Zebadiah Clemens might have been chosen by The Lady, but he's still a marshal.
Chaos erupts in Silver Mesa when a group of outlaws decides to rob the town's only bank. The seemingly ordinary crime captures Zeb's full attention thanks to the lead bank robber abducting the young daughter of the stagecoach manager. But, unlike the sheriff, his authority — and willingness to get involved — doesn't stop at the edge of town.
In his pursuit across the New Mexico Territory, Zeb discovers a small rancher community with a rather unique problem: a dead man seems to be killing people.
He's not about to let the crazy supernatural stuff get in the way of his duty to uphold the law, but no situation is ever as simple as it appears... and all choices have consequences.

Book two was as good as the first. While each can be read in any order, I’m glad to have read book one first as book two does make some small references to inns in book one. The story had me not wanting to stop reading, having me eager to discover what will happen. I’m also glad each of these are complete stories with no cliff hangers. I’m hoping the will be a book three.
Read and enjoyed the first book in the series. This book is too badly edited to be readable. Confusion between the names of the sheriff and deputy on several pages. Then, although the main character left town on the robber's horse, he's suddenly riding his own!
Really enjoyed this book simply because of the supernatural content. With JR Rain you never know what's going to happen. And that is exactly why I keep on reading his books. Along with his other author friends, he is able to hook us into another series of great entertainment! Thanks JR.
This is a great story. A genuine western, it mixes the supernatural with a dash of horror. Zen is very different to Other main characters by Rain and Cox- I feel the story is stronger for that. An enjoyable read.
It was a basic western ghost/monster story. I was disappointed that the relationship with the being that was his horse was not repeated or expanded. I don't think I'll be likely to read vol.3 if it comes out. Too bad..
This is the second Zen Clemens book I have read and I must say I'm hooked. I could not stop reading. Zen Clemens is a Deputy Marshall with a bit of a difference he doesn't stay dead. He also battles monsters from other worlds. I can't wait to read the next book.
But that’s ok. I’ve been reading J R Rain’s stuff for a few years now, he suffers from diarrhea of the keyboard, you know, and he gets a partner for some things, which seems to work out. Don’t read this book until you read the first in the series.
This series must be read in order. This is the second book. I can't wait to read more!
Zeb is trying to get the hang of this dying and coming back to life bit... And it is not easy. He knows little of what The Lady expects from him or how to accomplish what she has set as his mission. Every time he dies he is afraid he will not come back. When some men rob the bank and taking a hostage he gives chase. Is being a lawman what he is meant to do? Or will it just get him killed more times? Does he have a future with Laura and Heath? Or will he come up against an evil he cannot defeat? Or will he be done in by a simple outlaw?
This next supernatural undead mess the marshal has to clean up is really grinding. Just don't want to sleep without a light on! Onto the next undead twist.
