Case Lee #8

The DC Job:

Rate this book
A kidnapped girl. A deadly conspiracy. A fate worse than death.
Spies, lies, and killers emerge from the shadows.
And Case Lee is unleashed into the heart of darkness.

Contracted to find a diplomat’s missing teenage daughter, his gut says there’s more to the story—a feeling supported when DC assassins paint a target on his back. With an eye over his shoulder, the quest starts among the ancient ruins of Petra. Frustration mounts as an enigmatic Bedouin clan reveals a whisper-thin trail about the girl’s disappearance. Back in DC, Case confronts the diplomat, who discloses a deadly conspiracy. Case packages the conspiracy as shadow games for others to play and focuses on the prime mission - find the girl. But can he leverage the conspiracy to help his search? And as the espionage world swirls around his efforts, whose side are they on?

Ruthless players continue targeting Case as a threat to their plans. In hot pursuit, they are determined to silence him—and the truth. Relentless, Case follows lead after lead as the clock ticks and odds of rescuing the girl fade. Help arrives from the most unexpected of places, and the trail leads to a nightmare some would consider a fate worse than death. Undaunted and alone, he enters the lethal setting. And introduces his enemies to the world according to Case Lee.

In this globe-trotting adventure—the eighth stand-alone novel from the Bestselling Case Lee Series—Author Vince Milam delivers another heart-pounding thriller from the power centers of Washington DC to the ancient ruins of a lost civilization; from the most lawless place in America to the pitiless slave markets of Africa and the lethal deserts of the Sahara.
You’ll love this edge of your seat thrill ride, because Case is a flawed hero we can all cheer for until the last page.

To tell a good tale.

It’s a simple and valid answer when the question pops up, “Why do you write?”

At the end of the day, it is to tell a good tale.

Vince Milam has lived all over the world, traipsing through the Amazon, Congo, and Papua New Guinea—all the while demonstrating bourbon has medicinal qualities. Raised in Texas, he lives in the mountainous West where he proves—annually—that God doesn’t want us driving on snow. He relishes great reads, fine trout streams, family, old friends, and—especially—writing fast-paced thrillers that keep you up at night.

Vince Milam does it best in this "can't put it down" episode of ex-delta operator, Case Lee. From DC's spooksville to Jordan's Petra, and from Slab city, CA to Mauritania's Sahara, the action never stops. The scenes in this story were the in characters' opinion, "very weird," but somehow Milam makes it work, even if a bit fantastical.

The question remains, can Lee ever stop his mad ops, which can only end in one way? That Case is idealistic is part of his charm, but I hope Milam allows Case to finally see the truth of his world. After 8 books, the super lucky guy needs to learn what Jules keeps telling him--the one big thing never ceases to exists, even if he wants it to or believes it doesn't affect him. Otherwise, he becomes just a character with no growth.

I want to believe Case is "a good man," yet after all the dead bodies he leaves in his wake even though they "deserved" it, I don't know if that is accurate. He is a dangerous man with "good" intentions. Because of Lee's huge potential, I want him to grow and survive and live a while away from the violence and conspiracies. I want his soul to soar, like Bo's.

Maybe the world is better because of "rough men keep us safe" exploits. Maybe I don't want to think about the issues Milam visits that intrudes in stark comparison into my mundane life. I shudder to think this glimpse into this world is the true reality-yet in light of recent past events in the world and in the US, I realize, sadly, it likely is.

I like Milam's treatment of his female characters. They are strong, brave and capable, and respected. Every installment has at least one, which gives Milam's readers a little relief from all the "manscapes." I wouldn't be able to read the series otherwise, so well done.

In the 8 books series (so far) Milam's readers have visited areas in the world you would only want to read about, and never, never visit, but also areas that maybe you would want to go see. It is rare for an author to be able to do that, in my opinion. I look forward to the next installment.

Another great story!!

This writer takes you all over the place with a former D-boy and his friends. Theres travel, family, adventure, gunfights, sarcasm, wit and humor and a smooth easy to follow storyline with lots of surprises. Enigmatic characters, spies, awesome secondary characters and the best little sister you've ever met. For the sensitive reader there is little to no profanity and the violence is not graphic. Most of the time the violence only happens to those who really need it, have been asking for it and truly deserve it. This whole series is a really great escape. I'd put Case and his buddies against any other writers characters, smart money would bet on these guys.

Case Really Has His Hands Full This Time

He’s been hired to find Jakob Kaminsky’s 14 year old daughter, Krystina, who was kidnapped while on a trip for diplomat’s children to visit historic sites in Jordan. Every lead he follows turns into a dead end and time is passing quickly, each day making it less likely she’ll still be alive. His old friends Marcus and Bo join forces with him to locate a person who might hold the key to where she is being kept.

This is the most exciting can’t put down Case Lee book ever! I read the entire book in one day because there was never a pause in the action that allowed me to stop. Even if you have never read a Case Lee novel before, you can’t miss reading this one.

The draw of this series to me are the well developed and varied characters that are interwoven into these stories. The characters ultimately make up an interesting but bit disfunctional extended family. This book has an interesting storyline that includes a basic kidnapping undertaken for much more than basic reasons and an overlap of the clandestine world. As usual, Case Lee undertakes a job that should be somewhat straightforward but is anything but that. It was nice for him to recognize that fact earlier in this book than he has at times in the previous books in this series. This novel loops in a cryptocurrency/blockchain angle along with modern slavery.

So good. Each book reinforces Case’s character and ability to deal with harsh realities. I hope he hangs it up tho before it does him in. He deserves to live the good life and love. I feel I have learned so much about the world reading these books. I have traveled considerably but never to such places. And have no wish to. I had never heard of Slab City and am sorry that such a depressing place exists in this country. Petra, a wonderful, interesting place. Mauritania, a place I’ve never given much thought. Vince writes in a way that you feel you are actually there…almost surprised to look up and realize you are in your own living room.

I guess one can describe Case Lee as a man of the world, the way he is just about traveling all over the world. I certainly envy his trip to Petra in Jordan.
But then, trying to find a missing fourteen year old girl is actually quite an unusual reason for doing so.
This time, though, it is all about a feel good mission. Find the girl and return her to her parents.
But it also proved to be a most unusual and lethal mission too, as Case soon discovers.
Most unusual.
And so I got bogged down once again for some frantic paging till I got happily to the last paragraph, all in one continuous sitting. Phew.
Enjoy.

Loved the narration from Tim H. Dixon, he brings out the pace, action and suspense.

Case is contracted to find a diplomat’s missing teenage daughter; his gut says there’s more to the story and he is not wrong. From the start he has a target on his back. He has unknow players in hot pursuit, they are determined to silence him—and the truth. Relentless, he follows leads as the clock ticks and odds of rescuing the girl fade. With the trail leading to a nightmare some would consider a fate worse than death. Case does not stop, not until justice is done.

This 8th book was great! It contained the usual suspects, except for Catch which disappointed me greatly. The in-depth computer jargon was interesting and the addition of Red gave the guys another ace in the hole. The action with the bad guys wasn't enough, in my opinion. The visit to Slab city was the only time they got together. I really hope you don't make Bo's girlfriend any more adamant about him not helping Case. Thanks for the continuation of all the folks in the book!

Non stop action with humour and compassion

As always, Vince delivered everything needed for a great action book. Our favourite characters Bo, Marcus and hero Case Lee navigated bad guys, intrigue, spooks and ofcourse saved the young heroine. Some worrying subjects touched on, freedom of information and sadly still practised today, modern slavery. When is your next book, Vince?

DC, hah!

It does start there, sorta ends there. If you know Milam you know the major portion is a "Travelog", of sorts. Case, joined by 3of his intrepid former Delta operators, introduces readers to a most unique Cali locale, Slab City!
After their visit to another Cali dream that burst, Case is off on his own to rescue the damsel! With typical aplumb, he saves her & others sold into slavery! A very enjoyable read, when's #9 come out?

Another Case Lee home run!

I gave this offering 5 stars because I like the Author's balance of details, character development and surprises.
For example, Case Lee always drinks Grey Goose Vodka. I mistakenly thought all vodka based from potatoes. After my own research from a curious point Vince made at the end of the book, turns out Grey Goose is made from wheat and spring water. Love it, keep up the good work, Vince!

Review of THE DC JOB by Vince Milam

Thank you ,Vince ,for yet another 'can't put it down to sleep or eat' book. I actually went through a bag of my pepperoni rolls while reading this book! Sitting out on my screened in porch swing, eating pepper.rolls, drinking zero free Pepsi, listening to the birds in the woods and my porch water fountain, and reading one of your books, man, it just doesn't get much better! DC Indeed

Expecting a book all about Washington, DC? Think again: more action happens in the “Dark Continent” of Africa than the capital of the US. It’s all “Devilish Chaos” — and it’s all a “Delightful Composition.” Superbly crafted and thoroughly enjoyable, with just the right mix of hard-core action and soft-hearted interaction. You’ll constantly be drying either perspiration from tension or tears from joy.

great book - don’t miss this one

Vince Milam has a great series with Case Lee as his star. He’s a badass with a heart and laser focus on doing the right thing while dodging bullets and doing the undoable. Love the supporting cast too. They are all great characters you’ll come to love. Can’t wait to tear into the next Case Lee adventure. Don’t miss these books. I highly recommend

Good action, and as always, I like the in-depth description of the weaponry and its very effective deployment. So too, I enjoy the very detailed manner in which the author lays out the sights, sounds, smells and of course visuals of the many different locations where his missions take him.
At times I found maybe a bit too much wordiness with little significant connection to the overall story line, when delving into the lives of his associates, Bo and Marcus.

Overall, another winner.

Another great Case

Very good story that develops well as always. The characters are so good and the recurring characters are so fun to keep up with. The descriptions of all the locations were fantastic and makes the reader not ready to visit Slab City.
It’s small and not a big deal, but the repetitive use of, “_______ or three” multiple times in every book is cringy and lame.
Overall, I can’t wait to follow Case on his next adventure to the Clubhouse and beyond.

Another Great One

I have read each of the books in the series and was never disappointed with any of them. Every one of them is a great read and is hard to put down, truly. I can’t wait for the next one. You won’t be disappointed with any of the books in the series. Read one and you won’t be able to not read all the rest. They are great!

This is the 5th Case Lee I’ve read and by far is the best. Good balance of action scenes, investigation, and interesting geographical descriptions. I admit, the writers style and dialogues are unique to this series. I’m not a gun nut but the variety and description of weapons choice enhances the action scenes tremendously.

I thought this one would be predictable

I thought this one would be predictable, but Milan surprised me again. His insights into the State Department and the CIA are entertaining, and ring true. However, years ago when I was traveling through West Africa, I had a young man in his thirties come up to me and identify himself as the newest CIA officer on station. True story!

The DC Job

Another great addition to the series. Good characters, nicely developed. Always a good story line. Plenty of action. The best thing about Case Lee is that he thinks and feels. While there is a good body count, that is not the main intention. I have read the entire series and enjoyed every book. Recommended.

When Your Heart is Pure

Pull, tug; pull, tug; go on your search. Come back for more information that is not to be found, but you are the only hope. And old truism is shared (follow the money). Meet up with friends. The trail is lighted. Off you go - again, and this time…well, you must read for yourself. It is what you expect and so much MORE. EVERYTHING IS GOOD!

Case Lee around the world

Anybody can write a story; well… almost everyone.
But the Case Lee stories have taken me to places all over the world, where I will never visit.
This book introduced me to Mauritania, the heat of the Sahara, Slab City right in California.
The plot is good, as always.
Look forward to the sequels.

Kidnapped and put on the auction block!

Find a kidnapped 14 year old diplomats daughter! A simple straight forward job, right? Not hardly! Too many “alphabet” organizations involved! And a foreign country which in this modern time still auctions captured countrymen (women and children also) to the highest bidder! Will Case Lee find the girl in time?

Marvelously woven, intense actio

This novel is perhaps the best of the series. It provides broad insights into a fantastic set of characters, especially Case Lee. Although few of us will ever experience similar situations, Vince Milan does a remarkable job making these rough characters relatable. The storyline is very well crafted and well paced. Great job, Vince!

The daughter of a Polish diplomat disappears while on a school trip to the Middle East. Case Lee is hired to find her. Getting no cooperation from the authorities, he manages to retrace her steps finding a vast conspiracy, as well as competing conspiracies, and a whole lot of danger. Good thing he has a few friends to help.

Exciting at times, with a good setting.

Case Lee, reluctant hero

It doesn’t matter what I am currently reading, when the next book in Vince Milam’s series comes out I stop immediately and settle in for the adventure. I have never been disappointed.
