting, they go along with it because that makes sense. They learn to ignore their hunger. But soon, there are kits training to fight way too young, then the trainings intensify, then so do the conflicts, then come the battles...as we see in real life, it's easy for a group to go along with these incremental changes without realizing the larger descent into authoritarianism and fascism.

Cats who do realize it don't fare well either, though. Brokenstar banishes cats who disagree with him. He exiles cats unable to serve his agenda, and so while the elders are shocked when he kicks them out of the immediate territory, it isn't surprising in terms of Brokenstar's penchant for usefulness in battle only. With no other choice at the time, the elders build their own camp nearby, and thus begins the most beautiful mini-clan the Warriors universe has ever seen.

I want to talk about Nightpelt because he is Such A Good Boy, and I wish I'd paid more attention to him in other books. A bit of a foil to Brokenstar but also the star of this book, Nightpelt is a selfless cat who leads from the fringes of his clan. When presented with the unthinkable by being exiled from Shadowclan, Nightpelt feels his feelings but then quickly focuses on the more immediate matters at hand: building shelter and protecting the elders. His unflinching willingness to take responsibility for everyone in their group shows his strength of character.

"I know this...this situation we're in here is...it's new, and strange, and none of us know how to deal with it. But we're all still Shadowclan cats and we look after each other."

Where Brokenstar sees a group of weak cats due mostly to their age, Nightpelt sees their usefulness in caring for each other. Together, they build a camp, hunt and feed each other, and help treat the sick and injured. As they watch Shadowclan's descent into tyranny, some of them question what they can do to stop it. It is Nightpelt's encouragement that helps them team up with Thunderclan to drive Brokenstar out. Once an oppressed group truly realizes they outnumber the oppressors, there is no stopping them.

"I can't help but think I might have done a few things differently, if I were in charge..."

Nightpelt never thinks about a leadership role, but he is a natural bosscat. Where Brokenstar is merely interested in power through his military and acquirement of other clans' kits and territory, Nightpelt values community efforts that give everyone purpose and value, no matter how old or sick or disabled they are. He himself is an asthmatic boi struggling with a cough everyday and doesn't let it hinder his efforts to protect his people. Brokenstar's actions to exile the elder cats is harsh and ruthless; Nightpelt's strength is in his resistance to the narrative that they are useless just because they're old.

"When Brokenstar sent me here—when he exiled us—I thought my life was over. It wasn't just me, either. The elders, like Archeye and Hollyflower, thought they were too old to be of use to ShadowClan. But look at how all the cats here have worked together! We all have something to contribute. We all take care of each other. This is what a Clan should be. That's what I've realized. And it's what Brokenstar doesn't know."

Starclan...supports Brokenstar's efforts a little too much for my liking. I found it bizarre they wouldn't take his nine lives away after he was driven out, just because he successfully carried out his authoritarian dreams. Like. Homeboy still had a terrible endgame, y'all, we don't need him to retain shit. As a result of this, Nightpelt, now Nightstar, does not get nine lives. The world is a cruel bitch.

Loved the art in this full-color edition, I do tend to enjoy the "manga" art more than the more recent graphic novel art. That they made Brokenstar a raggedy old bitch warms my heart, and especially fun are the different settings, like Mothermouth.

Let's go overthrow some shit, y'all.

I loved this manga. I always loved Nightstar and the kind of leader he was, and it was lovely to see his POV of Brokenstar's rule and how he had to live with it. I definitely think that StarClan did Nightstar dirty though. Like you won't give him nine lives because Brokenstar is the "true" leader? The dude killed kits. KITS. At this point I'm surprised the Clans even listen to StarClan anymore.

I also love that the manga's are now fully coloured: it just gives the book so much more life! Definitely worth picking up and reading! A very quick read as well!

Very cool fill-in story from the clans' fascist era. Reminded me about how cool Nightstar is and how horrible and hypocritical StarClan's decisions are. I was always under the impression that StarClan *couldn't* give Nightstar nine lives because Brokenstar was still alive. The fact that *they could but chose not to* is astounding.

I always enjoy the graphic novels, but this one had a special something about it. Seeing Nightpelt, who is sick, still do the best he can even when others think little of him, is so inspiring to me, a sick person who can't do as much as I used to.

This book marks the fall of ShadowClan due to Brokestar in Nightpelt's perspective. It's starts with him and the elders being kicked out of camp. He makes a life there but they slowly get more cats due o injurys, grief, and disagreements (aka anything Brokenstar decided to be a weakness onto the clan). He even learned about the poor treatment of kits, lack of focus on anything but fighting, and the banishment of Yellowfang. It reaches a boiling point when he learns the kidnapped ThunderClan kits so they uprised. Afterwards they make Nightpelt leader (unfortunately he can't get his 9 lives thanks to Nightpelt still being alive.)

Honestly loved hearing about this as a book. There's surprisingly a lot of plot in this for a subject you think wouldn't have it. I wish we could have seen how Nightpelt reacted to his brother killing Spottedleaf once he found out, but I'll take what I can get. Truly it makes the reader really want Nightpelt to officially become Nightstar in the eyes of StarClan. Nightstar takes it really well, all things considered, and goes through the story with a very interesting voice to the whole story. 10/10

So good actually. Like I’m shocked because i haven’t been impressed by the manga thus far, but this really hit. I actually kind of want to reread the first couple books of TPB because this really gave great insight as to what was going on in shadowclan. Great addition to the story.

This is definitely one of the better mangas! There wasn't any contradictions from the main series, and everything seemed to line up perfectly.

I enjoyed Nightpelt's perspective a lot, but only wish he'd been able to become an actual leader! He deserved it after fixing ShadowClan from that mess.

ShadowClan's leader Brokenstar is letting his clan fall apart because all he is focused on is battle and revenge. He banishes his former mentor Nightpelt and the elders from the camp so the rest of the clan no longer has to take care of them. Nightpelt vows to care for the elders. As Brokenstar becomes more erratic and banishes more cats, Nightpelt decides that they must do something to defeat Brokenstar and reclaim ShadowClan.

This is a great look back on the clans when they lived in the forest.

Very impressive watching Nightpelt play a crucial role in protecting the elders and leading the rebellion against Brokenstar even with a physical disability. Seeing that Volepaw actually survived is a very nice touch, and I got to simp for Featherstorm and Brightflower because I got to see for myself how cute they are. Great book, really looking forward to the next graphic novel.

Nightpelt is thrown with challenges as the leadership of Brokenstar becomes more and more challenging for ShadowClan. WhenNightpelt is thrown out of the camp along with the elders, he watches from afar as the rest of the struggling ShadowClan cats are forced to battle WindClan to prove their strength. Kits and apprentices are being challenged like never before, and ShadowClan’s medicine cat is exiled. Nightpelt will have to confront with cats he usually thinks of as enemies if he wants to lead his Clanmates to confronting the wrathful leader, Brokenstar.

This graphic novel was not yet published during my first read-through of this series, although it takes place concurrently with Into the Wild. I felt this was a great expansion of the story and of Nightpelt’s character. Experiencing Brokenstar’s tyranny firsthand instead of hearing of it through Yellowfang was incredibly interesting.

2023: Man I still loved this one - I love Nightstar - and yes he will always be Nightstar to me even though StarClan refused to give him 9 lives, I wish that we had this badass leader with health afflictions showing that even those that aren't fully healthy can lead and I am still sad that we never got Nightstar because StarClan couldn't give him 9 lives since Brokenstar was still alive. I am so so mad because they could do it when Rowanstar stepped down, when Pinestar left the forest but they couldn't do it now - and I still hate that welp we couldn't do anything about Brokenstar since he promised that he will make ShadowClan strong and he did it lol - let us just disregard that he killed two innocent kits, blamed Yellowfang, exiled elders and made a ton of kids die prematurely because he started training them too early- gosh this book made me loathe StarClan all over again.

2022: I wanted to like this one more, I really did... but it was just okay. We barely learn anything new, StarClan absolutely infuriates me in this one because they are all like: "oh we can't do anything until Brokenstar dies he is your leader even though he killed others including kits" - and i feel like Nightpelt was a really weak protagonist. I wish that we saw him in his kithood/apprenticeship and that we learned more about him in general, but we barely learn anything new compared to the main series book he was in, they completely turn his character around when he is all like: "oh it's not right that WindClan was exiled" - when in the book he was pretty happy that they were gone and he didn't want them to come back because he felt like ShadowClan needed extra hunting grounds, and don't even get me started on the sudden redemption of Clawface that came out of nowhere, he was a bad guy, he was established a bad guy in the first series. He stole kits and he killed Spottedleaf but this book paints him as a poor misguided character who just wanted to do what he thought was right and who just followed a cat he thought was a good leader. Overall, an okay but pretty weak book.

I really enjoy looking back at the earlier arcs through these graphic novels, although I honestly don't remember a lot of specifics about other clans from the first arc. I thought I remembered who nightpelt was, then the starclan but at the end confirmed it. But I like how these stories follow cats in other clans whose tales we only saw from afar. It provides more depth where the main arc tend to focus on thunderclan, and therefore other clans are seen through the eyes of thunderclan cats. Sometimes the characterization is a bit off, but I'll allow it. In shadowclan especially, it seems like there's always so much posturing and showing a brave face to other clans to seem tough and superior. So when we see a softer side to nightpelt here when he's in a smaller group with different responsibilities...idk, I buy it. It's easy to assign blame to shadowclan, but making them seem like real, well rounded characters via these graphic novels just makes the reader's view of the clan stronger. Not every person or cat can be tough and strong 100% of the time, and I like that we're seeing some vulnerability from them. There was a little villain monologuing toward the end, but meh. It felt kind of like that cat lashing out to hurt others with words when his actions finally were challenged.

I also really appreciated nightpelt's illness - as someone with asthma, it's easy to feel broken and dwell on not being able to keep up sometimes. But nightpelt focused on what he COULD do and took his herbs to feel better..idk, I appreciate when characters take their meds in any situation haha I'm glad they have inhaler equivalent herbs in the warriors world ☺️

I had the worst day ever yesterday, and it was nice to spend some time with shadowclan (that feels weird to say lol)

Also, anything where yellowfang shows up to grumpily sass her way around is just that much better to me haha 🐈‍⬛

Idk if this deserves five stars, but I really enjoyed it all the way through and didn't see any major flaws.

For some reason I thought this was about Blackstar and the time he was living as a rogue with Tigerstar. Not sure why? Is there another book about that? Anyway, you can imagine my surprise when this was about Nightstar instead.

Initially I thought the concept of the elders being kicked out was a little far-fetched, especially since I don't remember that happening in the OG series. But I liked how it dove into the psychology of the characters, and how they all tried to justify every single atrocity to themselves. I thought the book also successfully did what Bluestar's Prophecy failed to do: see how a leader came to be a leader. I liked how Nightpelt changed throughout the book and became someone that other cats relied on, even with his illness. In Bluestar's Prophecy you don't really understand why Sunstar chooses her as deputy. In this book, you see Nightpelt take charge again and again and always put the Clan's well-being first. It makes sense that they chose him to lead.

I loved how the ending mirrored Into the Wild, and by the climax I got just as hyped up as I do during that book. And during the nine lives ceremony, it was interesting how StarClan kind of had a "reap what you sow" mentality - yeah Brokenstar is evil, but you all chose him as leader, so we can't give someone else nine lives? Hmm...there seemed to be a difference between "can't" and "won't" there.

I'm just so glad Dan Jolley is still writing for the series. No matter how much the main series has gone off the rails, he is still consistently good. I've enjoyed all the graphic novels he's put out, especially since they tend to take place during the books I've actually read.

Honestly, I was expecting a lot worse from this graphic novel. I thought that there would be canon contradictions left and right and constant mischaracterization. But nothing stood out to me as glaringly wrong, and I genuinely enjoyed getting a story from Nightpelt's perspective. He's the leader ShadowClan deserves, and I hate how fickle StarClan was when they refused to give him nine lives. At least he had a good run without their help.

I especially like how his disability was portrayed in this graphic novel. Nightpelt's perspective on and experience with life contrasts nicely with Brokenstar's ableism, since Nightpelt possesses the knowledge that disability is not life-ending or all-encompassing. He learns this philosophy from and helps teach it to the other cats in exile, who really grew on me throughout the course of the story. Some of James L. Barry's cat designs are a little too humanoid for my tastes, specifically the ones like Onestar who have longer faces. But Nightpelt's design is adorable, and so is Poolcloud's and Brightflower's. I like their rounder face shapes and the colors that Barry uses, and I like their roles in the story, too.

As always, it's nice to have a graphic novel in full color, and I will miss James L. Barry's contributions to the Warrior cats series. His style has really grown on me, and I appreciate how distinct his cat designs are. Even the black cats are easy to tell apart, the way that he varies face shape and color highlights.

This graphic novel delves into Nightpelt’s — a Shadowclan cat’s — journey to becoming a leader during the fall of Shadowclan under Brokenstar’s leadership. This recounts the events of Into the Wild, Book 1 in the Warriors: The Prophecies Begin series, but from Shadowclan’s perspective rather than Thunderclan’s. This made for a unique and intriguing read (think having a graphic novel told from Slytherin’s perspective in the Harry Potter series). Since Thunderclan cats are the main protagonists of the Warriors series, I really enjoy how this and other Warriors graphic novels tell more stories from the other clans. I was impressed by how this book delves into some heavy topics— dictatorship, child soldiers, elder abuse, and ableism— in a kid-appropriate way. It’s easy for readers of all ages to understand how people (or cats, in this case) can fall prey to brainwashing, fear, and control, and how important it is to speak up and stand up for what’s right. Definitely a strong addition to the Warriors collection!

YOOOO, they screwed over my boi Nightpelt over here. They're all like, "ShadowClan has a leader, it's Brokenstar, the guy who just genocided an entire clan, framed his child murder on the doctor, and killed his own father for power."

And like, PINESTAR never got that! Like Pinestar left all his homies and StarClan wasn't all, "Well tough luck Sunstar, you're gonna just not have 9 lives until Pinestar dies. But now he's a vaccinated kittypet and will live an extra 10 years, so you and the cat after you are out of luck."

And I don't want the argument of, "Raggedstar said that Brokenstar lived by his promise. Pinestar didn't live by his promise, he was supposed to kill his son and didn't." Like is that what's sacred? You follow your new leader resolution and you can wreck everything and still keep all 9 lives. Like this is bogus man. #JusticeForNightpelt
