There are some things you just don’t do, and falling for a man like Wyatt James is one of them. The man is obviously too old for me, far too experienced, and as unattainable as the stars in the sky. Yet, I can’t stop the fluttering of excitement low in my belly every time he looks my way, or this incessant need I have to be near him. Falling for Wyatt is easy. It’s everything that comes after that’s hard. Sometimes, the choice to stay with the man you love is out of your hands. Sometimes, the past mistakes of other people can leave an impact, even generations later. Sometimes, trying to be with the man you love can only end in heartbreak. Sometimes, I don’t care.
Wyatt -
There are very few things in my life I can’t control. Loving Emery is one of them. What started as a chance meeting turned into a defining moment I can never turn back from. There’s no denying that this tiny girl got to me in ways no one else has ever done before. Falling for her is easy. It’s trying to convince her to stay that’s hard. Sometimes, love isn’t enough. Sometimes, the past mistakes of other people can take away the one thing you cherish most. Sometimes, stories are written down to end in tragedy. Sometimes, I don’t care.

V.T. Do is the author of angsty contemporary romance books. She currently lives in Colorado. When she's not spending time working on her upcoming books, you can find her talking to herself, arguing with imaginary characters (hence the talking to herself part), daydreaming, hunting magical creatures, in search of her next caffeine fix, or reading obsessively over dirty-mouth, bad boys from steamy, smutty romance books.

So many emotions are felt throughout this story.so much drama and intrigue. I could not put this story down. It also steamed up the pages in some spots. It had all the goodness of a 5 star read.
This one was all about the feels and honestly that's what pulled me in right from the start of this book.
I was instantly connected to Wyatt and Emery and their roller-coaster of a love story.
Emery comes from a wealthy family and she's the apple of her grandfather's eyes. But that wasn't always the case. As we see in the very beginning how Joseph, Emery's grandpa, takes her away from a bad situation when she was a little kid. And I felt oh so much in that very moment and admired her grandpa.
Now, Emery is twenty and dealing with the loss of her grandpa when she comes to realize that her grandpa might be a saint in her eyes but for some other people it was the complete opposite. In fact, when she realizes that there might be dark secrets related to her grandpa's past that affects her today, she doesn't know if she even wants to know those secrets and rather cling to the only image of the man who loved her like no other.
I loved Emery and Joe's friendship oh so much. They are truly what you call 3 am friend & your ride or die. They both are top priorities for each other and I adored them so much.
When one such night, Joe trying to cheer Emery up, goes clubbing and there we meet the silent and brooding, Wyatt and there's an instant chemistry there.
Oohhh... That first meet when Emery is saved from a dangerous situation by the handsome stranger, I was so freaked out and also after that intrigued about this handsome stranger.
Wyatt and his friend Cole, both feel this spark for Emery and Joe. But where Cole is unabashed about wanting Joe, Wyatt instantly gives cold shoulder energy especially when he realizes Emery's last name.
Ooohhh.... I can't say how badly I wanted Emery and Wyatt together. Even though Wyatt is such an unpredictable one who's mood swings drove me crazy, yet later THAT MAN... OH MY.. HE WAS SO CRAZY FOR EMERY.
The weight of the past secrets hang like a dark cloud constantly over Emery and Wyatt. But where Wyatt seems to know what's happened, Emery has no idea.
I really was consumed by this book and by Emery and Wyatt. That man had me swooning so hard and fanning myself because of how he can't get enough of Emery.
The spice is so freaking hot and I mean like you will feel the crackling tension between them oh so much, waiting for the moment when they will light up together finally.
Wyatt was that perfect man who cares about Emery oh so much but them together....🥵🌶️🌶️🔥
But that secret that goes on to become a huge weight between them, raises the stakes for Emery and Wyatt as each day passes.
I just wanted to know what had happened. The suspense pulls you in and you're like how the heck is Wyatt related to Emery's grandpa's secrets.
We have lots of angsty times and emotional turmoil and drama so good along with suspense sprinkled in, that it'll have you turning the pages like crazy.
I loved loved Wyatt and Emery's chemistry oh so much. I just couldn't have enough of them together. The spice, the intensity and chemistry is so wild and hot and oh so addictive. Ahhh... Absolutely loved loved this one. ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Was this book about the friend instead of the FMC? It seemed like it since the heroine just talks about how beautiful, great and awesome and lucky her friend was. The heroine being 20 and rich but yet doesn't have a life was unrealistic.
The heroine was pathetic, weak, homebody, boring, and anti-wealth. No explanation as to why the heroine doesn't like going out or was she traumatized? Nothing great about the heroine. I don't care for insecure, weak, and BORING female. The friend was more interesting.
The h was a joke. Flirting with another girl when he was her semi-date. The heroine being attacked then almost drug did not flow with the story. Unrealistic and believable. The writing writing was okay but the execution was weak. Gave up at 25%. Passed on this one.
But the angst was worth it! You never truly know what secrets a person is hiding...no matter how well you may know them. This book is full of secrets and steam and tension.
This book had such wonderful balance. Wyatt was the perfect amount of brooding and stoic before turning into the ideal alpha hero—dedicated and protective. I was also impressed with his vulnerability and willingness to admit his mistakes. He was fully prepared to grovel, and I appreciated that. His chemistry with Emery was instant and passionate, and I was intrigued by the contrast between Emery’s innocent nature and the mystery surrounding her birth and circumstances.
I had somewhat anticipated the resolution to the conflict, but the exact details were still surprising. Even though there wasn’t a lot of action in the story, the emotional depth and uncertainty of Emery’s past kept things exciting. I admired Emery’s friend, Joey, and her dedication to protecting her friend. Joey’s subplot was sweet to watch, and the novel’s conclusion included a great epilogue and was just everything I could’ve hoped for.
Overall, this was a book filled with love, emotional drama, and hope. It receives my absolute highest recommendations, and I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.
*I received an ARC of this novel. This is my complete and honest review.*
This is a tragic story, but it shows how love and relationships can be ugly, beautiful, and messy. Once I picked up the book I just could not put it down. The characters were engrossing and the plot played out well. There is drama and some heat and everything that you would think would be in the title. I loved Emery and Wyatt and how they both were drawn together. This was well written and a great story that just kept me interested through out. Great book.

Ugly, Beautiful Mess by VT Do. What a beautifully tragic story- Love really can be ugly, messy, and beautiful. I was so drawn to it that once I started reading, I needed to keep turning page after page just to see how and why this works out. I found this story to be a nice paced dark drama with just enough steam, dark drama, and conflict to keep you interested until the end. This is my first read by V.T. Do; Ugly, Beautiful Mess is a standalone and book #1 in the Ugly, Beautiful Love series. It was previously published as "The Mess You Left Behind". The story is the same just the cover and title has changed. It's an angsty age gap romance, navigated from the main characters' perspectives: Emery and Wyatt's. I enjoyed reading this book and the characters are great! When they first met an instant attraction occurred between Emery and Wyatt. At times, you'll feel frustrated and annoyed with their behaviors, I certainly did. I mean, it got a bit tiring seeing them going back forth (it dragged on for a while). Unable to decide whether they wanted to be together or not; sabotaging their relationship before it even started. Emery craves for Wyatt's attention, but she can't trust him. Hence, she just knows that he is going break her heart. At first, Wyatt acted like an a**hole and his 'hot and cold' behavior gave Emery a mental whiplash. But as the plot started to unravel, he had his reasons why he acted that way. And eventually they gave in, they couldn't deny the chemistry between them any more. The last few chapters picked up! Especially when the secrets were brought to light.
I loved seeing all the characters' relationship dynamics with each other. Emery's bestfriend Joey is such a character! I laughed out loud at some of their group dialogues, and you can easily tell that Emery and Joey care about each other deeply; they are more like sisters than friends. They balance each other so well: Joey is more of a social butterfly, she's outspoken and confident. And Emery is socially awkward, she tends shy away from large gatherings. But Joey was persistent in bringing Emery out of her shell.
Emery comes from an affluent family, and she is aware that she's privileged. Despite everything being handed to her on a sliver platter, Emery is down to earth. She's smart and intelligent, hence Emery is striving as a college/uni student, valuing her education by studying hard to become successful in life. She prefers (and tries) to blend in and not flaunt her wealth. But she also have certain insecurities about herself. Besides her bestfriend, Emery isn't a fan of socializing or dating. She's questioning herself; something is missing in her life and she's doesn't know exactly what it is, until she met Wyatt.
Wyatt was in the 'right place at the right time' when their paths first crossed; he was literally her 'knight and shinning armour'. As soon as her eyes met Wyatt's, Emery was automatically drawn to him. But they didn't exactly got on the right foot. A relationship that was doomed to fail from the start; there was no future for them to be together. Yet this didn't stop them from wanting each other. A twist of fate, indirectly Wyatt and Emery are connected to each other; there's a shared history between them. Their relationship was formed on secrets, but the funny thing about secrets is that they have a habit of being revealed.
**I received a gifted eARC in exchange for my honest review
I really enjoyed this novel and the themes discussed within it. I liked the chemistry between Wyatt and Emery and how they found each other. I really enjoyed the side plots that the book had to over and I liked how the story came together. I could guess some of the plot twists but I was still quite surprised by some of them at the end of the story.
Very much enjoyed both Emery and Wyatt's story considering as their journey progresses they both didn't have the best upbringing which was coincidental.
Emery seemed like an old soul to me but then I guess with her backstory it would make you more attuned to what life was about and what she had to go through to get to where she was.
Her relationship with Joey was really special and so glad they had each other through their life as they both needed each other and so I can totally understand how they were codependent on one another, more Emery than Joey but to know that Joey was their for her when ever she needed was special.
Wyatt was an interesting character. Again i enjoyed his backstory and how he came to be. He seemed very well balanced and an even keel which I liked. I felt sorry for him and the place that he was put in with this story line but then it all added to a great story with the twist and turns and the angst.
Wyatt and Emery had amazing chemistry and obviously inevitably they would be together. I just loved these two together. How they made each other feel and their sexual chemistry was off the characters hot.
I enjoyed the ending. There was the twist and turns and I kind of thought I knew who the big surprise would be. And to finish a great story off is to have a lovely epilogue and that is what happened here. Simply beautiful.

The first word is complicated. The only easy thing about this book is that Emery and Wyatt love each other desperately. He is 11 years older and knows more about her family than she does. She is grieving for her grandfather but doesn't know that Wyatt hated the same man. It's complicated. And the book goes on like that the whole way to the end. The writing is a bit of a slog at times; things were repeated, some wrong words--but those things were probably just because I read an ARC. Overall, I liked the redemption at the end--how we can be one person at one time and a different person at another, or with another. I also like the "moral" of the story that secrets can hurt just as much as the truth.

This book had me on the edge from the beginning. I love that H fell so hard for her and didn't gave up on her. He pursuited her and made sure to break her walls. I liked the fact that he didn't break his promises to her grandfather and always made sure she was OK: a honorable gentleman. On the other hand second characters were good like their best friends but their families...it was hard to imagine living a life like that. I read it in one sitting through the night. Very good story.
An interesting story that had some really goo moments. I liked the characters though some of their actions weren’t realistic. I was troubled by some of her thoughts and a few of his actions. I thought the title didn’t really fit the story but that’s just my opinion. A bit of tweaking to ensure the details fit the characters and this would be a very good story.
Thank you to V.T. Do and Goodreads.com I won this book in a Giveaway.
This book was a lot of fun to read, the mystery part kept me interest and the other parts kept me blushing. I do agree with some of the other reviews that some passages were cumbersome and unnecessary as they were repetitive of information that we already knew. Overall good, easy to read fun book.
She thinks she shouldn't be with him due to his age. He thinks the same thing. He is way older but the way she feels around him is so good. They are so perfect for each other. It was so good. Loved how they are together.

The secret was lame... The whole book she tried to figure out this H heritage and till the end of the book we don't even figured out..like wtf? why? It was wayyy to repetitive!!!! it started really good but then it went flat. The h annoyed me most of the time. Overall? it was a nice book but to long for my liking.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Ugly, Beautiful Mess was an engaging and enjoyable read, filled with compelling characters and a story that kept me hooked from start to finish. The writing was immersive, and I loved the way it made me feel completely transported into its world!
This read was short and sweet. Seventh if I've percent of the book was about Emery and Wyatt getting to know one another. The secrets of the past weren't revealed until the end. It was a short love story between two people who were afraid of getting hurt by the lies of the past.
Emery and Wyatt have a chemestry like no other but their journey isn't smooth sailing. This age gap romance is filled with suspense, desires, twistsband more.

This was a very interesting and compelling story, about two people that shared misunderstandings about their relationship. Their background was complex and difficult to understand.
DNF at 20%. I feel like I wasn’t reading the same book as other reviewers…writing was poor and there was nothing compelling about either main character. So many better books out there-pass on this one.
It was kinda ok. Didn't like the FMC much, the chemistry between the leads was good, loved the relationship between the FMC & MMC's bestfriends more, cluster fuck of family relations.

Needs editing. Didn't understand Grandpa taking care if his grandchild but not his own daughter???? A wealthy man would have taken care of her, even in secret.
