Only in the darkness can you see the stars’ – Martin Luther King, Jr.
Author Lee Young has served in the business sector with her background in economics and investments. Now her love of travel with her husband and children has initiated her passion for writing children’s books. SLEEPY KINGDOM was the initial offering and now she adds TINY LIGHT. The beautiful illustrations that greatly enhance the story are the art of Daria Cina.
The story opens with pages of night skies that lead us to meet Noah, the primary character of the story – “Night has come, it was late, very late, but Noah’s still up because he’s afraid. Noah was scared of the dark. Mom tried to comfort him but even her hug could not calm him down. Noah refused to turn off the light, just as he did each and every night.’ Noah has experienced frightening things, causing his fear of the dark. His mother is supportive, tries to leave on a tiny lamp, but that fails to work. With loving ways his mother explains that ‘Everyone lights up the night in their own special way.’ After all, there are many sources of light – fireflies, mother’s smile, twinkling stars – ‘Only when it’s dark enough, can we see the magic of night.’ Gently, and with love, Noah’s fear of darkness abates and he sleeps with the stars until the little light of dawn awakens him.
A lyrical story, well told and well illustrated, that will satisfy the imagination of youngsters while offering parents some insights, too! Recommended
This was a sweet and wistful story full of beautiful imagery. Noah is afraid of the dark but with the help of a nightlight and a little imagination, Noah learns that it’s never truly dark everywhere. There are always lights on somewhere even if those lights are figurative.
