Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.

Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.

The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, featuring the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes and his loyal companion, Dr. Watson. Published in 1927, it’s part of the final chapter of Holmes' adventures. Inside, you’ll find twelve mysterious cases that show off Holmes’ knack for solving complicated problems.

In this collection, Conan Doyle serves up a mix of cases that aren’t just gripping, but full of surprises. There are cases that have a supernatural twist, and others that are more grounded in regular crime. Holmes’ ability to crack any mystery, no matter how weird, is definitely the main draw.

Compared to earlier stories, Holmes comes off as a bit more grown-up here. He’s still sharp and mysterious, but there’s a calmness and a touch of emotion, especially in how he interacts with Watson. That said, Holmes is still more about logic than getting all touchy-feely.

The relationship between Watson and Holmes is always at the heart of the stories. In this collection, Watson gets more involved in the investigations and seems more independent. Even though Holmes keeps his distance, you can still feel the strong bond between them.

A few stories in The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes really stand out, like "The Adventure of the Creeping Man," which is packed with strange mystery, or "The Adventure of the Lion’s Mane," which reveals an odd death connected to a rare jellyfish. These stories aren’t just challenging, but also have some serious plot twists by the end.

The stories stick to the classic theme of how logic and reason always beat out superstition and chaos. Holmes is always quick to dismiss supernatural explanations, preferring to find a rational solution. The stories also dive into darker human themes like obsession, jealousy, and the more messed-up sides of people.

All in all, The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes is a great pick for anyone who loves a good mystery with a solid dose of logic. The stories stay fresh and interesting, and for die-hard Holmes fans, it’s a great way to see how the genius detective wraps up his final adventures.

Just a collection of short stories, just like the title says. Because of that, some chapters feel a bit rushed and don't go very deep into the cases, they're sometimes too short. But overall, the book still manages to draw you into the story (even if not too deep), so I'd give it a 4/5

Beberapa kali ketawa melihat interaksi Holmes-Watson. Ini adalah kumpulan cerpen. Seingatku ada dua cerpen yang dinarasikan sendiri oleh Sherlock dan itu terjadi karena ia sudah pensiun.
