In Betrayal at the Border, attorney Zachary Blake returns to tackle two cases that strike at the heart of our nation's contentious immigration debate.
In Riverview, Michigan, undocumented immigrants Miguel and Mary Carmen Gonzalez are determined to realize the American dream. They find jobs at a local filler plant, have children, and lead an all-American life, that is until ICE raids their plant . . .
Canan and Karim Izady are naturalized citizens of the United States. They have immigrated legally from Kurdistan and have an American born daughter, Hana. Unable to persuade her mother to follow the young family to America, Canan and Hana travel to an ISIS hotbed so the child may meet her grandmother for the first time. With the war over, what could possibly go wrong?
Two unique immigrant families, two uniquely dangerous consequences of America’s dysfunctional immigration system. Enter Zachary Blake, superstar lawyer.
But, for the first time in a long time, Blake is out of his element—immigration law calls for the expertise of his specialist/partner, Marshall Mann. Together, two extraordinary lawyers take on a terrorist network and a broken immigration system. And master investigator Micah Love returns, racing against the clock to prevent tragic circumstances. In our politically charged, anti-immigrant international climate, will a Hail Mary be their only move?
Award-winning legal thriller author, Mark M. Bello, pits our nation's broken immigration system against important human and social justice rights issues, spinning a tale that shines a bright light on the everyday fears of immigrants all over these United States. Can Blake, Mann, and Love prevent a Betrayal at the Border?

Betrayal at the Border by Mark M Bello Starts with kids playing after dinner, a Venezuelan game their mother taught them. We played similar games growing up. ICE is rounding up undocumented people and sending them back to where they came from. The kids have one secret and they will not tell anyone of their parents citizenship status. Story also follows another couple, caught up in the Syria/MiddleEast war where they were to leave for US to visit relatives and are now caught, not being able to leave the country at all... Sounds like exactly what's going on with our country these days. Mann and Blake lawyer agency know all the rules and will help those they can. Zach has the money and Marshall knows immigration laws. Family live near Detroit and the wife and daughter will travel back with help from a soldier while they are in Syria to visit relatives. Father stays behind... Like alternating chapters of each of the families and the obstacles they are up against. Like hearing of the choices they can make when it comes down to the hard stuff. US case is brought in front of a judge and you think things are going very well to bring the parents together with their children til you learn the kids were to be taken to a detention center but only adults are found there. No traces of where the kids are. Zach works with terrorists and SEALs to come to an end to the woman and her child being kidnapped. Love the generals, so cool! He's got the money and now the team to help not only negotiate but return the hostages. Author has such words that he describes the scenes so you feel as if you are there, can smell what they are smelling and see sights you wish you had never seen. Love the history along the way. Just when you think everyone is safe the court system handles the situations... Such torture to go through court system, like the outcome. Lawsuit is part of this drama. Note from the author at the end describes effects in Congress to get a bill passed to help the immigrant process more uniformly and standard throughout. Received this review copy from the publisher and this is my honest opinion.
And betrayal at the border Zachary Blake is in over his head and gets assistance from a specialty lawyer. Two families need his help one wants to become American citizens the other family is already naturalized citizens the both are in trouble with immigration. These two stories are very hot topics and hit close to home for many families living in America. Like all of Zachary Blakes books thayre written with heart and authenticity. I love these books and can’t wait for the next one it seems with Zachary Blake every book is better than the last. I thought with duel stories it would get confusing but it is in no way confusing in an every way absolutely compelling and a page turner a definite must read for those who love legal dramas and truly authentic fiction books. I can’t say enough about this book it was awesome!
Betrayal at the Border by Mark M. Bello hits another controversial issue in our country, immigration. I love how the author can separate from the more political stands and look at the individuals that are involved. His books outline his political views to some degree, but the focus is on humanity and the quality of life we take for granted. This novel is fictional, but it is the story many people living in the United States are facing. Bello uses his experience as an attorney and author to create a character, Zachary Black, who rallies for the oppressed.
Overall, Mark M. Bello is an author you don't forget. His strong and powerful voice as an author shines through Zachary Blake. Betrayal at the Border will touch any heart, no matter your position on immigration. I have read all seven books in his Zachary Blake series and love them all.
‘They dreamt of a better life, with higher education and, perhaps, affluence for their children’
Michigan author Mark M. Bello is an attorney and a justice advocate, having earned his BA in English Literature from Oakland University and his law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School. He spent forty years in the courtroom with high profile legal cases, and now offers his knowledge on his website Legal Examiner and Injury Board writing posts about safety, fairness and justice in the civil justice system. Mark consolidates his experiences in this series of novels – THE ZACHARY BLAKE LEGAL THRILLERS, of which BETRAYAL AT THE BORDER is Book 7.
The release of this book could not be more apropos as the media coverage of the immigration crises at our borders virtually shows us the activity, especially the Haitian portion – deportation to the mother country so ridden with strife and disaster. By now, those who follow the Zachary Blake legal thrillers know the primary characters and the unique mode of communicating a story line that make these books so memorable. He captures the human element of immigration as this book opens in Michigan with a discourse between Gonzalez siblings that introduces the ache behind immigration.
The synopsis is a fine guide for this fast paced story – ‘In Riverview, Michigan, undocumented immigrants Miguel and Mary Carmen Gonzalez are determined to realize the American dream. They find jobs at a local filler plant, have children, and lead an all-American life, that is until ICE raids their plant . . .Canan and Karim Izady are naturalized citizens of the United States. In our politically charged, anti-immigrant international climate, will a Hail Mary be their only move?’ And once again the story rings true, especially in view of contemporary news.
After reading the first six volumes, the central character Zachary Blake is now a substantial legal hero, and the manner in which master craftsman Bello manipulates his character’s movement and development is a witness to both the depth of his legal knowledge and his eloquent prose. The language is appropriate for each character, and the manner in which the multiple characters interweave is mesmerizing. This legal thriller series is of the first caliber! Highly recommended.
Mark M. Bello’s latest Zachary Blake legal thriller Betrayal at the Border is a remarkable story addressing the current hot topic of immigration. This book is more action packed than his previous books and gives us two separate story lines regarding the governing of our flawed immigration policies.
Miguel and Mary Gonzalez had immigrated years ago, but never became legal citizens. In fear of being separated from their United States born children, they chose to live undocumented. They live ordinary American lives working at a filler plant and raise their children to be honorable citizens. When that day they fear comes true, it’s tainted with dire consequences. Zach Blake does not specialize in immigration law, but his firm now includes an immigration attorney to address the whereabouts of the Gonzalez children when their parents are taken away. With Marshall Mann on the job, Zach is confident that they will get to the bottom of things and then plans go up against the United States government in defense of his firm’s clients.
Our favorite private detective Micah Love is brought into the fold on another case of a United States citizen who is kidnapped by an ISIS leader in Kurdistan. I don’t want to give away any of this part of story, but it has unique circumstances regarding immigration and introduces new characters that I hope to see in future Zachary Blake books.
I have read every single book in the Zachary Blake series and Bello out does himself every time. His stories are realistic, informative, and thought-provoking. As always, I can’t wait to see what he writes about next.
Betrayal at the Border (A Zachary Blake Legal Thriller Book 7) by Mark M. Bello
I received a copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
Venezuelan born Mary Carmen and her husband Miguel live peacefully in Lincoln Park, Michigan with their two children, Emma 9 and Emilio, aged 7. A humble couple, immigrating when Mary Carmen was expecting their first child; both now work at a local adhesive filler plant. Life is simple until the great worry hanging over their heads becomes a reality. Although they initially had a visa, it expired and owing to fears of refusion, they never reapplied, resulting in their status becoming classified as illegal immigrants. Their children, who were born in the US, are American citizens; therefore, they stayed, living with the fear of being deported to Venezuela.
Life trickled along until the number of raids deporting illegals increased. The dreaded day arrives when ICE agents storm the plant where the couple work and arrest them, as they cannot produce identity papers. Mary Carmen and Miguel, distraught, are in shock; their community rallies round, with the help of a sympathetic social worker who contacts and hires the great and finest trial lawyers in the country, Zach Blake and Marshall Mann.
Simultaneously, Canan, a Kurdish American citizen, elects to visit her hometown of Kobani with her young daughter. Her mother and grandmother still live there and have never physically met Hana, the child. Karim, Canan’s husband, is thoroughly against the suggestion, as he has to remain in America. Out of respect for his wife, accepting her resolution, he arranges safe transport for her. Unfortunately, en route, they are stopped at a blockade and kidnapped.
Mark M.Bello has constructed a novel comprising a terrifying game of chance as Zack and Marshall have to work simultaneously on two extreme cases with catastrophic elements. I was biting my nails, engrossed in the conclusion as the story cleverly switches between the two cases. The author has composed this book around a very likeable MC. For once, a lawyer with a caring attitude towards his clients. He genuinely feels concerned about the welfare of the people, not only about fees and money. I found this refreshing in someone of his position and career path, including his ‘ no expense spared ‘ attitude.
To conclude, Betrayal at the Border includes a defined plot with well-described scenes and activities and intricately thought out legal aspects giving a precise sense of reality.
Betrayal at the Border is a political fiction and legal thriller by Mark M. Bello. The story revolves around two families who have migrated to the United States: The Gonzales and Izady family. Both families came into the country to have a better life, but instead, their life turned upside down as they got trapped in America’s dysfunctional immigration system. Zachary Blake and his partner, Marshall Mann are extraordinary lawyers who are determined to fight for these families against a terrorist network and a broken immigration system.
Review
The things these immigrants go through are psychologically brutal! I cannot imagine how people cope with such a situation where they do not feel safe and protected in a country that they thought would give them a better life. Instead of fulfilling their dreams, they experience nightmares! Everything felt so real because I felt their struggles and it broke my heart to know that in reality, there can be people just like the Gonzales and Izady family. Though their circumstances have been stressful, it’s comforting to know that there can be people like Zachary and Marshall in real life who are rays of light.
Hence, I am giving this book 5 out of 5 stars and I highly recommend it to readers who are into political and court drama. This was a very realistic and informative book that tackled unique cases about immigrants and their rough journey. And I’ve had an enlightening experience.
Award-winning legal thriller author, Mark M. Can Blake, Mann, and Love prevent a Betrayal at the Border?
This is one of the best books that I have read recently. It is a great legal thriller that hooked me early on and kept me eagerly turning pages way past my usual bed-time. The story features some really great court room scenes, complex characters and I found it portrayed so many human emotions and frailties in a very delicate and compelling way that made me feel emotionally connected to the story and characters. This was an enjoyable legal thriller that really hits it stride in the courtroom scenes. Highly recommended!
Betrayal at the Border is a fast paced emotional read with 2 stories intertwining back and forth with each chapter. First with the Gonzalez family, Emma and Emilio are young children born into America while their parents Miguel and Mary have over stayed the limit and are illegal immigrants. When ICE agents come and take Miguel and Mary away the plot becomes sticky. Meanwhile Canan takes her daughter Hana back home to Syria believing that it will be safe for her family to meet her daughter...she was all too wrong. Marshall Mann the one who knows the immigration laws to the T and his partner Zachary Blake the no nonsense get stuff done lawyer take these cases and work around the clock to get justice.
Betrayal at the Border is the latest Zachary Blake novel and is very timely. It is focused on the issue of immigration and how 45’s administration (without naming him) targeted families of Latino and Muslim descent. It follows a Venezuelan couple who overstayed their Visas who have American citizen children, and an American citizen of Syrian descent and her harrowing kidnapping by terrorists in Syria. Blake takes on both of these families as clients and fights for citizenship rights in both cases. What a sad period in American history that anyone is treated without respect due to ignorance and racial bias. We need serious immigration reform, and this novel focuses a spotlight on the issue.
Betrayal at the Border, the 7th novel in the Zachery Blake Legal Thriller Series by Mark M. Bello tackles the broken immigration system in the United States. The story follows two different immigration stories being taken on by the clever and successful lawyer Zachery Blake. The exploration of the United States immigration system is both incredibly intriguing and completely heart-breaking. The two stories offer very different situations and characters but by seeing both sides by side we are given a deeper look into how broken the system is. Bello does a wonderful job of painting a full picture while also making a thrilling story that is hard to put down. I would highly recommend this highly compelling and powerful read to anyone who loves thriller novels.
Mark M Bello's Betrayal at The Border is book number seven of the Zachary Blake Legal Thriller series and a great addition it is.
In earlier books in this series, Bello created a strong and durable protagonist who I have grown to love and care for in following books, so I was only too eager to follow Blake as his new story unfolds and the character is continued.
Even though this tale belongs to a series, the plot is so well-constructed that I think it can easily be read as a standalone. It is definitely an entertaining read that should not be missed by thriller fans.
Betrayal At The Border is definitely another great read with great character building and a fast-paced and solid plot line. I really enjoyed reading this and I'm looking forward to the next Zachary Blake case!
I think one of the hardest jobs is being a lawyer. There are more cons than pros when you're too dedicated in that kind of job, especially if you're too compassionate and empathetic. The high-stress situations, the long hours, the possible danger in difficult situations, but the most disadvantageous of all, is having to deal with many unreasonable, unfair, and unlawful law system. Overall, I'm giving this book 5 stars for depicting exactly that. This book showed two cases to sample such a dysfunctional immigration system.
I highly recommend this book to all the people out there who've had the worst experiences with the dysfunctional immigration system. Although the story wasn't fast paced, it was still very intriguing with compelling characters because they truly represent people who can be any of us. This has been a very well depicted realistic story of two immigration cases that went wrong and was tackled by superhero lawyer, Zachary Blake and his team.
The best way to expose injustice is through a fiction novel. I'm sure the two cases were derived from real stories that the author has encountered during the time that he was an attorney. Either that or he might've known someone who handled these cases. I am saying this because of how realistic this story is, and I am looking forward to more stories in this Zachary Blake series. 5 out of 5 stars and highly recommended!
This was very heartwarming despite it being a thriller novel. I've read a lot of legal thrillers, and this one really stuck. It made me curious to know how much of it were based on facts and how much of it were fiction. I can kind of pinpoint some on both ends but of course, I might be wrong. Overall, I just appreciate authors who make me curious to the point of researching the immigration system of today. This book was on point. Loved it!
Saw that this is the 7th book in the Zachary Blake legal thriller series, so I am excited to read the rest of the books! I'm glad though that this can be read as a standalone. I'd say that the cases are quite familiar so they might be based on true happenings that the author made into fiction and added more drama into it. It's nice to use writing skills as a tool to spread information and enlighten readers of what's happening. Highly recommended to legal thriller enthusiasts.
What an amazing story about two different cases that show glitches in the immigration system! Mark Bello described it best when he said "dysfunctional." It pains me to think that such events might really be happening in real life. It they are, I hope there's a Zachary Blake out there who's also protecting victims and correcting injustices. A lot of readers can resonate with this book. Highly, highly recommended to all.
I feel like I've seen something like this in the news. There have been certain media coverage about the unlawful immigration system not just in the US but also in other countries. Which is why I am confident this will tug at the heartstrings of many readers, especially those who have experienced the same situation. 5/5 stars for how well depicted this was!
This is one of the best legal thrillers I've read! Very indicative of the author's experiences in practicing law. I didn't know at first that the author is also a lawyer but when I checked, I was right about my assumption. He is a retired attorney. Loved the plot & the flawed characters. Very convincing. Hence, I am recommending this to all readers who love legal thrillers.
Really impressed with the writing of this book. These story will take you on a ride of what and why's but leave you satisfied as well. It really hit close to home and will hit the emotions. Highly recommend read!
This is so true! While it is fiction, it is very realistic. For all we know, this can be based on actual cases that the author just stretched to make a drama out of it and indirectly send a message to the lawmakers of the sick system in the immigration.
This is most probably based on true stories that were fictionalized to hide real identities. I love how both cases affected me even though I did not go through the same bad circumstances. But that is the charm of this book. It easily evokes emotions you didn't know were even there. All thumbs up!
