Okefenokee Rifles

Rate this book
It's not a western. Instead it's a story of young man drafted into the Confederate Army and torn away from his home in the Okefenokee Swamp. He leaves his new wife and infant son to join the 26th Georgia Infantry, the Okefenokee Rifles, and for three years, he does the bidding of his commanding officers, never sure why he is fighting. It's the story of his war years and his return to build a life once more for his family. Another exciting novel from the pen of R. O. Lane.

If you want to be late for work this is a great tale to cause this. The story flows around the Okefenokee everglade swamps and the life and adventures of a young man, a skilled hunter, and the supporting community around him, later followed by the American civil War and his return home. The cut and dried way of writing by R.O. Lane takes the reader into the story and all the emotions of life, from laughter and sadness to the joys of marriage and parenthood and the stress and horrors of war tied in with the twist of friendship between former family feuders.

The most compelling and heartwarming story I have had the opportunity to read! Enjoyable!

Definitely another five star masterpiece by Mr.Lane as this old Southern boy finds himself between a rock and a hard place many times over! His civilian life is filled with ongoing excursions that some of us has been through! He finds himself married and then has to leave home during the Civil War! There he meets a soldier who he knew of and they became snipers!
Very heartwarming experiences throughout this compelling, and somewhat heartwarming, yet suspenseful episodes throughout the entire series of unending adventures!
Once again Mr. Lane's outstanding storylines successfully maintains anyone's undivided attention from beginning to end, and each new encounter grabs at your heartstrings! Too, the character selections could not have been any better portrayed, as they continuously fulfilled their dedicated assignments any better!
Definitely recommend this compassionately, and certainly heartwarming episodes to all readers, regardless of your reading pleasure! A mixture of love, hate and never ending excitement! Will certainly pacify anyone's desired expectations, as the two friends will grab your undivided attention immediately and never falters from beginning to end! Do yourselves a favor and enjoy this compassionately motivated masterpiece!!!😃

This was an interesting story of a young man struggling against the challenges of poverty and living in a minimal environment. Life was simple in that he loved Mamie who was the daughter of a nearby farmer. Life was simple...right was right and wrong was wrong. The descriptions of life in the swamp were realistic.. The threats from outside were real as he was threatened from a family intent on revenge. He married and he and Mamie began a simple life in the swamp. The War between the States found him leaving Mamie and their young child. Much of the story followed the battles of the Civil war as Leuil fought because his officers told him too. He became friends with a member of the family who wanted to exact revenge on him. He and his friend, Booth became snipers and fought together until the end was in sight. They made their found their way home and established a new life free of war and happy in ranching and raising children.
R O Lane takes us on a journey through the major and minor battles of the Civil War. It was an usual book for me as I rarely read about the Civil War battles.

I enjoyed this book as I have enjoyed all of your books! Just enough historical Civil War information without making it a Civil war history book! Many of my paternal ancestors fought for the north from Kentucky and were in some of the battles you mentioned in this book. I now live in the mountains of Union County, Georgia and have visited the Chickamauga battlefield which has the Fuller Gun Collection that includes many Spencer and Sharps rifles you mentioned in this book! As long as you keep writing I will keep buying and reading them.

Excellent story!!

The characters sound real as any and I liked the plot. Good writing and it shows much of the bad side of war. I recently read another version of the start of the Civil War and it gives me to think that it really was the war of Northern aggression. At the time, the North had 3000 slaves and the South only had 2000 slaves. Anyway, all this time, I've been wrong about the Civil War..

R.O. Lane has another great story to tell. Always so interesting! Looking forward to the next one!

Most excellent! I don't usually like reading about wars, but you did a great job to make it more interesting than most other authors. I wish our country didn't have to go through that war. I loved reading about the swamp. Simple living is always the best way to live. Thank you for another great story.

Okefenokee Rifles

I started reading R.O Lane books back at the beginning of 2023 and have read 30 so far to date. His books are stories about folks that are used to living the hard scrabble life and making it successful. Not financially necessarily but definitely they are stories about starting with virtually nothing and ultimately building families and bringing the American dream to reality.

A fast exciting trip through the eyes of unwillingly soldier.

This was an great review of the civil war from the perspective of a man who had no interest but was caught up in it.
The story was filled with information about living and exiting in a swamp.
I’d give it 10 stars if I could!

I love historical fiction. This story really delivers . Very educational as well as you learn about animals living in the swamp. How to survive and thrive . Very relevant with recent news if Brian Laundrie in Similar area. Then also great details of surviving as a Confederate during the war years. Great characters with good values. Loved the ending

This is a really good story!!!

I enjoyed this book! Was a great story . I recently started reading Western books and have found some are just variations of other stories I had read. This book is very different and interesting! I am glad I didn't let the title dissuade me from reading it. Looking forward to trying another book by this author.

Go Dawgs!

As a "Georgia Boy," living on the Oregon Coast, I thoroughly enjoyed this story of south Georgia folks and Florida Crackers! Great characters and fast moving action. As a lifelong student of the War Between the States, I appreciated the blending of history with the drama. To R.O. Lane, I thank you! Jonesy

Initially, the dialect of the characters from the swamps of South Georgia, was difficult to understand, and I was very tempted to put the book down. However, as time went on into the story, the dialect of the swamps mostly disappeared, and the dialog became more understandable. Turned into an interesting story.

Great book for new genre.

I really enjoyed the true description of the swamp. Also the accurate description and the "cracker" culture was true to form. Making cane syrup was a joyful time of my childhood, he did a great job with that. I encourage him to do more southern cracker genre it seem natural to him.

Page Turner: excellent read!

This is Well written, fast-paced and keeps the reader's interest up. I like his turn of phrase and how he kept the Action Moving. The Civil War parts were exceptionally well-written and puts the reader in the middle of the action. Suspenseful and keeps me wanting to turn the pages. Great read.

Best book I've read in quite awhile! Excellent all the way to the end!

There are multiple story twists and turns with excellent grammer so that I didn't have to figure out what was supposed to have been said. Really enjoyed the characters. Not full of any vulgarity and only the typical language of the time. Excellent read that won't insult your sensibilities.

A little different hook to a Civil War story

I found this book intriguing as, I have always been a history buff for the years between 1835 to 1890 in the States. I am not saying this was an accurate story as far as history goes R.O. has declared this as fiction. But to me just imagining one mans story was enough. Good job Mr. Lane.

A truly great tale

This is a story that tells you of life in the swamp lands before the Civil War then continues to expand on the life style of being a sniper in the confederate army. The plenty of hard hitting action and just the right amount of romance to complete the tale. Definitely enjoyable reading through the last page.

Fascinating

Truly a fascinating novel! Different from western novels by virtue of the geographical setting: Okefenokee Swamp. And some of the Civil War. The main characters of Hueil and Booth are fleshed out into two talented and strong men who fend well for themselves as they work together. A great story.

Wonderful story!

I really enjoyed this book. A change of pace from my normal western. Mr. Lane again really engaged his reader in a well developed story. I have always been a civil war buff . This book is as good of work about a young man and his family as any I have ever read. Highly recommend !

Lots of emotion

Could identify with so much of this because of my service time in Vietnam. The politics and upper echelon officers have exceedingly selfish agendas that exclude the common folks and this came out loud and clear. The heroes survive with the help of their close friends. Nothing bonds people as much as war does. Nice microcosm of war.

finally an author who is not politically correct

So good to read R O lanes books . He should be complemented on casting the Confederacy as being full of honorable men: todays authors are so politically correct and they have incorrect ideas about that time in our history so for that reason I gave him 5 stars: god bless y’all

This was different for R.O. Lane more of a civil war story than a western. But an enjoyable read. Hueil and Booth fighting for the losing side go through a lot. And are in major battles.

Very good read

Liked the commentary as I can imagine the war description is close. Never is good. The suffering and the losses are close and the dangers. Like the way it is written.
