When Navy SEAL, Hudson “Phantom” McGhee, is forced to medically retire, he finds himself with nothing but time and a large family inheritance. The mountains beckon to him, and he followed them home to Colorado. Purchasing thousands of acres of land, he is determined to create an escape for injured warriors and a community for veterans, who, like him, are trying to figure out what is next.
What he wasn’t expecting was the feisty, red headed nurse, Samantha O’Riley. The youngest charge nurse in the Emergency Department’s history, Sam is a no-nonsense, take-charge type of woman who has no interest in military men, they are not her kind. She and Hudson clash from the very beginning.
When a violent drug cartel targets Samantha, she finds herself under the protection of Hudson. Soon, his protection is not the only thing she is under.
The veterans of Valhalla rush to protect Sam and their community. Will Samantha find herself falling for Hudson after all? Or will she walk away?

Dear authors, please write blurbs to reflect the subjects of the books. This book is heavily focused on BDSM, BDSM sex club, D/S. <<< Not mentioning this shit in the blurb wastes my time and causes the book to get poor reviews by readers expecting some spanking from a wounded vet, not a sex club.
What little I read is boring AF and reads like a Better Homes & Gardens article.
On point: Samantha and Hudson’s backgrounds and characters were compelling and complex. The world-building of Hudson’s Valhalla campus as a post-military retreat/compound for service members is a great setting for the next characters in the series. There was undeniable sexual chemistry between Samantha and Hudson. And both thoroughly enjoyed the sex acts.
Missing the mark: I’ve read a wide variety of romance genres and have read many novels in the BDSM genre. When an author takes the time to develop the characters and the story, and approach the intimacy with a respect for both parties, the eroticism can be compelling for the audience. While the character development was adequate, the BDSM and sexual scenes fell far short of the respect and consent I have found in well written BDSM romance novels. Samantha, the “no-nonsense” “take charge” supervising nurse at the local hospital is quite adamant that she is not a submissive. She says this many times. She has not been living the lifestyle, its new to her as a participant. Despite this, the former military male character, Hudson, is certain she is a submissive and pushes her at every opportunity. With hardly a discussion and with him telling her she gave consent- he spanks her thoroughly. And takes every available opportunity to do so using hands and a belt. When Samantha attempts to have an opinion or state how she feels, she is deemed to be disagreeing with Hudson and must be punished. On one occasion- before they even slept together and established intimacy- Hudson didn’t want her speaking any more and forced to her knees and stuffed his cock in her mouth. All in the name of “punishing” her for how she handled a hostage situation at a free clinic she founded and where she volunteers. Just very disturbing in the context in which it took place. Me: Girl, use your teeth!
When Samantha is upset and having a panic attack following the actions of a cartel soldier who is stalking her, Hudson spends a little time comforting her, and then decides that it is time to roll out anal sex. Yes, that happened. Cringeworthy.
I would have liked to have seen Samantha develop a relationship with Hudson where intimacy grew and it was clear that she understood and gave full consent to BDSM and the power dynamic of the relationship. Sexual intimacy and various acts which are consensual can be very erotic. It would been a much more enjoyable story if there was a build-up to the Dom-Sub relationship versus it feeling to the reader like it was imposed upon Samantha because Hudson felt he knew best and that she needed to “let go of control”. Especially disappointing was Samantha’s character- several times stating she didn’t feel comfortable with being a sub and articulating why that was the case. Then after Hudson imposed his will repeatedly (rules, spanking, aforementioned cock incident) - Samantha meekly acquiesces (yes, like a good sub).
Like some others in the genre, Samantha was not a violently kidnapped bratva princess being held at gunpoint by a rival . Rather, Samantha was described as a strong, organized responsible leader, determining her own life and decisions. Therefore the lack of her articulated understanding and consent being brought to bear in the relationship with Hudson was a disconnect and too jarring to be enjoyable. When these consensual elements are missing - the relationship can begin to closely resemble abuse.
Deep thoughts. Asking for a friend: Skip ahead 10-15 years, theoretically -wondering what does this BDSM relationship look like after 2 babies, job stress, fluctuating hormones, hair loss, lack of regular sleep and bodies that change in the 40’s and 50’s? It would make an interesting sequel read for any author/book in the genre.

Wow. This is one heck of a start to the series. (Though, I have discovered that there are two other titles with characters that impact Hudson and the creation of Valhalla: ‘Her Navy Seal Ex’ and ‘His For The Keeping’. Some readers may prefer to read those before digging in to this one.) I really appreciated that Sam is written as a strong independent woman, and I loved that this is one of the things Hudson admires most about her. I didn’t so much enjoy that her independence has her coming across as a willful stubborn brat a lot of the time. She also carries some strangely negative opinions of the Lifestyle for someone with her own membership to their local club. Hudson left me with equally disparate reactions. I adored seeing his passion for his work and he’s impressively in touch with his emotional side. Yet, several of his interactions with Sam felt somewhat heavy-handed. Especially when they were first getting to know one another. As they opened up about what makes each of them tick, I could better understand their behaviors. It didn’t mean I stopped wanting to smack some sense into either one, but I could finally wrap my brain around why they did what they were doing. I’m happy with where the author was able to get this pair in the end, and I’m now very intrigued to see what’s coming next for Valhalla. I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book through Booksprout.
The first book in this new series gave this avid reader everything she wanted to see in a book. The story has passion, mystery, suspense, angst, strong alpha men, and equally strong feisty females. I liked the characters, their interaction, a touch of danger, and how it brings not one but two couples together. The story does not end on a cliffhanger but a segue into the next story.
Hudson ‘Phantom’ McGee was the type of person who learned how to succeed and win since he was a toddler. He knew to push, push, push, and he would get there. When he finished school, he went into the Navy and worked his way to be a SEAL, not just a SEAL but the team leader of a SEAL team nine. A rescue mission had him shot in his leg, and the damage cost him that leg and the rest of his military career. He finds land in Colorado in financial trouble, makes the deal, and brings in other wounded warriors to begin Valhalla.
Samantha O’Riley is the youngest charge nurse over an ER. She is a woman who makes lists, is organized, and keeps a positive outlook, which she carries into her workplace. She is single and has lists and criteria for her ‘perfect man.’ She also found funding, donations, and others to help work a free clinic to help others—and many of the patients are veterans who can’t get help from the Veteran’s Administration.
The story’s plot will have Samantha and Mia driving out to Valhalla, where Paws Your Six is. Their neighbor’s grandson has had epilepsy since he was a toddler and has now developed diabetes. Mia, a pediatric nurse, hopes that maybe they can get him a service dog. That is where they will meet Hudson, and he takes an interest in Sam. The story will be plenty of push and pull for them to be together. She doesn’t want an Alpha military man, and he wants the feisty redhead. I like that he is persistent without being stalkerish—he happens to see her at the hospital, and she is exhausted, has not eaten, and he convinces her to take a meal break in the cafeteria with him.
Sam: I am busy, Hudson. It is flu season, and my nurses are calling out left and right. I don’t know about dinner. Hudson: Breakfast, lunch, a late-night snack, I don’t care. I will work around your schedule. Sam: I don’t know Hudson: You won’t know unless you try. What does it hurt to get to know each other better? Sam: Look, I don’t date hot-headed alpha males, Hudson. Hudson: Maybe you should. Maybe it’s exactly the type of man you need. Sam: I don’t need anyone.
Sam is the kind of person that helps others—it isn’t just being a nurse; it is who she is. She and Mia share a home, and she indulges Mia’s whims, knowing she is a little. She will go to The Citadel, a BDSM club, to be a safety net for Mia to have her outlet and munches, but she never participates. It will be at one of the new munches that she finds herself seeing Hudson again.
“Don’t get confused, Samantha. I will never want to change who you are. I happen to like your fighting side. What I want to change is your bad behavior. The changes I would encourage would be towards positive growth and strength.”
When she is dealing with an out-of-control veteran and helps with the situation, Hudson isn’t happy that she risked her life—she sees it as saving a life. But, within days, she finds herself facing an evil man who doesn’t care about others or life, and that is the situation that will have her realizing evil exists, and she is its target.
“You will find out soon enough that I am right more often than wrong.”
The story has the good, the bad, and the evil of people. I liked the Valhalla veterans, their teamwork, loyalty, and readiness. I liked the relationship and chemistry between Hudson and Sam—she understands the dynamics of BDSM and D/s relationships and discovers that it has its benefits. I never felt like Hudson takes things too far; he is a man of his word, makes his statement, and carries out discipline according to her choices. Sam has been hurt; she lets the past help her in her work ethic but hinders her in personal relationships—something Hudson pushes through. The story has discipline and sex scenes. I like that we also see the beginning of the Daddy/little relationship between Mia and Mitch, which will be in the next book.
“I already decided you’re my girl. All you have to do is accept it.”

I loved getting lost in the world of the Veterans of Valhalla. I had previously met Hudson in Her Navy Seal Ex as well as His For The Keeping. I was super excited to read his book since I thought he was just brilliant to create a safe space for wounded vets and their loved ones. He was an enticing morsel and we finally get to see his Dom come out to play. Sam was perfect for him, as an ER nurse, she has an insightful understating of veteran patients and has this very positive approach to her work. Their love story was everything- the passion and angst, the back and forth was exactly what I needed to read. And of course I loved the Valhalla veterans, they are alpha men devoted to each other as a family and to their feisty and independent subs. As a series starter, it is addicting and has me waiting for the next book with bated breath! I received an ARC of this book via Booksprout and this is my honest opinion.
I liked this story, especially the hero, who we've met in an earlier story. I did not like the heroine throughout the first 1/3 of the story. She was SOOOOOOOO defiant I wanted to just scream. IMO, it was a bit overboard. Phantom deserved a woman who appreciated him for him. Thankfully she improved, but it was initially annoying. There a good stories here and a nice ongoing arc that we'll be able to read about in the upcoming stories. I especially liked being able to see the other couples and their development.

There are some basic errors, spelling, mixed tense etc. I have no idea why there are so many high ratings, it is in no way a representation of a healthy D/s relationship. He decides she is his, that he is the submissive god and knows she is submissive even though she fights it at every turn. He rides roughshod over her wants and tells her to get in his truck or else and that he was going to take her to his home to deliver a spanking. She tells him no however what he says goes. No relationship, no intimacy, no emotional connection and certainly no negotiation. That's not D/s, that's abuse and bullying. Then there is the continued description of how wet her panties are whenever he speaks to her, the book can't make it's mind up on her personality and it's incredibly jarring to try to read. It's the usual trope, strong woman can only submit to a strong Dom, even though she comes across as a brat the reader has to remember her repeated assurance that she does not want to submit. Essentially the storyline was moving towards a forced submission ( I expect she gets her bum reddened and is then all about embracing the power exchange) but even if that's the case it's still forced and there is no exchange of power when she is not ready or resisting. And seriously? College kids from a fraternity in a dungeon? No self respecting Dom would trust that the sub was experienced enough to actually consent, no matter how much they paid to become a member. As for a college kid being a Dom, I seriously don't think so. The self control is obtained through experience and knowledge, letting a kid run around a dungeon with the obvious dangers is way too far fetched. There is no connection to any character, we get that he is a wounded hero with a lot of money at his disposal to create his own town, with a father who drove him to be the best at everything and a case of PTSD, but there is absolutely nothing about him remotely likeable. He is arrogant and judgmental and up to a quarter of the way through the book, there is nothing to redeem his character. He needs a serious personality transplant. The plotline is excruciatingly slow. There is apparently a drug problem, but up to the point where I gave up it's all off scene and doesn't impact the plotline whatsoever, apart from the DEA bringing him in to help them out. (Hello, he is five years out of a SEAL team with an amputated leg? We are expected to believe he handles kidnap and rescue situations and is on call to all sorts of official agencies) I have a problem with the syntax too, the book is written as if the author is trying to 'be' the character and it really comes through that this is happening, and that makes the character lack any depth of personality or emotion. I couldn't stick with the book, it bored me enough to call it quits and I hate purchasing a book and not finishing it. I can't recommend it at all.
I love the premise of this book. A veteran helping other vets and a romantic story. This author never fails to deliver. I received an arc of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I don't generally read books such as this one but I am so glad I did!! Phantom has been through a lot and Valhalla is his baby. A place for veterans to retreat to and sometimes end up calling home. They are a a very close community and many of them like brothers to each other. Phantom hasn't had a girl since he got out of military. He suffers from Ptsd and sometimes plays at the citadel, but never has sexual relations. Samantha is always in control of her days for the most part. Everything planned out. She even has a perfect husband list, none of which Phantom happens to meet. She is feisty and doesn't take anything from anyone. She lives with her roommate Mia. When they go to find a service puppy for a friend, they meet Phantom and Mitch Mia instantly flirts a bit with Mitch while Phantom talks with Sam. She doesn't want to like Phantom but everything he says and does has her body saying otherwise. She fights him at every turn and very soon she finds out he isn't willing to back down. When her life is put in danger will she trust him to keep her safe? I can't wait for the next book in this series ! I really hope we get to read more of Mitch and Mias story and I really want to see Bulls as well. I loved all the characters in this book.
Hudson “Phantom” McGhee only has one thing on his mind. Valhalla. His new home that he's built for him and his fellow brother veterans. He has no time for a woman and he's not sure he's complete enough for one.
Samantha O’Riley does not need a man. She can take care of herself thank you. She also looks out for her best friend, Mia. Mia is a Little submissive and needs a keeper. Sam walks on the fringes of submission but does not think she is submissive enough and she definitely does not want a dominant man.
I've been looking forward to this book ever since reading about Phantom in His for the Keeping (Shane and Frankie) and Her Navy Seal Ex (Max and Brianna). I knew that the Veterans of Valhalla series was going to be an awesome new series and RJ Gray did not disappoint!!
Phantom was such a dominant man and did not let Sam get a way with anything! She doesn't realize that she's submissive and fights him tooth and nail. There were so many funny moments as well as times I wanted to throw my Kindle with the stubbornness. This book brought all the feels with the sexy scenes but also the moments when Phantom's amputee status plays a part and made this story so real!
I cannot wait for the many stories that are going to come in this series! (I claim Bull...just sayin' 😉)
This is book 1 in the Veterans of Valhalla. It just explodes off the pages. He is a Navy Seal who was medically retired because of his disability. He is lost and founds a corporation to help veterans escape and come to find out what come next in there life. Samantha, who is a charge nurse, who finds no interest in helping military men. Phantom won't take no for an answer because of the attraction between them. Then when danger comes into her life she finds out just how Hudson expertise and protection from the group she receives. They are all about keeping and protecting their community save. Will this be enough to change Sam's mind about Hudson? Will they get their HEA? There is humor, mystery, action, suspense, their loyalty to each other,. Hudson is a strong alpha dominate male who's not afraid to dispense discipline, steam, and the growth between Hudson and Sam. Can't wait until the next story come out between Mitch and Mia. I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Phantom’s story will evoke all the feels! There is plenty of emotion in this story…suspense, love, humor, and even some anger. This book shows us that you don’t have to fit into a certain type to be a submissive. It proves every couple must find their own place in this lifestyle and that that is perfectly okay. Phantom has met his match! Samantha is feisty, head strong and completely in charge. Submission isn’t even in her vocabulary. Phantom is a former SEAL and used to having his orders followed without question. When Phantom asks her to submit he knows how big of a struggle that will be for her. Giving up control is not something she thinks she can attain. But he shows her with trust and love they can each be what the other needs. Reading is my passion and I loved this story so much! If I could give it 20 stars I would. I can’t find the words to explain just how good this book is! RJ Gray is a phenomenal author!

Hudson, aka Phantom, is a retired Navy SEAL, who found himself wanting to create a safe haven for other military veterans like himself who need to find their purpose going forward, a second chance, after separating from the military. He bought and is developing Valhalla Ranch in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. When he crosses paths with Samantha, he is intrigued. Soon he cannot get enough of the ER charge nurse, and while she second guesses him, he is sure of one thing. She is his. When a drug cartel comes after her, it will take Hudson and his whole team to keep her safe. Will Sam keep fighting their attraction? Or will she let herself give up some control and choose him? This is an incredible start to the Valhalla journey. The author knows Veterans first hand, and that knowledge comes through here. Hudson and Sam get a happy for now that I'm hoping will be an HEA as the series progresses. A feisty heroine and a strong Hero make for a wonderful story worth the one click.

I have so much to say but have no idea how I wanna word it.
Hudson has built a fantastic community in Valhalla. I love that not only do they support their own, but they also support those around them. I do commend him when it came to Samantha, he never gave up.
Samantha is a hard worker, loyal friend and just a little too ridged. She has a checklist for her ideal man that she sticks to like glue. But lucky for her, she's going to let go of some of that need for control.
I love how Hudson doesn't try to change Samantha's feisty side. He likes that she really keeps him on his toes, but she definitely needs to learn about her safety!
I can't wait to read more about the Valhalla residents.
I've been looking forward to Phantom's story since reading His for the Keeping. I love that he wanted Valhalla to help veterans. I liked that Sam was strong but Phantom turned out to be the perfect person for her. I loved this book and look forward to the next book in the series.

Phantom (Hudson) and Samantha definitely have the sparks flying between them. Phantom is a very dominant alpha male while Sam is a red head with a temper to match it. She is a woman used to doing her own thing and not answering to anyone else. When these two get together, it's turns into a power struggle until Phantom is able to break thru Sams defenses. I am loving this series and can't wait to read the rest of the series.

Wowsa this book was absolutely fantastic and will have you enthralled from the beginning until the end and the storyline flowed throughout the book. You can also connect with the characters emotions and feel like you are apart of the story. Hudson was discharged from the navy after being wounded and bought the land and started Valhalla a place to help other wounded vets and also their families. He is absolutely my hero in every way. Samantha O Riley is a charge nurse with a attitude, but has a heart of gold , who seems to find trouble and Hudson wants nothing more than to keep her safe from evil drug cartel but can he protect her from herself with her I can handle it attitude? This book was absolutely so good I couldn't put it down.

This was an fast and entertaining book. Hudson and Samantha made a good couple, their relationship involved power exchange but the book focused primarily on their new relationship, the danger Sam was in and working out how the power exchange aspect of their relationship would work rather than on their physical relationship. The writing and plot were both quite good. In a few places the dialogue seemed a bit stilted and it pulled me out of the story as I tried to figure out who would actually talk that way but it wasn't throughout the book so it wasn't a big deal. The book made me want to read about the other residents of Valhalla and find out how they get their HEA.

Hudson has left the military with a medical discharge. He has an inheritance from his grandfather and he buys land in Colorado and starts Valhalla, a place for wounded warriors. Sam is a ER charge nurse, the youngest ever at the hospital. Sam and Hudson meet when they go to Valhalla, thinking about getting a puppy for the grandson of a neighbor. Hudson, immediately wants to date Sam, but she doesn't because she wants to stay in control and she knows that is not going to happen with Hudson. He wears her down and that is the start of a great relationship.
I really enjoyed this story and I am looking forward to more from this great author!

The first book in the Veterans of Valhalla series a well written story with a very good storyline. This story grabbed my interest from the first page and did not let go until I was finished. Navy SEAL amputee Hudson “Phantom” McGhee starts Valhalla when he was forced to retire after he lost his leg. Samantha O’Riley is a charge nurse and her friend Mia is also a nurse who comes to look at the service dogs at Valhalla. The story has suspense, drama, danger, twists, turns, villains and romance. This story was well worth reading. I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Couldn't put this book down .. read through the night to finish it. GREAT story .. Ms. Gray did her homework and made this book come alive. Great characters, scenarios, believable storyline. Can't wait till Mace comes out the end of November. Loved this! ♡
Hudson, code named Phantom, has created a secure and safe sanctuary for veterans - especially those who were injured. He relates as he lost his leg prior to being discharged.
Sam, a nurse, has a very precise list for any future boyfriend/husband. Her ex influenced that list, and an alpha male definitely does not fit the bill. When she ends up at risk multiple times in a week, Phantom doesn’t take no for an answer. She needs a keeper.
The back stories, the secondary characters, and the journey of our main characters are all splendid and make for a terrific story. They also promise multiple future story possibilities.

Hudson aka Phantom creates a sanctuary for fellow veterans named Valhalla. Samantha is a nurse, happy with her current life, but conflicted about her feelings towards Hudson. She knows exactly what she wants from future boyfriend/husband and Hudson ain't it. Their relationship develops slowly through the book that is well written. The back stories and secondary characters are very well thought out, so I am looking forward to future stories and HEAs. I have received an ARC copy and am voluntarily leaving this honest review of the book.
I loved this story. I am so delighted that this book and series was written. It is very well written and described. I loved Hudson. He is so lost and protective. Sam lives to work and works to live. She needs more. Their chemistry is off the charts. They are very good for each other. There is plenty of different elements that make this a page turner, as well as some erotic sexy scenes and well-deserved spankings. I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book and I very highly recommend it. This book is very well worth reading.
A wonderful beginning to a new series. Alpha men and strong feisty females. No one is perfect and these vets have their share of issues. Sam is one of the more defiant females I've read in this type of story, but she is a charge nurse and used to being in charge. And so is Hudson. He's frustrated when she doesn't immediately do what she's told. But everyone is a product of their past and they eventually figure it out. I am looking forward to the rest of the series.
Wow is the intense. I love that Valhalla is a place where veterans can go to get all the help they need. I love how the men protect and care for their women.

I'm already in love with this series and this is only the first book! Hudson and Sam are both strong willed and caring. They get themselves into a few sticky situations and learn to lean on each other. I love how independent Sam is and how persistent Hudson is in trying to win her over. This book has everything you need. Romance, action, friendship and a good amount of sass. The side characters definitely leave you wanting more. I can tell that Valhalla is going to be a place a lot of people will wish was real. Great series starter!
