Veslor Mates #5

The Torid Affair

Rate this book
When riots erupt on planet Torid, the crew of Defcon Red is tasked with quelling the violence and tending the injured. Even Alien Research Specialist Jessa Brick is pressed into service. Arguably more comfortable in her lab, the doctor is shocked at the obvious inequality on Torid. She vows to help every citizen, rich or poor, even if it runs counter to the colony governor’s wishes…and means working closely with a certain grumpy alien.

Veslor medic Maith has long been annoyed by the prickly Dr. Brick and her repeated attempts to study his race like lab rats. But working together on Torid shows him a different side of Jessa. The closer they become, the more his admiration and attraction grows…especially when he’s ordered to keep Jessa safe. That means they must stay together every minute during the mission. As danger closes in, it’s not just duty that drives Maith to protect Jessa. Primal Veslor instincts are impossible to deny.

I had a rather short area here telling a little about me but then I had more than a few people ask me to expand it so... here goes. LOL. I'm a full time home 'supervisor' which is a nice word for saying I'm a housewife. I'm married happily, I met my dream guy 20 years ago, and we have 4 children. I live in Southern California and I can't function without iced coffee. I believe in romance, I've always been a daydreamer, and I'm a HUGE fan of books, always have been.

No, I didn't know that I always wanted to write. I inhaled books as a child. I read entire series (Pippi Longstocking, Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, Trixie Beldon, The Borrowers, etc) in a matter of days at a time. By the time I was nine years old I had an adult library card where I visited often. I moved on to John Saul, Stephen King, Richard Laymon, Agatha Christie, and then found romance. I was hooked. I wrote poetry in my teens and then moved on to short stories. My first book was started after I read a real bomb of a book that ticked me off with really horrible characters and a plot that was shabby at best and I thought... I could do better. LOL.

I wrote my first book which will probably never see the light of day in the early 90's. I wrote a series of a few books from it. I'm a series fan! I kept writing for fun, wrote MANY books and then in 2009 I decided to try to get published. I wrote my first Sci Fi romance and Ral's Woman came to be. I submitted it and with a little tweaking, Ellorascave sent me an acceptance letter. It was kind of a 'Cinderella' experience for me. It's been a terrific ride so far and I'm really happy that I finally had the time to commit to writing full time. It's a dream come true.

This one was actually and unexpectedly good!
I liked both H and h! They were logical in their actions and even if the H became possessive and somewhat unreasonable in his desire to protect the h, he also knew when to stop.
A linear and nice story.

Jessa and Maith somehow became my favorite couple. The fighting between these two throughout the whole series has been epic. I knew they would be fire together and they did not disappoint. And all the added drama of a corrupt human settlement and having to pretend to be dating and Maith telling everyone they are a copulating couple and need privacy. I laughed so hard. This literally had one bed, fake dating, and “who hurt you” in one story! That beginning was strong and it just got better and better.

I was so angry when I found out about Jessa and her sister Annabel’s upbringing. And honestly after this story I’m very concerned with what the Fleet and United Earth is doing with its off planet orphans. There seems to be a lot of orphans that are being taken advantage of. I’m not even surprised that the Fleet or United Earth would do this to orphans in outer space. They technically belong to them and there are no orphanages or place to take these kids. I’m just so sad and angry it’s happening.

I’m very curious to see what will happen in the next story with Anabel. This story was so entertaining I can’t wait.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is my favorite Dohner series and this book was the one I was waiting for! These two belong together even if they fight like cats and dogs. I'm also excited at the possibility of learning about a new grouping with the hunt for Jessa's sister. The more Veslor book the better.

It was hard enough to find a book I was interested in nothing gripped me until I found a sci-fi alien romance which is my jam. A guilty pleasure.

However although the backstory was good the MC chemistry was null. Enemies to lovers but I felt no development.

You know what they say....there's a thin line between love and hate.

Jessa and Maize, longtime snarky snapping enemies are forced to spend time together. All that pent of animosity turns to ramped up attraction. Then boom...they can't keep their hands or mouths off each other.

Laurann writes such original stories and great bad guys and this one was a doozy.I don't want to give too much of the story away. Jessa and Maize helped care for the victims of the corrupt government of Torid, and were willing to do anything to make sure the despicable slimy leaders were brought to justice. Even putting themselves in the line of fire to make sure the bad guys couldn't make an escape. It was an action packed rollercoaster.

I can't wait to read the next one, which I assume is about Jessa's spy sister, Anabel. Great job as always!!

More than meets the eye

This book was so good I had to read it twice before I posted my review! I love the enemies to lovers vibe, and I enjoyed getting to see another side of the good doctor. From the previous books, I just knew these two were meant for each other, if he could just knock the chip off his shoulder. The author kept the angst and action high intensity throughout the story keeping me enthralled until the very end. From humanitarian relief to fighting bad guys, these two make an amazing couple! I can’t wait to see what happens next with the Veslors!

Talk about two peas from same pod. These two fought that get outta my space hard. The dramatically drama, heat, quick wit, suspense, couldn't put this down. The whole what next was great. So far out of the 5 this one my favorite. Thanks👩🏾‍💻🍷🍿

2021 Read: 5 stars!

I've been waiting for the story of these two since a few books back. I kept crossing my fingers that these two would end up together. I am not disappointed.

I liked the story, I just didn't feel the chemistry between the characters or the love, I think they went from nothing to everything too fast and I never saw Matt interested in her.
The plot is good but the love relationship is mediocre.

Great read! Plus hint at new grouping?

I was thrilled that Maith and Jessa got together FINALLY! I was hopefully that the author wasn’t ending the Velcro series, and wasn’t disappointed! Can’t wait to read about the “Hunters”. I would recommend this book to anybody wanting to escape the norm. Read and enjoy :)

I enjoyed this book. They have been arguing with each other for the last three books. They are both doctors.

It looks like her sister the spy who is stranded on a primitive planet will be rescued by the "Hunters" another group of Veslors. I bet she is the next book.

I recommend the entire Veslor series.

Fiesty

Jessa is definitely fiesty. She doesn't put up with anything from anyone, and I love it. What was done to her made me really mad, and it's ridiculous.

Good

Locked into Indentured servitude to Earth Fleet from a young age, Dr. Jessa Brick has to go where she is told to.
Sent to help a colony on Torid, she works with the Veslor medic Maith to help the injured.
When the situation becomes dire, she and Maith have to work together, putting aside their differences…

Jessa and Maith have had a bit of a tumultuous relationship with each other so far. We first ran across Jessa in Darla and Gnaw’s story (The Breeding Experiment), and ever since then, she and Maith have been at each other’s throats; so it was especially nice to see them admit their attraction and fall for each other.
We learn a lot more (not so great things) about some of the stuff that Earth fleet does, as well as Jessa’s own history; and are treated to the last of this Veslor grouping’s males finding his mate.

This is, as expected from Laurann Dohner, a well paced and well written book. There is a lot of action, and a setup for subsequent stories.
A quick cameo from previous heroines and heroes in the series rounds out the tale, leaving this reader perfectly satisfied (and wanting more).

Another amazing sci-fi romance from Laurann Dohner, that fans of both her and the genre will enjoy.

The Torid Affair

Oh my gosh jumping up and down here 😉 I am so happy Jessa and Maith finally got together. I was so hoping they were for each other. The world building continues to be awesome. Oh my goodness I really hope Jessa's sister is the next story with the Hunters. I really can't wait to read the next book in this series. I would highly recommend this book and this series. Wonderful!! 😁

Awesome

This is my favorite Veslor Mates book so far. I've felt the chemistry between Jessa and Maith since the beginning and I knew their story would be just as entertaining as their rivalry has been. I look forward to meeting Anabel in the next book.

planetary collapse

this adventure takes our mcs on a planetary revolt, a trapped underground strain and a medical drama.
it was OK.. I may have over indulged in this series, and become less satisfied.
The predictive age formula behaviours of the mated or nearly mates is getting old, and would it hurt the author to write more creative bedsport?
I kind of feel like it's the same scene repeated in every book a few times.

Jessa Brick, Alien Research Specialist, has some physical advantages over other humans.
As a child, she and her sister Anabel were orphaned and placed to be cared for by United Earth (UE). This meant that they would receive an education but would be in debt for good.

In the accident, Jessa received a bionic eye and a brain implant that helped her learn everything more easily and quickly.
Working on the Defcon Red ship, Jessa lived at war with the Veslor doctor, Maith. He refused to let her have access to his race's anatomical studies. However, as some Veslor warriors had chosen human women as their mate, and these were getting pregnant, Jessa managed to catalog some of the Veslor characteristics.

On a new mission on the planet Torid, Jessa discovers that the government was involved in corruption, leaving the people to starve and fall ill, not receive any treatment.
Jessa and Maith begin to investigate and discover that the problem is much bigger. To get more evidence against the corrupt, the two agree to a truce and work together, pretending to be mates.

As much as Maith finds Jessa irritating, he can't deny her intelligence, wit and courage to fight as an equal in the most dangerous situations. It's impossible not to feel the attraction for her, and when they start pretending to be a mate, kissing and hugging, Maith soon finds himself wanting to protect her as a woman of value, as all females on his planet are protected.

The mission continues with a lot of politics, and they discover that perhaps they can rescue Anabel and also free her from her eternal debt to the UE.

The series is good and has a lot of adventure and hot scenes, but the whole situation on the planet Torid was a bit boring, making the story interesting only after 52% of the reading.

🔥 “You kept touching me. You’re mine now.”
~~~
I absolutely loved Jessa! She’s so smart, compassionate and caring. And even more, I loved her strength, courage and feistiness, and even her prickly side was a delight. I loved that she was not afraid to speak her mind and to stand up against injustice. And, with her modifications, she’s such a badass! She’s absolutely amazing!
Maith is the Veslor’s group medic. He’s strong, honorable, brilliant and fearsome - the right male to deal with the fiery Alien Research Specialist. And he’s so cranky, bossy and so fiercely protective. I loved him!
I absolutely loved the development of their relationship. Oh, there’s a fine line between love and hate with those two and I’ve waited a long time for them to fall for each other. Jessa and Maith were absolutely amazing together and were such a great team. And I loved their bickering and banters so much. Their attraction was undeniable and when they finally gave into their feelings, the passion they shared was so, so hot!
Overall, The Torid Affair is a fantastic enemies-to-lovers story filled with fast-paced action, twists, political intrigues, danger, steamy romance and fantastic characters.
I loved it and cannot wait to see what happens next!
This read deserved 10+ stars OMG
I don't ever recall one of Laurann Dohner's reads being humorous. But half way through this read I laughed so hard my stomach hurt and years were running down my face.
Maithe and Jessa had a tumultuous relationship at best. So when they were sent on the same mission things really heated up. They were forced to work together to secure a corrupt planet. WELL after both being abducted thrown into the bunker and managing to rid of the bad guys, but keeping the main ones alive and rescuing two hostages, the inevitable happened. Yep they did the deed LMAO. But when one of the hostages comes running to where they were yelling, did you hear that, they told her to go back to her apartment where she would be safe. She kept saying did you hear that, sounded like two animals fighting, then wait for it , I think one is dead. OMG seriously I couldn't stop laughing. The conversation that continued just got better.
Seriously best line ever. You need to grab this read ASAP. Thank you Laurann I needed this story. Now off to read Hunter Raze and see if Jesse's sister is rescued and who will end up being her mate.
So Good. Love this series
I want my own Veslor. I really loved the direction Mrs Dohner took this book. Jessa and Maith have been so hostile towards each other; you knew it was going to take them literally getting stuck somewhere isolated with lots of danger to bring them together. The brutal honesty that comes out in Jessa when she decides she trusts Maith exclusively is very revealing and adds a whole new dimension to who she really is. More details about how important the Veslor planet and their allies are to the United Earth Gov is revealed and becomes very important to their grouping. Smith being the last Veslor in his grouping to mate leaves us with a hole to fill. Mrs Dohner used the new situation Jessa is in, to introduce a new Hunter class of Veslor group and their hunting Annabel, Jesse's sister. DanaLynn
Jessa Brick, médica especialista em alienígenas, membro da tripulação da Defcon Red e antagonista do médico da equipe tática dos Veslor, Maith.
Acabam tendo que ajudar a população do planeta Torid, que está em conflito com o governo, e isso significa trabalharem juntos, para descobrir a verdade.
Eu sempre desconfiei que esses dois iriam acabar juntos, na verdade era o romance mais esperado, confesso que também estava com medo da história não fazer jus ao casal, mas foi justamente o contrário, pelo menos para mim. Eu gostei muito, li numa velocidade louca e quando terminou li os 4 últimos capítulos novamente (risos!) Coisa de leitora maluca.
E agora fica a duvida, a autora vai lançar mais um livro nessa série, contando a busca a Annabel ou vai lançar uma nova série com esses tais caçadores, loucaaaa e roxa de curiosidade.
