There’s a dead man on the floor. And somebody is knocking on the door!
Her trusty feline familiar, Rumpus, is passed out in the bathtub. It looks like a setup.
They weren’t lying when they said middle age was full of surprises!
She can’t go to her boyfriend, Jon. As Chief of Police, he’d have a nasty conflict of interest. The truth is that Ruby looks like the suspect. And there’s nothing or no one on the good side of the law that can help her.
So…she teams up with the mob.
That’s right. She calls her nemesis, Benito Lombardi. Call it crazy, but she believes him when he tells her that he has too much respect and if he wanted her gone, he’d take her out openly.
Now Ruby and Rumpus have a whole new cast of characters who are helping them, and they’re not all good guys. But they all have one thing in common. They need to find the killer who set Ruby up. Because this time she may have woken up drugged and groggy.
Ruby Diamond woke up in an unfamiliar motel room with a dead man on the floor! She was holding things together until somebody started knocking on the door and she panicked! She made the body fade to nothing and opened the door to housekeeping, declining the woman’s services. She was now pretty sure she had been drugged. Looking around for her feline familiar, Rumpus, she finds him unconscious in the bathtub with the water running. This is looking more and more like a setup. She couldn’t call Jon, her Chief of Police boyfriend, when she looks absolutely guilty. So her next disordered thought was to call the mob and Benito Lombardi agrees to help her. As he so expertly put it, if he wanted her dead, he would have killed her openly and not through a setup like this.
They need to quickly find the killer who set Ruby up and why. If someone had been able to get past the lighthouse’s defenses which were there to protect them, they could have murdered them rather than just moved them to this motel!
This story was full of action, fun characters, and a mystery that will keep the reader guessing. The fast pace, the character development, and the mystery were excellent, the plot was well-written and suspenseful. If this is the first book you have read in this series, be sure to go back and read the others. It will be worth your time. Will the mob be able to get answers for Ruby? Will the perpetrators make another try at grabbing her? Grab your copy and get the answers as to what is going on here!
Ruby Diamond wakes up in a motel room not remembering how she or her familiar cat Rumpus got there. The also happens to be the dead body of a man neither know in the room. She does not want to involve Jon, her boyfriend who also happens to be the Police Chief so she reaches out to Benito Lombardi, a man suspected of being a mob boss to help her get rid of the body and figure out what’s going on. A new character named Lizard is added to the story as he is supposed to be the help sent by Benito.
In the mean time, Jon asks her to come over to dinner as his Aunt, Uncle and adopted cousin have dropped in to visit. Yes, all three happen to be Merfolk just like Jon. Ruby is also having to deal with issues her apprentice Allie is having. It appears that Allie’s Dad has begun drinking again. The young teen ager does not want to start taking care of her Dad again so Ruby lets her stay with her as the father and daughter need space to work out their issues.
Oh yeah, Ruby and Rumpus are supposed to meet with an informant but actually get ambushed by some Trogs.
Read on to find out what happens during the fight with the Trogs, how Lizard joins forces to assist Ruby and who the killer is.

This is another fun, action-packed mystery. Ruby wakes up in an unfamiliar hotel room...with a dead body nearby, making her look like the culprit. Unfortunately her familiar Rumpus was also unconscious, so can't provide any help or information. She doesn't want to involve her boyfriend Jon since he is the chief of police (major conflict of interest), so she turns to...the mob? Sounds odd, but Benito may be a mobster, but he's honest (???). If he wanted her dead, he'd just kill her, not this set-up stuff. There is a lot going on here. Add to the murder/mystery, there are issues with Ruby's apprentice, and dinner with Jon and some of his relatives. So who wants Ruby dead or discredited? How far will they go? Will they try again? I really love this series, and the humor and snark, but I have to say the editing/proofreading on this book was subpar. Too many mistakes made me deduct a star from my rating. If this is your first read in this series, I hope the errors won't keep you away from the previous books in the series. There were certainly a few errors here and there, but nothing like this one. You'd be missing some good reads.

This is an entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series. Great cast of characters and a fun and entertaining storyline. Ruby diamond is a witch in fact she is a Waterwitch for Seawitch. She lives in a lighthouse in the small New England town where she grew up. She lived in New York City for a while but after 20 years move back after her aunt knucklehead passed away. Previously her aunt and uncle lived in the lighthouse and were the magical watchers over the town. Now that is Ruby‘s job along with her familiar her apprentice and her boyfriend the local police chief she help solve a lot of crimes sometimes involving paranormal issues and other times just mundane issues. Always a fun adventure and entertaining to read. Check it out
Another great book by Winters! I adore this whole series — anything by Winters really. Always well-written, well-paced, likable and complex characters, plus a great mystery. Every time I think it can’t get better, Winters proves us wrong. Can’t wait for the next book!

Ruby and her cat Rumpus wake up in a strange room with a dead body. Fearing she'll be the prime suspect she asks the mob to help her solve this instead of her cop boyfriend.

My issue with this particular book in the series was the vast number of typos. It is distracting from the storyline. Even the protagonist’s name was misspelled as”Ryby”.
The plot itself was imaginative and interesting. Looking forward to the next In series
This series is so good! I absolutely love Rumpus. He is so funny! I loved how he handled things throughout the story. I’m so ready to start the next book!
